That’s Julia Child. • She was born in 1912 in Pasadena, California. Her father John was a graduate of Princeton and a California real estate investor, and her mother, also named Julia, was a paper-company heiress. • In her youth, Child attended the elite Katherine Branson School for Girls in San Francisco. She was the tallest student in her class at 6 feet, 2 inches. • At school, Child was known as a high-spirited girl who loved playing pranks. She was also an accomplished athlete, especially skilled at golf and tennis. • Child attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Her intended career had little to do with cooking. Researchers at Oregon State University analyzed 11 different studies done with and without calcium, which often is given at the same time as vitamin D. All participants were age 65 or older. The study concluded that there is a correlation between low levels of vitamin D and early death in older adults. Specifically, researchers looked at vitamin D levels in “frail seniors,” a group defined by having three of the following five characteristics: exhaustion, slow walking, muscle weakness, low levels of physical activity and unintentional weight loss.

Lime Chicken with Honeydew-Peach Salsa This five-ingredient chicken dish showcases the bright flavors of fresh basil, juicy ripe peaches and honeydew melon. Serve with brown rice for a heart-healthy meal. 1 lime 2 cups (1/4-inch dice) honeydew melon 1 large, ripe peach, pitted and cut into 1/4-inch dice 1/2 cup (loosely packed) fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 4 medium skinless, boneless chicken-breast halves 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. 2. From lime, grate 1 1/2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 2 tablespoons juice. In medium bowl, stir together lime juice, diced melon, diced peach, chopped basil and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Makes 4 cups salsa. 3. Place chicken on plate. Sprinkle chicken on both sides with lime peel, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. 4. Place chicken on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook chicken 10 to 12 minutes or until juices run clear when thickest part of breast is pierced with tip of knife, turning over once. Arrange chicken on platter and serve with salsa. Serves 4. „ Each serving: About 285 calories, 4g total fat (1g saturated), 90mg cholesterol, 525mg sodium, 28g carbohydrate, 4g dietary fiber, 35g protein. “Pre-frail” seniors have two of the above five. The frailest seniors had the lowest amount of vitamin D in their blood. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found “strong evidence” that seniors need both vitamin D and regular exercise to prevent fractures from falls. So how do we get vitamin D? Ideally we get it from our diet (though there’s not much in our food) and sunshine. But many of us live in areas where it’s too cold to continue walking outside when winter comes. That’s where vitamin D supplements come in. Ask your doctor if you need a test to determine your vitamin D levels. Ask, too, whether you are in a high-risk group and perhaps need to have your balance, gait and vision assessed. Getting more vitamin D could be as simple as adding certain types of fish to your diet and taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Don’t try this on your own because your personal dose will vary. Ask your doctor first.

It didn’t last long, as Child was promptly fired for “gross insubordination.” • When World War II broke out, Child volunteered for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in Washington, D.C. She performed assignments all over the world, including stays in China and Sri Lanka. • While in Sri Lanka in 1945, Child began seeing her future husband, Paul, a fellow employee of the OSS. Child and Paul married after the war in September of 1946. • Paul and Child moved to France in 1948, when Paul was assigned to work at the American Embassy in Paris. It was there that Child’s love for cooking came into full bloom. She was quoted as saying, “The whole experience was an opening up of the soul and spirit for me . . . I was hooked, and for life, as it turned out.” • In Paris, Child enrolled in the world-renowned “Le Cordon Bleu” cooking school. After six months of training, she chose to open her own school with two fellow classmates. • They named the school “L’Ecole de Trois Gourmandes,” which translates to “The School of the Three Gourmands.” • Child and the other two founders of the school set out to create a cookbook of French cuisine that might be understood and employed by regular folk. • The two-volume cookbook was released in 1961, entitled “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” The book was incredibly successful, remaining the bestselling cookbook for over five years. • The book has since become a favored teaching tool at cooking schools throughout the world. Yet there was a time when it looked like it might never be published at all. • The writing of the book was a grueling and frustrating 10-year process for Child and her collaborators. She would spend months trying to perfect recipes for just a single ingredient. She wrote to her principal collaborator, Simca Beck, during her frustration: “I’ve just poached two more eggs and thrown them down the toilet.” • The initial draft of the book was turned down by the first publisher, as were many subsequent drafts. Only after offering it to a different publisher, Alfred Knopf, was it picked up for publication. • Child’s first television appearance was on a humble Boston public television station in 1962. She cooked

an omelet on air. After a surprisingly positive and vocal response, she was invited to do a series. Her initial pay was about $50 a show. • Child’s show, “The French Chef,” grew quickly beyond those humble beginnings. Soon after its initial airings, the show was syndicated to 96 stations. The show was both a commercial and a critical hit. In 1964, Child was presented with the George Foster Peabody Award for her work on the show. Two years later, she was given an Emmy Award as well. • “ The French Chef” was produced and directed by Russ Morash. It ran for 199 episodes between 1963 and 1966. • “ The French Chef” was just one of many shows Child appeared on during her long career. Other programs included “Julia Child and Company,” “Julia Child and More Company” and “Dinner at Julia’s.” She was also a regular guest on “Good Morning, America.” • Child wrote many other cookbooks after her initial success. Among these were “In Julia’s Kitchen with Master Chefs,” “Baking with Julia,” “Julia’s Delicious Little Dinners” and “Julia’s Casual Dinners.” Many of these were accompanied by their own TV specials. • Julia Child died on August 13, 2004. She was just two days shy of her 92nd birthday. She was remembered by her family and friends as a person of great generosity who loved to teach others. Though she once mourned her “lack of talent,” Child left an indelible legacy in the kitchens of people around the world. • In addition to inspiring both the book and film, “Julie and Julia,” Child’s life inspired an exhibit entitled “Julia Child’s Kitchen” to be installed at the National Museum of American History. • The installation is 20 feet by 14 feet. These were the dimensions of Child’s kitchen in Massachusetts. Though the walls and floor were created for the exhibit, everything else found there is from Child’s own former kitchen. The arrangement of everything found inside was assembled exactly to replicate Child’s original workspace. • There are over 1,200 individual pieces from Child in the exhibit, including equipment housed in the cabinets and drawers. These objects are not visible to the general public, but hundreds of others still are.

Or, let your kids pick little bunches of herbs from your garden, such as parsley, oregano, dill and thyme. Tuck them in mini vases or small jars lined up in the middle of the table. Name them as the kids arrange them. Corn on the Grill Have more than a kernel of fun when you grill ears of freshly picked corn for a slightly smoky taste. We like to soak ours in a tub of water for a half-hour, husk and all, before we put them on the barbecue. Protect your hands with potholders when you peel away the charred husks before serving the corn.

What are the best tools to have to take care of plumbing emergencies? -- Tamara in Tuscon, Ariz. A: The most indispensible tool in the apartment plumbing toolbox is, in my experience, the plunger. This inexpensive piece of equipment can stop toilets from overflowing and unblock sinks and shower drains without doing damage to the pipes. When choosing a plunger, go for a basic “force cup” model (this is the classic plunger with a simple bell), which works best on sinks and drains. If you want something a little more powerful for toilet clogs, pick up a second plunger with a center cone, which can increase the vacuum when plunging toilets. These don’t fit sink drains very well, though. It’s also good to keep a few more tools around for other plumbing-related work. While many apartment management companies will provide more than emergency repair -- they’ll also install the shower head you want, or help with minor repairs like dripping faucets -- some landlords don’t provide more than emergency service. So add these to your plumbing toolkit: --An adjustable wrench and/or channel-locking pliers, which can fit varying widths of pipe. --Flat-head and Phillips-head screwdrivers. --An “offset” screwdriver to help you reach screws at weird angles. --Spare washers, o-rings and screws. --Electrician’s or duct tape, and plastic or rubber sheeting that can be cut to size and wrapped around a leaky pipe for a temporary repair while waiting for the handyman. --Teflon pipe tape, used to seal pipe threads. If you’re interested or have permission to make more heavy-duty adjustments or repairs, adding a couple of sizes of pipe wrenches to the toolkit is helpful, as is purchasing a valve-seating tool, which cleans valve seats of sink faucets (a handy tool when fixing a leaky faucet). HOME TIP: Group your plumbing repair tools in a separate box from standard home repair tools so that you’ll be able to grab everything you need without sorting through all your tools.

Veterans in very rural areas have had little opportunity to arrange for burial in a national or state veterans cemetery. The Department of Veterans Affairs operates 131 national cemeteries, but they’re in areas of high population. Current requirements say that there must be 80,000 veterans living within 75 miles for a cemetery to come under the auspices of the National Cemetery System. Now, because of the Rural Initiative, eight areas will have local cemeteries established as National Veterans Burial Grounds. The new requirements are that there are no more than 25,000 veterans within 75 miles and that they have no reasonable access to a national or state veterans cemetery. The eight new locations are Fargo, N.D.; Rhinelander, Wis.; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Laurel, Mont.; Idaho Falls, Idaho; Cedar City, Utah; Calais, Maine; and Elko, Nev. This opens up burial options for 136,000 veterans and their eligible dependents. The new designations means that a portion, three to five acres, of existing local cemeteries will come under the care of the National Cemetery System and be brought up to the national shrine standards of the larger cemeteries. Besides making it easier on families to have a local cemetery, there are additional benefits to burial in a National Cemetery, no matter its size: The headstone, marker and burial plot are free. Eligibility requirements for burial in a National Veterans Cemetery are lengthy and complicated, but at the top of the list are: Discharge under conditions other than dishonorable, or a service member who dies while on active duty. The specifics can be found at the VA’s National Cemetery site [www.cem.va.gov]. To ascertain eligibility for burial in a National Cemetery, call the scheduling office at 1-800-535-1117. They’re serious business in several ways. Plenty of people -- agents, Olympic committees and, in some cases, even the players -- make money during the games either directly (the U.S.A. basketball team), indirectly (medal-winner endorsements) or through pot brownie bake sales for the American judo team. The games also lead to various infrastructure improvements and leave lasting legacy sites, such as the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. It is that place in particular that will leave a lasting impression in mind, for I was in the Centennial Olympic Park the night the park was bombed. The games for me, ironically, started with me being in the right place at the right time. I had recently moved to Atlanta and secured a job at the tech company tasked with providing the technology at the Olympics. A colleague scored a gig at the games, and I rode in on his coattails, hosting the “Surf Shack” inside the Olympic Village. Next to the Surf Shack were a laser-tag tent and the Village arcade. Every day I’d sneak out of the shack and do battle with the world’s greatest athletes inside both venues. The usual warlike countries excelled in laser-tag battles, but at the air-hockey ta-

ble? That was reserved for a country all to its own: New Jersey. For it was there that I reigned supreme, to the supreme annoyance of the world’s best athletes. My relentless, bank shot-laden assault backed with boardwalk-honed smack talk proved to be unbeatable ... that was, until I played the Australian swim team. My seashore smack was tolerated by, say, the Ukrainians or Moldavians, who hadn’t a clue what I was saying, but the Aussies, they spoke the language. Also, they were huge and they were there to win real Olympic gold medals. So, rather than crush me like a bug, they complained, and the Atlanta Committee of the Olympic Games decided to ban all non-athletes from the arcade. After arguing with American swimmer Jenny Thompson about Surf Shack rules (she didn’t like that we didn’t adhere to Stanford’s rules of emailers first), I took my lanyard to the Centennial Park that evening and met with an old girlfriend at the beer tent. We watched a country-fried band playing on the main stage, but decided we didn’t want to stay for “Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.” The night lasted until the early morning in an era just on the cusp of rampant cellphone usage, so I didn’t know that the park was bombed and that we had been sitting squarely within range of the blast. Suddenly, air hockey didn’t seem so important anymore, and as the athletes and citizens at the games came together in ways hard to describe if you weren’t there, I realized the games weren’t a joke at all.

3 cups fat-free cottage cheese 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free lime gelatin 1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, packed in fruit juice, drained 3/4 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1 teaspoon coconut extract 3 tablespoons chopped pecans 2 tablespoons flaked coconut 1. In a large bowl, combine cottage cheese and dry gelatin. Stir in pineapple, whipped topping and coconut extract. Add pecans. Mix gently to combine. 2. Transfer mixture to attractive serving bowl. Evenly sprinkle coconut over top. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Gently stir again just before serving. Golf is a sport that is played by millions the world over, and has been around for several centuries. However, it is said that few truly understand the sport and know what makes the game run like it does.

If you are in the market for clubs, you need to remember that while many people will offer their opinions, many of them have about as much a grasp on the sport as you do. EARWIGS Yes, those bugs with back pincers have a strange name. FYI, they don’t crawl in ears and eat brains! In fact, they are a generally beneficial insect. Managing their population and keeping them out of our homes is the main objective. They breed outside in warm, moist soil or plant debris (mulch); diet includes insects (aphids, mites, fleas and eggs), plants, mosses and algaes. They are most active at night and hide during the day. This wet weather is driving more of them indoors. Inspect your home, sealing cracks and crevices. Clean out debris filled gutters. Point sprinkler heads away from structures or better yet, turn them off as we have had more than enough rain water this summer. Clear mulch away from outside foundation walls. You want a nice, dry barrier to protect the home. Apply products as follows: Dust weep holes, cracks or crevices around outside of home Treat a 4-6’ perimeter using handheld or hose end sprayers
