In honor of the 73rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally being held August 5 through 11, Tidbits checks out the facts on Harley-Davidson, founded in 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. • In 1901, 21-year-old William Harley wrapped up a blueprint drawing of a single-cylinder engine designed to be attached to a regular bicycle frame. Two years later, with the help of his childhood friend Arthur Davidson, their first motorcycle rolled out of their first “factory,” a 10’ x 15’ wooden shed. Arthur’s brothers joined the company shortly afterward, boosting 1903’s production to three motorcycles. Eight cycles were sold in 1905, and 50 the following year. While the first Harley was black, customers in 1905 could choose black or the “Silent Grey Fellow,” Each had hand-painted stripes and a hand-lettered “Harley-Davidson Motor Company” on the fuel tank. • Harley-Davidson expanded to a new factory measuring 28’ x 80’ in 1906, and six full-time employees were on staff. The next year, production increased to 150. Another new factory came along in 1913, boasting 297,110 sq. ft, compared to the 2,240 sq. ft. of the 1906 facility. The larger area enabled the company to produce 12,904 cycles that year. • Seventeen years after the first cycle rolled out of that wooden shed, Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle company in the world, with dealerships in 67 countries. Inheritance Q: Due to a recent death, I have inherited a house filled with antiques and collectibles. Although I need to liquidate the estate, I have no idea of values. What do you suggest? -- Cynthia, Soulard, Mo. A: I went through this same situation when my mother died several years ago. She had lived in the same house for a number of decades and had filled it with almost everything imaginable. My sister and I were overwhelmed. We began by contacting and hiring a good certified appraiser so we had a better idea of what to keep, what to sell and what to discard. That is, perhaps, what you should do first. Don’t rely on a neighbor or someone who claims they know about antiques and collectibles, but a certified appraiser. Several weeks ago, a reader contacted me with four older rugs. She had been offered $1,500 for the four rugs but suspected they might be worth more. She hired an appraiser, who discovered the rugs were Navajo and from the 1920s. To cut to the chase, her rugs were valued at $35,000, not the $1,500 she had been offered. Although an appraisal is not free, it can be an extremely valuable investment in the long run. 1. Which group released “Going Underground,” and what’s the song about? 2. ¥ On Aug. 11, 1856, a hurricane hits Isle Derniere, a resort community on the Louisiana coast, killing more than 400 people. The storm first brought blinding and torrential rain, then storm surges and finally a tidal wave. Upward of 150 people were carried off with the wave, with some bodies ending up 6 miles away. ¥ On Aug. 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, the first execution in history by electrocution is carried out against William Kemmler. It didn’t go as planned. With the first charge, the current failed. A second charge was required for two minutes before Kemmler was declared deceased. ¥ On Aug. 7, 1944, under the threat of Allied bombing during World War II, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen halts production of the “Beetle.” Volkswagen, under the control of the British military, began turning out Beetles again in December 1945. ¥ On Aug. 5, 1957, rock ‘n’ roll television show “American Bandstand” goes national with teens dancing and rating records on a scale from 35 to 98. The show was broadcast from Philadelphia to 67 ABC affiliates across the country. Dick Clark was host, a slot he held for 27 years. ¥ On Aug. 9, 1969, members of Charles Manson’s cult kill five people in movie director Roman Polanski’s Beverly Hills, Calif., home, including Polanski’s pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate. Polanski was not the cult leader’s intended target. Manson, an aspiring musician, chose the Polanski house because he had once unsuccessfully tried to get a recording deal from a producer who used to live there. ¥ On Aug. 10, 1978, three teenage girls die after their 1973 Ford Pinto is rammed from behind by a van and bursts into flames. It was known as far back as 1972 that the Pinto’s gas tank, which sat behind the rear axle, was particularly vulnerable to damage by rear-end collisions. ¥ On Aug. 8, 1986, actor, writer and director Spike Lee’s first feature-length movie, “She’s Gotta Have It,” opens in theaters around the United States. The movie launched Lee’s career and established his reputation as an outspoken filmmaker who often tackled controversial subjects.

Sales to police forces helped them survive the economy’s collapse. • H-D profited greatly from the use of their motorcycles during war time. Over 20,000 Harleys were used during World War I, and nearly 90,000 were put into service during World War II. • In 1946, foreign motorcycles hit the American market and the competition with British and Japanese bikes was fierce. British imports had a sportier appearance and were cheaper and more reliable. Favorable tax laws governing imports made these bikes even more attractive. Although Harley-Davidson introduced the Hydra-Glide with the Panhead engine in an attempt to compete, it was heavy and not as sporty. It didn’t take long for H-D’s market share to shrink to a mere 6% of the market. By 1950, 40% of the motorcycles in the U.S. were foreign-made. • Marlon Brando was 30 years old when he rode a British Triumph in the 1954 movie The Wild One, the story of a motorcycle gang terrorizing a small town. The film’s popularity did nothing to help the sales of Harleys. In an effort to combat the appeal of British bikes, in 1957, H-D introduced the Sportster, considered “father of the superbikes.” • The 1969 cult film Easy Rider featured Peter Fonda as Captain America riding a completely transformed H-D Electra-Glide with a Panhead engine. Four bikes were customized for the making of the film. Three were stolen before the movie was completed, and one burned. Fonda later restored the burned bike and today that chopper can be seen at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. The Harleys ridden by the main characters in the film were purchased from the Los Angeles Police Department, as Harley-Davidson refused to provide free bikes for the movie. • The 1960s ushered in the customizing trend, but H-D failed to jump on the bandwagon in time. Their earnings faded, and the company was forced to go public, selling shares for the first time in 1965. In 1969, the family relinquished control of the business they had owned for 66 years, selling out to the American Machine and Foundry Company for $21 million. AMF, famous in the bowling industry, allowed the quality to slip considerably. Sales plummeted and by 1980, there seemed little chance of recovery for the company. In 1981, 13 senior H-D executives banded together and purchased the company from AMF for $80 million and the recovery began. In 1986, two million shares of common stock were offered, returning the company to public ownership. • There have been a number of “glides” throughout Harley history. The Hydra-Glide was introduced in 1949, with the first hydraulic front forks. This evolved into the Duo-Glide in 1958 with the addition of rear brakes and hydraulic rear suspension. The Electra-Glide came along with its electric starter motor in 1965, and on to the Super-Glide in 1971 and the Wide-Glide in 1980. • Harley has also had a variety of “heads” over the years. First there was the Flathead, dubbed as such because of the shape of the cylinder head cover. Introduced in 1929, it was a 45-cubic-inch side-valve engine. The Knucklehead, the first V-Twin model, debuted in 1936 with its cylinder covers shaped like clenched fists. It featured two fuel tanks with the instrument panel positioned between them. It was produced until 1947. Along came the Panhead in 1948 with aluminum cylinder covers resembling upside-down saucepans. Panheads were around until 1965. The next year brought the Shovelhead, whose cylinder covers looked like the back of a shovel. Compare the Shovelhead’s engine size of 74 cubic inches with that 1903 model’s 25 cubic inches! The year 1984 brought in the Blockhead, an 80-cubic-inch engine. • The 1932 Harley-Davidson could be purchased for around $300. If you’re looking to buy a 2013 Electra-Glide CVO Ultra-Classic 100th Anniversary Edition, better set aside about $38,000. A new Sportster will set you back around $11,000. • For seven days every August, Main Street in Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,700, is packed with thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who gather to race and tour. The first rally was held in 1938, drawing nine racers and 200 spectators. The two-day rally offered $500 in prize money. Two years later, 150 racers participated in front of 5,000 onlookers. Close to 450,000 are expected for this year’s rally. • Harley-Davidson expects to ship about 260,000 motorcycles to dealerships during 2013.
Boarding Cats DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re headed off on vacation, and I would like my cat to be cared for during the two weeks we’re gone. I don’t know a reliable pet sitter whom I can trust to come into my house. Is there such a thing as kennels for cats? -- June in New Orleans DEAR JUNE: There are boarding facilities that will take cats as well as other pets. I prefer to use facilities that are exclusively for cats, but not everyone has that option available in their area. Still, call around to several facilities. Even if none cater just to cats, look for one that has a living and play area completely segregated from other types of pets. One of my favorite places offered each cat a private “cubby” with scratching post and shelf. There were no bars or

fence grates. Instead, each cubby had a clear plastic door so caretakers could see each cat, and a one-way-glass wall with a view of a park. During the day, they were taken to a common area to socialize with other cats, and the facility was attached to a veterinarian’s office. Contrast that with a boarding facility I found in another region when trying to board my cat. It was mainly for dogs, with a small room full of metal cages for “other” pets, including cats, rabbits and so on. The pets all looked stressed out, especially as the constant barking from the dogs’ play area reverberated into their living area. That’s why it’s important to personally visit each facility you’re considering, so you get a feel of the place. It’ll help make the experience better for your cat. If you can’t find one that works, please reconsider the pet sitter.

ANSWER: The diet for type 1 and type 2 diabetes is not as restrictive as it once was. You can eat all the foods you mentioned. Sugar also can be eaten, something that was strictly prohibited in the past. You have to use it in moderation, and it’s best to save sugar calories for other carbohydrates by using artificial sweeteners. Weight reduction, if applicable to you, is the best way for you to control blood sugar. A 5 percent to 10 percent weight loss is a sure way to keep blood sugar where it should be. For high blood pressure, limit salt. You ought not to eat more than 1,500 mg a day of sodium. Read the sodium content of foods on their nutrition labels. For cholesterol control, cut back on fatty meats and whole-fat dairy products. You can use low-fat dairy. Carbohydrates are an issue with diabetes. Carbohydrates are sugars and starches. They should constitute 50 percent to 55 percent of your total daily calories. Fruits (yes, you can eat them), vegetables, cereals, breads, crackers, pastas and similar foods are carbohydrates. You have to get a book that lists the calorie content of foods and their protein, fat and carbohydrate makeup. These guides are in all bookstores, and they’re cheap. Breakfast shouldn’t be a problem. You can drink orange juice if you like it, have cereal, have toast and drink coffee or whatever. You need a coach in the form of a dietitian. The dietitian can help you navigate through the difficulties of understanding a diabetic diet. Your doctor or the local hospital can put you in touch with one. You also need to contact the American Diabetes Association, whose website is www.diabetes.org. Or call 1-800-342-2383. Adjusting a Pilot Light Q: I have an older gas furnace in my home upstairs that works very well, but I haven’t had it maintained it in a few years. I think the pilot light looks weak, but there’s no setting for a higher flame. How can I improve the pilot light flame? -- Nancy in Buffalo, N.Y. A: There is a way to control the height of the pilot light flame. Next to the “Pilot” indicator on the furnace’s control switch, there is a small screw located near the pilot light-thermocouple assembly. I’ll typically shine a small flashlight and use a magnifying glass to read the imprinted type on the control housing to make sure that’s the right screw. With the pilot light burning, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to carefully turn the screw one way and then the other, watching the pilot light to see if it gets stronger or weaker. The flame should be angling toward a nearby object that looks like a small vertical pipe: This is called the thermocouple, an important safety device. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple detects it and shuts the valve supplying gas to the pilot. The pilot flame should touch the thermocouple at a specific level. If the flame is blue and weak, and barely reaches the thermocouple, it needs to be stronger. If it extends well above the thermocouple, it’s too strong. If the flame covers the top of the thermocouple and burns steadily with a yellow tip, that’s just about right. What if the pilot light won’t stay lighted? If the assembly looks OK, turn off the gas supply at the nearest valve and try heating the thermocouple using a match for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then relight the pilot. If that doesn’t work, replace the thermocouple by carefully unscrewing it from the control housing using an open-ended wrench, being careful not to ding or bend the supply pipe or the pilot-light assembly. Install a new thermocouple by screwing it in, heating it up a bit, and then lighting the pilot. Keep in mind that this task can be a little frustrating, because you’re almost always working in a cramped, hard-to-access spot. Be patient and take frequent breaks if necessary, rather than compromise safety or damage the unit. HOME TIP: Make sure you know exactly where the main shutoffs for your home’s gas, water and electrical supply are located, and that you know how to turn them off in an emergency. ¥ “My father taught me all I know about working the grill -- even though it was his job! The tip that’s served me best is this simple beauty: Let the meat sear before you move it. Give it a chance to cook on one side well enough that it lifts away from the grill. If it’s sticking, you probably need to leave it alone! Happy grilling.” -- JoAnn ¥ “Kitchen stores sell grill brushes, but they can be expensive. I use a good-quality paintbrush from the hardware store for grilling only, and replace it a couple of times throughout grilling season. I find it to be a better brush, and less expensive to boot!” -- B.F. in Illinois ¥ Grilled meats will be moister and taste better if you let them rest for a few minutes after you take them off the grill. It allows the meat to redistribute the natural juices. If you are worried about temperature, just cover the meat with foil. ¥ “It’s best to clean a grill just after cooking, but if you weren’t able to, that’s OK. When faced with a messy grill surface, just preheat, then clean. The heat will burn off drippings and make it easier to scrub.” -- R.T. in Florida ¥ You should never use a cooking spray on your grill. Instead, soak a paper towel in oil and use your tongs to oil the grill surface.
