& Party Rentals

by Kathy Wolfe In honor of Valentine’s Day, Tidbits reviews some facts on famous sweethearts who existed only in the minds of their creators. • It was while working as a waitress at a resort that Wilma Slaghoople and her best friend Betty first met their future husbands Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, who were employed there as bellhops. The Flintstones was broadcast on ABC television from 1960 to 1966, with cartoon characters based on the 1950s TV series The Honeymooners. Fred worked as a crane operator at Slate Rock & Gravel Company, while Wilma stayed home to raise daughter Pebbles and keep house, using the modern conveniences of a wooly mammoth vacuum cleaner, pelican washing machine, and a pig garbage disposal. • A romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy seemed doomed from the start. Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice narrated the story of the very wealthy but snobbish and rude proprietor of Pemberley Estate, and the witty and intelligent Miss Bennet. Good marriages to wealthy men were vital to the five Bennet sisters, as their property and home was destined to be inherited by a male cousin upon the death of their father. Sparks flew from the beginning, when Mr. Darcy insulted Elizabeth’s appearance. When he finally realized his attraction Turn to page 3 for more!

Pepper and Egg Sandwiches

Add an instant taste of summer to savory winter dishes with a peck of bright peppers. When you can’t -- or don’t have time to -- grill them yourself, grab a 12-ounce jar off the pantry shelf, drain well and chop, and try them in this quick recipe. 1 large sweet onion, chopped 8 large eggs Red peppers 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 4 ounces (1 cup) provolone cheese, shredded 4 (6-inch) hero rolls 1. Spray 12-inch nonstick skillet with nonstick spray; then heat on medium 1 minute. Add onion and cook, covered, 10 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring occasionally. 2. Meanwhile, in bowl, whisk together eggs, salt and pepper. Add red peppers to onion in skillet. Pour eggs over vegetables; cover and cook 8 minutes or until almost set, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with provolone cheese; cover and cook 2 minutes or until cheese melts. 3. Spoon egg mixture into hero rolls, split.

Lizzie’s negative response reminded him of his arrogance and conceit, assuring him he was “the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.” However, as with all good romances, love triumphed as Mr. Darcy realized his pride, she recognized her prejudice, and Miss Bennet accepted the second marriage proposal. • Barbara Millicent Roberts met Ken Sean Carson in 1961. Barbara, aka “Barbie”, had been on store shelves since 1959, but her hunky boyfriend wasn’t introduced until two years later, when the two “met” on the imaginary set of a TV commercial. Each of them has had a wide variety of occupations over the years, Barbie having been a teacher, dentist, veterinarian, Air Force jet pilot, firefighter, astronaut, and ballerina, among many others. Ken has worked as a pizza delivery boy, rock star, pro tennis player, and doctor, just a few of his 40+ careers. After 43 years as a couple, Mattel announced they had split in 2004, but in 2006, after Ken received an extensive makeover, they were reunited. • The 1961 musical film West Side Story chronicled the story of Tony and Maria, a tale loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, New York City style. The story revolved around the rivalry between two street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Tony, co-founder of the Jets, fell in love with Maria, the sister of the Sharks founder, a combination that could only result in disaster. Richard Beymer took the role of Tony after it was declined by Elvis Presley, and Natalie Wood was chosen over the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Jill St. John. The film, which ended with the deaths of both Maria’s brother and Tony, took home 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and was the second highest-grossing film of the year. It ranks #51 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 best movies. • Although the love story about Lois Lane and Clark Kent, aka Superman, has been told in many different ways in various forms of media, they were first introduced in June of 1938 in the DC Comics publication Action Comics #1. Their romance started out as a rivalry, after Clark scooped Lois on a story at the Daily Planet, an exclusive on Superman. Clark was enamored with Lois, but ironically, her affections were fixed on his alter-ego Superman. The couple didn’t tie the knot until 1996 when the event was published in the comic book to coincide with the nuptials on the TV series Lois and Clark. In 2007, they welcomed the addition of an adopted Kryptonian boy then named Chris Kent. • Peter Parker made his first appearance in August of 1962 in the Marvel Comics’ publication Amazing Fantasy. He was an orphaned high school student in Queens, New York, living with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. When he was bitten by a radioactive spider, he attained the “agility and proportionate strength of an arachnid,” and acquired the ability to cling to walls and ceilings. In other words, he became Spiderman! Aunt May continually tried to fix him up with “that nice Watson girl next door,” a beautiful green-eyed redhead whose face was first seen in 1966. Mary Jane, or MJ for short, first met Peter when she was 13 years old, and staying with her elderly Aunt Anna. Peter was 14. They married in a Spiderman comics issue in 1987. On the big screen, the pair was popularly portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst for three films. The fourth film, released in 2012, didn’t include MJ, but rather Peter’s first girlfriend, Gwen Stacy. • Author Edgar Rice Burroughs conceived the idea of the British Lord and Lady Greystoke being marooned on the coast of Africa in 1912. Lady Greystoke gave birth there, but died on her son’s first birthday, while the Lord was killed by the leader of the Mangani ape tribe. Their son, John, Clayton, Earl of Greystoke, was adopted by the ape tribe, and grew up to be their leader. Thus went the story of Tarzan over the course of 24 novels. Tarzan met Jane Porter when she and her expedition were marooned in a similar manner. The pair married in Burroughs’ second book, published in 1913. The immensely popular series led to radio programs, comic books, and 89 movies, beginning with silent films in 1918. The most popular actor to play the ape-man was an Olympic hero, Johnny Weissmuller, winner of five gold medals in swimming, who starred in 12 Tarzan films from 1932 to 1948. • Homer and Marge Simpson were first introduced to TV viewers in December, 1989, along with their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The blue-haired Marge Bouvier met Homer Simpson during her final year at Springfield High School. Although the couple might be a little rough around the edges, they seem to have a way of working through their marital difficulties with unending dedication to each other. Actress Julie Kavner provides not only the voice of Marge in the animated series, but Marge’s mother Jacqueline and sisters Patty and Selma as well. Dan Castellaneta voices Homer, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Barney Gumble, Mayor Quimby, and Hans Moleman.

Give “Heart” Coupons On Valentine’s Day

Who isn’t coupon crazy these days? If you want to save $1 off your next box of breakfast cereal, there’s a coupon for that. If you want a two-for-one bonus meal at a local pizzeria, there’s a coupon for that. But what about deals for more family time, like snowboarding with Uncle Pete, or baking a cherry pie with grandma Kate for President’s Day? There are coupons for that too, when you make “Fun with a Heart” coupon collections. Give them this Valentine’s Day and discover how a simple idea can spread love and lovely times together for days and weeks to come. Adults can make a packet of “Fun with a Heart” coupons for their kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Add a snappy, eye-catching Valentine-themed cover to the packet, staple it together and it’s ready to give. Or, simply tuck a coupon or two in a Valentine card. They can be redeemed for a day at the zoo, an afternoon at a baseball game and a breakfast, making Grandpa’s famous flapjacks. Kids like to make them, too. They might want to come up with five ideas for things they can do for the person receiving the Valentine, like running an errand, babysitting a sibling, singing a song and giving a neck rub. They also might give the gift of time, such as, “This coupon is worth 10 minutes of shooting hoops with Natalie when Dad comes home” or “This coupon is worth one bike ride around the park with Caleb and Mom when the snow melts.” Write each idea on a separate piece of paper that is cut in the same shape as the cover. Add drawings or decorations, and for fun print “No expiration” date on the bottom. Staple the coupons together at the top between two pieces of construction paper or craft foam cut in a Valentine-themed shape. Or, simply tuck heart-shaped coupons in an empty Valentine candy box and tie with a ribbon. Extra fun idea: If you have a sewing machine, make “Tear off ” coupons. Remove the thread and then run the machine 3/4 inch or so from the top edge. The needle will make a row of holes for perforation marks. Staple together the coupons above the holes. The recipient can rip out a coupon along the perforation marks to redeem it.

Housetraining 101 DEAR PAW’S CORNER: How do you housetrain a dog? Does it take a long time? -- Soon-To-Be Dog Mom in Illinois DEAR EXPECTING: Housetraining a dog -- basically, getting a dog to eliminate outside rather than whatever spot is convenient in the house -- can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. The length of time depends on several factors, including a dog’s age, intelligence and your commitment to its training time. Consistency is the key, so place that word at the top of your to-do list before bringing home your new dog. It will make life easier for you and your dog in so many areas down the road. Housetraining itself is pretty basic. Twice a day, morning and evening (more often for puppies), take your dog outside, on a leash, to a spot well away from the house (or the neighbor’s house). If you’re in a city environment, scout out trees and sidewalk areas. Let your dog explore the spot while you gently encourage it to go. There are a number of command words you can use to signal that it’s to eliminate. I use the truly original statement, “Go poop.” Your dog will not understand you immediately, nor will it go on command. But most dogs will pee during the walk and may defecate. (Please pick up the poop using a scooper bag.) Accidents will occur during housetraining, particularly with puppies. Do not scold or rub the dog’s nose in it. Try and catch it as soon as possible after it eliminates in the house, say “No,” and immediately put it on the leash and head outside to the selected “go spot.” Then bring the dog back in, clean up and try again at the next scheduled time. Again, I’ve had dogs figure out the routine in a single day. Others have taken longer. Be patient and consistent, and stick to the schedule even after your dog has mastered the art of the go.

Last year five men were arrested for selling, conspiring to sell and/or distributing drugs at the VA Medical Center in Bedford, Mass. There were numerous agencies involved at the local and federal levels, plus the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General. The investigation took seven months. Let’s look at the players. I’ll call them by initials only. --J sold buprenorphine to an undercover federal agent, and conspired with R to sell oxycodone to an undercover federal agent. --R conspired with J to sell oxycodone to an undercover federal agent --D distributed controlled substances, including heroin, oxycodone, buprenorphine and clonazepam and conspired to distribute those substances. --It was the same for H and P. Just for clarification, buprenorphine is used to treat opioid addiction and clonazepam is for seizure and panic disorders. Oxycodone is for serious long-term pain. We’re not talking aspirin here. All of these drugs can be abused and cause addiction. Just how bad is this? J, R and D could have gotten up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. H could have gotten 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. P could have gotten five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. So, what punishments did they ultimately get? J was sentenced to 15 months in prison. R was sentenced to five years of probation. D was sentenced to three years of probation. H was sentenced to three years of probation. P was sentenced to two years of probation. No, it doesn’t matter that these men were veterans. What matters is that they were selling at a VA hospital with a drug rehab program, where other veterans go to get well. In some cases, they were selling the very drugs they’d been provided by the VA. Where in the sentences they received is there any incentive not to do it again?

Herpes Outbreaks Lessen Over Time

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please, give me all the information possible about herpes. I am a carrier. -- D.N. ANSWER: I take it you’re interested in genital herpes -- herpes simplex virus-2, HSV-2. The first encounter with the virus leads to an outbreak of tiny, painful blisters on red patches on the genital skin. Fever, headache, muscle pain and pain on urination often are also experienced with a first outbreak. Recurrent attacks are not as severe. Fever, headache and muscle pain do not accompany subsequent outbreaks, but the skin signs are painful. The first year of infection is a year of more-frequent outbreaks. After that, they come less often. If a person is subject to many outbreaks, that person can suppress them by taking Zovirax, Famvir or Valtrex at the first inklings that an outbreak is about to take place. For recurrence after recurrence, a person can go on daily doses of these medicines to keep outbreaks in check. Once infected, a person stays infected for life. That person is a carrier. Transmission is a huge problem. Even when a person has no signs of an outbreak, he or she can pass the virus to a partner. Therefore, all sex-

ual partners should be told about the infection. Condoms, while not 100 percent protective, afford a major degree of safety. When a visible outbreak takes place, the infected person ought not to engage in sexual contact. You are not alone. The herpes-2 virus infects up to 20 percent of the adult population of North America. Bad as it is, it is not the end of life or the end of a sex life. The booklet on herpes infection provides a more detailed discussion of this common malady. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you explain to me why a doctor would refuse to give a patient a shot of vitamin B-12? My former doctor, now deceased, gave me a monthly B-12 shot, and it kept me peppy. My new doctor says I don’t need the shots. Would they hurt me? -- B.A. ANSWER: The shots won’t hurt you. However, you need them only if you have a proven B-12 deficiency. At one time it was a widespread but not endorsed practice to give people shots of vitamin B-12 to energize them. It’s a practice that never should have been started. ***

On which album did “Throwing It All Away” appear? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “The blues they send to meet me, won’t defeat me.”

Answers 1. The First Class, in 1974. It was sung by Tony Burrows, well known for providing lead for groups that don’t flourish. 2. The Sound of Philadelphia, which was the theme song for the television music show “Soul Train.” The song was sung by MFSB, which stood for Mother Father Sister Brother. MFSB was actually a group of studio musicians. 3. “Venus.” The song has been widely used, including in the films “The Brady Bunch” and “Remember the Titans.” 4. “Invisible Touch,” in 1986 by Genesis. 5. “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” sung by B.J. Thomas in 1969. The song was written for the film “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Thomas had been recovering from laryngitis, which gave his voice the needed hoarseness in the film version.

¥ It was noted American poet Ogden Nash, best known as a composer of droll verse, who made the following sage observation: “Some tortures are physical / And some are mental, / But the one that is both / Is dental.” ¥ According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you consume 132 pounds of sugar every year. Compare that to folks in the year 1700, who consumed only about 4 pounds of sugar per year. ¥ If you cook a single ostrich egg, you can feed 24 people. ¥ When you studied history in school, you probably didn’t learn about Edward Hyde. He was a cousin to Queen Anne and was appointed to the post of colonial governor of New York, in which position he served from 1702 to 1708. Though he’s not well known now, he was quite the talk of the colonies in his day. It seems that when a delegation of colonists went to his mansion to welcome the new governor, they found him sitting on the front porch, crocheting a doily and wearing one of his wife’s dresses. At his first formal ball as governor, he wore a gown. His eccentricities continued until he was caught embezzling public money and was returned to England.

Don’t Catch the Flu!

This season’s flu just isn’t going away. It’s getting worse. And according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those requiring the most hospitalizations from the flu are seniors age 65 and older. The most common underlying medical conditions include cardiovascular disease, obesity, lung disease and metabolic disorders. Right on the heels of this bad news, however, a national network of caregivers has published a list of suggestions for avoiding the flu. If anyone knows about the flu, it’s the Visiting Angels (www.visitingangels.com)! They’ve created a “Fight the Flu Kit,” and their list makes sense: -- Paper towels: Use these in the bathroom or at the kitchen sink instead of hand towels, which can harbor germs. -- A forehead thermometer: No need to put anything in your mouth. Ask your pharmacist for brand recommendations. --Hand sanitizers with aloe: sanitize hands without drying skin --Pens: Carry your own in public when you have to sign something. Don’t touch something used by hundreds of others. --Lysol spray: Use at home on doorknobs, handles and light switches (spray on a paper towel first). Visiting Angels recommends doing this once a week. I vote for once a day. The virus can live up to 48 hours on plastic and stainless steel. --Hand soap: not necessarily antibacterial. Hand sanitizer wipes: Use on everything you touch out in public, like shopping-cart handles and seats, door knobs, sinks, telephones and library books. If you can’t sanitize it, wash your hands as soon as you can. (I hate to say it, but this might be the time to avoid libraries.) With a little luck and a lot of common sense, we can get through this season without getting the flu!

$408 $458 $508 For Qualifying Individuals How to Avoid Scams on Craigslist

Most consumers are looking for bargains, and many cruise the Internet looking for low prices. While it’s possible to get good deals online, it’s also possible to be pulled into a scam, whether you’re buying or selling. Scambook (www.scambook.com) -- billed as an online resolution platform dedicated to getting justice for consumers -- has taken a close look at one popular national site, Craigslist (www.craigslist.org). Craigslist offers free online ads broken down by category and city. Ideally, with Scambook’s list of caveats, you won’t need its resolution services. These tips can apply to nearly any website that lets people sell directly to others. --Trust your instincts. If an ad seems phony, don’t pursue it. --Stay local. It’s a red flag if someone makes up excuses about why they can’t meet, or why they want you to ship something. --Don’t get involved in cashier’s checks, money orders or wire transfers. Deal in cash only. If it’s a large amount of money, meet in a bank. --Use a counterfeit-bill detection pen. You can get one for a few dollars

at an office supply store. --Don’t use online escrow. These sites are typically run by scammers. --If buying, be sure to see the goods in person before you commit. At the same time, if someone wants to buy something you’re selling without even seeing it, beware. A scam is coming. --Beware of job scams. Chances are it’s an attempt to extract personal data from you. Visit the job’s location before you supply any information for a background check. --Beware ads that claim to be “certified” by Craigslist. --Check out the buyer/seller. You can use Scambook and Google to see if someone is who he claims to be. --Don’t give out personal information in a public ad online. Use Google Voice to create a free disposable phone number (https://voice. google.com). --If a buyer has to collect an item at your home, put it outside and don’t let him in the house. Have a friend with you. Whenever you deal with an unknown person online, your risk doesn’t stop at potential identity theft. It can extend to robbery, harassment and even physical assault if you meet the person alone. Whether you’re looking for a snow blower, an apartment or a job, do your homework before committing to any deals.

Golf Mental Game: Coping with Golf ’s Emotional Rollercoaster for Duffers By: Wayne W Hudler Golfers are a strange bunch. We do love this game yet we are so frustrated by it. If are round has more frustration than joy we grumble, growl and complain about our play and our score. On the other hand if the round has more joy than frustration we leave the course proud, laughing and wanting to get back soon. You probably already realize that golf is an emotional rollercoaster. From shot to shot, hole to hole, round to round and season to season we are constantly riding up and down with our emotions and performance. Over the course of time we develop an attitude that reflects our emotional state at any given time based on what we think of ourselves or our performance. Our body language, facial expressions and our speech tell others around us which attitude we showing at the moment. Attitude makes all difference is an old saying. It applies to all aspects life and golf is no exception. Hank Haney, one of Golf Digest’s 50 Greatest Teachers, has said that a student with a bad attitude is what he hates the most. A student that is too hard on themselves comes in a close second. He feels like they have forgotten just how hard of a game that golf is and that overcoming struggles is as much a part of the game as driving or putting. The key to improvement is a positive attitude and a healthy work ethic. What about you? When it comes to golf are you too hard on yourself? Do you expect to play near perfect golf while carrying a 15 handicap? Seems unrealistic too me. Do you get down on yourself for mistakes? Even Tiger makes mistakes. If you judge yourself too harshly and begin to criticize you and your performance this is destructive negative criticism. It ruins your attitude and creates shame needlessly. You are mentally saying to yourself that you are not good enough to perform the way you expect. You can react differently and create a different outcome in the process. Try this mental toughness technique next time you’re on the course. Mental Toughness Tip The technique is called constructive self-criticism. When you have just failed to please yourself instead of speaking negatively use more constructive language. By speaking positively you reach down into your personal pride. Instead of saying, “Gosh, I suck at this game” try “I know I’m can play better than this. I have before and there is no reason I can’t do it again now”. You’ve seen great athletes do this for years. They are said to “reach down” or to be “playing with all heart”. They were able to do it because they fundamentally believed in themselves and refused to get on a negative train of thought about themselves or their ability. You can do that too. Think positively. Speak positively. Play positively. Whatever the final outcome you performance will be better than if you have taken the negative approach. Emotions drive feelings and vice versa. Take charge of them by taking charge of your thinking and you will be able to better cope with golf ’s emotional rollercoaster.

The only pest control that pays you back! You earn money within the first year by putting money back in your pocket after having tap installed.

Benefits

T•A•P saves money! When added to existing insulation or installed on its own, T•A•P helps keep comfortable air in the living area of your home. This reduces the required energy needed to heat or cool your home and, in turn, reduces your heating and cooling bills. T•A•P reduces noise! T•A•P reduces unwelcome noise from outside and helps create a peaceful environment inside the home. Insulated interior walls reduce annoying noises (such as toilets flushing and appliances running) inside a house. T•A•P controls pests! In addition to conserving energy and reducing unwanted sound, T•A•P also responsibly eliminates many common household pests. T•A•P is Green! With so many products claiming to be “green” these days, it is often difficult to discern which products truly are environmentally responsible. When viewed in the context of the entire product life-cycle (from production to operation to disposal), cellulose insulation is one of the greenest building products in the world. Cellulose insulation takes less energy to make than other insulation products, is made from 80%+ recycled paper, reduces a home’s carbon footprint by saving energy, and provides no postinstallation waste. T•A•P is the only product labeled by EPA to control insects that also bears an Energy Star label!

Testimonial

CK - The Villas at Glenlakes I just wanted you to know how very pleased I am with your service. At the time you quoted my job, new insulation, you advised that I would see a reduction in my power bill. You were absolutely right. It has indeed been reduced.
