TIDBITS® SAYS … IT’S BEEN AGES!

by Kathy Wolfe How much do you know about how our culture has evolved throughout the ages? This week, Tidbits explores the progress made over the centuries. • Archaeologists general divide prehistoric eras into three ages – the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age – named such for the material used for making implements and weapons. During the Stone Age, stone was fashioned with a sharp edge or a point, with the oldest known stone tools excavated from several sites in what is now Ethiopia. The Stone Age is divided into three sub-eras, the Paleolithic era (early), roughly 70,000 to 20,000 B.C., the Mesolithic era (middle), 20,000 to 7000 B.C., and the Neolithic era (new), 7000 to 3000 B.C. The period of the Bronze Age is considered to be from 3000 to 1200 B.C., and ushered in the use of copper and tin with the alloy bronze in the manufacture of tools and weapons. The Iron Age occurred between 1200 and 600 B.C., when the harder and tougher iron replaced bronze. Cultural changes accompanied the difference in metal, as newer agricultural practices, religious beliefs, and artistic styles evolved. Decorative designs on ornaments and pottery became prevalent. Blacksmiths were hammering items into shape, advancing away from the Bronze Age’s method of casting. Turn to page 2 for more!

• According to Greek mythology, there are several stages of human existence on Earth. During the Golden Age, the first race of mortals, dubbed the golden race (meaning good and noble), was created by the gods and held conversations with them. There was an endless abundance of food and no need for agriculture. This age was characterized by peace, harmony, and prosperity. The mortals lived to an old age while maintaining their youthful appearance, and eventually died very peaceful deaths. The Silver Age followed, with the mortals described as foolish and immature, who refused to worship the gods and goddesses. According to mythology, this so angered Zeus, he destroyed the silver race. The mortals of the mythological Bronze Age were hardened and tough, caught up in wars. This race was undone by their own violence. The Heroic Age was the period of heroes who fought at Troy. In the Iron Age, pain and evil ran rampant, with humans living in toil and misery, and with no shame over wrongdoing. • The period of European history from the 5th to the 15th centuries is referred to as the Middle Ages. It began after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the abdication of Romulus Augustus in the year 476. The early Middle Ages were called the Dark Ages, lasting until about 1000, during which time there was a drastic deterioration in cultural development and the economy, as well as an increase in wars. The part of the Middle Ages commonly known as the Medieval Period, began around 1000, and continued until the Renaissance began in the 16th century. Gothic art and architecture appeared during this era. • The goal of the religious wars known as the Crusades during the Middle Ages was to restore the holy places in Jerusalem. Pope Urban II begged Catholic armies to go to war against Muslim forces in the Holy Land. • The Age of Discovery started in the early 1400s and continued to the 1600s. Also called the Age of Exploration, it was the time when Europeans began travels in search of new sea trade routes to what they thought were the East Indies. The Portuguese and Spanish dominated the exploration – Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Balboa, Cortes, Ponce de Leon, and, of course, Columbus were the leaders of the more well-known voyages of discovery. • When the Earth undergoes a long-term reduction in surface and atmospheric temperatures, glaciers and ice sheets may expand. This is known as an ice age, or more accurately, a glacial age. Experts say there have been at least five major ice ages over the Earth’s history. They are probably the result of an interaction between very small changes in the Earth’s orbit, changes in ocean currents, and changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We can see the effects of glaciers across the continent – the Great Lakes and most of Minnesota’s and Wisconsin’s lakes were carved out by glaciers and filled up with melting water. • During the 17th and 18th centuries, the world moved into the Age of Enlightenment, a cultural movement promoted by the intellectuals of that time, such as Isaac Newton and Voltaire. They attempted to lead the world away from superstition, irrationality, and tyranny and toward knowledge through science and reason. It was based on faith in nature and belief in human progress, with hostility toward organized religion and monarchy. The “enlightened” believed that people were naturally good and would work to further the happiness of others. • The period between 1750 and 1850 was the Industrial Age, when dramatic advances in manufacturing, transportation, and technology produced powerful changes in the economy and culture. The introduction of steam power and improvements in mining created huge advancements. Manufacturing machines allowed mass production of goods. • The 1920s, commonly called the Roaring Twenties, was a time of economic prosperity and rapid industrial growth. Drastic social changes came along, including the growth of jazz music, which was so popular that the decade became known as the Jazz Age. The sounds of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, and Benny Goodman dominated popular music. It was a time of breaking with tradition and turning toward modern technology. Young people took joy in shocking the older generation – women bobbed their hair and wore short skirts with silk stocking, taking on the nickname “Flappers.” The Jazz Age came tumbling down on October 29, 1929, with the crash of the stock market, ushering in the Great Depression. • We entered the Atomic Age when the first atomic bomb was detonated over Japan in 1945. The phrase Atomic Age was invented by a New York Times journalist named William Laurence, who was the official journalist for the U.S. Manhattan Project, which developed the first nuclear weapons. After witnessing the Japan bombings, he wrote a series of articles supporting the advantages of the new weapon. • Today we are part of the Information (or Digital) Age, characterized by our increases in technology and how we receive our information. We are also in the Social Age, which places more emphasis on people’s needs through various social networks.

Paint Infant Clothing at a Baby Shower Hosting a baby shower? There’s a great deal to think about, from the guest list to the food and fun. Traditionally, the “fun” part includes baby-themed guessing games, but when Ruthie Beahrs threw a shower for her sister this past fall, she knew a DIY craft activity would trump the games and score high on the entertainment factor. And it did. Ruthie picked up 100 percent cotton one-piece-style outfits with snaps (one for each guest to decorate) in sizes newborn to 2 years and some paint supplies. She also cut stencils for those who preferred pre-made designs. When the guests gathered, each dipped and dabbled in colorful paints, adding their creative touches to the clothing. Now, neat stacks of adorable outfits fill the dresser of 9-week-old Hazel Mae. “I think of my friends whenever I pull one out of the drawer, and since they are in ascending sizes, she will be dressed in the wearable art for a long time,” says new mom Christie Fitch. Whether you are throwing a baby shower or putting together a group gift, following is how to decorate inexpensive cotton outfits or T-shirts. Here’s what you need: --Prewashed white 100 percent cotton baby one-piece-style outfit with snaps or newborn- and toddler-size cotton T-shirt --Cardboard sheet --Cookie cutters or pre-made stencils --Fabric paints in squeeze bottles --Paper plate --Small foam paintbrushes or sponges clipped to clothespins Here’s the fun: 1. Lay the one-piece outfit on a work surface. Place cardboard between the two layers of fabric to protect the reverse side from any paint that may soak through. Choose a cookie cutter or a pre-made stencil -- a star, moon, heart, duckling, anything goes! Place it anywhere on the fabric. 2. Pour a little permanent fabric paint onto a paper plate. Dip in the small foam paintbrush. Tape a stencil on the fabric, or hold the cookie cutter firmly in place and start dab-dab-dabbing inside it, making sure to reach all the edges. You don’t have to put equal density of paint all over the shape. A little variation actually adds interest. When you’re through, lift the stencil or cookie cutter to see the lovely design. 3. Once the paint is dry, remove the cardboard and if the paint bottles say to do so, now is the time to iron on the reverse side to set the color. Resource: Ruthie downloaded free templates from the blog www. needleandspatula.com and made plastic-coated freezer-paper stencils. Click Patterns/Tutorials to find this alternate way to do the craft.

No Bad Breath, So Why Brush Teeth? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What are the risks if I don’t brush my dog’s teeth? He doesn’t have really bad breath, so I don’t see the point. -- Frank G., Houston DEAR FRANK: Good question! Periodontal disease is a problem that develops over time. Your dog’s breath might be OK now, but his teeth and gums could be slowly deteriorating as plaque builds up. And while bad breath often signals gum disease, it isn’t the only indicator of a problem. Brushing your dog’s teeth regularly helps prevent periodontal disease. A dental checkup and cleaning at the veterinarian’s office every six or 12 months is important too, because the vet will remove built-up plaque and also diagnose problems or point out potential issues that you can head off early. According to vets at VCA West Los Angeles, there are more reasons to brush your dog’s teeth. --Pets often hide dental pain, like a toothache or abcess. Frequent brushing means you’re more likely to realize there is a problem and take your dog to the vet to get it checked out. --Severe periodontal disease can weaken a dog’s jawbone to the point where it breaks. --Periodontal disease can lead to infections in a dog’s blood or heart. --Oral cancer can be caught and treated earlier with regular veterinary dental cleanings. VCA West L.A. added that veterinary dental cleanings are usually done while the dog is under anesthesia, to prevent stress and make the dog more comfortable. It also advises that small dogs, and dogs that eat only soft foods, need more frequent cleanings.

New Records System Close to Rollout Remember the elaborate plans to hook up computer systems between the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs so that all medical records were instantly available? One set of records would follow an individual from active duty all the way through veteran status. It was to be ready in 2017 and was called the integrated electronic health record (IEHR). That proposed plan has been dumped. Now the idea, officials say, is to get as much of this system in place as quickly as they can. Instead of going with the full program, a pilot program will begin this summer at a few rehab centers. By December, they hope to standardize the data between the VA and DoD and create real-time data exchanges. Veterans will be able to access all of their information, including lab tests, notes and prescriptions, and take it to any doctor. Doctors will be able to access health records at any VA or DoD facility. By the end of the year, they’ll have finished the upgrade to the graphic interface across both the VA and DoD systems. By early next year, a system will be used that will allow veterans to download their medical records in a format that can be read by both the DoD and VA. When finished, the system will have medical records on 18 million active-duty personnel and veterans. In a meeting with Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said, “Some have argued that we should build a perfect system. Some argued that we’ll never be able to do this. But for the first time, both DOD and VA have come together to say we can get this done.” This is a positive step forward.

Differences Between Hepatitis B and C

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband and I are in our 50s. Both of us had an exam this year from different doctors. Blood tests showed that we both have hepatitis C. Neither of us feels sick, and neither of us ever remembers acquiring this infection. Our doctors say we don’t need any treatment. What is the treatment if we ever do? Are we infectious to others? -- K.K. ANSWER: In North America, hepatitis B and C are the two most common kinds of viral hepatitis. In the United States, about 1.25 million are infected with hepatitis B virus. Five percent of infected people go on to develop a chronic infection, one in which the virus remains in the liver, and these people face the possibility of coming down with liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. A vaccine for the prevention of hepatitis B is available. Hepatitis C infects around 3 million Americans. In contrast with hepatitis B, around 70 percent to 80 percent will have a chronic infection. A sizable number will come down with liver cirrhosis or cancer, but that doesn’t happen right away. It takes 20 or more years before those complications arise.

When treatment of hepatitis C is advised, two medicines have been given simultaneously for many years. Those drugs are peginterferon and ribavirin. About 50 percent of chronic hepatitis C patients respond well to this regimen. However, blacks have a poorer response, with only 25 percent achieving viral suppression. A true breakthrough has arrived in the treatment of hepatitis C. Two new drugs, telaprevir (Incivek) and boceprevir (Victrelis) have had a huge impact in improving treatment success. Either of these drugs, given in conjunction with the standard treatment of ribavirin and peginterferon, greatly increases the cure rates for blacks and whites. An initial sickness after acquiring hepatitis C virus is rare, and, that’s why you and your husband didn’t realize you were infected. The virus can be transmitted through blood transfusions (no longer a threat), sharing needles for drug injections, rarely through sexual relations and household contact, but more possibly through promiscuous sex and in ways yet to be determined. You’re not a threat to others. The booklet on hepatitis describes these infections and their treatment, not including the latest treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No 503W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Social Security Gets Online Access

If you have a computer with Internet access, you can have your own account at Social Security, even if you’re not yet collecting benefits. You’ll be able to do a number of things with your account, including check your payment history, look at your earnings record, get your benefit verification letter and make changes to your direct-deposit information. The benefit letter can come in handy if you need to apply for other benefits or loans. There’s no waiting for the letter to be mailed. If you don’t receive benefits yet (but are age 18 or older), you can get information and estimates of benefits you’ll receive in the future, your earnings record and estimates of the Social Security and Medicare taxes you’ve paid in. Why would you want to do this? There’s the convenience, of course. But it also will save Social Security some money. Instead of having people send out the benefit verification letters, you’ll be able to print it immediately. To open an online account, click on the My Social Security tab at www.socialsecurity.gov. Be prepared to answer questions only you would know the answer to. You’ll set up a user name and password. The requirements are that you have an email address, a Social Security number, a mailing address in the U.S. and be at least 18 years old. First, though, make sure your computer’s virus program is up to date, including your firewall and WiFi settings, if you have a router. If you’ve had a My Social Security Account in the past and you already get benefits, your password will no longer work. They’ve revamped the website and you’ll need to create a new account.

¥ You might be surprised to learn that 20 percent of American families don’t have bank accounts. ¥ It was in the late 1930s when Harry Reeves, a writer for the Donald Duck cartoon, decided that introducing three nephews would open up a lot of story lines. At a loss for names for the characters, Reeves asked Jim Carmichael, who also worked on the cartoons, for suggestions. Carmichael was busy with his own work, but in glancing down at the newspaper on his desk he noticed Thomas E. Dewey and Huey P. Long were both mentioned in headlines, so he suggested Huey and Dewey. A friend named Louie Schmitt stopped in to say hello at that moment, so he added Louie as the third nephew.

Watch for Extra Fees to Use Credit Card

¥ The way some items are packaged these days, you need to be Houdini to get into them. When you’re dealing with blister packs -- items sealed inside a hard plastic wrapper that looks to be heat-crimped on the outside -- try your can opener. You can run it around the edge of stubborn plastic packages, enough to get the item out. It’s more secure and safer than a carpet knife or razor. ¥ Want to be able to tell at a glance which key belongs to the front door, the shed, your grandma’s house, etc.? Raid your (or your wife or daughter’s) stash of nail polish to paint the tops of keys to color-code them. ¥ “Styrofoam trays that come with meat or in the produce area are very handy helpers for lots of little jobs. If yours are clean

and unmarred, wash with hot, soapy water, rinse and dry for later. They are perfect for sending a friend home with leftovers, as you can cover the meal with plastic wrap. There is then no need to return a plate.” -- D. in Indiana ¥ For a deck of playing cards that has gotten sticky, put it in a bag (paper or plastic) and add a bit of baby powder. Shake vigorously. Take the cards out and shuffle to get rid of the extra powder. They are likely good as new. ¥ “Tidy loosely folded electric cords by storing them in cardboard tubes. The tubes can be cut to fit from a paper towel roll, or you can use a smaller toilet paper roll. Even long cords can be stored together in a gift-wrap core. Do not overfill a tube, nor wind any electrical cord too tightly.” -- O.R. in Nevada ¥ If you have a juice spill on clothing, try using club soda to remove it while the stain is fresh.

If ever there was a reason not to use credit cards, we now have another one: Merchants in most states are now permitted to tack fees on to your purchase if you pay with a credit card. A class-action lawsuit, filed in 2005 and settled last summer, permits merchants to charge varying percentages for your use of plastic. The allowed fees will range from 1.5 percent to a maximum 4 percent of your total purchase. Warnings, however, are required. Merchants will need to give before and after warnings about the fees. There must be a notice at the store entrance, at the checkout and on your receipt. Shopping on the Internet won’t necessarily relieve you of the surcharge. You’ll need to be warned there in advance, too, but you likely won’t get that warning until you select which credit card you’ll use while in the shopping cart. There are 10 states, however, that have chosen to use the power of their own legislation to ban the extra fees. Those states are California, Colorado Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas. If you’re in a state that allows the fees, you’ll need to do your homework even more when considering whether to use a credit card, especially for big-ticket items, such as online travel arrangements, furniture and car rentals. There are two solid reasons to reconsider your use of credit cards: 1. The prices merchants charge for goods and services already include the fees (known as “swipe fees”) they must pay to the credit-card processors, as they’ve had to pay that for many years. By paying an additional fee for using a credit card, you’re paying that amount twice. 2. Credit-card use comes with interest charges. With the addition of the surcharge just for using the card, consumers need to consider whether purchases are worth it. Check whether a particular merchant is adding on the fees (they’re not required to) and make a point of avoiding that establishment. Let the manager or owner know why you won’t be shopping there. If enough customers do that, they’ll notice. If you plan to use your credit card to take advantage of a sale, inquire about a fee to use your card and reconsider whether you’re actually going to save any money once you add that fee to your credit card interest.

“If It SwImS we’ve Got It” ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your soft-hearted self is drawn to a tempting offer. But your hard-headed half isn’t so sure. Best advice: Do it only after every detail is checked out to your liking. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your inventive mind should help you find a way to get around an apparently impassable barrier and make yourself heard. Your efforts get you noticed by the right people. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re enjoying this creative period. But by midweek, you’ll need to emphasize your more pragmatic talents as you consider a risky but potentially lucrative move. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An unexpected rejection could turn into something positive if you pocket your pride and ask for advice on how you can make changes that will make the difference. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Lion’s heart gives you the courage to push for answers to a job-related situation. Stay with it. You’ll soon find more believers coming out the ranks of the doubters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your curiosity pays off this week as you push past the gossip to find the facts. What you ultimately discover could lead you to make some changes in your plans. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new sense of enthusiasm helps get you out of on-the-job doldrums and back into a productive phase. Family matters also benefit from your more positive attitude. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A bit of nostalgia is fine. But don’t stay back in the past too long or you might miss seeing the signpost up ahead pointing the way to a new opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you feel you need to take more time to study a situation before making a decision, do so. Don’t let anyone push you into acting until you’re ready. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) As the Great Advice Giver, the Goat really shines this week as family and friends seek your wisdom. Someone especially close to you might make a surprising request. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Spiritual concerns dominate part of the week before more worldly matters demand your attention. An old promise resurfaces with some surprises attached. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’re in a highly productive period and are eager to finish all the projects you’ve taken on. But don’t let yourself get swamped. Take a breather now and again. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for learning new things quickly and applying your knowledge to best advantage where needed.

The History of Women in Golf By: Richard Myers Ladies, the next time you grab your clubs and head out to the golf course for your weekly foursome, take a moment to reflect on the amazing contributions that women in golf have made throughout history. The contributions were not only to the game itself, but to your “right” to play this sport which was once reserved for men only. Our first tip of the hat goes to Mary Queen of Scots who in 1552, despite being a woman, was allowed to play golf anytime she cared to. History credits Her Royal Highness with coining the term “Caddy” which was a derivative of the her favorite word for these indispensible golf helpers who she called “Cadets”. It should also be noted that it was during her reign that St. Andrews, the world’s most famous golf course, was built, but it would be almost 400 years later that the first woman would be allowed to play there. Speaking of firsts, the year was 1890 and the earliest known mixed foursome hit the greens. This banner event for women in Golf featured winners Miss Carrie Low and

John Reid who soundly defeated Mrs. John Reid and Mr. John Upham. Apparently that first foursome featuring women in golf sparked some major interest among the ladies, because just one year later the still-operating Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island welcomed the first female duffers. The response was so overwhelming that the golf course management built a special 9-hole course especially for women in golf just two years later. The 1800’s proved to be an exciting decade or women in golf and, towards the end of 1893, the British Ladies Golf Union sponsored the first of a long line of British Ladies’ championships. Although Queen Mary was long gone, the Royal House was represented by tournament winner Lady Margaret Scott. Meanwhile, across the pond, the United States was waking up to the women in golf movement as evidenced by The first women’s’ golf tournament held in Morristown, NJ on a 7-hole course. This 1894 event was won by Miss Hollard A. Ford who finished 14 strokes under her nearest competitor with a then-amazing 97.

Not to be outdone by the Yanks, 1894 also marked the debut of the Australian Women’s National Golf Championship. By the year 1895, women in golf were becoming a common site and courses in most of the “civilized” countries started opening their doors to women. Even the staid Meadow Brook Club, in Hempstead, N.Y., got into the act by sponsoring the first Women’s Amateur Golf Championship which offered up a field of 13 women golfers. The trophy was taken home by Mrs. Charles S. Brown who finished with a 132. Fast forward to the present and it’s unlikely that there is a woman today who is old enough to remember the time when “No Women Allowed” signs were posted on their local links. Even young girls are active in the sport. Which reminds me; if you’re looking for a female role model to help you get your name on the woman in golf roles, you needn’t look any further than 16-year-old newly turned pro Michelle Wie. From what she’s shown so far, Michelle is sure to become a major entry in the annals of women in golf.
