This nimble clown has been performing his acrobatics and occasional magic tricks since the 11th century. The romance novel publishing company that took the name of Harlequin was founded in 1949 by a Canadian businessman. Today, the Toronto-based company publishes novels in 31 languages on six continents, with offices in Japan, Australia, Sweden, Spain, Greece, Brazil, and Turkey, among many others. Since its founding, more than six billion books have been sold. • The distinctive sound of the harmonica is achieved by blowing air into the instrument’s reed chambers. Each chamber has multiple reeds of varying sizes that vibrate when air is blown in or drawn out. Longer reeds will produce deep lower sounds, while the short reeds make higher pitches. The harmonica was developed in Europe in the early 1800s. • The prestigious Harvard University is America’s oldest institution of higher learning, established in 1636. It takes its name from an English clergyman, John Harvard, who was the first significant benefactor of the college, bequeathing his 400-volume library and half of his estate upon his death in 1638. The library’s humble beginnings have grown to the largest academic library in the United States. Eight U.S. presidents have graduated from Harvard, as well as 62 living billionaires. Haricot translates from the French word for “beans” and vert means “green.” French cut green beans are longer and thinner and more tender. • In 1901, 21-year-old William S. Harley drafted a blueprint of an engine designed to fit into a bicycle. Two years later, he and his partner Arthur Davidson offered the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle to the public, working out of a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed. Their first dealer opened for business the following year in Chicago. In 1906, their new factory was erected, measuring 28 x 80 feet. About 20,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles were used by the U.S. Army during World War I, with half of the company’s production during those years sold to the military. This year, the company expects to ship more than a quarter million motorcycles worldwide. • A person described as harum-scarum lacks a sense of responsibility and behaves in a reckless manner. It’s also the name of a 1965 Elvis Presley musical film, in which the King plays a kidnapped American in the Middle East who is recruited by a group of assassins. Elvis’ 24th album by the same name was released that year. • If you’re familiar with the terms picot and Kloster block, you may be an experienced embroiderer. These stitches are performed on hardanger fabric, a woven cotton material, typically with 22 stitches per inch. The technique is thought to have its origins in ancient Persia. A picot is a decorative loop achieved by twisting the thread around the needle. Kloster blocks consist of five parallel satin stitches.

Chasing the Carrot? By Toni Babcock Perfectionism for the Christian can be a dangerous personality trait, especially if it spawns an unhealthy relationship with the law of God as pertains to grace. Add “people-pleaser” to the equation and you’ve got John Bunyan’s slough of despond ready to sink Christian in a morass of self-doubt and spiritual defeat. Or liken the perfectionist as one peddling a treadmill to nowhere with a dangling carrot hanging just beyond his reach. The Apostle Paul found himself on such a treadmill. He takes the reader along in his failed pursuit of holiness in Romans chapter 7, and then onto his ultimate claim to victory in Romans chapter 8, realized through his identification with Christ (Romans 7:24-8:1 KJV). The Holy Spirit used what might have been a negative experience in Paul’s life to instill a deep and lasting work of sanctifying grace. Being a former “Pharisee of the Pharisees”, Paul had all the potential to become a perfectionist Christian, wounded and wretched, and peddling against the law of sin and death in pursuit of the “carrot”. God had other plans. He used Paul’s inner strife to convince him that without the power of God he could never get off that treadmill.
It must have been a mind bending revelation for Paul to conclude that even in all his religiosity, he was still essentially powerless and a failure in the pursuit of holiness. As you read Paul’s epistles it becomes clear that his experience in Romans chapter 7 and 8 became the catalyst that formed his systematic theology as well as catapulted his success as a preacher, an evangelist, and a church planter. Thanks to the saving grace of the gospel, the Apostle Paul learned how to relate to the law of God as a schoolmaster that pointed him to Jesus, not an interloper that held him hostage, (Galatians 3:23-25 KJV). He understood when Jesus called him to repent, Jesus also called him to believe, for faith was the key that unlocked the door to repentance. In this way repentance complimented the gospel of Christ without competing with the One who is All and does all. I imagine Satan loves to see Christians bogged down on a legal treadmill going to nowhere. He’d like you to think the carrot of approval or holiness is dangling just outside your reach. If you’re tied to a system that leaves you feeling robbed of your reward in Jesus, consider the following strategies: As with Paul, use your “treadmill experience” as a means of pointing yourself to victory in Jesus instead of allowing it to wear you down in defeat. Your experience can either

be a means for God to sanctify you, or the place where the devil sets up shop and begins to control your mind. To avoid his schemes, practice seeing yourself as victorious in Jesus. Whatever you do, STOP engaging the “religious flesh” in response to whatever voice you may be listening to. STOP assuming you must always be wrong and every other Christian you are listening to must always be right. STOP being a people-pleaser. STOP imagining the carrot of approval or holiness is dangling just outside your reach. Listen to what God’s word says to you, and practice what it means to “walk in the Spirit”. Above all develop a healthy relationship to the Law. Let it continually point you to the Savior, not become an interloper to pull you back under condemnation. If it is in your power to do so, remove yourself from any religious system where your faith and witness are being systematically eroded, especially if you are not strong enough to confront the problem on your own. God’s word reminds us, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage,” (Galatians 5:1 KJV). “if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law,” (Galatians 5:18 KJV). Read the Bible, engage your heart, your soul, and your spirit as well as your mind - then believe and do what it says.

But what really made me happy was to see so many of my shut-ins out riding around and enjoying the world. Hez’s Sister Nell’s mama who was too weak to get out of the house was in town shopping. Ellie Nickelsinger’s sister who can’t come on account of her kidney’s stood in line two hours to get into the show named, “The Miracle Worker.” Yes sir, it thrilled my heart to see what I saw. I ought to have a packed house Sunday with all my sick folks being healed and shut-in’s being set free. I just hope they don’t overdo it and have a relapse. I gotta go now and play with my smallest youngun. He’s the farmer and I’m the goat. Tin cans will be easy to eat after what I just swallowed. I would think there are many preachers who have experienced similar excuses. Are you making excuses to stay out of church? When we stay out of church, we are missing a blessing..
