TIDBITS® KEEPS THE BEAT WITH MARCHING BANDS by Patricia L. Cook
Highway 59 3391 S McKenzie St Foley AL 36535
This Tidbits examines where and when marching bands originated and other trivial matters to help us stay in step with the bands. • The first marching bands started many centuries ago with military organizations. The needs of military groups to get thousands of troops moving in the same direction quickly, without mishaps, were best met if everyone stayed in rows, the same distance apart. Orderly movement was easiest if it was done in an organized manner. Because many groups did not have musical instruments, chants of, “Left – left, left, right, left,” giving instruction on which foot should be down helped accomplish the tasks. As military troops grew around the world, choruses of encouragement and sometimes humor were added. • When available, drums were added to help troops stay together as they progressed along the way. Musical instruments were added through the years and melodies were great for keeping soldiers encouraged and giving them a sense of pride. • During the Revolutionary War in America, soldiers marched to fifes and drums. The Civil War brought the development of drum and bugle corps. During the big wars: World War I and II, full brass, percussion and woodwind bands formed. • Early military troops in Scotland and some places in Canada

marched to drums and bagpipes. Some still use this style. • Military traditions are still used by modern marching bands. Bands usually march in formation and use orders of “attention”, “about face” and “forward march.” Most marching band uniforms resemble military uniforms. • The marching bands that most people think of are university, college, and high school bands that perform at football games and in parades. Halftime shows can be quite elaborate and require hours of training. • The marching band credited with the first modern halftime show at a football game was the Marching Illini of the University of Illinois in 1907. It occurred at a game against the University of Chicago. • The first band to break the tradition of military ranks and form a letter on the football field was Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. The letter, of course, was the “Block P” for Purdue. The first time it was on the field was in 1907 under the direction of Paul Spotts Emrick who was the first band director and served the university band for 49 years, from 1905-1954. • Emrick came up with the plan for the “Block P” after seeing a flock of birds flying in a “V” formation. He decided that if birds could make a letter a band surely could replicate the action in a formation on a football field. The Purdue “All American” Marching Band still forms the P before every home game. • Purdue is also known for what is considered to be the “World’s Largest Bass Drum.” The original drum built by Leedy Corporation in Indianapolis in 1921 is still used today. • The large drum is about eight feet (2.4 m) in diameter, nearly four feet (1.22 m) wide between the drum heads and more than 10 feet (3 m) high when mounted on the field carriage built for rolling it around. A crew of four bandsmen handling the drum must have accurate timing and placement for the two beaters to keep accurate time with the band. • Now, in case you have heard about “Big Bertha” and wonder where she fits in with the above story about the “World’s Largest Bass Drum,” read on. • Big Bertha is the large drum that belongs to the University of Texas. Created for the University of Chicago, Bertha’s first game was when Chicago played Princeton on October 23, 1922. When Chicago stopped its football program, band at the university was also discontinued. At that time, the large drum was put in storage. • Colonel D. Harold Byrd, a Texas Longhorn band supporter purchased Bertha from the University of Chicago in 1955. Bertha’s dimensions are eight feet (2.4 m) in diameter, 54 inches (1.37 m) wide and more than 10 feet (3 m) high when mounted on her trailer. Called the “sweetheart of the Longhorn band,” Big Bertha is escorted by the “Bertha Crew.” • Members of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity of Purdue challenged their Texas fraternity brothers to a drum showdown in 1961 to settle the question of which band had the largest bass drum. They planned the showdown at the fraternity’s national convention in Wichita, Kansas. Purdue kept its side of the promise and loaded their drum on a truck and headed west. They stopped in Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City and Topeka, pushing their drum through the streets showing off. • When the Purdue students and their drum arrived in Wichita, they discovered that their Texas fraternity brothers didn’t bring their drum. By default, Purdue declared their drum as the “World’s Largest Drum.” Since then, the exact measurements of the Purdue Big Bass Drum have been kept secret, preserving the mystique of its existence. • Marching bands exist in universities, colleges, senior and junior high schools for more than just football games. They also perform at other school events and parades. Many large parades across the country are magnificent venues for marching bands. • The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is one of the famous parades that marching bands love to participate in. There are usually about a dozen bands that are chosen from entries received from the band directors. Having a unique feature helps a band get chosen. Participants have come from all 50 states and even as far away as Guatemala. A band that always performs and is a crowd favorite represents New York’s own police department (NYPD). • Independence Day (Fourth of July) parades across the nation are filled with patriotic floats and marching bands playing patriotic music. One of the largest parades is, naturally, the National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D. C. The 2012 parade had 28 bands mostly from military units and high schools. There were also marching platoons from all of the military services: Army, Marine, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. • Marching bands put in many hours of practice and training to get their steps and tunes right. Many dedicated musicians get as much of a thrill by participating in marching drills as they do in hearing the music.

Tweet Treats Attract Birds to Your Yard Welcome feathered friends to snack at feeders that you and your kids can make in minutes ... no saw, hammer or woodworking equipment required. Hang one or more of them from a post or tree branch and enjoy the reward of seeing birds peck-peck-pecking away at the treats you’ve left for them. In the wild, birds typically thrive on a menu of seeds, nuts and fruits. Here are some ideas for making simple tweet treats. --String peanuts in their shells using a plastic needle and about 24 inches of yarn. Tie the loose ends together and loop over the branch of a tree or bush. Peanut shells are soft enough for many birds to crack, so that they can get the nutmeat inside. --Make kebabs on a string or stick with chunks of stale bagels, apple halves and dates. --Create a natural seed basket by cutting off the top third of a large fresh orange. Scoop out the fruit and eat it for a snack while you work. Poke three holes equidistant from each other below the rim. Slide three pieces of twine or string through the holes and knot in place. Bring the loose ends together and tie to a tree branch. Fill the hanging orange feeder with birdseed. You also may wish to offer birds a convenient place to perch while they eat. For a perch, find a thin stick a few inches longer than the width of the orange. Cut slits on opposite sides of the orange. Slide the stick through. Birds have hearty appetites, so fill the feeder regularly and enjoy their spirited songs as they come and go. Extra idea: Observing, identifying and describing the faithful feathered friends is fascinating for children, so set out a pair of binoculars by your window and teach them how to hold and focus them: It’s one thing to spot a bird, and quite another to really look at it.

Going Off-Leash DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My puppy, “Sky,” is approaching a year old, and she is still a bit rambunctious. I’d like to take her to a nearby off-leash dog park, but I’m worried about how she will act around other dogs and people. -- John P., Portland, Maine DEAR JOHN: First, I want to commend you for putting so much thought into your decision to bring Sky to an off-leash park. It’s important to be considerate of how your dog will behave in social situations. The question now is, how exactly will she behave? My guess is that Sky has not spent a lot of time with other dogs. She’s old enough now to start socializing, but first make sure she has had all needed vaccinations. Start small -- schedule a play date with a friend or neighbor’s dog, and gradually build the number of dogs she’s around. Supervise her the entire time to make sure she gets along well with other dogs. If it isn’t possible to do a limited play date, look into weekly group training sessions with a professional trainer. These will reinforce basic obedience skills with Sky with the added benefit of socializing, in a controlled environment, with other dogs. If neither option is available, slowly introduce Sky to the dog park. Pick a time when few dogs are in the park. (You’ll need to scout the park on your own beforehand.) Keep her on the leash for the first few visits, especially when she’s meeting new dogs. Be a good park patron, too. Talk with the other dog owners while you’re there -- they can offer helpful advice. Pick up after Sky. Make sure Sky will respond to you and your commands both on and off leash.

Adaptive Sports for Disabled Vets
Disabled veterans who participate in adaptive sports experience less stress, less dependency on medication -- and more independence. The Department of Veterans Affairs knows this and has loaded their calendar with the Golden Age Games (for those age 55 and older), Summer Sports Clinics, Training-Exposure-Experience (TEE) Tournament (golf), Wheelchair Games and the Winter Sports Clinic. Coming July 13-18 is the 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Tampa, Fla. The 17 competitive events include air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, track and field events, handcycling, motorized wheelchair rally, nineball, power soccer, quad rugby, slalom, softball, swimming, table tennis, trapshooting and weightlifting. Registration deadline is April 15 and is limited to 550 athletes. Get your registration packet online (www.va.gov/opa/speceven/ssc) or call Paralyzed Veterans of America 800-424-8200, ext. 752 or 657. If you were OEF/OIF/OND, there is a grant program for expenses if this will be your first Games. If you want to go, get started on the paperwork. One requirement is that your doctor must sign a Physical Exam Form (Forms C & D). If you’re unable to attend, check for a sports club near you. The Sports Club Finder on the VA’s webpage linked above has a searchable index of clubs by state and ZIP code. For example, ZIP code 83709 (Boise, Idaho) lists Paralympic Sport Boise, which has summer swimming and triathlon. ZIP code 27105 lists Triad Trackers, which is a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) in Winston-Salem, N.C. The listing notes that 15 percent of the membership are disabled veterans. ZIP code 68134, which is Omaha, Neb., lists a chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. It offers both summer and winter paralympic sports, including archery, shooting, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, boccia, powerlifting, track and field, sled hockey and bowling.
tions? -- J.F.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Everything I read about urinary tract infections deals with women, including what you write. I am a 35-year-old man, and I just had a week of antibiotics for a urinary tract infection. Why is there this bias in dealing with female urinary infections over male infec-
ANSWER: The urinary tract infection we’re talking about is bladder infection, cystitis (sis-TIE-tiss). Both men and women come down with bladder infections, but the number of women who develop such an infection is far, far larger than is the number of men -- 30 times the number of men. The main reason for this is an anatomical one. The female urethra, the tube that empties the bladder, is much shorter than the male urethra. That allows bacteria to make their way into the female bladder with relative ease. Furthermore, sexual relations force bacteria into the female urethra, something that doesn’t happen in men.
People describe cystitis as a burning pain when passing urine. The infection makes a person want to empty the bladder frequently, and it’s a task that has to be taken care of quickly. At older ages, men develop almost as many bladder infections as do women. That’s because of prostate enlargement. An enlarged prostate gland makes complete emptying of the bladder impossible. Urine stagnates there and sets up an environment that favors bacterial growth. Don’t feel left out because you have had only one bladder infection. Recurrent bladder infections are truly unusual for men. If a man were to develop one bladder infection after another, then his doctor would have to look for conditions that lead to repeated infections. Diabetes is one. So is Crohn’s disease, an inflammation of the digestive tract. The inflammation fosters the development of a tunnel between the bladder and the inflamed area of the tract. Bacteria have free access to the bladder. These are only two examples of why cystitis recurs in few men. The booklet on urinary tract infections explains this common malady in detail and its treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. In short: trademark rights and infringement. Over the years, The Platters have had hundreds of personnel changes. As members left, they would spin off their own “Platters” pretender group. 3. Health Booth Can’t Replace Doctor
Coming to a Walmart or Sam’s Club near you: a self-service health booth. SoloHealth Stations are interactive kiosks that could keep you from going to your doctor for proper medical care. There, I’ve said it. I’m against them. Here’s how they work: You sit at a machine and answer questions about your lifestyle, what you eat and the health of family members. You get cuffed and have your blood pressure checked. Weigh in and get your eyes checked. Learn your BMI -- body mass index. Get advice on vitamins and pain management and heartburn. (How convenient that the machine will even tell you what aisle the vitamins are on.) One-stop health monitoring, say those who are responsible for putting these machines in Walmarts. But is a machine going to notice if you’re looking a bit pale? While it’s taking your blood pressure, will it also listen to your heart and notice just the faintest little blip that shouldn’t be there? How do you ask it questions? And what of privacy? You’ll enter a lot of personal information into the machine when you sit down for your do-it-yourself health exam. Where does that information go? Down the road, those same machines will be able to assess your diabetes risk, enroll you in a medical-care policy and who knows what else. There is a proposal to let these machines help you diagnose whether you have high cholesterol -- and even pick up an over-the-counter drug for it. Make yourself a promise: If you’re tempted to use one of these health kiosks, go ahead, but send the results to your doctor. It’s one thing to play with high-tech toys. It’s quite another to turn your health over to an electronic gadget without any human medical intervention.

¥ To get a really good shine on your windows, try using newspaper instead of a paper towel. Spray the window with your cleaner, and then just use the newspaper like a towel. Practically no lint! ¥ “We save the bread ends and any too-hard or stale bread in our freezer until we can get down to the lake and feed the birds and fish. The ducks especially love it.” -- E.F. in Wisconsin ¥ Drop a couple of crackers (saltines) in your sugar canister if you have problems with clumping. In an informal interview, it was learned, not surprisingly, that there are people who are leery about taking a vacation on a cruise ship. These folks cited events such as the partial sinking of a large ship on the Italian coast last year and the recent stranding of a ship for days without power in the Gulf of Mexico. Mentioned more frequently, however, was the possibility of Norovirus spreading like wildfire and making people sick on vacation. Whether you’re on the cautious side or are an experienced cruiser, if a summertime cruise is on your agenda, there are ways to do your homework before you sign up. Cruise Critic (www.cruisecritic.com/reviews) only debuted in March 2012, but has a wealth of information and reviews broken down by cruisers’ comments and editors’ picks. Right from the site you’ll be able to check prices on Expedia, Avoya Travel, CheapCruises.com, Direct Line Cruises, Cruise.com and Priceline.com Fodor’s (www.fodors.com/cruises/ships) has a wider variety of ships reviewed, and includes deals, guides and a blog, but the reviews aren’t by actual cruisers. On Cruise Ships (www.cruise-ships.com/reviews) you can compare nearly 800 cruise ships and ratings reviews by cruisers on the ship, condition, layout, amenities, service, food and entertainment. Additionally, you can click on the name of the reviewer and see if he/she has a long history of taking cruises. If you’re looking for more detailed information about your likely health aboard a cruise ship, start with the Vessel Sanitation Program run by the Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp). Look for the resources on Cruise Ship Outbreak Updates. You’ll see immediately that the actual number of ships affected by Norovirus is relatively small. You’ll also find a list of the ships affected, the dates and the name of the illness. Click on the sailing dates, and you’ll get detailed information about the number of passengers and staff who were ill. Also look for the Green Sheet Report, which gives a rating on the cleanliness of each ship. When it comes to the seaworthiness of the ship itself, the Coast Guard keeps a list of inspections and deficiencies at the Maritime Information Exchange (http://cgmix.uscg.mil/). Look for Incident Investigation Reports and search for any ship you’re considering. If you do take a cruise, post your comments and critique after your trip for the benefit of fellow cruisers.

“If It SwImS we’ve Got It” ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With your practical side dominant this week, it’s a good time to reassess your finances to see what expenses you can cut. Aspects also favor mending fraying relationships. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine-inspired determination to follow matters through from beginning to end pays off in a big way. Enjoy a well-earned weekend of fun with a special someone. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor re-establishing business relationships you might have neglected. A family member’s request needs to be given more thought before you make a decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) While you might appreciate the avalanche of advice coming from others, keep in mind that the intuitive Moon Child is best served by listening to her or his own inner voice. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s social life whirls at centrifugal speed this week as you go from function to function. Things slow by week’s end, giving you a chance to catch up on your chores. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Don’t let your stand on an issue cause a rift with a colleague. Insist on both of you taking time to reassess your positions while there’s still room for compromise. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An opportunity you’d been hoping for finally opens up. But read the fine print before you make a commitment, especially where a time factor might be involved. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your need to know what’s going on behind the scenes leads you to make some bold moves. Be prepared with a full explanation of your actions if necessary. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A lot of details need tending to during the early part of the week. The pressure eases by the 20th, allowing you to get back to your major undertaking. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A friend asks you to act on his or her behalf in a dispute. Be careful. You might not have all the facts you need in order to make a fair assessment of the situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new development might require you to cancel some of your plans. But you adapt easily, and by week’s end, you could receive welcome “cheering-up” news. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your recent workplace accomplishments boost your self-confidence just as you’re about to consider a potentially rewarding, although possibly risky, career move. BORN THIS WEEK: Your love of the arts is equaled only by your strong sense of justice. People can depend on you to always try to do what’s right.

Used Golf Balls and Back Yard Practice
By: Dave Pipitone
Are you satisfied with your golf score? If you want to impress your golf buddies, but keep shooting the same score in the 100’s after months into the golf season, you have to make a change. How? Practice! Let’s face it, the golf season in most areas of Canada and the U.S. runs from mid-April to late October. To make the best of the golf season, hone your game in your backyard by practicing with used golf balls. You can lower your golf score. If the golf season is seven months long, it can seem even longer when your scores don’t improve and when you don’t practice. Who wants to trudge down the fairway feeling bad because hitting topped balls, shanks, or slices that only look good on watermelons? Isn’t it embarrassing to admit to friends and family that you had the same lousy round yesterday as you did three or four months ago. Guess what - you get better by practicing golf shots. And you don’ t have to spend tons of money by going to the golf driving range every day. You can set up your own mini golf range right in your own yard. Here are tips to improve your golf score, impress your friends and smile when you look at the scorecard after your
round of golf. 1. Put an easy-to-use golf practice area in your backyard. For less than $100, you can buy quality used golf balls, a golf practice mat, a golf practice net, or even a golf practice cage. Just set them up in your back yard. Then, practice your golf swing with every golf club you have, from a driver to a sand wedge. When you set up your own practice area, you don’t have to worry about waiting in long lines at the golf range; you can practice when you want. 2. Target your short game with practice games. Get a basket, used tire, or a hula hoop. Practice your chipping by hitting used golf balls into the chosen the target. You will develop a feel for how hard to hit a golf ball. When you improve your aim, you will improve your game. 3. Practice often. If you think you only need to take a couple of swings, hit ten golf balls and feel you are ready to take on Tiger Woods, think again. In fact, just what are you thinking? Golf pros hit hundreds of practice shots a day to hone their aim, distance and muscle memory. If you can’t commit to a two hour practice session, break it up. Hit used golf balls into a net for 30 minutes in the early morning, chip into a tire for 15 minutes at noon and hone your short game in the evening.
4. Master one club at a time. Do you want to shave off strokes quicker than a triple blade razor on a soft beard? Try this. Think about your last ten rounds of golf. What money shots did you miss that would have lowered your score? If you are like most golfers, you probably realize that you could have saved dozens of strokes from shots that were under 100 yards from the green. Here’s what to do. Tell yourself “I’m getting down in two” to get a can-do mindset. Practice those shots. Expect to hit good shots, take only two strokes to put your golf ball in the hole and guess what? That is exactly what you will do. 5. Visualize your perfect golf shots. Many golf pros have a “mental” coach, a sports psychologist, to visualize a positive outcome. Here is what to do. Invest 10 minutes a day in sitting in a comfortable chair, closing your eyes and watching a mental movie of yourself driving straight and long down the middle of the fairway, or hitting a nine iron within twelve inches of the cup. Imagine leaping into the air or making a “YES!!!” fist pump with a lot of emotion. You will amaze yourself at the results. When you use quality used golf balls and practice these five tips, your golf score can only improve. All you need is reliable golf practice equipment to make your practice sessions effective.
