DIESEL EMISSIONS TEST
We’re in the thick of winter! Windows are frosty, the New Year is in, and we’ve settled in to wait the winter out until spring. Until the Groundhog makes his predication next month, sit back and let Tidbits give you some frigid facts on ice! • We start to see it when the weather dips below freezing. Whether as icicles on the edge of eaves or in an intricate hotel in Europe, that shivery, slick ice is everywhere you look, but don’t take it for granted. Did you know that modern refrigeration is often contributed to John Gorrie? This physician and inventor is considered the father of modern refrigeration. Dr. Gorrie gave up his medical career to study refrigeration and obtained a patent for a machine to make ice in 1851! • Let’s imagine ahead to summer and the sweltering heat. Do you know what can’t be beat on a hot day in July? An ICEE. The ICEE machine was invented by Omar Knedlik back in the 60s. Did you know that the logo you see today is the very same logo from the original ICEE machine? There was even an original rendition of the famous ICEE polar bear. When the weather gets warm again in a few months, go out and get yourself an ICEE, but don’t drink too fast and get a brain freeze! turn the page for more!

Interesting Stuff
BREAK THE ICE (continued): • This article may be called “Break the Ice”, but do you remember “Don’t Break the Ice?” The game was popular with several generations as it was first released in 1968 by Hasbro. The game consisted of 36 blocks arranged in a 6x6 square. Players take turns trying to knock out blocks of ice without causing the central block to fall. Another similar game was 1992’s “Thin Ice.” Players take turns placing marbles onto a thin sheet of tissue paper or “ice.” Players try to place as many marbles as they can on the ice without any breaking through. Sound like fun? You can still find these great games and more for sale online. • Do you like to cook? Thought about getting your degree in the culinary arts? Then perhaps the Institute of Culinary Education, or ICE, is right for you. ICE is located in New York City and is celebrating its 33rd anniversary this year. It was founded by Peter Kump in 1975 an originally only had five students. Today the institute has one hundred forty times that many students! Never heard of ICE? Well, don’t fret. You’ve probably heard of one of their alumna. Ashley Merriman was chosen to compete in the latest season of Bravo’s Top Chef. • Need more icy acronyms? Try U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is located within the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is a recent branch of the DHS. It was established in 2003. The branch handles the enforcement of U.S. customs and immigration laws. You can find out more about the branch and its programs by visiting www.ice.gov. • Do you know Robert Matthew Van Winkle? He was a teenager when he got his nickname, which you might recognize more than his given name. Van Winkle gained mainstream success with the release of his first rap single. The song sampled “Under Pressure” by David Bowie and Queen. Recognize him now? That’s right. It’s Vanilla Ice! • Ever heard of water ice? You have if you’re from the Philadelphia area. The term is a popular local nickname for Italian ice. If you’re from the area, you might also have heard of Rita’s, an Italian ice shop that first opened in Bensalem, Pennsylvania in 1984. Twenty-five years later and Rita’s has over 500 locations in the United States. There’s probably even a Rita’s near you. Find your local Rita’s by visiting them online at www.ritasice. com. • Now some of you might even be asking, “What is Italian ice? Is it ice cream? Is it shaved ice?” Not quite. Italian ice is made from either syrup of fruit puree that is mixed and frozen like ice cream. • The night was full of snow and now there are long, tapered icicles on the eaves of your roof. They form when warm air escaping your house causes snow on your roof to melt, but the temperature is still freezing out and this causes the melted snow to freeze again. To help prevent icicles on your house, make sure your house is well insulated and use a roof rake to prevent excess snow buildup on your roof. • It is said that Roman emperor, Nero, is one of the famous forerunners of frozen treats like ice cream. He reportedly sent men to retrieve snow from the mountains so his cooks could make him a frozen treat out of snow mixed with such things as honey or fruit. • What does the Executive Vice President of Production at Paramount Pictures have in common with the charming Southern city of Savannah, Georgia? Ice cream. Stratton Leopold and his family ran a multi-generation ice cream shop before Continued on page 5

A question was asked by a group of feline veterinarians four years ago: Is Vomiting Normal in Cats? My response was if there is a specific reason for vomiting it may be a normal reject response but if vomiting occurs more than twice a month it is abnormal. One colleague said that cats vomit regularly and as a species they are ‘vomiters’. Others were not quite sure how to answer because no one had asked this question and/or had gotten a specific answer. A group of clinical research veterinarians set out this year to find out if periodic chronic vomiting had specific causes or as it is commonly thought, chronic vomiting is commonly caused by hairballs and diet. A clinical investigation was planned to find answers to the problem(s). Cats that vomited more than twice a month were included in this study. A thorough history including diets, snacks and grooming habits were noted; physical examination; routine blood chemistries/urinalysis; abdominal ultrasound with measurements; and exploratory surgery with multiple biospies: of the liver, pancreas, 3-4 areas of the small intestine and any other tissue that appeared abnormal were performed. The pathologist did routine histopathology and studies with immunohistopathy to identify cell type. The age range of the vomiting patients was 2 to 18 years old. After 100 patients were studied there was one normal cat, 3 cats had eosinophilic gastroenteritis, 57 had gi lymphoma (cancer), and 39 cats had inflammatory bowel disease. The results of the study showed that prolonged vomiting truly had underlying causes other than hairballs and diet – this was totally unexpected. Vomiting cats need further workups as to the cause of the chronic vomiting. The good news is that the majority of these patients respond well to nutritional therapy, probiotic therapy and medications that are directed towards the specific cause of the problem. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. The magic of black is seen in jewelry made from onyx, a black chalcedony quartz with a delicate texture that is often carved into cameos. Though still popular with jewelry designers, onyx was especially popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. There’s an old legend about Cupid finding Venus asleep and taking the opportunity to cut her fingernails with an arrowhead. He left the clippings scattered on the sand and the fates turned them into stone so that no part of the heavenly body would ever perish. The stone, as the story goes, was onyx, which brings up an interesting question, “Did Venus wear Vamp?” There may be an explanation. Back in Greek times nearly all colors of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark black were called onyx. Later the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colors only. Black onyx is used often as a background for color play. Its fine texture makes it ideal for carving and therefore a favored material for today's lapidaries. Onyx was often used as the perfect foil for carved rock crystal or the 'drop dead red' of rubies in art deco designs. It is also popular in marcasite jewelry. Use onyx to add a little black magic to your jewelry design.

• Do you know how iceberg lettuce got its name? This mostly water based green, a classic in caesar salads, was actually called “crisphead lettuce” before the 1920s. Around this time, farmers in California began shipping the lettuce covered in crushed ice to help preserve it and the rest is history! • Would you care for some German eiswein? Maybe it’s more familiar to you by it’s English name of icewine? Eiswein first appeared in Germany around the late 1700s. Farmers noticed that grapes left on the vine and frozen produced a very sweet juice when pressed. The Germans began making wine from these frozen grapes. To be considered a true icewine in Germany, grapes must be pressed while frozen. Due to the intricate and specific way in which the grapes must be harvested, icewine is often more expensive than regular wine.

• Have you heard the one about the naming of Greenland and Iceland? Popular storytelling has it that Vikings, who didn’t want other people settling in their new found island, named the beautiful, green island Iceland and the icy, barren island Greenland to ward of unwelcome visitors and keep the island all to themselves. Truth has it that the name Iceland was given to the island by the Viking Flóki Vilgerðarson. He got the name from the icebergs floating in one of the fjords off the island. As for Greenland? It just gets a bad wrap in that story. Greenland, just like Iceland, is a beautiful country teeming with life. Don’t get us wrong, there is still plenty of ice, but there is also the color green!

That Real Estate Guy Happy New Year for 2015
First off I wanted to welcome everyone into the New Year. I hope everyone had a safe one and that it started out right. It is common for people to have resolutions and hopefully with consistency, able to carry it on throughout the year. Being that I come from all sorts of walks of life and am well-traveled, I’ve had the humor of knowing some interesting stories, I’m sure you have as well..…go ahead, take a minute and chuckle at some of the ones you may have heard. Some vows to stop procrastination? Some wanted to stop continuously speeding, even one wanted to go a whole year where she DIDN’T hit a kangaroo (I’m sure I gave away one place I lived). My personal resolution is to start aiding the Denver community relentlessly. From volunteer work in areas of need, to writing articles pertaining to my profession in real estate, as well as contributing a service to my home . I hope to see you all around and wish everyone a very happy 2015. Welcome to the New Year. Chris Heatherdale Home Direx, LLC 720-496-9301 www.homedirex.com Please see our ad on page 8 of Tidbits!

Brighten the sky without hiding the stars We're still in the long, dark days of winter. In the morning when we pull out of the driveway, it's dark - and often the same when we pull back in at night. It feels gloomy and even insecure. The good news is, we don't just have to endure seasonal darkness. There are cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions to brighten the gloom, welcome us home at the end of the day and make us feel more secure in our homes during the long, dark nights of winter. And the best news is that we can brighten our personal environments without adding light pollution to the night sky. The newest LED technology for outdoor lighting provides light where it's needed without creating pollution. As low-voltage lighting, it is also energy efficient, so it won't substantially raise your energy bill. Finally, it is a relatively easy retrofit around most homes that can even be done during the winter months as long as the ground is not frozen. The visual you get as you pull in and out of the driveway will give you a good read on whether more light is in order around your home. Here are a few more things to consider: Can people see your address in order to find your home at night? This is a strategic place to have light for obvious reasons. Are sidewalks and steps leading up to the entrance well lit for guests? Will they be able to see snow or ice in order to avoid it? Would security around your home be improved with more light in critical locations? According to law enforcement pros, a well-lit home is a major deterrent to break-ins. Will you be listing your home for sale? Realtors will tell you that outdoor lighting is on the top 10 list for curb appeal when selling a home. Could you improve winter interest in your yard by letting grasses shimmer in soft light or by highlighting an interesting shape or architectural element in your yard? Lighting extends the enjoyment of these special features. Embrace a greener option Low-voltage LED lighting uses up to 80% less energy than traditional lighting. LED bulbs also have a much longer life which by requiring less maintenance, adds to their convenience factor. Finally, they can brighten our homes without polluting the night sky and that keeps the stars shining bright for all to enjoy.

When is my toothbrush worn out? Your toothbrush has “had it” when the bristles point every which way. Change your toothbrush every three months, before it gets to “every which way”.
Q. A.
What about toothpaste? Early civilizations concocted various powders used to clean teeth. Ingredients included powdered fruit, ground up or burnt shells, sometimes mixed with honey and dried flowers. Other, less appetizing concoctions added rabbit heads, mice, lizard livers, and urine. (At least give them credit for being creative!) Sadly, many of these early toothpastes were highly abrasive or corrosive, which dissolved tooth anamel.

Longer than most of Cindy Rose us can remember. The toothbrush dates back to the Stone Age, when small twigs or sticks were mashed together to create a broader surface for cleaning around the teeth. The Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrush – in the 1490’s. Europe adopted the bristle toothbrush in the 17th century, and American colonial dentists encouraged its use. In 1880 the first electric toothbrush appeared, but was not very effective. The Swiss invented the first effective electric toothbrush right after World War II ended. In 1961 the first cordless electric toothbrush was marketed and soon became popular. Today we have a nearlyunlimited variety styles, colors, sizes, and designs of toothbrushes.

Toothpaste as we know it first came to market in the 1800’s. These early “modern” toothpastes included soap and chalk powders. The first toothpaste tube came on the scene in 1892. In 1956 Proctor and Gamble developed “Crest” toothpaste, which added flouride to fight cavities.

Sell Your Home For CASH! A man and his wife walked into a dentist's office. The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anesthetic, I don't have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it! We have a 10:00 am tee-off time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already...

I don't have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!' The dentist thought to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain." So the dentist asks him, "Which tooth is it sir?" The man turned to his wife and said, "Open your mouth Honey, and show him.... Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller! Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators. We haven't met yet! I don't trip over things, I do random gravity checks! Old age is coming at a really bad time! When I was a child I thought Nap Time was a punishment ... now, as a grown up, it just feels like a small vacation!

I don't have gray hair. I have "wisdom highlights". I'm just very wise. My people skills are just fine. It's my tolerance to idiots that needs work. Teach your daughter how to shoot, because a restraining order is just a piece of paper. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he would've put them on my knees. The kids text me "plz" which is shorter than please. I textback "no" which is shorter than "yes". I'm going to retire and live off of my savings. Not sure what I'll do that second week.
