On March 6, 1810, Massachusetts enacted the first state legislation requiring vaccination. It required every town to choose three people to superintend the inoculation of all inhabitants with the cowpox vaccine. Come along with Tidbits as we get vaccinated!

SMALLPOX ERADICATED • In George Washington’s day, one out of every five people in London bore the scars of smallpox. George Washington himself did, although he’s usually portrayed with clear skin. One out of every 3 children died of smallpox before their third birthday. • In the 1700s European people realized that if you recovered from smallpox, you would never get the disease again. Whenever a person came down with a mild, survivable form of smallpox, it was fashionable to organize smallpox parties. Friends and relatives would gather together in one house in order to catch the mild form of the disease together, and thus become immune to more deadly strains.

Interesting Stuff

SMALLPOX, cont’d • An English doctor named Edward Jenner was the first person to realize that people who had suffered from the relatively mild sickness called cowpox were immune to smallpox. • Jenner first tested his vaccine in 1796. At that time, about one out of every ten people in England died of smallpox. He inoculated an 8-year-old boy with weakened cowpox germs. Six weeks later, he inoculated the boy with smallpox. The boy did not come down with smallpox. He was immune. • The idea of vaccination had heavy opposition at first, but began to catch on after Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Cotton Mather, and Napoleon Bonaparte endorsed the idea. Napoleon had all of his troops inoculated. • Thanks to vaccination, the last known case of smallpox was reported in 1977.

THE STORY OF LOUIS • In the late 1800’s, a doctor named Louis was doing experiments with chicken cholera. To infect the birds, he grew pure strains of the cholera germs in his laboratory. One day by mistake he injected some chickens with cholera germs that had been sitting in a flask all summer long. He was surprised when the chickens did not get sick. He was even more surprised when he injected the chickens with a fresh, virulent strain of cholera and they still did not get sick. Putting two and two together, Louis knew he had just discovered a vaccination for cholera. • Next he experimented with anthrax. Again, an accident intervened. A thermometer in an incubator was off kilter, though he didn’t know it. He wondered why animals injected with anthrax did not come down with the disease— and then he found he’d been getting the germs too hot. Experiments showed that if he heated the anthrax germs before injecting them, the animal would become immune. But veterinarians refused to believe him. (cont’d)

LOUIS, cont’d • Frustrated, Louis challenged veterinarians to attend a public demonstration. All manner of newspapermen, scientists, and doctors attended the test. Two groups of 25 sheep were collected on a farm outside Paris. Louis vaccinated only one group. Two weeks later, all 50 sheep were injected with a powerful strain of anthrax. After two days, all of the vaccinated sheep were fine. And all of the unvaccinated sheep were either dead or dying. • Still, Louis wondered how the anthrax was spread from animal to animal. Talking with a shepherd one day, he noticed a piece of the pasture grass was a different color in one spot. The shepherd told him that it was where some anthrax-infected sheep had been buried the previous year. Examining the plot, Louis noticed worm droppings, which he took home and examined under the microscope. They were teeming with anthrax, which they had brought to the surface from the buried carcasses. Louis further reduced anthrax by advising people to burn anthrax infested animals rather than bury them. • Next Louis turned his attention to a dreaded disease of humans— rabies. Although he was unable to see the rabies germs through his microscope, he was able to prove they were there by transplanting drops of spinal fluid from rabid rabbits to healthy rabbits. The healthy rabbits would soon have rabies too. To make Continued on page 5

The Russian Czar Alexander II (1818-1881) has the distinction of having his name on this rare gemstone. The very first crystals were discovered in April 1834 in the emerald mines near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains. The discovery was made on the same day the future Czar of Russia came of age. Because the stone shows both read and green, the principal colors of old Imperial Russia, it became the national stone of Czarist Russia. George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932), master gemologist for Tiffany’s, produced some beautiful series of rings and platinum ensembles at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. This lovely stone was also used in Victorian jewelry produced in England during the Victorian era. The distinctive feature about this stone is its ability to change color. In daylight Alexandrite appears green or bluish-green but when brought into incandescent light it will turn to a soft shade of red, purplish-red or raspberry red. Because of its ability to change colors Alexandrite is one of the most valuable gemstones of all! Scarcity is another reason for its high value. Its formation required specific geological conditions and millions of years to form.

• Shortly afterward, a young boy who had been badly bitten by a rabid dog was brought to Louis. Louis had only tried his vaccine out on a single dog and was reluctant to try it on a human. But the boy’s mother was certain he would die without help. Louis administered his new vaccine, and the boy was saved. The news hit the papers and the world rejoiced to see the end of a dreaded disease. The boy grew up and became Louis’s assistant. In 1940, he committed suicide rather than unlock Louis’ crypt to the invading Nazi army.

He ground up a spinal cord that had been drying for two weeks, and injected it into the dog. The next day he injected a spinal cord that had been drying for 13 days, the next day one that was 12 days old, and so on. After 14 daily injections, the dog was given a dose of full-strength rabies virus. The dog remained healthy. (Cont’d next page)

• When Jack Warner (of Warner Bros.) was overseeing the making of the film “The Story of Louis Pasteur” his advisers grumbled that it was “just the story of a milkman” and wanted to discard the original script. They suggested instead that it be made into a love story where Pasteur is portrayed as a student in love with the medical school dean’s daughter. They further suggested that at the end of the film a voiceover could announce, “And to this day, housewives all over the world are grateful to this man, because he invented pasteurized milk.” Paul Muni, who was playing the lead, objected so strenuously that the idea was scrapped and the original script was filmed. For his efforts, Muni won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1936.

JONAS SALK

• Jonas Salk was born in 1914 in New York City. After attending the New York University School of Medicine, he decided to go into medical research instead of becoming a physician. He accepted a job at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where his goal was to discover how many different types of polio virus existed. • At the time, polio was one of the worst public health problems in the U.S. It was especially tragic because most victims were children. Polio, first described in 1835, grew steadily more prominent as the years passed. The virus is transmitted by fecal matter, mucus, and saliva. Once in the body, it travels to the brain or spinal cord where it causes paralysis of varying degrees. • Polio didn’t receive national attention until 1921 when Franklin D. Roosevelt was struck down by the disease at the age of 39. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair because of it, and ended up founding the March of Dimes to help fund research for a vaccine.

It's almost time to celebrate spring and the 2015 growing season. Right now, we can use this transition time to get things in order. Here are a few tips to get you started. Tools and equipment Clean up tools. If shovels and other tools were put in the shed last fall without a good cleaning, get out the steel wool to remove rust and apply WD-40 to get them cleaned up for a fresh start. Sharpen the blade on the lawn mower and take the mower into the shop for a spring service. Update with ergonomic tools. Even before it's time to buy plants, take an early trip to the garden center and look for user-friendly tools that relieve the stress and strain on your body, especially your back. While gardening is a healthy activity, it's also one where countless small to serious injuries occur each season. This year, take steps to minimize the damage with tools that are bodyfriendly. Resist temptation Soon, many of the warehouse stores will have boxed bare root plants for sale that are too early for planting in Colorado and may not be the best selection of plants for our climate and growing conditions. Resist the temptation to purchase plants too early - and make sure that what you consider purchasing is suitable for local growing conditions. Know your zone The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map provides information to help gardeners and others select plants based on average low temperature range during the winter. Know your plant hardiness zone - and use it as a reference guide when considering new plants. Also be aware that the zone designations are an average guideline and not a guarantee that plants noted for your zone will always survive. A record-breaking low temperature more characteristic of another zone, for example, can damage or kill plants within their designated zone. Consult the zone map for guidance - but remember it's not a guarantee. Chris Dominy is the owner of Parker based BestYard.com and Weed Man Lawn Care. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel --* On April 2, 1863, responding to acute food shortages, hundreds of women riot in Richmond, Virginia, breaking windows and looting stores, before Confederate President Jefferson Davis threw his pocket change at them from the top of a wagon. Davis ordered the crowd to disperse or he would order the militia to fire on them. * On April 3, 1882, one of America’s most famous criminals, Jesse James, is shot to death by fellow gang member Bob Ford. Detective magazines had glamorized the James gang, turning them into Robin Hoods. In reality, Jesse James was a ruthless killer who stole only for himself. * On March 31, 1931, Knute Rockne, the legendary Notre Dame football coach, is killed in a plane crash. He was 43. From 1918 to 1930, Rockne compiled a record of 105 wins, 12 losses and 5 ties, and won six national championships. * On April 1, 1948, Soviet troops begin stopping U.S. and British military trains traveling through the Russian sector to and from Berlin. In June, the Soviets began a full-scale blockade of the U.S.-British-French sectors. Thus began the Berlin Blockade, when U.S. aircraft began dropping supplies into Berlin. * On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. is shot to death at a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. A single shot fired by James Earl Ray from more than 200 feet away struck King in the neck. The death of America’s leading civil-rights advocate sparked a wave of rioting in black communities around the country. * On April 5, 1976, Howard Hughes, one of the richest men to emerge from the American West, dies while flying from Acapulco to Houston for medical treatment. Hughes’ bizarre behavior grew worse in his final years, as he became obsessed with privacy and sometimes worked for days at a stretch in a black-curtained room without sleeping. * On March 30, 1980, a floating apartment platform for oil workers in the North Sea 235 miles east of Scotland collapses, killing 123 people. No one was expecting that a large wave would collapse and capsize the platform. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

“Take out the garbage!” was a command my mother shouted at me when I was a kid. Today I stuff much of it down the garbage disposal; hit the “on” switch for a few seconds and it all goes down the drain. The rest I wrap tightly in a Walmart grocery bag, place it in the garbage can out back, and once a week a big truck comes by and hauls it all away. Why take out the garbage? Because it is not worth keeping and I don’t want it to rot, stink and spoil everything else in my refrigerator. Oh that we would do the same thing for our minds: take out the garbage, and for the same reasons. Mind-garbage is any negative, nasty thought you need to take out of your mind. It is anything that is not worth keeping and anything that spoils everything else in your mind and heart. There are many kinds of garbage that find entrance into your mind; here are three that, if not taken out, will rot and spoil the rest of your life: The garbage of past failures, the garbage of blame, and the garbage of unforgiveness. There is nothing easier to recall than past failures. It is as if they are frequent billboards on the road of life that pop-up repeatedly to remind you of what an idiot you are. Here is one way to deal with the garbage of past failures: Turn every failure into a lesson. When you suddenly recall a past failure convert that thought of failure into a lesson for life. Say, “Yes, I made a mistake back then and the lesson I learned was… Now I am smarter, stronger and more successful than ever!” With one easy thought you “take out the garbage” and replace it with fresh thoughts of success. The garbage of blaming others for your situation is another way to stink up your mind. When you blame your parents, teachers, friends, boss, business partner, mate, the weather, the government or anything else for your misery, all progress ceases. Stop blaming others and take full responsibility for everything that happened in your past. You and only you are responsible for where you are today and where you will be tomorrow. You are powerless when you blame others but powerful when you accept personal responsibility. The garbage of unforgiveness can also rot your mind and stink up your future. When you harbor resentment for what someone has said or done to you in the past, you clog your brain with emotional garbage that hurts only you. Refuse to fantasize revenge, instead, forgive. Forgive everyone for anything they have done to you, everyone and anything without reservation whether they deserve it or not, and watch peace of mind, joy of heart and love of others make you a much happier and more successful person. Take out the garbage in your mind and STORE-UP THE GOOD instead. Your mind is a marvelous creation of God. He has designed it so you can determine what you think about. Think about good things, positive ideas, blessings and benefits instead of blunders and burdens. What you think about will determine the person you become. The writer James Allen said, “A person is limited only by the thoughts that he chooses.” Choose wisely.
