TIDBITS® EATS
ORANGES by Janet Spencer
“We’ve got you covered”
On February 16, 1957, the first ship to transport orange juice in stainless steel tanks left Port Canaveral, Florida. Come along with Tidbits as we appreciate oranges! ORANGE HISTORY • Most types of citrus originated in southeastern Asia and India. Many modern varieties were developed in China and Malaysia and transplanted across Asia and Europe.

• California used to be the top orange producing state, but Florida surpassed California in 1942 and now produces three times as many oranges as California. (The average difference in rainfall between Florida and California amounts to an extra 1,140,000 gallons per acre falling on Florida.) Floridians call them orange groves, but Californians call them orange orchards.

• Brazil is the world’s leading orange producer, with an output almost as high as that of the next three countries combined. Almost 99% of the fruit is processed for export. The United States is the second largest producer, followed by India, China, Mexico, and Spain. • The total weight of citrus fruit produced in the U.S. each year is greater than that of any other fruit tree in the U.S. • 98% of Florida oranges are harvested by hand. WORD ORIGINS • The Sanskrit word ‘naranga’ meaning ‘fragrant’ passed into French, where the word ‘or’ means ‘gold.’ From there it became ‘orange’ meaning ‘gold and fragrant. ’ • The Cedars of Lebanon had round, hard orangecolored cones (like pine cones), and the word for cedar was ‘citron.’ When a new fruit showed up that resembled them, it too was dubbed ‘citron.’ This is the origin of the word ‘citrus’ which actually means ‘cedar.’ • Tangerines are a variety of citrus which first appeared in Tangier, a city in Morocco. (A person from Tangier is also called a Tangerine.) Mandarin oranges originated in China, where they speak Mandarin. Clementines may be named after Father Clement Rodier who hybridized them in an orchard in Algeria.

ORANGE TREES • All citrus trees graft very easily so it’s easy to have oranges growing from a lemon rootstock, or lemons growing from an orange rootstock. In fact, a single citrus tree can have numerous grafts so that it bears lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, kumquats, and oranges all on the same tree at the same time. • During cold snaps, owners of orange groves will sometimes spray their trees with water in order to form ice. The trees will die if the temperature drops to 24F (-4C), but with a layer of ice, the temperature stays at 32F (0C) if the wind is calm and conditions are right. • The lifespan of a typical orange tree is about 40 years, but there’s one tree in Europe that was planted in 1421 that lived until the year 1894 and survived several transplants. Some trees in Florida are more than a century old. • Citrus trees are evergreen. An orange tree seedling doesn’t start to bear fruit until it’s about 15 years old. Grafting new shoots to old roots makes orange production much faster. FRUIT FACTS • You can’t pick an orange when it’s wet because moisture causes the skin to tighten which makes it very fragile. Orange picking has to wait until the dew dries in the morning and until after the sun has come out following rainstorms. • Oranges have a natural wax which protects the fruit from dehydration. During processing, the wax is washed off as the fruit is cleaned. Therefore, an artificial (and edible) wax is applied to the skin of the orange before it leaves the processing plant. Too much wax and the orange suffocates. Too little and it shrivels due to dehydration. • An orange will last about a month after being picked. An orange will not continue to ripen after it is picked. • Oranges that grow high on the tree are sweeter than those that grow on the lower branches. Oranges that grow on the outside branches are sweeter than those growing on inside branches. Oranges growing on the south side of the tree are sweeter than those on the north side of the tree. • The same is true about the amount of juice in an orange, and the amount of vitamin C it contains. Within a single orange, the blossom end will always be sweeter than the stem end. California oranges, where the climate is arid, have thicker skins than Florida oranges, where the climate is wet. • Green oranges are just as sweet as orange orangContinued on page 5

A virus is not a true living disease organism like a bacterium or fungus. It is a complex collection of genetic molecules, either Cindy Rose DNA or RNA, encased in a protein coating. A virus is made up of chemical sequences that reproduce themselves rapidly in an animal or plant and it can cause disease. Medical researchers ascribe the words – “a smart virus”, “ability to adapt”, “a killer bug” giving the virus almost human characteristics, whereas the biochemist will ascribe chemical reactions and base pairings as a laboratory experiment devoid of all living character. They are both right. A virus’s job is to make as many copies of itself as quickly as possible. Viruses enter the body and make large numbers of viral copies using the cat’s cells as a virus factory. Ultimately the infected cells burst, shedding large numbers of viral copies that infect other normal cells and then the process is repeated over and over again. Viral infections can spread throughout an animal’s body at a very rapid pace causing sickness or death. A cat with a healthy immune system or who has been vaccinated against a specific virus, can stop the invasion and remain virus free. Poor immunity will cause the cat to become ill and many individuals die.

The name sapphire is derived from the Greek meaning “blue”. The sapphire does have a deep rich blue that can vary all the way to a pale blue. It can also be found in almost every color in the spectrum including brown, orange, yellow, green indigo, violet, or mauve. Blue, however, is the most popular. So, when choosing a suitable sapphire, keep in mind the color you want. Which one you choose may depend on your skin tones, the type of jewelry you are wearing, and the particular fashion statement you wish to make. Also look at the quality of the stone. Examine it from all angles and ensure the color is even throughout the stone. Choose what YOU want, but most people choose blue. Why? Because sapphire blue symbolizes loyalty as in the term “true blue”. The blue can also give expression to love and longing as found in George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. And do you remember the name of the first computer that succeeded in defeating a world chess champion? It was “Deep Blue”. The price of a sapphire can also make you blue as top quality sapphires are extremely rare.

• A single orange provides about two-thirds of your daily requirement of vitamin C. GETTING GASSED • To change the color of a green orange, the fruit is placed in air-tight containers and then surrounded by ethylene gas for up to four days. Ethylene gas is a natural substance that is given off when fruits and vegetables ripen. The gas eliminates the chlorophyll in the skin, allowing the orange pigment to show through. This is the same process by which a green leaf turns orange in the fall as chlorophyll production tapers off with cold weather.

• The use of ethylene gas was first discovered when Californians noticed that oranges kept in a room where a kerosene stove was being used turned orange very quickly. At first they assumed it was the heat, so packinghouses began ‘ripening’ their oranges in heated rooms, which only served to dehydrate the fruit. Eventually it was discovered that it was the ethylene gas produced in the combustion of kerosene which was actually affecting the color of the oranges. JUICE

oranges are processed into juice. • The majority of California’s crop is sold as fresh fruit, whereas Florida’s oranges become juice products. • 53% of total global frozen concentrated orange juice production comes from Brazil. • Orange juice squeezed at home will begin to turn bitter within hours because it reacts with oxygen. Orange juice squeezed in a factory is pasteurized which helps prevent this. • When Citrus Hill decided to call their orange juice “Fresh Choice,” the FDA seized 2,000 cases because the label, reading “Citrus Hill Fresh Choice Orange Juice” led people to believe the juice was fresh when it was not. ORANGE JULIUS • In 1926 Julius Freed decided he wanted to open an orange juice stand in Los Angeles. Real estate broker Bill Hamlin helped him find a location for his stand downtown. Julius and Bill subsequently became friends. • Julius didn’t do badly, but he thought there was room for improvement. Bill had a sensitive stomach and the acid in the orange juice bothered him. Bill also happened to be a chemist, so be began experimenting with orange juice recipes. • One day he presented Julius with a recipe that mixed orange juice, ice, and milk in a blender for a creamier, smoother, more interesting drink than just plain orange juice. • When Julius began selling it, his income jumped, rising from an average of $20 a day ($266 in today’s money) to $100 a day ($1,333). Because people in line at his stand would call out, “Give me an orange, Julius!” he named the new drink after himself:

Protecting plants from heavy snow The heavy snowfall predicted this weekend is a reminder that we're heading into the season of heavy spring snows when plants may need extra TLC from their human caretakers. Deep snowfalls - especially the ones during spring that tend to be heavier and wetter than powdery winter snows - can break tree limbs, smother and crush ornamental grasses and splay upright evergreens. Deep temperature dives below freezing may also mean applying ice melt to keep walks safe.

Imagine... NO MORE MONTHLY MONITORING FEES!!!
Here are a few things to keep in mind as we head into this snowy weekend. During the storm: Keep an eye on snow accumulating on trees - on both deciduous and evergreens. If branches are sagging under the weight, use something long such as a broom handle to gently shake snow off the branches as high as you can reach. Start at the lowest part of the tree rather than at the top. If you start dusting snow off the top, it will add even more weight onto the lower branches. Starting at the bottom of the tree helps to keep those lowest branches from being overloaded to the breaking point. If you have trees that are already leaning - or branches that are at a sharp "V" with one already growing more to the side than upright - avoid standing or putting property under them. These may be signs of a tree that could fall over or a branch that could break under heavy snow. Cottonwood trees, for example, are often susceptible to breakage. Branches of columnar, upright evergreens can spread apart under heavy snow. Shaking snow off these evergreens can help minimize the damage. After the storm: Inspect trees for broken branches or "hangers." These are broken branches that seem to be hanging on by a thread. Line up an expert to cut the branches properly to avoid insect or disease problems in these wounds later on. For upright evergreens that have splayed, check at a garden center for material that can be wrapped around the branches to restore their upright shape. If ornamental grasses have been crushed, they won't bounce back. Plan a time when the weather is warm to cut grasses back. This needs to be done in the springtime anyway before new shoots emerge. If your grasses survived until now, congratulations! Icemelt During the storm, try to use the minimum amount of product needed to get the job done as ice melt can be harmful to plants. After using an ice melt product on walks or drives, try not to sweep water from melted ice into lawn or bed areas. Let the water evaporate, if possible. When the area is dry, sweep up any remaining product and dispose of it. These precautions will lessen the buildup of damaging salts in the soil. Be productive. Take advantage of a snowy weekend to hunker down and peruse seed catalogs or online offerings for spring and summer planting ideas.

Once you return home from a hospital, the last thing you want to happen is a probelm causing readmission. If you do experience trouble it’s usually within the first 72 hours to 7 days after being released from a medical setting. To prevent a readmission, be educated, know your condition and the agencies involced in your recovery. First, know your diagnosis, its symptoms, and compli-
cations. If you’re dealing with congestive heart failure and you notice weight gaoin, don’t assume it’s because you’ve missed your daily walkl for the past week. Contact your physician or home health agency as soon as you see a change. This can stop symptoms from worsening. Second, keep a list handy of the agencies involved in your treatment: physicians, skilled nursing facility, and the home health agency. These agencies can work together to create a plan. A home health agency can increase their hours or can work with your skilled nursing facility to readmit directly and avoid the hospital all together. Let’s keep in mind not all hospital readmissions can, or should, be avoided but it’s important to know the tools you have at your disposal and how to use them.

Boutique Chic How to Be Fashionable • Read fashion magazines like: Vogue, Kiss, Elle and Glamour. • Know what's "in". For example, skinny jeans go in and out of fashion periodically. The key to being fashionable is timing. • Know some fashion rules. These rules generally persist despite trends. If you look bad in skinny jeans, for example, you'll still look bad in them no matter how trendy they are at the moment. Pederson - Lead Stylist at Bonnie • Shop at high fashion shops & boutiques, like Bonne’ Erica Bella Boutique Bella. They will always be following the fashion trends and have the newest, most unique items. • Buy high quality and versatile clothes you will wear at every occasion, instead of buying cheap items you will never wear. Try buying hand bags or accessories that are expensive, but can last for years, even decades. • Try to search online for the newest fashion. Read fashion blogs. Personally, we LOVE Pinterest! Need more advice? Come to the store and see us! Erica Pedersen is the lead stylist for Bonne’Bella Boutique. It is “Parker’s most Unique Boutique. 3.2 Protect Your Mind from Depravity Do you watch those mystery documentaries where they take a crime and re-live it, then follow through to the capturing of the perpetrator, his/her trial and ultimate incarceration? We do. One especially gory episode we started to watch featured a variety of hideous acts that led to the brutal deaths of a whole family. Before the story got too far along I grabbed the remote control and shot it toward the TV with great vigor, pressing the OFF button. I turned to my wife, “I don’t think we need that kind of depravity to be described to us. It is polluting our minds and ruining our evening.” She agreed. The television is only one of a variety of convenient ways to pollute your mind these days. You can turn on some popular music. The lyrics of some popular songs are so vulgar they shock even the most liberal minded listeners. The “singers” glorify rape, murder, incest, homosexuality, bestiality and other perversions all in the name of art or freedom of speech or some other excuse to spread their polluting message. You can watch pornography. It is easily accessible in print, video and on the internet. Sometimes it pops up in front of you uninvited. Recently I was searching on the internet for some humor and came across a website that had cute little riddles, the kind children enjoy. As I scrolled through the pages some vile and explicit pornographic images appeared that had nothing to do with the riddles. There is a word for this kind of nasty mind withering wickedness: depravity. Now there is a word you don’t hear often these days. Depravity refers to the moral corruption of the heart and mind. If you would like a simpler definition, use the Bible one: sin. I know that people don’t like talking about sin, but I will because it has a particularly destructive impact on your mind. Who can protect you from such pollution? There is only one person who can defend you against the debilitating impact of depraved ideas, images, actions and words; that person is YOU. You are singularly responsible for what you allow into your mind whether via your eyes or ears or out of your mouth via your tongue. In a world so smudged with depravity, how do you keep your mind from being polluted? The defense I propose: Stay in the Light. When your thoughts become perverted or evil, only you can change them to virtue and decency. When ideas (plot lines, humor, song lyrics, discussions, etc.) become immoral or depraved, only you can opt out and refocus your mind on goodness and propriety. When you are tempted by smut and tawdry media, only you can hit the off button on the computer or TV and turn on clean, uplifting and life-giving messages. When nasty obscene words began their journey from your heart to the ears of those around you, only you can choke them back. Only you can replace depravity with goodness, maliciousness with kindness and the repulsive with the respectable. Only you. ©2015 Ronald D. Ross

NATURAL HORMONE BALANCING Step 1: TEST THE HORMONE LEVELS WITH A SIMPLE SALIVA HOME COLLECTION KIT
Interesting Facts If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.) The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!) A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (O.M.G.!!!) Is that why they are always squealing? A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy) (I'm still not over the pig.) Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour. (Don't try this at home;maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off. (Honey, I'm home . What the...?)

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field. (30 minutes. Lucky pig! Can you imagine?) The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?) Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still can't believe that pig ...quality over quantity.) Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.) The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (Hmmmmmm.......) Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?) Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (Okay, so that would be a good thing.) A cat's urine glows under a black light. (I wonder how much the government paid to figure that out.) An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.)
