• When Roosevelt and Churchill were scheduled to meet in 1943, they knew the Germans were desperate to find out where the meeting would be. News was leaked that it would be at the place identified in code as Casablanca. The Germans figured that since “casablanca” was Spanish for white house, the meeting would take place at the White House. They sent all their spies to monitor the White House while Roosevelt and Churchill had an uneventful meeting in Casablanca, Morocco. • On December 6, 1941, President Roosevelt sent a message to Emperor Hirohito in Japan pleading for peace. He sent the message by telegraph in a simple code used for every-day transmissions. In Japan, the telegram sat for ten hours unread due to a backlog of messages. Had he sent the message in a top security code, it would have reached the Emperor immediately. But it did not— and the next day, Pearl Harbor was attacked.

• Actress Lucille Ball reported that every time she walked near a certain area, she heard Japanese radio broadcasts coming across some lead fillings in her teeth. An investigation revealed a Japanese radio station hidden underground. • On December 6, 1941, Japan was preparing to mount an attack on Pearl Harbor. A Japanese spy in Pearl Harbor walked right up to the telegraph office in town and sent a dispatch to his confederates describing where the warships were located. The telegram cost $6.82 and apparently nobody in the telegraph office thought it was suspicious. • On Dec. 6, 1941, a new employee at the Office of Naval Intelligence, Mrs. Dorothy Edgers (who had been employed there only a month), decoded an intercepted Japanese message that indicated Honolulu was to be the target of a Japanese attack. She showed it to her superior officer, who said it needed more work and could wait until Monday.

• In May of 1942, the Japanese were preparing to mount a major attack somewhere in the Central Pacific. The U.S. had broken the Japanese code and were aware of the impending attack. However, they didn’t know what the target would be. The Japanese called the target “AF” and the Americans could not figure out what place that denoted. Then they came up with a scheme: they had Midway send an uncoded message saying their water distillation plant had broken down and they were short on drinking water. Then they monitored the Japanese transmissions. Two days later, they intercepted a coded message from Japan reporting that “AF” was short of drinking water. When the Japanese descended on Midway, the American forces were ready and waiting. • When agents stormed the Japanese embassy in Portugal, they seized a Japanese code book, thinking it would be helpful to the Allies. What they didn’t know was that the Allies had already broken the code. Now that Japan knew the code book had been stolen, they changed the code. It took a year before the U.S. could break the new code. • When American decoding experts intercepted and deciphered a message from Germany to Mexico, they found that Germany was offering Mexico a large chunk of the United States if only Mexico would join with them in the war. This message was pivotal in pushing the U.S. into World War I. • Zeppelin L-49 was returning to Germany during World War I after having bombed London. It was over France when it ran out of fuel. Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

Is Vomiting Normal in Cats? A question was asked by a group of feline veterinarians four years ago: Is Vomiting Normal in Cats? My response was if there is a specific reason for vomiting it may be a normal reject response but if vomiting occurs more than twice a month it is abnormal. One colleague said that cats vomit regularly and as a species they are ‘vomiters’. Others were not quite sure how to answer because no one had asked this question and/or had gotten a specific answer. A group of clinical research veterinarians set out this year to find out if periodic chronic vomiting had specific causes or as it is commonly thought, chronic vomiting is commonly caused by hairballs and diet. A clinical investigation was planned to find answers to the problem(s). Cats that vomited more than twice a month were included in this study. A thorough history including diets, snacks and grooming habits were noted; physical examination; routine blood chemistries/urinalysis; abdominal ultrasound with measurements; and exploratory surgery with multiple biospies: of the liver, pancreas, 3-4 areas of the small intestine and any other tissue that appeared abnormal were performed. The pathologist did routine histopathology and studies with immunohistopathy to identify cell type. The age range of the vomiting patients was 2 to 18 years old. After 100 patients were studied there was one normal cat, 3 cats had eosinophilic gastroenteritis, 57 had gi lymphoma (cancer), and 39 cats had inflammatory bowel disease. The results of the study showed that prolonged vomiting truly had underlying causes other than hairballs and diet – this was totally unexpected. Vomiting cats need further workups as to the cause of the chronic vomiting. The good news is that the majority of these patients respond well to nutritional therapy, probiotic therapy and medications that are directed towards the specific cause of the problem.

dirty jobs done dirt cheap

Jasper is composed of chalcedony, microcrystalline quartz and other minerals that combine to create colorful bands and patterns. The large variety of jasper patterns are Scott McQueen used to give the stones their various names. The most popular is landscape jasper so named because of the tiny landscape panoramas that appear thereon. Picture jaspers exhibit combinations of patterns (such as banding from flow or depositional patterns caused by water or wind), and color variations the look like scenes or images on a cut section. There is also orbicular (circular) jasper, and ribbon jasper. See the variety in the stones shown above. Jasper is found in many countries and used often as architectural adornments on buildings. Perhaps that is because the new Jerusalem descending from heaven is described as follows: "It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal." Revelation 21:11. At least three states have cities named after this stone: Alabama, Indiiana, and Texas.

Replacing a Leaky Dishwasher Hose Q: After several days, I finally located the source of a mysterious leak along the inside wall of my basement. The flexible drain pipe from the back of my dishwasher cracked, so that water pours down the kitchen wall behind the cabinet. My dishwasher is pretty old, and I’m not sure I can find a replacement part. Should I just buy a new appliance? -- Bart C., Villa Rica, Ga.

A: Chances are, you’ll be able to find a similar-size replacement at your home-improvement store. And you can always check with the manufacturer, either through a phone call or via its website, to see if the part is still available. At any rate, you don’t want the flooding to continue. Unplug the dishwasher (or turn off power at the circuit panel if there is no standard outlet) and gently slide it out of its cabinet so that you can access the hose. Disconnect the hose from the appliance and from the sink trap or garbage disposal, depending on how it was installed. Take the hose to the home-improvement store to find a comparable size and length. (Don’t purchase a shorter length, by the way. The hose needs to be set up so that its middle part is higher than the inlet/outlet connections.) Connect the new hose, first to the sink trap or garbage disposal, then to the dishwasher outlet. Plug the dishwasher back in (or turn on the circuit). Place a piece of plastic along the floor under the outlet and under the sink trap connection, then run the dishwasher empty for a full cycle and monitor for leaks from the connections. If you detect any, adjust the connections until the leak stops. Once the leak is fixed, take a close look at the floor and wall behind the dishwasher as well as the basement ceiling, and note the location and extent of water damage. Damp drywall and flooring may dry without issues, but materials that get repeatedly soaked can develop a mold problem. If you detect mold, the affected drywall or ceiling should be cut out and replaced; flooring may not need replacement, but does need to be treated to remove mold. HOME TIP: Avoid cleaning a dishwasher’s interior with bleach or products containing bleach, as it could break down seals and other components.

SECRET CODES (continued): Germany. The captain, knowing they were doomed to be captured, knew it was essential to get rid of the code books. But he couldn’t burn the books because the zeppelin was filled with flammable gas. So he ordered his men to shred the books and toss the pieces of paper over the side. When they were captured, Colonel Richard Williams of the U.S. Army Intelligence was frustrated when he found that the code books had been destroyed. So he sent the troops out to search the ground following the path the airship had taken. By nightfall they had collected 22 sacks full of tiny scraps of paper. Williams set his men to the task of reconstructing the book. By midnight they had put together a complete map of the North Sea showing the call sign positions for a U-boat rendezvous. • William and Elizabeth Friedman were a married team of cryptanalysts who were instrumental in cracking many codes. Once the British sent them some sample messages from a new encoding device they were considering using throughout the British Army. Within three hours of receiving the five messages, the Friedmans had deciphered them. The first message, ironically enough, said, “This cipher is absolutely indecipherable.” • A captured slave was brought to General Lysander, leader of the Spartan forces around 400 B.C. A message the slave was carrying was handed to the General. There were many hostilities going on, so Lysander suspected the message would bear important information. However, it did not. Then he noticed the slave’s belt was decorated with a series of letters that made no sense. He took the belt and wrapped it around a thin rod. There, down the side of the rod, was a perfectly legible message. It said that

the Persians— who were supposed to be allies of the Spartans— were planning to take over. Thus forewarned, Lysander rushed his forces back to Sparta and ruined the plot. • Around 300 B.C. Histiaeos was the governor of the ancient Greek city Miletus. He was being held under guard and couldn’t get any messages out— but it was imperative that he inform his people behind enemy lines that he planned to overthrow Darius, the king of Persia. He shaved the head of his servant and tattooed the message on his scalp. After the hair grew back, he sent the servant out on an errand. The message was delivered. • During the Revolutionary War, messages were sent via Anna Strong’s clothesline. She signaled an American spy whenever a boatman was ready to carry secret messages across Long Island Sound. A black petticoat hung out to dry meant that the boatman was waiting. The number of hankies next to it indicated which cove he was hiding in. • Paul Bernard was a French spy in World War I who sent his secret messages home by writing the essential information in the top right-hand corner of postcards, and then putting postage stamps over the writing.

I’m a typical father and husband, age 49, that finds my insurance costs continually rising. We are a healthy family that goes to our Dr. for annual physicals and maybe a few visits for other reasons. I’ve found that if I were to pay for these visits out of my own pocket, it might run me $1,000 per year. So I ask myself why am I paying $7,800 per year in health insurance premiums that I never use? Yeah, I know, I know, what if something catastrophic were to happen? Does that justify the huge expense?

My long term care policy is a good one. A+ rated company, $3,600 monthly benefit, inflation rider, all the components necessary to keep my wife or me in our home should we ever need nursing assistance. I’m paying over $320 per month for this insurance. What if I pay for this for 10+ years, never use it and pass away. Will my wife see any benefit? Am I just tossing my dough down the drain? My wife and I each have a $500,000, 20 year level term, life insurance policy. I pay $70 per month and she pays $50 per month. If one of us dies, the other will get the death benefit tax free. That’s great, but can we use this policy while we are still alive? Nope! They call this “life” insurance, but I think it is “death insurance”. Nice idea, but only pays upon death.

Man, insurance sucks! That’s a lot of money each month going to insurance companies! Add in our auto and homeowners, not to mention business insurance, and that’s a decent mortgage payment each month. Need to find a way to cut these expenses! Guess what? I found a way! I recently came across a new product, called a “combination” policy. This policy, underwritten by an A+ rated carrier, combines life insurance, long term care insurance, critical care (heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc...)insurance and terminal care insurance. Go figure, a life insurance plan you can use while you’re still alive and it doesn’t cost you a fortune! All in one policy for one low monthly premium. It’s about time somebody came up with this! Help Your Children Avoid Student Debt Burden It’s not so easy being a college kid these days. The job market for recent graduates has been shaky while, at the same time, students are leaving school with more debt than ever before. If you have children who will someday be attending college, should you be worried?

Cindy Rose Project on Student Debt.

Quality Service on all Foreign and Domestic Vehicles “Your Hometown Service Center” 303-841-8000

You might indeed have cause for concern. Americans now owe more on student loans than on credit cards, according to the Federal Bank of New York, the U.S. Department of Education and other sources. For the college class of 2011, the most recent year for which figures are available, the average student loan debt was about $26,500, according to the Institute for College Access and Success’s

This type of debt load, coupled with the struggles to find a wellpaying job commensurate with their education, is causing many recent graduates to get off on the wrong foot in terms of developing savings and investment strategies that could help them throughout their lives.

So, what can you do? If you want to help your kids pay for college, you may want to consider a 529 plan. When you invest in a 529 plan, all withdrawals will be free from federal income taxes, as long as the money is used for qualified college expenses. (However, non-qualified withdrawals may be subject to ordinary income tax plus a 10% penalty on the earnings portion.) Contribution limits are high, and, contributions may be eligible for a tax deduction or credit for residents in certain states. A 529 plan, while valuable, is not the only college savings vehicle available. You may also want to consider a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. However, a Coverdell account’s contribution limits are much lower than those of a 529 plan. You could also establish a custodial account, known as an UGMA or UTMA, which offers some tax benefits and no contribution limits.

After

Nonetheless, while these vehicles may help you save and invest for college, they may also divert resources that you might have used for other financial goals — such as a comfortable retirement. Of course, it’s not an “either-or” situation — there’s nothing stopping you from contributing to a 529 plan, Coverdell account or custodial account along with your 401(k) and IRA. Clearly, though, it will take discipline and perseverance on your part to save and invest for both your children’s education and your own retirement. Like everyone else, you don’t have unlimited resources. But you do have another ally — time. The earlier you begin investing for education and retirement, the greater your chances of achieving your goals in these areas. And by understanding how your goals interact, you can work to make sure you don't inadvertently derail one when saving for another. Avoiding the student loan “debt trap” while still making progress toward your retirement savings will require creative thinking — and both you and your children may have to make some sacrifices along the way. But the ultimate goals — a college degree that isn’t one big IOU and a comfortable retirement — are worth the effort. This is the question many home owners and renters are asking. If you are a renter wanting to buy your own home, this is one of the best times in several years to buy. Home prices are still a bargain, and interest rates are still very low. However, home prices are going up at a steady rate. The Denver market is up over 7%-8% since the same time last year. While we are happy to see some recovery, there is another side of the coin to look at and that is interest rates. Several lenders have told me they expect interest rates to rise in the near future. If you are considering purchasing a home, don’t waste your time looking before you get prequalified for a loan. There is a shortage of homes for sale in the average price range of $275,000 to $325,000. What that means is that good homes priced right are often only on the market for a few days to a few weeks and many sellers are getting multiple offers. You could see your dream home sold out from under you by a buyer that is already pre-qualified for a loan. So what do you do? First, contact a real estate broker who can put you in contact with a couple of good mortgage lenders and get prequalified. They will show you the loan amount you qualify for. Now you are ready to start looking so when you find your dream home, you won’t lose out to another buyer. Please see our ad on page 12 of Tidbits Thomas Waggoner 720-837-6687
