COFFEE

by Janet Spencer

On November 29, 1942, coffee become one of the items rationed due to war time shortages. It remained rationed until June of 1947. Come along with Tidbits as we drink coffee!

RATIONS

Holiday Holiday Lighting! Lighting!

• Coffee wasn’t in short supply when it was rationed. In fact, there was record coffee production in Latin American countries at the time. However, the growing demand for coffee from both military and civilian sources, and the demands placed on shipping, which was needed for other purposes, required rationing. Shortages were rarely the reason for rationing during the war. Rationing was generally employed either to guarantee fair distribution of resources and foodstuffs to all citizens or to give priority to military use for certain materials. About one-third of all food commonly consumed by civilians was rationed at one time or another during the war, including butter, sugar, milk, and gasoline.

Tidbits® of Douglas & Elbert Counties CAFFEINE

• Caffeine is found naturally not only in coffee and tea but also in about 100 other plants. Caffeine acts as a natural insecticide. It can kill insects, stunt their growth, impair their coordination, or ruin their reproduction capabilities. • A typical cup of drip-brewed coffee contains about 115 mg of caffeine. The same size cup of espresso delivers about 250 mg of caffeine. That’s why espresso is served in such tiny cups. Percolated coffee has slightly less caffeine than drip coffee. Decaffeinated coffee does not mean the coffee is caffeine-free. Brewed decaf has about 5 mg of caffeine. A typical cup of truck stop coffee will usually contain more caffeine than an expensive cup of designer coffee. That’s because the less expensive robusta beans from which inexpensive coffee is made are higher in caffeine than the more expensive arabica beans used in specialty coffee. • Methylene chloride is the chemical used to remove caffeine from coffee beans. The chemical is poisonous when inhaled, but because it evaporates at 120°f (49°C), it dissipates when the beans are roasted at 400°f. (204°C). Any remnants still in the beans are rendered harmless by brewing the coffee at a temperature around 200°f. (93°C) • Coffee increases alertness and enhances performance on certain tasks. Tests on drivers and typists prove that two cups of coffee can help. However, research shows it helps most if the drinker is bored or fatigued. It only boosts intellectual speed and not physical power. Furthermore, coffee seems to help extroverts more than it helps introverts. Studies show that people respond more to the caffeine they think they’ve consumed more than they respond to the amount of caffeine that they’ve actually consumed.

• Those who regularly drink alcohol are 20% less likely to develop cirrhosis of the liver if they drink at least one cup of coffee per day. • People who consume caffeine are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, and for those who have already developed Parkinson’s, it may help them control their movement. • Drinking two to four cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of suicide by about 50%. The theoretical reason is because coffee acts as a mild antidepressant by aiding in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.

While fruits and vegetables also have tons of antioxidants, the human body seems to absorb the most from coffee.

When a Cough is a ‘True’ Cough in a Cat Cats vomit, retch, gag, sneeze, have nasal congestion, trouble breathing, reverse sneeze but rarely do they have a ‘true’ cough. Upper respiratory infections are the most common respiratory signs seen: showing eye discharge, nasal discharge, mouth ulcers, open mouth breathing, decreased appetite and fever. Vomiting and retching related to diet/gastrointestinal illness can be confused with respiratory problems. Mixed signs are common so cats may show many different clinical presentations. The top two causes of cough in Colorado are Asthma/ Bronchitis Complex and Heartworm Disease. Asthma/Bronchitis Complex is an allergic lung disease that causes constriction of the bronchial tree. Diagnosis in the cat is made by clinical exam, chest x-rays, tracheal wash/cytology and response to therapy. Coughing is the primary clinical sign followed by an expiratory dyspnea, crackles and wheezing. Secondary cigarette smoke is commonly noted in the history of asthmatic patients. Heartworm Disease is on the rise in Colorado. The dog and the coyote are the reservoir for the infection. The mosquito bites an infected dog/coyote; the mosquito becomes infected; and then it bites another animal (dog, cat, bear, etc.); and the infective larva develops in the host animal; and finally the larva develops into an adult heartworm. Cats usually only have 1-3 worms living in the heart or the vessels of the lung. Diagnosis is made with a combination of blood tests, clinical signs, chest radiographs and chest ultrasounds. Even with this small number of worms many cats to die suddenly. There is no effective treatment once the worms are present except supportive care and the control of secondary sideeffects due to the disease. Prevention is the only way to protect your cat from heartworm disease! Other less common causes of cough in the cat are: heart disease (uncommon), tracheobronchial collapse (rare), grass awns/foreign bodies/fumes/smoke (can be seen), cancer (can be seen), infectious (less common), immune (can be seen) and laryngitis (less common).

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about fire opals is the size of the raw stones. Some are as large as a baseball, which increases the variety of ways they can be utilized. Their color is also distinctive. Fire opals have a warm, expressive orange color that varies from yellow to light red, and from time to time, a slight tinge of brown. They can also have a flashy play of color, something typical of opals. The price of a fire opal is determined by three factors: the play of color, the body color and the level of transparency. The more transparency and 'fire' it has, and the more intense the deep red of its body color, the more valuable it will be. Mexico provides gem collectors with the highest valued fire opals; they yield up intense red-orange fire opals that have a robust play of color. So popular is the fire opal in Mexico that it has become their national gemstone. Fire opals are said to appeal to people who are active and who bear a positive approach to life. Perhaps it is their fiery color that helps their owners experience the beauty of life and discover joyfulness in daily living.

Fall is a great time to plant perennials

It may be only months, but it feels like an eternity 'til we see the peonies bloom again. That's a sad thought for many, but the good news is that we can use the nice weekend ahead to get perennials off to a good start in next year's growing season. Fall is one of the best times to plant new and divide existing perennials - peonies, daylilies, Echinacea and all the rest. Soil conditions in the fall are usually better for digging than in the spring. Now, there's no dodging the frequent late-season snows and the muddy conditions they produce.

WHOLE HOUSE SPECIAL! $425 up to 16 windows

Divide and conquer If you have perennials that have been in place 4-6 years or are overgrowing their space, separate them with a shove into two or more plants. This process rejuvenates the plants and also yields more plants to enjoy in other areas of your yard. All perennials benefit from this process and especially, ornamental grasses that sometimes appear to die out in the center. Clean up the soil Make sure the bed area where you add new or divided plants has been cleaned up of weed debris. Remove perennial weed roots, encroaching turf grass and old debris that may have seeds. The cleaner the bed, the fewer weed issues you will have next season. Amend the soil If you are planting an entire bed of perennials, prep the entire area with organic matter such as compost, well-rotted manure or peat moss that is at least 6 inches deep. Dig holes that are 2-3 times the size of the root ball of the plant and plant with amended soil. The organic matter helps roots to become established and grow. Group plants according to their water needs to avoid overwatering some and under-watering others. Post planting steps Water plants after planting - and be prepared to check soil moisture throughout the fall and winter. Even though plants are dormant, they can still dry out and require water. Mulch around plants with an organic mulch such as shredded bark. This will help moderate the soil temperature and retain moisture throughout the winter. Fertilize with a root-developing fertilizer. Next spring, you'll enjoy the results of these late-seasoning gardening chores. Our plants always make us glad we made the effort.

Fall planting also gets the plants feeling at home in their new digs so the roots take hold and start growing. By springtime, the plants will be better established and may offer up more first-season blooms than if you wait until spring to plant them. Here are some tips to for giving perennials a head start on the next growing season.

Ask the Dentist

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry

Halloween’s OVER, I’ve Thrown Out All That Candy – Now What? Q. Just like you said, I’ve been brushing my child’s teeth three times a day – for 2 (TWENTY) minutes. How long should I keep up that “60 minutes per day” tooth brushing routine? Cindy Rose A. Did I really say “Brush for 20 minutes, three times a day” ? Oops! I checked, and I did say that – and found that “typo” in the last two Tidbits. (Unlike USA’s national debt, that one little extra “zero” probably will make a big difference in compliance!) Here’s the correction - without the extra “zero”: Brush two times daily for 2 MINUTES (and floss just the teeth you want to keep). All of you parents who have been brushing your child’s teeth 20 minutes, three times a Day, or making sure they do, deserve the “Congressional Medal of Honor for Parenting”! Q. Where can I get great information on how to keep my child’s teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime (besides right here in Tidbits, of course) ? A. There’s a great new website recently launched by a coalition of 35 prominent dental organizations, known as the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives. It is the first-ever joint children’s oral health campaign with the Ad Council. Media Partners for the Campaign include Sesame Street, Dream Works, Cartoon Network (This is going to be BIG.) Dr. Joe Blaes, editor of Dental Economics Magazine, states: “The new campaign will teach parents and caregivers….. as well as children about oral health and the simple ways they can prevent oral disease….fewer than half of parents (44%) report that their children brush their teeth twice a day. While most parents understand the importance oral health and their children brushing their teeth, they are not aware of the serious consequences of not taking care of their children’s teeth.”

Joint Replacements: Raise Your Chance for Successful Recovery by Rosette Subia As people are staying fit and active into their later years, we push our tendons, muscles, and joints harder and longer. We fail to realize they simply begin to wear out, continuing to put them under enormous strain. Eventually we feel the results of pain or injury. Surgery to improve these impairments are becoming more common. Hip and knee replacements are performed most often. Surgery comes with risks, ranging from infection to poor recovery and outcome. However, there are strategies before surgery which could promote positive results (AARP, June 13, 2012). First, consider "pre-hab" before your surgery. This means seeing a physical therapist weeks before the surgery to strengthen your body. Think about seeing the same physical therapist for your post surgery rehabilitation. They will know your functional level before surgery, which should help you with recovery. Next, devote yourself to a rehabilitation program. A rehabilitation program could include a few days of therapy in the hospital, a few weeks in a rehabilitation facility and possibly outpatient services. A commitment to rehabilitation is essential to return your body and life back to the activity level you enjoy.
