Where did that come from? Ever wonder how some of your favorite foods came to be? Tidbits takes a look at some fun food facts. • According to legend, a Jewish baker in 1683 baked the first bagel. This stirrup-shaped yeast dough was made to honor Jan Sobieski, a renowned horseman and the King of Poland, for saving the people of Austria from Turkish invaders. The baker named the hard roll beugel, the Austrian word for stirrup. The roll soon became a hit throughout Eastern Europe, and over time its shape and name evolved into the modern-day bagel. What would the bagel be without cream cheese? In 1872, William Lawrence of Chester, N.Y., an American cheese maker, was experimenting with a recipe for Neufchâtel, a soft French cheese. He didn’t get it quite right, but what was produced was a much softer, silkier cheese. The cheese maker realized that this new cheese was better suited as a spreadable cheese designed to be consumed fresh. It didn’t need to be molded and aged in the Neufchâtel style. He wrapped it in foil, and it was trademarked as Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese in 1880.

Food Fun (continued): • Have you had your Wheaties today? In the 1920s, a Minneapolis health-spa owner made homemade bran gruel to feed his clients. The mixture helped keep them regular and helped them lose weight. One day, he dropped some on the stove, and it hardened into a crust. After tasting it, he liked it better than what was cooking in the pot. He made a sample batch to show a friend at the Washburn Crosby Company, which later became the General Mills Company. The original mixture was too crumbly, so they came up with a better flake using wheat. Jane Bausman, the wife of a company executive, thought up the name Wheaties. • Don’t skip your Wheaties! A study of 19,000 Americans found that people who skipped breakfast are more likely to gain weight because they tend to overcompensate for the loss of key nutrients at breakfast by eating more fat-rich, highenergy foods later in the day. • The oldest piece of chewing gum is 9,000 years old, but it was in 1906 that the first “bubble gum” was invented by Frank Fleer. His first batch produced a gum so sticky that if it got on your skin the only way to get it off was with vigorous scrubbing and turpentine. His recipe was finally perfected 22 years later by Walter Diemer in 1928. The 23-year-old Diemer was an accountant for Fleer Chewing Gum Company who experimented with new gum recipes in his spare time. His first commercial batch of Dubble Bubble Gum just happened to be pink because that was the only food coloring on the shelf that day. Fleer’s gum became the most popular penny candy on the market. • In 1912, a Cleveland chocolate candy maker named Clarence Crane wanted to make a hard mint that wouldn’t melt in the summer heat to boost summertime sales. While at the pharmacy buying bottled flavoring, he noticed the druggist using a hand operated pill-making machine that produced flat, round pills. He contracted with the pharmacy to press the mints into shape. The machinery malfunctioned and stamped the candy with a hole in the middle. After looking at the shape, it reminded him of a life preserver so he called them Lifesavers. • Did you know ketchup didn’t always contain tomatoes? The Chinese invented it in the 1600s, and this mixture had no tomatoes but a lot of pickled fish and spices. In the early 1700s, British explorers encountered the sauce in Malaysia. By 1740, it was a British staple and was then renamed ketchup. Tomatoes became an ingredient in the late 1700s when New England colonists added them to the mixture, and modern-day ketchup was born. Tomatoes may have been added sooner, but Continued on page 7

Cat Q & A

Mosquitoes Bring Heartworm Season –

Prevention is Key! Cats and dogs can be infected with heartworm disease by the bite from a carrier mosquito. The coyote has become the ‘natural’ reservoir for the disease. Dogs are the primary host for the disease, but cats and other animals can become infected, and the consequences are serious. Indoor cats are just as susceptible as outdoor cats! The good news is that this disease can be prevented. There is no effective treatment once your cat is infected, so prevention is the key. A safe, monthly topical medication is the best way to protect your cat(s). If you have questions please call our hospital.

Pet of the Week

A Mobile Veterinarian

In 1996 the American Board of Veterinary Practice (ABVP) first recognized the Feline Specialty as a distinct specialty area. Currently there are 84 feline specialists in the United States and Canada. A long, rigorous certification process is required to become a species specialist – practice requirements, continuing education, indepth case studies, a three part written and practical examination. The passion and persistence to improve professional skills is the reason to become board certified in a feline specialty. Foremost, feline practitioners must love cats and they are driven to elevate the medical/surgical care of cats. Dr. James Olson, DVM, DABVP (Feline Specialty) has been recognized for a chapter written in the new edition of THE FELINE PATIENT - 2011, Breed Specific Diseases. The chapter catalogs current diseases that affect feline breeds and the new laboratory and genetic tests that have been developed to identify them. Dr. Olson has also written a chapter on Hyperthyroidism in FELINE MEDICAL SECRETS that details the hyperthyroid disease syndrome and treatment. Hyperthyroidism is the number one endrocrine disease affecting cats. Dr. Olson was one of the pioneers who develped the radio-iodine treatment model with a three day release after treatment. This has become a the standard for new I-131 facilities in the United States and Canada. Others areas of interest are the study and treatment of resistant urinary tract infections, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiomyopathy and kidney disease. In the pasts, dogs have received most of the money and research efforts, but currently the feline specialists and feline directed research groups (The Cornell Feline Health Center, The Morris Animal Foundation and The Winn Foundation) are directing major feline research efforts. Cats are the number one pet in the United States and they are becoming the healthiest pet in the country. Cat Specialist and Drs. James and (daughter) Jennifer Olson are among the few veterinarians in the country to have a feline specialty practice that tries to make a difference in cat care. Cat Specialist hosts fellow practitioners, student externs and technicians to further feline health concerns. We love cats! Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. A MOBLIE VETERINARIAN When It’s Time To Say Goodbye

One of the hardest decisions to make as a pet owner is when it is time to say goodbye to a beloved pet. One of the biggest questions that we get is “How do you know when it’s time?” There is no good answer to this question. Our pets do give us signals when it is time. One key sign is when the pet stops eating. Another is when they stop doing an activity that they would have died to preform. We lost one of our dogs, Ginger, almost two years ago. She started having troubles walking Claudette about a year before Anderson the decision had to be made. Initially she responded well to conservative medical therapy. After a while she started having trouble in her rear legs again and we moved her into a wheelchair. She did very well for months. When there was nothing more medically we could offer her, we knew that it was time to let her go when she stopped enjoying her wheelchair. Our philosophy is quality over quantity. If we cannot achieve quality we do not see any benefit to quantity. Unlike the human side of medicine, we can and should be able to make this decision. After all, every veterinarian has taken an oath to eliminate animal suffering. If you are struggling with the decision, schedule a time to speak with your veterinarian, all of us are here to assist with this very difficult decision.

Moonstone, one of June’s birthstones (along with Alexandrite and Pearl), has a mysterious shimmer like that of a bright summer moon. A lovely moonstone gem will play with the light and shadows using the discreet colors of beige-brown, green, orange, brown or blue making it an ideal stone for jewelry. Some call it a “lover’s stone” because it brings to mind soft, tender feelings and transmits the true joy of love. It is also believed that your intuition and wisdom are increased when you wear a moonstone. In India moonstones are regarded as “dream stones” that will bring the wearer delightful visions at night. In Arabic countries women are known to wear moonstones sewn into their garments and out of sight, for in their cultures the moonstone is a symbol of fertility. Moonstones with a bluish shimmer come from Sri Lanka. Since they are becoming more rare as the years go by, their prices are always increasing. Other less rare Moonstones are found in the USA, Brazil, Australia, Myanmar and Madagascar. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. Heinz introduced bottled ketchup in 1875, and by the 1980s, Heinz Ketchup was in one of every two American households. • In 1905 in San Francisco, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson was mixing powdered flavoring in a glass of soda and water. He accidentally left the glass with the stirring stick in it on his back porch overnight. He found it frozen the next morning. This gave Epperson an idea, and 18 years later in 1923, he started selling “the Epsicle ice pop” for five cents, later changing the name to Popsicle. • In 1930, Ruth Wakefield was making chocolate cookies at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. She ran out of baking chocolate so she broke a bar of semi-sweet chocolate into little pieces and added them to the dough. When the cookies came out of the oven, the chocolate hadn’t melted. Instead there were little chips of chocolate scattered throughout the cookie. She called her new creation Toll House Crunch Cookies. She later sold the recipe to Nestle. No one can eat just one! In 1853, at the Moon Lake Lodge in Saratoga Springs, New York, a diner sent an order of french fries back to the kitchen because they were too thick. The chef, George Crum, remade the fries thinner this time, but the customer sent those back too. Crum decided to teach the diner a lesson, so he sliced a potato paper-thin and fried it until it was crisp. The customer loved them. Soon other customers were asking for potato chips. Today, in the United States, a pound of potato chips costs 200 times more than a pound of potatoes. • Sometimes, a little change can yield big results. American Airlines saved $40,000 in 1987 by eliminating one olive from each salad served in first-class. • The phrase “busy as a bee” has roots in reality. To make just two pounds of honey, bees have to visit four million flowers, traveling a distance equal to four times around the earth. • If you find yourself on the wrong end of a bee and get stung, grab an onion. This root vegetable contains a mild antibiotic that tames bee stings and also fights infections, soothes burns and relieves the itch of athlete’s foot.

¥ It was the multitalented Pierre Beaumarchais -- born in the 18th century, he was a revolutionary in both France and America as well as a watchmaker, diplomat, musician, spy, inventor, publisher and arms dealer -- who made the following sage observation: “It is not necessary to understand things in order to argue about them.” ¥ If you live in Florida, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that there are more than 3,000 different species of mosquitoes. ¥ The experts claim that roses don’t really have thorns. Botanically speaking, thorns are considered to be modified branches and are difficult to break off the stem. What roses have are known as prickles, which are just outgrowths of the stem’s outer skin -- and they are, fortunately, much easier to break off.

¥ Statistics show that after having her first child, a woman’s driving sees a measurable improvement. ¥ The name of the great state of Missouri comes from a Native American word meaning “town of large canoes.” ¥ A man named Henry Budd, before his death in 1862, directed in his will that if his sons, William and Edward, grew moustaches they would receive nothing from his estate. In further discrimination against facial hair, one Mr. Fleming, a British upholsterer, left 5 pounds in his will to each of his mustached employees, but double that to those who were clean-shaven. ¥ Those who study such things say that the Atlantic Ocean is getting 1.2 inches wider every year. If you enjoy apricots, be sure you don’t accidentally swallow the pits -- they contain substances called cyanogenetic glycosides, which, once they reach the digestive tract, are converted to cyanide.

Catastrophic events shake even the hardiest person. But, it’s human nature to want to begin putting life back in order after a catastrophe strikes. So, here are some steps to help you through the claims process. Immediately

Secure the safety of your family.

Do not enter your home unless you’re sure it’s safe. Depending on the type of disaster, there may be exposed electrical wires, standing water or a natural gas leak. If you have any concerns about the structural or environmental safety of your home, do not enter.

Contact your insurance agent directly and report your claim. )

When reporting your claim have your policy number handy and be prepared to provide your contact information so your adjuster can reach you throughout the claim process. It’s important that you provide all your phone numbers, even if they are temporary.

Take account of your loss and separate the damaged from the undamaged personal property.

If available, provide your adjuster with photos or video recordings of the loss site prior to the event. This will assist your adjuster with the damage evaluation process.

If necessary, have a qualified repair service or contractor make temporary repairs to prevent additional loss. Be sure to obtain a bill or invoice for this service so you can present it to your adjuster for consideration of reimbursement.

If bills were lost or destroyed due to the damage, contact your creditors to establish a workable solution. Discuss payment issues with them directly; creditors usually appreciate forthrightness.

If your home is uninhabitable, check with your agent or check your policy to determine if you have coverage for Additional Living Expenses.

Save all receipts to document your increase in living expenses while your home is uninhabitable.

Contact the utility companies to discontinue service if your home is uninhabitable or destroyed.

Financial Concerns

Investigate the availability of special loans and/or grants via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration, the American Red Cross, local government agencies, private lenders and philanthropic organizations.

Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Lifetime Income: A Great Mother's Day Gift Mother’s Day will soon be here. If you’re a mother, you will (hopefully) receive thoughtful cards and gifts. But there’s one present you may eventually want to give yourself, and it’s a gift that truly does Cindy Rose keep on giving: a strategy for your retirement. Of course, it’s important for everyone to build adequate financial resources for retirement — but the challenge is even greater for women. Largely due to family responsibilities, women spend, on average, 12 years less in the workforce than men, according to the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement. Less time in the workforce equates to lost earnings, missed promotions, smaller and fewer raises and reduced retirement plan benefits. In fact, men have, on average, about $91,000 in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), including all IRA types and the amounts rolled over from other retirement accounts into IRAs, compared to just $51,000 for women, according to a recent report issued by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Whether you’re married, divorced, widowed or single, you’ll want to build financial resources of your own and be prepared to manage your finances during your retirement years. You’ll be helping yourself, and, by becoming financially independent, you’ll also avoid the possibility of depending on your grown children for support. To help ensure a financially secure retirement, consider these ideas: Fully fund your IRA each year. As the numbers above show, women are way behind men when it comes to funding their IRAs. And IRAs, with their tax advantages, are great retirement-savings vehicles. A traditional IRA have the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis, while Roth IRAs have the potential to grow tax-free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2. So make it a priority to “max out” on your IRA each year. In 2011, you can put in up to $5,000 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. Boost your 401(k) contributions. Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. At the very least, contribute enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered. (In 2011, you can put in up to $16,500, or $22,000 if you’re 50 or older.) Your earnings have the opportunity to grow taxdeferred and you have a range of investment options, so your 401(k) or other retirement plan can be an effective, flexible way to put money away for the future. Invest in an annuity. If you’ve reached the contribution limits of your IRA and 401(k), you may want to consider purchasing an annuity, which can be structured to provide you with regular payments for the rest of your life. And this lifetime income source is especially important to women, who, at age 65, can expect to live, on average, almost 20 more years, compared to slightly over 17 for men of the same age, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As a mother, you willingly spend a great deal of time and effort on your children. But it’s important to also think about yourself and your future, so review your strategy for retirement with your financial advisor, and take the actions needed to help make sure you can enjoy all the Mother’s Days of your life in the comfort you deserve.

On May 8th, we celebrate Mother’s Day, a time to honor and to bless the wonderful women that God has put in our lives that make such a difference. I know that if it had not been for my mother, I perhaps would have never come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, and for that mom, I am eternally grateful. Paul talks about the faith of a mother, 2 Timothy 1:5 (New Living Translation) I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. Mother’s and father’s must be important to God as well because He tells us in the Word, Ephesians 6:2 (King James Version) 2Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;… And the promise is that if we do this, things will go well with us. Ephesians 6:2-3 (New King James Version)2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” So we at Faith Life Fellowship plan to do just that, honor our mother’s for all the wonderful things they have done for us and our families. We will be holding a very special service that morning and we would like to invite you and your family to join us! We are honored to have with us that morning, Len and Cathy Mink from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Len Mink is a gifted singer and songwriter of today’s Christian music. He has been the worship leader for Kenneth Copeland in his Believers Conventions for 35 years. Len and Cathy have recently begun their own weekly television program on the TCT television network. The program, called Len and Cathy, is seen in 173 countries on Skyangel channel 133 and on DIRECTV channel 377. Len also has a powerful ministry to children through his Gospel Duck series. These dynamic tools are designed to empower children with the Word of God and the authority of the believer. Len & Cathy have been sharing Jesus all over the world. Cathy is also a graduate of Ohio State University and RHEMA Bible Training Center. She has a daily radio broadcast on The Oasis Network and teaches weekly on The Len & Cathy television broadcast seen on DIRECTV on the TCT Christian Network (channel 377). This program reaches 173. countries and is carried on 1800 cable networks. She also ministers with faith and power in churches, youth conventions, women’s meetings and seminars around the world, seeing marvelous miracles and lives changed everywhere through her testimony and seasoned and relevant teaching. The impact of her vital message has made her one of the most sought-after Bible teachers of today. Please join us Sunday, May 8th @ 10:30 a.m. for a wonderful time of music, praise, and faith teaching from the Word of God. Child care will be provided. See our display ad on this page for directions to the church.
