What was your favorite candy when you were growing up? Take a nostalgic look back at the history behind some of the early varieties you may have enjoyed, many of them long gone but not forgotten. • The first candy to combine milk chocolate, marshmallow, peanuts and caramel was the Goo Goo Cluster, introduced in 1913 and sold unwrapped from large glass candy jars in the drug store. When a regular customer mentioned that the candy was “So good, people will ask for it from birth,” the creator named his confection after the first sounds made by his newborn son, “Goo Goo!” • The invention of America’s first candy machine, a lozenge cutter in 1847, got the NECCO wafers their start. The familiar pastel candies were sold for over 50 years before they were given their name, an acronym for the New England Confectionery Company that produced them. The same company introduced conversation hearts in 1866, dubbing them “motto hearts” and printing such messages as “Be Good,” “Be True” and “Kiss Me.” The phrases have been updated in recent years, adding “Call Me,” “Fax Me” and “Email Me.” In 2011, NECCO added “Tweet Me” to the list of mottos. turn the page for more!

OLD-TIME CANDY (continued): • It’s likely that nearly every child in America has at some time received a ball-shaped lollipop from the bank teller. These little pops, known as Dum Dums, have been around since 1924 when they were introduced by the Akron Candy Company. Sales manager I.C. Bahr named the pop, figuring Dum Dum was a word any child could say. Seven original flavors were introduced, with many added and deleted over the years, including the famous Mystery Flavor. The Mystery Flavor changes regularly since it is a blend of the tail end of one batch and the beginning of the next, whatever they may be. • Remember Chuckles? These sugar-coated jelly candies have been around since 1921, when a Chicago marshmallow manufacturer introduced them. The five-flavored strip of candies was widely advertised with the slogan “5 flavors – 5 cents.” • Chick-O-Sticks and Chicken Bones were pretty much the same thing. Introduced in 1938 as Chicken Bones, this was a honeycombed candy filled with peanut butter and rolled in toasted coconut. In 1955, it was discovered that another company already owned the name, and the change was made to Chick-O-Sticks. • There’s nothing like pouring straight sugar down your throat, which is what we did with Pixy Stix, a powdered sugar packaged in a drinking straw. It started out as a drink mix in the late 1940s called Frutol, but since kids seemed to prefer the straight powder, Pixy Stix made their debut in 1952. • The chocolate-covered, crunchy peanut butter bar 5th Avenue was the 1938 brainstorm of William Luden, who is more famous as the creator of Luden’s cough drops. • Back in the 1950s when James Dean and Marlon Brando looked cool with their cigarettes rolled up in their T-shirt sleeves, candy cigarettes were all the rage with kids. It seems that candy makers actually worked with the tobacco companies to help attract young smokers! Although the original candy cigs with their “lit” red tip are long gone, they are now reproduced but, we hope, with a different goal. Some folks who have quit smoking pass out packs to friends on the anniversary of their last cigarette. • Those little hollow tubes of black licorice coated with pastel-colored candy were known as Snaps. They appeared at candy counters for the first time around 1930 and can still be found at specialty candy shops. You’ll have a little more trouble finding wax lips, introduced in the early 1900s, which could be chewed into a waxy, cherry-flavored gum. If you didn’t like the lips, vampire fangs and moustaches were also available. Continued on page 9

Cats communicate with common feline cues of body posture, facial expressions, over 100 vocalizations and pheromones (odors). Feline senses (hearing, sight, smell, taste, vibrations) are highly evolved whereas human senses are dulled in comparison. Your cat may understand you better than you imagine and it might you that needs to learn more to understand your cat. A welcoming posture of seeing a caring human is first advertised by friendly “meows”, followed by a happy facial expression, a ‘tail salute’ with the tail straight up and coming over to greet you. Facial expressions (eyes, ears, head angle and whiskers) are for close encounters that show how the newcomer will be received. Friend or foe have clues on how they will be welcomed. A defensive or aggressive posture may communicate ‘stay away’ or ‘I am frightened’ by making the arched back Halloween cat with all its hair standing straight up, a fluffed tail saying to the approaching cat “I am big and tough and I will fight you!” Many cat fights are averted by ‘acting tough’ at a distance. A truly angry cat is going to fight and it is time for the victim to run or be prepared to fight. A cat outside its territory or social group usually will not fight (except in breeding season) because injury might compromise survival. Feeding cats in domestication is still in an evolution. Cats are true obligate carnivores that require meat protein to survive. The best diet for a cat are fresh killed healthy mice and birds. Modern substitute diets (dry and canned commercial foods) have many positives but they are not perfect. Raw meat diets are contaminated by the nature of raw processing and they can possess a greater risk in causing dietary disease. Fresh, clean water is essential for your cat and many cats will not drink water if it is too close to their food. What is the best diet for your cat? First your cat must find the diet palatable. Next the ingredients must be the building blocks of a healthy cat. Many diets fulfill this goal – commercial, home-made and specialty diets. There is no diet that fits the needs of every cat, so humans need to find the diet that best fits their cat. To Be Continued: Part 3 of 4 Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. The Gem Advisor Blue Tourmaline

Scott McQueen The tourmaline gemstone group offers gemstone enthusiasts a great variety of colors. However, not all colors occur with equal frequency and they are not equally well known. A pure blue tourmaline with a fervent, translucent, radiant blue is one of the rarest gemstones around. They are highly valued because they are quite scarce and incredibly beautiful. Additional value may come from what some think they do for the wearer. Gemstone therapists* say the blue tourmaline makes people both honest and tolerant. Blue tourmalines have quite a complex structure so cutting them demands patience and experience, something few lapidaries have. The inside of a tourmaline can have areas of tension that can cause the stone to crack while being worked on. A cutter can easily ruin a tourmaline by holding it the wrong way against his cutting-wheel. Once a tourmaline survives the cutting process it is a rather tough gemstone that requires little care. If you’re one of the fortunate few who own a blue tourmaline – the pleasure will be all yours and yours for a very long time!

Q: I was working in my yard and noticed my neighbor’s landscaper using a weed trimmer without any protection from flying debris. Gas-powered professional weed trimmers can be quite powerful and sure enough, almost as soon as I saw him, he struck an area that contained a bit of gravel. A stone flew up and hit him in the eye, resulting in a trip to the hospital and several days out of work. Please remind your readers to wear safety equipment when using power tools and lawncare equipment. -- Josh G., Indianapolis A: That’s a good point, and one well worth paying attention to. Often, we’re in a hurry to just finish up with the yard work. Or, it’s too hot or too aggravating to put on safety gear like impact-resistant goggles and sturdy gloves. But spending a couple extra dollars to purchase the right equipment and safety gear, and taking a few extra seconds to put it on, can prevent injuries and even save your life. In fact, there are a number of preventive measures to take before starting yard work. The folks at Topical Biomedics (which, handily, sells a pain relief and healing cream for those post-yard work sore muscles) offer a few additional tips: --Before doing any heavy yard work, warm up for at least 10 minutes with some lighter tasks. --Cover any exposed skin with sunscreen to prevent sunburn. --Sturdy gloves will protect your hands from blisters, scratches, insect bites, poison ivy, the heat from gas-powered, handheld lawn-care tools, and flying debris. --Sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles are critical safety gear when working around any power tool. --Eye protection -- goggles specifically made to resist highimpact strikes -- will protect you from flying debris, accidental chemical spills, and many eye irritants and allergens. --Face protection: a dust or filter mask should be worn when spreading fertilizer or spraying yard chemicals, and can be a big help to those with seasonal allergies while doing yard work. --Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect skin from scratches caused by low-hanging tree branches and other plants. --Wear noise-reducing earmuffs, a hard hat and a steel mesh face visor when using a chainsaw. HOME TIP: Always give your lawn a quick walk through before mowing, and remove debris like fallen limbs, toys and rocks that could damage your equipment or injure you. OLD-TIME CANDY (continued): • The Pittsburgh-based D.L. Clark Company had a hit in 1917 with a chocolate-covered honeycomb of ground, roasted peanuts, simply called Clark Bar. This confection became so popular with U.S. troops stationed overseas in World War I, it became a giant sensation back at home as well. The same company produced the Zagnut candy bar beginning in 1930, a crunchy peanut butter bar covered in toasted coconut. The word “zigzag” became popular in the 1930s, and it’s believed that’s where the name originated. • Many children spent their allowance on the caramel Slo Poke suckers, because according to the familiar jingle, “Get yourself a Slo Poke, it lasts all day!” If you were a chocolate fan, you could purchase the similar Black Cow. • How about our preferred chewing gums? Three of our old favorites, Black Jack, Beemans and Clove were discontinued years ago, but the Cadbury Adams Company, which owns the formulas, cooks up a batch of each every couple of years. The licorice-flavored Black Jack gum was the first flavored gum in America. Back in the late 1800s, an Ohio physician Dr. Edward E. Beeman marketed a gum of pepsin powder and chicle, designed to aid digestion. Legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager made Beemans gum famous by chewing a stick before every flight for good luck. In fact, the antacid qualities of pepsin made the gum popular with pilots for reducing stomach agitation in flight. Clove gum was first manufactured in 1914 by Thomas Adams. Legend has it that Clove grew in popularity during Prohibition because its strong smell masked the odor of illegal alcohol on the breath. The Beech Nut Company launched Fruit Stripe gum in the 1960s with a zebra as its “spokesman,” packaging it in zebra-striped wrappers. It was the only gum with stripes, which were added on after the gum was made. The down side of Fruit Stripe was that it lost its flavor very quickly, and now that it has been re-introduced, the complaint is the same — It’s pretty much flavorless in just over five minutes.

• Chicago’s Williamson Candy Store produced and sold chocolate back around 1920. One of their young customers hung around the establishment so much, before long the employees were asking him to do little odd jobs, “Oh, Henry, could you do this?” and “Oh, Henry, will you bring me that?” Soon after, their newest confection was named the Oh Henry bar.

BRING THIS AD IN FOR A FREE DVD WITH NEW LOAN Change by April Norton "Action and reaction, ebb and flow, trial and error, change - this is the rhythm of living. Out of our overconfidence, fear; out of our fear, clearer vision, fresh hope. And out of hope, progress." - Bruce Barton Throughout time, change has been constantly inevitable. Some good, some bad- but always different. As an example, according to a recent study published in CNN Money, home ownership recently fell to the lowest it has been in 15 years; due largely, in part, to foreclosure. This statement alone proves that many people in our country are facing the change of extreme economic hardship. The "hope" factor is often missing in these cases as fear consumes and renders some unable to create progress. As time marches on, we are faced more and more with circumstance that forces variation perhaps once not considered. Everything is about perspective. Cindy Rose Actions taken today will play a role in change tomorrow. Taking that next step- the one that is commonly outside of our comfort zone- could be the first of many onto the path of hope and renewal." Please see our ad on page 1 of Tidbits. April Norton, Esq. by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry Why Is My Breath STINKY? …….. and What Can I Do About It? (Part 2)Do You Have Traveler’s Breath? Does a Smaller Waist cause Bad Breath? Q. What is Traveler’s Breath? A. Traveler’s Breath is bad breath that develops while traveling. Oftentimes while traveling, especially by plane, the salivary glands slow saliva production. This allows bacteria to grow inside the mouth, which leads to bad breath. Travelers usually have to alter their food intake while at the airport or on the plane. This usually means wolfing down a fast food and a soda, and ignoring after-meals good oral hygiene. Bacteria then break down small bits of food left in the mouth producing stinky sulfur compounds – “Traveler’s Breath”.

Q. I’m on a low-carb diet, and my breath stinks. Why? A. As dieters shed pounds, they may be saying “goodbye” to carbs, but “hello” to halitosis. Low carb diets cause the body to burn stored fat, instead of carbohydrates. Chemicals called “ketones” are produced when the body burns it’s fat reserves. High protein foods can generate more sulfur breakdown products, especially on the back of the tongue. Food for thought: Does a smaller waist cause Stinky Breath? Q. So………..what can I do about my stinky breath? A. 1. Drink plenty of water to wash away bacteria and food particles. If you’re on a high protein diet, plenty of water can dilute the stinky ketones. 2. Chew sugarless gum, especially after meals. Chewing gum increases beneficial saliva production. Gums sweetened with Xylitol are especially beneficial, because of Xylitol’s cavity fighting benefits. 3. Chew Parsley. (Huh?) Parsley chewing increases saliva production. (Better get some at the super market, before people find out about this, and there’s a run on parsley! 4. Keep a toothbrush handy and brush after all meals. 5. Get a good tongue scraper, and scrape those stinky bacteria and sulfur compounds off. Get way Back there and “go for it”. FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:

CHRISTO REDENTOR

Watching over the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with outstretched arms, stands the Christo Redentor or Christ the Redeemer statue. This week, Tidbits imparts some little-known facts about this wonder of the modern world. • Although it may appear that this immense statue stands in the middle of the wilderness, it is actually located in the heart of the city in the urban forest of Tijuca National Park. Christ the Redeemer stands atop the 2,300-foot (701-m) peak of Corcovado Mountain. The statue is visible from 20 miles (32.2 km) away.

Q: I’ve loved Tim Matheson since I first saw him in “Animal House” all those years ago. Can you tell me what he’s doing now? -- Tracey P., Allentown, Pa. A: You and me both, Tracey. Tim is as busy as ever, directing and co-starring in the CW’s “Hart of Dixie” (airing Tuesday nights at 8/7c), and he couldn’t be happier in this latest gig. He told me recently what he likes so much about the show: “We’re this crazy, totally disparate group of people in this small Southern town -- kind of a magical town -- and despite all our differences and conflicts and strong feelings, we all somehow manage to get along. “Our characters have tremendous flaws and failings. Nobody’s perfect. But we somehow manage to get through our day -- and life -- without crashing and burning. That’s what we all kind of hope for, and I think there’s a little bit of those flaws and failings in everyone. And the show takes you someplace that you don’t expect and in ways that you don’t expect. It’s tremendous fun, and it’s very sincere.” *** Q: Is it true that Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green are leaving “The Voice”? -- Gian W., via e-mail A: Yes, but only temporarily. Usher and Shakira are coming to the show this spring as coaches, with Christina and Cee Lo returning next fall. The decision was made to offer contestants varied coaching styles and to accommodate the coaches’ tour schedules. *** Q: I saw Adam Ant on an entertainment television show recently, but I only caught the tail end of it. Can you tell me what he’s doing? -- Dale W., Atlantic City, N.J. A: Adam has a new album, “Adam Ant is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner’s Daughter,” which is due to hit stores this January, and he is touring the U.S. for the first time in 17 years. I spoke with Adam recently, and he is thrilled to play for American audiences again -- this time, on HIS terms. “I think when you are able to do something that you’re getting paid for, it only becomes a job when it’s work, when you’re working on someone else’s terms, and you don’t enjoy it as much as you should. And you become exhausted, which sort of happened to me,” Ant said. “But now I find I really appreciate the fact that there’s the opportunity to do it under my own terms. I do what is right for me and my work. I don’t even think about it; I just get out there and do it.” For a rare look into the musical genius, go to celebrityextraonline.com to read my full interview with Adam. *** Q: What’s your favorite new show of the fall so far? -- Hillary R., via e-mail A: Hands-down, my favorite new show is “The Mindy Project,” which airs Tuesday nights at 9:30/8:30c. It’s funny, sweet, quirky and a little bit edgy, like the show’s namesake. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

In 1789, his letters grew less frequent. She continued to write to him and vented her frustration at his growing aloofness. After her husband died, Cosway moved to a village in Italy to open a convent school for girls. ¥ On Oct. 11, 1793, the death toll from a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia hits 100. By the time it ended, 5,000 people were dead. A vaccine prevents yellow fever in much of the world, though 20,000 people still die every year from the disease. ¥ On Oct. 14, 1944, German Gen. Erwin Rommel, nicknamed “the Desert Fox,” is given the option of facing a public trial for treason, as a co-conspirator in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, or taking cyanide. He chose the latter. The German government gave Rommel a state funeral. His death was attributed to war wounds. ¥ On Oct. 8, 1956, New York Yankees right-hander Don Larsen pitches the first no-hitter in the history of the World Series. This is for all the germ conscious folks that worry about using cold water to clean. John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan. After spending a great evening chatting the night away, the next morning John's grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking, 'Are these plates clean?'

His grandfather replied, 'They're as clean as cold water can get em. Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!'

Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving, his grandfather's dog started to growl, and wouldn't let him pass. John yelled and said, 'Grandfather, your dog won't let me get to my car'. Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted! 'Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!'

For lunch the old man made hamburgers. Again, John was concerned about the plates, as his appeared to have tiny specks around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked, 'Are you sure these plates are clean?' Without looking up the old man said, 'I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don't you fret, I don't want to hear another word about it!'
