“WE’VE GOT THE BLUES” by Kathy Wolfe

No, we’re not sad or downhearted – Tidbits is just bringing you some quick facts about the color blue, everything from royal and powder to indigo, cerulean, azure and cobalt. • • Whether or not we realize it, color can affect our emotions, mood and well-being. Blue is the color of calmness, tranquility and relaxation. It’s believed by many that just seeing the color causes the brain to secrete calming hormones. For this reason, many doctors and dentists have their offices painted blue. • • Back in 1903, Crayola offered one blue crayon, simply called blue. Cornflower and periwinkle were made available in 1949, aquamarine in 1957 and midnight blue in 1958. According to Crayola, seven out of the top 10 of America’s favorite colors are in the blue family. That plain old blue is number one, with cerulean in the number two spot, midnight at number four, aquamarine at five, followed by periwinkle in slot seven, denim at eight and blizzard blue at 10.

It is their habit not to speak with members of the audience, and if you ask for an autograph, expect a smear of blue paint. • • According to folklore, if you dream of the color blue, you will be free from worry or will receive help from an outside source. • • The word “blue” has found its way into many terms in the English language. Of course, if you’re feeling blue, you’re unhappy or downcast. Yet, conversely, if blue skies are coming your way, it means that happy times are imminent. If you use blue language, it is characterized by profanity or cursing. Were you born into the nobility or aristocracy? You might be described as a blue-blood. Has something hit you out of the blue? It seemingly came from nowhere at an unexpected time. Someone who’s done a blue-ribbon job has put in a top-notch, first-place performance. If an event is considered rare, it comes along “once in a blue moon.” A true-blue friend has proven himself to be loyal and faithful.

Laugh Lines! A fellow filled his tank at a rural gas station, paid the bill and bought a soft drink. He stood by his car to drink his cola and watched a couple of men working along the roadside. One man would dig a hole two or three feet deep and then move on. The other man came along behind and filled in the hole. The men worked right past the fellow with the soft drink and went on down the road. “I can’t stand this,” said the man tossing the can in a trash container and heading down the road toward the men. “Hold it, hold it,” he said to the men. “Can you tell me what’s going on here with this digging?” “Well, we work for the county government,” one of the men said. “But one of you is digging a hole and the other is filling it up. You’re not accomplishing anything. Aren’t you wasting the county’s money?” “You don’t understand, mister,” one of the men said, leaning on his shovel and wiping his brow. “Normally there’s three of us--me, Rodney and Mike. I dig the hole, Rodney sticks in the tree and Mike here puts the dirt back.” “Yea,” piped up Mike. “Now just because Rodney’s sick, that don’t mean we can’t work, does it?”

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Are Pets People, Too? A recent article in a British newspaper suggested that pet owners stop being called “owners” and start being called “parents.” Why? Because pets are considered so much a part of the family that they shouldn’t be considered property, the article suggested. The trend toward treating a pet like ... well, practically another child ... isn’t new, but it certainly is growing. According to Hartz Mountain Corp.’s recently released Hartz Trend Report, 47 percent of pet owners surveyed said their pet is like a child to them. Another 42 percent said their pet is comparable to a good friend. There seem to be some real benefits to animals as this trend grows. Most prospective owners surveyed consider “personality” to be more important than a pet’s pedigree. And a growing number have or are considering adopting their pet from a rescue society -- 60 percent said so in the survey. These results don’t necessarily mean that your local mall soon will be filled with “mommies” pushing their beloved Lab or Terrier around in a stroller (most self-respecting medium- to large-sized dogs wouldn’t take that treatment anyway). The people surveyed considered traits like loyalty and obedience to be important qualities. So, what do you think? Is your dog or cat a part of the family, or something even more important -- almost another child? Tell me your experience or opinion on the matter by emailing me at ask@pawscorner.com. Or, check out the informal poll on my website at www.pawscorner.com. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. She decided to get his attention. “Johnny,” she said, “If the world is 25,000 miles around and eggs are sixty cents a dozen, how old am I?” “Thirty-four,” Johnny answered unhesitatingly. The teacher replied, “Well, that’s not far from my actual age. Tell me...how did you guess?” “Oh, there’s nothing to it,” Johnny said. “My big sister is seventeen and she’s only half-crazy.”

WEEK of MAY 30rd ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you would prefer to move forward at a steady pace, it might be a good idea to stop and reassess your plans. You could find a good reason to make a change at this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Just when you thought you had everything planned to the smallest detail, you get some news that could unsettle things. But a timely explanation helps put it all back on track. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home and work continue to compete for your attention. But you handle it well by giving each its proper due. Someone you trust offers valuable advice. Listen to it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Unsettling news creates a difficult but not impossible situation. Continue to follow your planned routine, but keep your mind open to a possible change down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Lick your wounded pride if you like, but it’s a better idea to find out why your suggestions were rejected. What you learn could help you deal with an upcoming situation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Feeling a bit listless? No wonder. You might be pushing too hard to finish everything on your to-do list. Cutting it down could help get your energy levels up. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Taking time out of your busy schedule might be the best way to handle that sensitive private matter. It will help reassure everyone involved about your priorities. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Insist on full disclosure by all parties before agreeing to be part of a “great deal.” What you learn should help you decide whether to go with it or not. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your decision to protect the secret that was entrusted to you might irk some people. But it also wins you the admiration of those who value trust and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Creative activities take on a practical approach as you realize you might be able to market your work. Ask for advice from someone experienced in this area. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) If you’re suddenly a bit unsure about your decision, ask trusted colleagues and/or friends or family members for suggestions that could help resolve your doubts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20). A workplace situation could get stormy. But stay on course until there’s a solution that meets with everyone’s approval, and things can finally calm down. Need Help Buying or Selling a Home? By Samantha Mazzotta

Plant Can Overrun Garden Q: Help! I planted just one mint plant last summer in my flower and herb patch. It died off during the winter, but now several small mint plants are springing up around the dead plant and spreading out around the patch and into my grass. How can I limit this plant’s growth? -- Sandra H., via email A: Mint, like several other types of plants (including bamboo, jasmine and wisteria among others), will take over your garden if it’s not watched carefully. As a weed, it’s opportunistic and hardy. Of course, it’s also a great herb to have on hand, especially in the heat of summer when it’s a great addition to a frosty porch drink. As the plant is spreading right in the midst of the other plants in the flower and herb patch during the growth season, ripping all the offending roots out is not yet possible. Through the summer and early fall, handweed the mint back as close to its original spot as possible. Because the mint roots spread underground, be careful not to pull up the roots of surrounding herbs and flowers as you weed. Since you’re using it as part of the herb patch, don’t try using a weed-killing chemical on it. To keep mint from spreading beyond its roots, don’t allow it to flower - snap off flowering extensions if and as they appear. Once the growing season is over and all your herbs have been harvested, you can take more drastic measures. Dig up the garden patch, turning over the soil, so that you can locate and remove all of the plant’s root extensions. You may need to remove part of the lawn sod on which the mint spread as well, in order to locate and remove mint roots from it. Reseed or resod before the first hard frost -- otherwise cover with straw and reseed in early spring. If you plan to keep the mint plant, I’d recommend carefully digging it up and transplanting it to a solid-sided pot. It can be then kept and tended above ground.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Diet Takes Backseat as Gout Treatment Layered BLT Salad I took most men’s much-loved sandwich, the BLT, and transformed it into something that tasted great but didn’t come between two or three slices of bread! 4 cups finely shredded lettuce 1 1/2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes 1/4 cup purchased bacon bits 4 slices reduced-calorie white bread, toasted and cubed 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup fat-free Thousand Island dressing 1/4 cup fat-free mayonnaise 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes In an 8-by-8-inch dish, layer lettuce, tomatoes, bacon bits, toast cubes and Cheddar cheese. In a small bowl, combine Thousand Island dressing, mayonnaise and parsley flakes. Spread dressing mixture evenly over top. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Divide into 4 servings. ¥ Each serving equals: About 175 calories, 3g fat, 10g protein, 27g carb., 684mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Starch, 1 1/2 Vegetable, 1/2 Meat. (c) 2011 King Features Synd. Inc.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Do you have information on gout? I am 65, and my son-in-law is 32. We both have it. It is so painful. My doctor was pretty vague. He asked me to go on the computer to find which foods I should or should not eat. I found that you can’t eat meat and fish, but salmon and chicken are all right. Some vegetables can’t be eaten. How about tomatoes and tomato products? Does one attack mean gout is forever? What is the medicine of choice? -- C.B. ANSWER: Gout comes about when the blood uric-acid level rises. Uric acid seeps into joints to form needle-shaped crystals that cause joint swelling and unspeakable pain. Uric acid, in turn, is a byproduct of cell chemistry. Its blood level rises because a person makes too much or passes too little into the urine. A first gout attack most often occurs in the joint at the base of the big toe. The skin over the joint turns red, and the joint swells and becomes exceedingly painful. One of the best ways of diagnosing gout is to draw fluid from the affected joint and examine it with a microscope to see the needle-shaped uric-acid crystals. Gout can affect other joints: the knee, wrist, ankle and fingers. One attack of gout doesn’t call for lifelong treatment. Indocin (indomethacin) is the drug most often used for an acute gout attack. Colchicine and cortisone also work well. Medicines for gout prevention are taken if a person has frequent attacks (two or three a year), has formed uric-acid kidney stones, has kidney damage secondary to gout or passes large amounts of uric acid into the urine. Zyloprim (allopurinol) reduces uric acid production. Probenecid increases its elimination into the urine. Uloric, a new gout drug, is for those not responding to these two. Diet was the sole means for gout treatment in the old days. Now, with effective medicines, it takes a back seat. You ought to eliminate organ meats -- liver, kidney, sweetbreads and brain. Decrease but don’t eliminate red meat and shellfish. Beer should be avoided. Wine can be taken in small amounts. Soft drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup (and most do) shouldn’t be drunk. You can eat all vegetables and any vegetable you want. That’s the gout diet. Not complicated. The booklet on gout explains this common disorder in detail. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is distilled water bad for drinking? Can you chew too much gum? My husband chews about four pieces every day. -- P.M. ANSWER: Distilling water involves boiling water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components dissolved in the water are left behind. You can drink distilled water. You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways. If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Intrigued, she asked, “How can you tell?” He responded, “3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone.”

$500 Bankruptcy

Give Dad a New Car for Father’s Day ¥ “Store kitchen matches wrapped in tin foil to keep them dry while on camping or fishing trips. You also can store them in an empty pill bottle if they’re the short kind. Fill paper eggcarton cups with dryer lint and drizzle them with wax; cut the cups apart, and you’ll have small firestarters for your campfires. My family does a lot of camping in the summer, and we use these every time.” -- K.R. in Missouri ¥ To get scorched pan bottoms clean, scrub with sudsy ammonia and rinse well. ¥ “Most people know that baby-food jars make wonderful organizer containers. But you also can make a great first cup from a baby-food jar. Screw on the lid tightly and poke holes along one side. Baby can tip and sip, but not much will come out. They are just the right size for small hands.” -- M.W. in Alabama ¥ Baby oil can loosen soap scum from shower doors. Apply and buff lightly with a soft washcloth. Follow with a shampoo cleaning, or just leave as is. It will repel water, and smells nice, too. ¥ To keep shirt collars from absorbing oil and grime, sprinkle with talcum powder while ironing. ¥ Keep your steering wheel in touchable condition on very hot days with a paper grocery bag. Cut out a strip down one side of the bag to allow it to slip over the steering column. The bag can be refolded and stored next to your seat. When you get out of the car, just slip the bag over the steering wheel. No more burning hands when you get back in the car. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
