August has been action-packed over the years. This week, Tidbits brings you some history-making events from the crazy days of summers past and present. • • When the cornerstone of the Statue of Liberty was laid in August of 1884, it was placed on Bedloe’s Island, which previously had been known as Love Island. The land didn’t officially become Liberty Island until 1956. When the Statue of Liberty arrived from France, it was in 350 individual pieces that were put together and officially dedicated in October of 1886. • • The first edition of Sports Illustrated hit the newsstands in August of 1954, featuring Milwaukee Braves player Eddie Mathews on the cover. Inside, readers found a tri-fold of 27 baseball trading cards, including such greats as Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Gil Hodges and Duke Snider. Although a hit, the magazine showed no profit for the next 12 years. Michael Jordan has set the record for the number of cover appearances at 56, with the New York Yankees the most featured team. Four U.S. Presidents have made the cover — Kennedy, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. Every year, Sports Illustrated gives its “Sportsman of the Year” award. Roger Bannister, the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, was given that honor during the magazine’s inaugural year. • • In August of 1914, the 48-mile (77-km) Panama Canal opened to ship traffic, with its first cargo liner, the SS Ancon. It had been under construction since 1904, and opening day was two years ahead of schedule. Nearly 27,500 people lost their lives during the construction. By passing through the canal, a ship sailing from New York to San Francisco saves about 8,000 miles (12,875 km) over a trip around the tip

Laugh Lines! Two friends, one an optimist and the other a pessimist, could never quite agree on any topic of discussion. One day the optimist decided he had found a good way to pull his friend out of his continual pessimistic thinking. The optimist owned a hunting dog that could walk on water. His plan? Take the pessimist and the dog out duck hunting in a boat. They got out into the middle of the lake, and the optimist brought down a duck. The dog immediately walked out across the water, retrieved the duck, and walked back to the boat. The optimist looked at his pessimistic friend and said, “What do you think about that?” The pessimist replied, “That dog can’t swim, can he?”

of South America’s Cape Horn. During the canal’s early days, about 1,000 ships passed through each year. That figure today is close to 15,000 ships making the nine-hour pass between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. • • August is a month for stray baseballs! In 1979, Seattle Mariner Ruppert Jones hit a foul ball in the Kingdome that stuck in the stadium’s loudspeaker above the first base line. The following August, Yankee Bob Watson had a hit off the Kingdome’s center-field speaker. The very next day, Watson did exactly the same thing! Shortly after that feat, the speakers were raised from 102 feet (31 m) above the field to 132 feet (40.2 m). In August of 1983, Yankee pitcher Dave Winfield threw a warm-up ball and accidentally struck and killed a seagull at the Toronto Blue Jays’ stadium. But pitcher Nolan Ryan was in complete control during August of 1989 when he became the first Major League pitcher to achieve 5,000 strikeouts. By the time he retired four years later, he had struck out 5,714 batters. • • It’s been 34 years this month since the death of Elvis Presley at age 42 at his Graceland home. The official cause of death was listed as coronary arrhythmia. The King’s funeral was held at his home, with a processional to Forest Hill Cemetery following the service. More than 80,000 people lined the route. • • Henry Leland founded the Cadillac Automobile Company in August of 1902, naming it after his ancestor, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit in 1701. • • When William Gray’s wife became very ill in 1888, he was in desperate need of a telephone to call a doctor. There were very few phones in Hartford, Connecticut, and Gray ran to a neighboring factory, begging to use theirs, but was told it was not for public use. When the owners finally gave in to his pleading, the doctor was reached, and Mrs. Gray recovered. This incident spurred Gray, a machinist, to invent a coin-operated telephone. He received his patent in August of 1889, and the first payphone was installed at a local bank. By 1902, the United States was home to 81,000 payphones. • • The first and last atomic bombings in history took place in August of 1945. The United States dropped the first nuclear weapon, known as “Little Boy,” on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6 and the second, called “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki three days later. Fatality estimates for Hiroshima were 90,000 to 160,000 people and 60,000 to 80,000 for Nagasaki. • • On an August morning in 1907, Seattle residents shopped at the Pike Place Market for the first time. This famous street market came into being because citizens were tired of being overcharged for their produce. Avoiding the middleman, farmers brought their wares to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street, and were met by more than 10,000 shoppers. Today the Market’s nine acres house more than 200 full-time businesses and 190 craftspeople, as well as 100 farmers who rent space by the day. The Market is also home to 300 apartments. It’s now one of Washington state’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing 10 million visitors annually. • • Visit Twinsburg, Ohio, during the first ...continued on next column

weekend of August, and you can get in on the Twins Day Festival. When it began in 1976, the community hosted 37 sets of twins. Attendance reached a peak of 2,680 sets in 1994 and settled in at 1,700 last year. The Festival doesn’t limit itself just to twins —They happily welcome all multiples to a weekend with featuring s parade, talent shows and musical entertainment. • • We’ve all heard of the Cy Young Award, but how much do we really know about Cy Young? Denton T. (Cy) Young pitched his first major league baseball game in August of 1890 for the Cleveland Spiders. He was the first to pitch a perfect game and was responsible for many other records, some of which still stand. Young has the most career wins (511) and the most innings pitched (7,355) during his 22-year pro ball career. The Cy Young Award, which honors the season’s best pitcher, was established in 1956, the year after his death. • • The United States’ first official census commenced on the first Monday in August of 1790. • • During the first week of August every year, the community of Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,400, hosts the Black Hills Classic Motorcycle Rally. Begun in 1938 with nine bikers in a half-mile race, the event now draws hundreds of thousands of participants. Record-setting attendance was at the rally’s 60th anniversary in 2000, when more than 600,000 bikers cruised into Sturgis. In 1976, the average amount spent per person was $50. Today that figure tops $1,000. The community’s businesses earn 95 percent of their annual revenue during this one week, and the state’s coffers are filled with about $1 million in sales tax alone.

identity theft
¥ On Aug. 23, 1814, during the war of 1812, first lady Dolley Madison abandoned the couple’s personal belongings to save the full-length portrait of former president George Washington from desecration by vengeful British soldiers. The next night, British troops burned the White House. ¥ On Aug. 24, 1875, Captain Matthew Webb of Great Britain becomes the first man to successfully swim the English Channel without assistance. Webb reached shore in 21 hours and 45 minutes. In 1883, Webb attempted to swim the Niagara River, and drowned in 10 minutes. His body was found four days later. ¥ On Aug. 28, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson is picketed by woman suffragists in front of the White House, who demand that he support an amendment to the Constitution that would guarantee women the right to vote. Wilson had a history of lukewarm support for women’s suffrage even, though he was a former teacher at a women’s college and the father of two daughters. ¥ On Aug. 26, 1939, television station W2XBS in New York City broadcasts a doubleheader between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. It was the first Major League Baseball game ever aired on television. ¥ On Aug. 25, 1944, after more than four years of Nazi occupation, Paris is liberated by the French 2nd Armored Division and the U.S. 4th Infantry Division. German General Dietrich von Choltitz defied an order by Adolf Hitler to blow up Paris’ landmarks and burn the city to the ground before its liberation. ¥ On Aug. 27, 1967, Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, is found dead of an accidental drug overdose in his Sussex, England, home. The world might never have heard of the Beatles were it not for Epstein. Just a few months after being hired he got them their first recording contract with Parlophone Records. ¥ On Aug. 29, 1982, Swedish-born actress and three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman dies of cancer in London on her 67th birthday. Bergman was best known for her role as Ilsa Lund in “Casablanca.” (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Could you be a criminal? (and not know it) By George Cravens
A friend of mine told me that his relative had her purse stolen. It was at a party. It seemed unfortunate. She did the normal things. Canceled the cards, got a new license, etc. The same things you and I would do. It was a pain. But it was done… and over…..or so she thought. A couple of months later, she received a letter from a casino saying that due to her recent illegal activity at that casino, she was no longer permitted to go to that casino. “If you step into the casino, you will be arrested….on the spot.” She called and said that she had never been to the casino and there had been some mix up. They said, “come and turn yourself in and we will see what is and is not true.”
What would you do?
My friend just didn’t want the headache and never tried to clear her name. I hope that she won’t have future problems! This is yet another example of Identity Theft. Someone steals your identity and commits fraud or other crimes and YOU get charged. It is awful! And it happens more than you think! Everyday people have their identities stolen. They are used for all sorts of illegal activity. You can have yours stolen and never know that crimes are being committed in your good name! It is a hideous crime and impossible to stop. The question is what are you going to do to protect yourself. The Federal Trade Commission continues to issue reports about how bad Identity Theft is in the USA. They make a number of suggestions. “While there are no guarantees about avoiding identity theft, it’s important for you to know how to: • Deter identity thieves by safeguarding your personal information. • Detect suspicious activity by routinely monitoring your financial accounts and billing statements. • Defend against identity theft as soon as you suspect a problem.” ….says the FTC. No one else is going to do this for you. And either you are pro-active or you are reactive. Proactive is a lot less painful! The smart person realizes that with one in six people being stung with identity theft, it is simply a matter of time before it happens to you. Make sure you deal with this. Get an Identity Theft service to “watch your back”. Remember forewarned is fore-armed!
On the Black Market….. Here are some sample prices of what your information is worth to a hacker once they get it (keep in mind they can sell it over and over and over!) $1000—Name, password for an online account $80—Magnet strip data on a premium level credit card $6—Mother’s maiden name $3—Social Security number Consumer Reports, 06/2011

Week of August 22nd ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A troubling situation takes a positive turn and moves toward a resolution that should please you and your supporters. Meanwhile, make time to deal with new domestic issues. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to reassess your goals and consider shifting directions. Remember to keep an open mind, and be prepared to make changes as new opportunities arise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Rely on your strong Mercury aspect to help you close that communication gap before it becomes too wide to cross. A sibling or other family member has news. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You’re about to get off that emotional roller coaster and start experiencing more stability than you’ve been used to. This is a good time to let someone new into your life. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Good news: A trusted friend comes through for you. But you still need to shed that last scrap of self-doubt and once more become the cool, confident Cat we all know and love. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Things should be getting back to a less hectic pace. Enjoy the more peaceful atmosphere. You earned it. But don’t forget about those still-unresolved issues. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A more positive family relationship develops as misunderstandings are explained away. A job situation appears promising, but check it out before you act on it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Congratulations. That on-the-job situation is working out as you’d hoped. Now’s a good time to relax and to enjoy the company of family and close friends. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might feel as if you’re caught in an emotional tug-of-war. But don’t be rushed into a decision on either side. Wait for more facts before you act. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat’s usually high level of selfconfidence is brimming over these days. This should help you deal with a situation that you’ve avoided for far too long. Go for it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Relationships become more intense. But be careful not to be pushed into decisions you’re not comfortable with. Remember: You’re the one in charge of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You need to show more confidence in your ability to reach your goals. Make that longdelayed decision, and avoid floundering around in a sea of self-doubt. Know Your Investment Risks and How to Respond
Dustin Friend
When you invest, you take some risks. While you can’t totally avoid these risks, you can take steps to help reduce their impact and increase your comfort level. And the more comfortable you are with your investments, the easier it will be to follow a long-term strategy that can help you meet your goals.
Let’s look at the most common types of risk related to investing, along with some suggestions on helping to reduce these risks: Losing principal — This type of risk is most closely associated with investing. For example, when you purchase a stock, you know that its value could go up or down. If it drops below your purchase price, and you then sell your shares, you will lose some of your principal. Your response — You can’t eliminate the risk of losing principal, but by owning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other types of investments, you can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Losing value when interest rates change — This type of risk primarily affects fixed-income investments, such as bonds. If you purchase a bond that pays, say, a 4% interest rate, and the market rate goes up to 5%, then the value of your bond will drop because no one will be willing to pay you the full price for it when newer, higher-yielding bonds are available. Your response — You can combat, or even ignore, interest rate risk by holding your bonds until they mature. By doing so, you’ll get your full principal back, provided the issuer doesn’t default, and you’ll continue to receive regular interest payments unless the bonds are “called,” or repurchased by the issuer. (You can help protect against this by purchasing bonds that have some degree of “call protection” and by owning bonds with different maturities.) Losing purchasing power — This risk largely applies to fixed-rate investments such as certificates of deposit (CDs). To illustrate: If you purchase a CD that pays 2%, and the inflation rate is 3%, you are actually losing purchasing power. Your response — Despite their vulnerability to inflation, CDs can offer you some valuable benefits, such as preservation of principal. Yet if you are concerned about fighting inflation, you may want to look for investments than have the potential to offer rising income, such as dividend-paying stocks. In fact, you can find stocks that have increased their dividends for many consecutive years. (Be aware, though, that companies can reduce or eliminate dividends at any ...continued on next column

time. Also, an investment in stocks fluctuates, and you could lose your principal.) Apart from these individual techniques to reduce investment-related risk, you should also save early and save often — because the more money you accumulate, the greater your ability to follow a long-term strategy that reflects your personal risk tolerance. That’s why it’s a good idea to contribute as much as possible over the years to your IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. By understanding the different types of investment risk, and by acting to help lessen them, you can reduce much of the stress sometimes associated with investing — while you increase your prospects for achieving your objectives. By Samantha Weaver ¥ It was American ventriloquist and comedian Willie Tyler who made the following sage observation: “The reason lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place is that the same place isn’t there the second time.” ¥ Even flight attendants have their own patron saint, as declared by Pope Paul XXIII in 1962: Saint Bona of Pisa. ¥ Many people believe that the Gutenberg Bible, which came from the presses of Johannes Gutenberg in the 1450s, is the first example of a printed book, but that’s not true; it’s the first book printed using movable type. The oldest known printed book is actually the “Diamond Sutra,” which was printed in China more than 550 years before the Gutenberg Bible. ¥ In many Middle Eastern cultures, it is traditional to celebrate a wedding with five events. The first is the engagement party, during which the bride-to-be changes clothes several times. When the bride and groom sign the marriage contract there is another party, again with numerous changes of clothing by the bride. The day before the wedding there is a henna party, during which the bride and others are painted with elaborate designs that are thought to ward off evil spirits. The reception takes place after the wedding, and guests are often given five almond pieces, each piece symbolizing one of the sacred wedding wishes: health, happiness, wealth, longevity and fertility. Seven days after the wedding is the final celebratory event, known as sabaa, which is for women only and is analogous to the wedding shower we have in the West. ¥ The town of North Pole, Alaska, is actually 1,700 miles south of the planet’s geographical North Pole. *** Thought for the Day: “The nice thing about egotists is that they don’t talk about other people.” -- Lucille S. To Crate or Not to Crate? Q: What’s your view of kennel cages? My wife hates the idea of using one to train our dog Sandy, but I disagree. What do you say? -- Jerry in Las Cruces, N.M. A: I’m personally OK with the concept of crating (or “kennel cages”). It’s an effective way to housetrain a puppy (who won’t soil a sleeping or living area) and teaches it to stay comfortable and relaxed in a similar container, the travel crate, which is essential to traveling with your dog. However, I do see frequent instances where the crate is misused, with negative consequences for dog and owner alike. The crate also serves as a home or den for your dog. So it always has to be seen by Sandy as a safe place to be, perhaps the safest place in the house for her. If you use the crate to punish Sandy, such as shutting her up in it when she’s being hyperactive or disobedient, she could associate it with negative feelings and avoid going into it. I recommend you learn as much as you can about using the crate to train Sandy. The American Dog Trainers Network has a list of tips on furnishing the crate, getting her to accept it and using it as a positive training tool. Find the list here: http://www.inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html. It also includes important safety tips, such as always removing Sandy’s collar before putting her into the crate, and making sure she’s not left in an environment that’s too hot or freezing cold. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have never seen you address acupuncture. I have had a bad back for three months, have seen two doctors and have followed their instructions. I have taken medicines that ease the pain. My back isn’t as sore as it once was, but it still bothers me. Acupuncture has been suggested. What are your views on it? -- M.L. ANSWER: I have no misgivings about trying acupuncture for pain relief. The Chinese have used it for centuries. Any treatment that lasts that long must have some value. Fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points and are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. From time to time, the acupuncturist stimulates the needles. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society endorse acupuncture. A recent review article in the New England Journal of Medicine, a premier medical journal, also endorsed it. Who am I not to follow suit? Back pain strikes almost everyone at some point in life. The booklet on it discusses its causes and treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: It’s that time of year again -- the no-see-um season. I can feel a sharp sting when bitten. It goes away and then returns as a large swelling with incessant itching. What can I do to prevent this reaction? Others don’t react this bad. I also use DEET to deter these diabolical pests. Should I wash it off as soon as I get indoors? -- C.R. ANSWERS: No-see-ums got that name because they’re barely visible, only 1/16th of an inch. Dawn and dusk are their busiest hours. Avoidance is the best protection. The red welt you describe arises about 12 or more hours after the bite and can be as large as an inch in diameter. It does itch. DEET is the best repellent, but it’s not a 100 percent barrier for all users. Have you tried a higher concentration? Are you following label directions regarding when to reapply it? When you get back home, wash treated skin with soap and water. Also, you can spray your clothes with permethrin. It will give you additional protection. Wear long slacks tucked into your socks and long-sleeved tops. As for the itch, antihistamines are suggested. I admit they don’t work for everyone. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. There are a million reasons to WALK...
¥ To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I did this on his workbench too. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled the hardware out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas

¥ Our family loves to make our own pizza, and we purchase dough from a pizzeria. On pizza nights, I pick up the dough first thing on the way home from work. I get it close to where I work and let it sit in a bowl in the car while I pick up the kids and drive home. It takes about 45 minutes, so it’s risen nicely while we’ve been on the go. -- E.F. in New York

¥ If you’ve just purchased an expensive electronic item, take the packaging to a recycling center rather than advertise your purchase by putting the box at the curb. If you aren’t able to take it somewhere, cut the box into uniform pieces and bind them together, nonprinted side facing out.
