by Kathy Wolfe Are you left-handed? Then August 13 is your day! In honor of Left Handers’ Day, Tidbits is studying up data on these special folks. • It’s estimated that about 10% of the population is left-handed. But while many are considered left-handed, very few are 100% left-handed, because they perform many tasks right-handed, such as golf or batting a ball. In contrast, the percentage of “righties” who are 100% right-handed is very high. • People are left- or right-handed due to an unequal distribution of motor skills, and handedness is determined by which hand is more dexterous when performing tasks. Lefties use the right side of their brains, and right-handers operate in the left hemisphere. • Infants have usually developed hand preference by six months of age. Some babies show a preference for one hand while still in the womb, which can be seen by observing which hand is predominantly held close to the mouth. Ultrasounds reveal that 90% of the unborn favor their right thumb. Research suggests that premature babies and those who have experienced trauma during gestation are more likely to be left-handed. There’s also a link to mothers who are over 40 – they are 128% more likely to have a left-handed baby than a woman in her 20s. Turn the page for more!

By Taylor Stevens (Crown Publishers, $24) Reviewed by Rose McAllister Croke

In Taylor Stevens’ latest thriller, “The Doll,” readers are once again thrown headlong into the sinister world of “information specialist” Vanessa “Michael” Munroe. Best described as a lethal hybrid between Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, Lisbeth Salander and Sydney Bristow, motorcycle enthusiast and language expert Munroe is kidnapped and thrust inside the underground world of human trafficking and sex slaves. She is taken to Central Europe -Croatia and Slovenia -- where she must outsmart and outmaneuver a creepy, morally bankrupt and deadly figure known only as “the Doll Maker.” Captured to repay a debt to an unknown enemy who is bent on revenge and retribution, Munroe is offered a Hobson’s Choice deal: deliver merchandise in the form of a high-value

young woman in order to keep her closest friend, Logan, alive. If she succeeds, she will all but guarantee the young woman’s demise. If she fails, Logan will die. In order to save the one person she loves, Munroe is pitted against not only the trafficking organization, but also against the worst aspects of herself. Instead of being the rescuer, Munroe is now the victim -- a role she is neither comfortable nor emotionally adept at playing. Scarred from a life of violence and plagued by her own demons, Munroe is a complex character on a near-impossible quest. Stevens has written an ambitious novel, complete with two stories, two different plot lines, two different sets of characters in two separate time zones. The dual plot lines zipper together seamlessly and deliver both an epic finale and terrifying look into the seedy and unimaginable world of human trafficking. Fans of the movies, “Taken” and “Lara Croft,” will enjoy the high-octane read that Taylor Stevens capably provides in “The Doll.” (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

LEFTIES (continued): • Left-handedness appears to be an inherited trait. Left-handed members of the British royal family include the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Prince William. But if both parents of a child are left-handed, there is only a 26% chance that the child will be as well. • About 1% of the world’s adults are equally skilled with both hands and are dubbed ambidextrous. Other people are awkward with both hands and are said to be ambisinister or ambilevous. • There is no definitive answer as to why handedness exists. Many studies have been conducted in an attempt to identify characteristics shared by left-handers. Research indicates that they have unusually good visual-spatial skills. Creativity, music, perception, emotions, and spatial awareness are controlled by the right side of the brain. This makes lefties good architects, artists, mathematicians, and musicians. Consider that Albert Einstein, Mozart, Beethoven, Leonardo da Vinci, and Henry Ford were all left-handed. Four out of the five designers of the original Macintosh computer were lefties as well. • University studies suggest there are more lefties with an IQ over 140 than right-handed people, a list that includes Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Benjamin Franklin. A study of 100,000 students taking the SAT test revealed that 20% of the top-scoring group were lefties, twice the rate of left-handedness in the general population. • There also seems to be a connection with athletic ability. About half of fencers are lefthanded. Tennis greats Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, and Rod Laver are lefties, and we can’t deny the talent of baseball southpaws Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Reggie Jackson. continues on page 8 1. In 1960, three top-10 songs had the name of the same American city in the title. What city was it? Bonus: Name the three songs. 2. What artist wrote and released “Just the Way You Are.” 3. Who wrote and recorded “Loves Me Like a Rock”? 4. How did “Badge” get its title? 5. Sixties songs were known for lyrics that strained to rhyme, but one song carried that to the extreme. Identify the song and artist of this lyric: “Once I had a pretty girl, her name it doesn’t matter, She went away with Answers another guy, now he won’t even look at her.” in Back☺

HOLLYWOOD -Ava Gardner was one of the most beautiful women in movies. Frank Sinatra (her third husband) loved her until the day he died. When she fell ill, he paid all her bills. A new book, “Ava Gardner: The Secret Conversations,” written with ghost writer Peter Evans (who never completed the book), will soon hit bookshelves. Ava stopped work on the book many times, but kept returning to it because of money problems. To her, sex was “being good in the feathers,” death was “pushing around the clouds,” and of herself she said, “I made movies, I made out, and I made a mess of my life.” She explains why she tried to kill Howard Hughes with an onyx ashtray; turned down playing Mrs. Robinson

in “The Graduate,” and why Mickey Rooney (her first husband) was both a midget and a great lover. She describes, in depth, her stormy times with Frank Sinatra. Ava died in 1990, and ghost writer Evans died in 2012. His editor, Ed Victor pulled it all together and made the book a bestseller in England. When Ava filmed “Earthquake” in downtown L.A., I was invited to meet her. Unfortunately, I had poison oak all over my face from a shoot I did in the woods. Ava looked at my blistering nose and said, “That’ll teach you to put your nose in other people’s business.” I laughed so hard at her joke, we be-

This Artery Disease Is Pain in the Leg DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Since January, when I made a New Year’s resolution to be more active, I have been walking daily, seven days a week. In the past month, I have pushed to walk farther and faster. I began to have pain in my right calf, so I had to slow it down again. Does this sound like arthritis to you? It runs in my family. -- B.R.

riding in the car directly behind JFK, accidentally shot the president. It claims Hickey was out partying the night before with other Secret Service agents, and upon hearing the first shot (allegedly by Oswald) grabbed his gun to return fire. When the car stopped suddenly, he accidentally discharged his weapon ... making him the second shooter. How come this never came out before? Oswald died at the hands of Jack Ruby, rumored to be a CIA operative, before going to trial, and every witness to JFK’s shooting died within a year of that event. Strange that George Hickey’s so-called accident comes to light now, two years after his death when he can’t talk. Makes you wonder what else has been covered up?

ANSWER: It sounds more like peripheral artery disease, PAD, a condition that 5 percent of adults over 40 and 20 percent of those over 70 have. Peripheral artery disease is the same process that occurs in heart arteries, an obstruction to blood flow due to the buildup of cholesterol and fat on the artery wall. In the heart, it causes the chest pain of angina when a person engages in physical activity. In the legs, it causes pain in the buttocks, thighs, calves or feet when a person walks farther than usual or faster than usual. The leg muscles are not getting the amount of blood they need to support such exertion. An

easy test, done in the doctor’s office, provides solid evidence for the diagnosis of PAD. That test entails taking blood pressure in the arm and comparing it with blood pressure in the leg. The name of the test is the Ankle-Brachial Index, dividing the ankle pressure by the arm pressure. A number less than 0.9 denotes peripheral artery disease. Taking the ankle blood pressure requires a special instrument, one that’s not available to the general public. Most doctors have it. PAD is treated much like plugged heart arteries are treated. Keep up your walking program, and do try to increase the length and pace of your walk. Stop to rest if pain occurs, then resume walking when it leaves. Your doctor will decide if you need a medicine like Pletal (cilostazol). For large

Glitter cleanup can be a hassle. Here’s my tip for getting it up quickly with no mess left behind: Use play dough. Just press it into the stray glitter, and it will pick the glitter right up. Then, you’ve created Glitter Dough! Oh, your kids will be impressed. Here are some more kid tips. -- JoAnn Can’t seem to part with those baby blankets now that the kids are not babies anymore? Don’t! Sew them into floor pillow covers and watch the kids get a few more years out of them. “My daughter is old enough to play on our street with her friends, but not necessarily old enough for a cellphone. Instead, we repurposed a set of walkie talkies. Her boundary is in walkie-talkie range, and we can communicate. Plus, it’s just fun!” -- T.F. in Maryland “Our friends who live in an apartment have a great storable-sandbox solution. They use

obstructions, procedures similar to ones used to open heart arteries (balloon dilation, grafts, stents) are used for PAD. Also important is an examination of your heart’s circulation. People with PAD often also have coronary artery disease (CAD), plugged heart arteries. The booklet on peripheral artery disease provides the details of this common condition. a plastic underthe-bed storage bin filled with sand and toys. It has a lid and can be stored easily on their balcony. The kids still get to play in the sand, even on rainy days.” -- W. in Kentucky “I saw this idea in a magazine somewhere, and now I make them for other moms and dads as they are cute and functional: Make a cell-number beaded bracelet your kids can wear when you go out. Little kids may not remember Mommy’s cell phone number, but they can bring the bracelet to a store employee and ask him or her to call the number on the bracelet. Use elastic thread and colorful number beads.” -P.S. in Oregon Using a 1/4inch hole punch, which you can get at a hardware store for cheap, it’s easy to make a straw hole in the plastic tops of kids’ single-serving drinks, like milk and water bottles. Less chance of a spill. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475 or e-mail JoAnn at heresatip@yahoo. com. stars with such hair, but my hair doesn’t grow longer than my shoulders. Is there a vitamin or medicine that promotes hair growth? -- V.T. ANSWER: Hair growth is something that is programmed in every individual. The majority of people have a two-year hair-growth cycle. Such a cycle permits hair to grow to shoulder length. A few people have a six-year cycle. These are the people whose hair grows to the waist and even farther. I wish I had better news for you. I don’t. Big Little Book Q: I have a Big Little Book, “Dick Tracy’s Chains of Crime.” It is from the 1930s and except for a few scuffs, in good condition. I have a friend wanting to buy it from me, but I have no idea of what it is worth. -- Steve, New Paltz, N.Y. A: I found your Big Little Book referenced in several price guides. It was published in 1936, and current values range from $30 to $130 depending on condition. *** Q: I recently inherited an oblong dish, a cake plate and a pair of candlesticks in the Canterbury pattern made by Duncan & Miller glassware. I know nothing about this company and hope you can provide me with at least some information. -- Barbara, Tyler, Texas A: George Duncan founded the company in about 1865 in Pittsburgh. The firm became known as Duncan & Miller in 1900, but eventually was absorbed by the United States Glass Company. Many of the older designs continued to be manufactured. The Canterbury pattern was extremely popular. Your cake plate is probably worth about $25; the candlesticks, $30; and oblong relish dish, perhaps $50.

Q: A while back you mentioned “Witches of East End” was going to be a series on Lifetime, and I wondered if you had any more information on it? I loved the book, so I am curious about the series. -- Annette D. in Connecticut A: Lifetime recently announced a premiere date for its newest drama, which features an all-star cast headlined by Emmy Award-winner Julia Ormond, Madchen Amick, Jenna Dewan Tatum and Rachel Boston as a family of witches living in the secluded seaside town of East Haven. “Witches of East End” will cast its spell beginning Sunday, Oct. 6, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Also set to star are Eric Winter, Daniel DiTomasso, Jason George and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Virginia Madsen. As you mentioned, the series is inspired by Melissa de la Cruz’s best-selling novel “Witches of East End,” and centers on the mysterious Beauchamp family: Joanna (Ormond) and her two grown daughters: Freya (Dewan Tatum) and Ingrid (Boston), both of whom are unaware that they are witches. Freya is recently engaged to the

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience with those who don’t keep up with you can cause resistance, which, in turn, can lead to more delays. Best to be helpful and supportive if you want results. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A surprise announcement from a colleague could put you on the defensive. Gather your facts and respond. You’ll soon find the situation shifting in your favor. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Time spent away from a project pays off with a new awareness of options you hadn’t considered before. Weigh them carefully before deciding which to choose. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Consider confronting that personal conflict while there’s still time to work things out. A delay can cause more problems. A longtime colleague might offer to mediate. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some emerging matters could impede the Lion’s progress in completing an important project. Best advice: Deal with them now, before they can create costly delays. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your aspect continues to favor an expanding vista. This could be a good time to make a career move, and taking an out-of-town job could be a good way to do it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Disruptive family disputes need to be settled so that

everyone can move on. Avoid assuming this burden alone, though. Ask for -no, demand -- help with this problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience is called for as you await word on an important workplace situation. A personal circumstance, however, could benefit by your taking immediate action. S A G I T TA R I U S (November 22 to December 21) Don’t lose confidence in yourself. Those doubters are likely to back off if you demand they show solid proof why they think your ideas won’t work. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A temporary setback might cause the usually surefooted Goat some unsettling moments. But keep going. The path ahead gets easier as you move forward. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There’s welcome news from the workplace. There also could be good news involving a relationship that has long held a special meaning for you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to cut some lingering ties to a situation that no longer has the appeal it once held. In the meantime, you can start to explore other opportunities. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of what’s right can inspire others if you remember not to push too hard to make your case. Don’t Get Tricked on Obamacare We’ve all heard about the coming “Obamacare,” the new Affordable Care Act that will provide health insurance. The scammers have heard about it too, and are taking advantage of all the confusion -especially with seniors. Here are some tricks that scammers might try to use on you: --You might get a phone call saying you can be one of the first to get your new health insurance card -- if you’ll

provide certain information. --You might be told that it’s illegal not to sign up for the insurance and that you must give your personal information or you could go to jail. --You could be told that your Medicare information has to be verified and updated, or it will be canceled. They might ask for an “upfront” fee to help you sort it all out. --The scammers might try to sell you a health policy as a way of getting your credit card or bank numbers. These are all lies. The sharpies are trying to trick you into revealing your bank-account information, your Social Security number, your credit-card numbers, your address and your Medicare card number. Even if they say they’re from “the government,” and even if they do have some of your informa-

Here are a few of the facts: --If you’re already signed up with Medicare, you don’t have to sign up for Obamacare. --Others who have to sign up for the insurance can start signing up in October, with it taking effect next January. KEEP TAKING THOSE MEDS (YOU KNOW YOU NEED ‘EM) BY MICHAEL ROIZEN, M.D., AND MEHMET OZ, M.D.

It’s a tough pill to swallow -- apparently. Seventy-five percent of North Americans don’t take their much-needed meds as directed or skip them entirely. And almost 15 percent of folks 40-plus with chronic medical conditions get a failing grade for mismanagement of important medication! This matters -- big time. One study of people on high blood pressure medication found skipping doses boosts the risk for deadly strokes two- to five-fold. But only about half of you take those meds as prescribed. Another example: If you’ve had a heart attack or other cardio event and you have recently stopped taking clot-blocking, low-dose aspirin (many of you have), you raise your odds for a nonfatal heart attack 60 percent. And it’s estimated that up to half of folks on statins don’t take them regularly or at all, denying themselves protection from heart attack and (new info) some cancers. But heart-related meds aren’t the only ones that go untaken. Only 30 percent of teenagers stick with their asthma-control regimen, with potentially lethal consequences. And most startling, less than 2 percent of adults with diabetes do regular blood-glucose monitoring, take their medications as prescribed and follow recommended dietary guidelines. That leads to a roster of complications, including cardiovascular disease, neuropathy (nerve pain or numbness), blindness, amputation and kidney disease, not to mention impotence and brain dysfunction. Solution No. 1: Slash the cost. You may not take your meds because they are too expensive, but boycotting them can seriously increase your long-term health expenses. Talk to your doc about taking generics -- the health-giving benefits are generally the same as brand-name drugs (only a few are known to not work for some people), but the price tag is 30 percent to 80 percent lower. Use the website Pharmahelper.com to find trustworthy online drugstores;

7

they can be cheaper. But stay away from online cut-rate, outof-North-America pill pushers. And if you have health insurance with drug coverage, chances are the company offers mail-order pharmacy services that are cheaper than if you go to the corner chain store for your monthly prescription. Also, ask your doc if you’re taking the most affordable drug for your condition. It’s a conversation just 1 in 20 people have! And take advantage of coupons, rebates and special assistance programs by checking with NeedyMeds at www.needymeds.org and Partnership for Prescription Assistance at www.pparx.org. Solution No. 2: Set up a reminder system. Using a pillbox with compartments for each daily dose can also increase your success 58 percent. Or invest in electronic caps for your pill bottles. They light up, play a tune or send a phone call, text or email alert when it’s time for your next dose. Solution No. 3: Talk about side effects. Ask your doc about the range of potential side effects with different drugs -- you may be able to switch from one drug to another until you discover the one with the least disruptive side effects. Solution No. 4: Be inspired. You can’t feel the benefits of many important medications -- like those for thinning bones and high cholesterol. So track your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers to get proof the meds are working. You’ll be more motivated to do the right thing. Solution No. 5: Simplify. Still feel like your medicine schedule is too complicated? Talk with your doctor and pharmacist about streamlining it so that you can take medications less often during the day. (Don’t do this on your own!) Pharmacists are a very knowledgeable and underutilized resource. Solution No. 6: Write a do-it-yourself Rx. A stellar diet, regular exercise and weight loss might let you reduce your dose or go off your meds. Start loading your plate with produce, whole grains and lean proteins. Replace fatty meats and whole dairy with good fats, such as olive and canola oil and nuts. Take a 30-minute walk every day. Get plenty of sleep, and slash stress. After a month or two, see your doc for a follow-up. We bet your test results will be worth celebrating. *** Mehmet Oz, M.D. is host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” and Mike Roizen, M.D. is Chief Wellness Officer and Chair of Wellness Institute at Cleveland Clinic. presents

Because the left hemisphere of the brain controls speech, language, and writing, lefties controlled by the right side of the brain are more likely to be dyslexic, stutter, and have autism. They also process emotions differently than righties and are more prone to negative emotions, such as anger. In the physical realm, lefties seem to have more allergies, migraines, and insomnia. And since the right side of the brain has a lower tolerance for alcohol, left-handed people are more likely to become alcoholics. • Being left-handed has had negative connotations for centuries. In the 17th century, lefties were thought to be witches and warlocks, and black magic is often referred to as the “left-hand path.” But Incas believed that left-handers possessed magical abilities and could perform healing. If you receive a “lefthanded compliment,” it is deemed unflattering. The Bible mentions the right hand 100 times, all in a positive light, while the left hand is mentioned 25 times, all negatively. The English language even derives the word “sinister,” which means threatening or menacing, from the Latin word sinistra, which can mean either “left” or “unlucky.” • Even folklore seems to paint lefties in a bad light. If your right palm itches, legend has it that you’ll be coming into some money, but if the left one itches, you’ll be paying money out. A twitch in your right eye means you’ll soon be seeing a friend, while a twitching left eye denotes an enemy on the way. A ringing in your right ear says someone is praising you, while a ringing left ear means someone is cursing you. Going on a trip in the near future? An itching right foot promises a pleasant journey, but if your left foot itches, the trip is going to be a bad one.

Q: We’re moving across the country soon, and for the first time can afford to have a moving company load and carry our furniture for us. However, I’ve heard horror stories on the news and from acquaintances that I could be cheated or have to pay much more than the original quote. Should I go with a moving company anyway? -- Bill S., Los Angeles A: There have been occasional press reports about movers that charge homeowners much more than the original quote. This isn’t always the case, but as with any business transaction, a little caution goes a long way. As with any contractor job, you should get multiple quotes from several different moving companies -- at least three. A flat rate or blind estimate made over the phone should not be accepted; the moving company should send a representative to your home to find out exactly how much furniture, boxes and other items are

being moved, what items need special attention and so on. You should get a quote in writing, and don’t agree to it before you’ve gotten estimates from the other companies. To find out how well a moving company does its job, you have a number of options today. The Better Business Bureau is a fair starting point -- you can read complaints about the company, as well as whether they’ve been resolved. For national companies, look at websites like Consumerist. com, which posts reader complaints and attempts to resolve or at least get an explanation about an issue from the companies involved. In major metro areas, you can check review sites like Yelp.com. While these don’t usually have an area where companies can respond to complaints or disputes, you can get a general feel for the company and how it conducts business by the number and types of reviews. Once you’ve selected a moving company, be sure to read all the fine print before signing a moving agreement. Ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable, particularly about extra costs that are mentioned in the agreement. HOME TIP: Consider purchasing relocation insurance during a move to cover potential accidents or damage to items while they’re in transit. Send your questions or home tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com. Cool Ideas With Ice Ice is nice when it’s hot outside. Nothing’s more refreshing than a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade or iced tea with a sprig of mint on top for a reprieve from the heat. And who doesn’t love a slushie or snow cone while strolling in flipflops at an amusement park or on a boardwalk when the temps soar. Here are more icy ideas for a hot summer day to keep kids busy, creative and most of all, cool. COOL “ICE BEAD” NECKLACE This ice necklace is refreshing on a hot day whether indoors or out. Open a standard cotton bandana, fold in half, and set ice cubes in a horizontal r o w a few inches from the fold. Carefully roll the bandana to contain the cubes in the row, tie around your neck, and head outside to play and pick veggies in the garden. Or, simply soak a cotton bandana in cold water, ring it out so it is moist and not dripping, and pop it in the freezer. Wear it around your neck outdoors for a hike or bike ride. COOL RINK FOR PLAYTIME FUN Fill a rimmed cookie sheet or rectangular cake pan with water and freeze. Unmold and set the large ice sheet outside on a picnic table, porch or kid’s activity table. Grab some mini toy penguins, polar bears

or Lego characters and let them skate around the “rink” until it melts. COOL GAME TO BEAT THE HEAT Make ice cubes for each player. (For older kids and adults, use larger chunks of ice made in pintsize milk cartons.) The object of the game is to see who can melt his or her ice cube first. The ice must be touching the player’s body at all times until it’s completely melted. But you can’t put it in your mouth! COOL ICE-CUBE PAINTING Mix water and tempera paint in tiny bowls to desired shade. Pour into ice cube trays. Or, mix directly in ice cube tray compartments. Freeze u n t i l slushie, and then add icecream sticks, wooden skewers or toothpicks for handles. They can stand at an angle. Freeze solid. Pop “paint cubes” out and use to draw colorful pictures on heavy white drawing paper until the ice melts. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Pizza Squared I was planning dinner and thinking about how I could transform some leftover, grilled chicken sausages and bell peppers into another meal. Then it hit me, pizza! Dinner dilemma solved. I decided to slice the sausages, chop up the peppers, combine them with some mild salsa and cheeses, and use it as a topping for homemade, deep-dish pizza. Pizza has been pleasing taste buds for a very long time. In prehistoric times, people baked large pieces of bread on flat cooking stones. Later, in Italy, these flat pieces of bread were spiced up with herbs and called focaccia bread. Italians still love to eat focaccia as an appetizer or snack. This snack was handy because you didn’t need utensils, and it could be seasoned with extra scraps of food and fresh produce. When Europeans came to the New World, they were introduced to tomatoes, which they then took back to their home countries. The Italians needed something a little different to add to their bread-filled diet, and the people of Naples were the first to put tomatoes on focaccia bread. At first, no one wanted to use tomatoes because they thought this delicious red fruit was poisonous! The world’s first pizzeria opened in 1830 in Port’Alba in Naples. Pizzas were baked in an oven lined with lava from a local volcano! The first pizza delivery occurred in 1889 when an Italian restaurant owner was asked to create a special dish for the guest of honor, Queen Margherita Teresa Giovanni. He wanted to include the colors of the Italian flag in his dish to honor the queen, so he added tomatoes (red), mozzarella cheese (white), and basil (green) to focaccia bread. The restaurant owner named this meal the Margherita Pizza, using part of the guest of hon-

or’s name along with part of the name of his restaurant -- Pietro II Pizzaiolo. The pizza was delivered to the palace because the queen did not want to travel to the restaurant! In 1905, Gennaro Lombardi opened the first American pizzeria in New York City, and it is still there today. However, pizza did not become popular until after World War II, when war veterans stationed in Italy returned home craving the pizza they had eaten there. Soon, pre-made pizza pie mixes, frozen pizza and pizzeria chains sprang up around the country. Today, pizza is one of the most popular and delicious foods in the world! More pizza facts: --Pizza Hut is the largest pizza company in the world. --The world’s largest pizza measured 123 feet in diameter, and was baked in South Africa in 1990. --The world’s largest pizza order came from the VF Corporation in North Carolina, which ordered 13,386 pizzas for its 40,160 employees nationwide. --October is National Pizza Month. --Kids between ages 3 to 11 prefer pizza to all other foods for dinner. --Three of the top 10 weeks of pizza consumption occur in January. More pizza is consumed during Super Bowl week than any other week of the year. --62 percent of Americans prefer meat toppings on their pizza, while 38 percent prefer vegetarian pizza. --Mozzarella cheese was originally made from the milk of water buffalo! Using convenience products like pre-made pizza crusts or boxed crust mixes make creating this recipe for Savory Pizza Squares for a weeknight or weekend pizza party an easy task. SAVORY PIZZA SQUARES

• Further superstitions say that if your left foot hits the floor first when you get out of bed, you’ll have a bad day. And be careful at wedding receptions! Some swear that giving a toast with your left hand is the same as placing a curse on the people you’re toasting! • The world seems to be built for righthanders. Power tools and machinery are generally manufactured with a leaning toward right-handed users. The emergency on/off switch is usually placed in a location convenient to righties. Scissors and a computer mouse are designed with the righthander in mind. How many school desks are built for left-handers? Pick up a coffee mug with a novelty design on it, and you’ll see that the picture is placed for a righthanded pick-up. Those items specifically designed for lefties frequently cost more. On the bright side, some scientists believe that left-handers are more independent because they’ve had to adapt to a world built largely for righties. • Four out of the seven most recent U.S. Presidents have been left-handed – Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan was ambidextrous, but he was not the first president with this characteristic. The 20th president, James Garfield, was not only ambidextrous, he frequently entertained his friends by writing Greek with his left hand while writing Latin with his right. • There is one community in America where everyone is left-handed. Left Hand, West Virginia, population 390, can legitimately call all its residents “Left Handers.”

In fact, there is a bioluminescent patch of ocean to be found off the horn of Africa. “Patch” may not be quite the right word to describe it, though; the area that glows is the same size as the state of Connecticut. You might be surprised to learn that the sweatiest part of the human body is not the armpits; it’s the palms of the hands. *** Thought for the day: “I hate women because they always know where things are.” -- Voltaire (c) 2013 King Features Synd.,
