“Into the Abyss: An Extraordinary True Story” by Carol Shaben (Grand Central Publishing, $25) Reviewed by Larry Cox

Carol Shaben, an award-winning Canadian journalist, was working in the Middle East when she learned that her father had been in a plane crash. Six passengers aboard the 10-seat Navajo Chieftain were killed in the crash, including Grant Notley, leader of the New Democratic Party in Alberta, Canada. The four survivors huddled in deep snow and sub-zero temperatures before finally being rescued. Shaben’s father was one of the survivors. Later, after watching her father struggle to process the horrific event, she decided the only way to fully understand what had happened was to write about it. The result is a book that is guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats. It began on an icy night in October 1984. A small plane carrying nine passengers departed the High Prairie airport

in Alberta. Despite the dicey weather, the 24-year-old rookie pilot, Erik Vogel, was under pressure to complete the flight. Aboard was Carol’s father, Larry Shaben, Canada’s first Muslim Cabinet Minister. The passengers also included Constable Scott Deschamps and Paul Archbault, his prisoner who was shackled and in custody. Against regulations, Deschamps removed the handcuffs from his prisoner shortly before the ill-fated flight departed. Vogel was inexperienced, behind schedule and was concerned about the snow blowing across the tarmac. His job was on the line, and despite not having a co-pilot, he agreed to do the flight. About an hour after takeoff, the plane went down in the icy darkness. Through personal interviews with the survivors and her retelling and exploration of the events of that night, Shaben offers a rare insight into the minds and hearts of the four men who survived against insurmountable odds. For Shaben, the book was necessary so that she could make sense of the ordeal the survivors faced and ultimately make peace with her father. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

HARLEYS (continued): • Seventeen years after the first cycle rolled out of that wooden shed, Harley-Davidson was the largest motorcycle company in the world, with dealerships in 67 countries. Over 28,000 motorcycles were produced in 1920. • Of all the country’s motorcycle manufacturers in business in 1929, only Indian and Harley-Davidson were able to weather the stock market crash. Production at H-D dropped from 22,350 bikes to 3,703. Sales to police forces helped them survive the economy’s collapse. • H-D profited greatly from the use of their motorcycles during war time. Over 20,000 Harleys were used during World War I, and nearly 90,000 were put into service during World War II. • In 1946, foreign motorcycles hit the American market and the competition with British and Japanese bikes was fierce. British imports had a sportier appearance and were cheaper and more reliable. Favorable tax laws governing imports made these bikes even more attractive. Although HarleyDavidson introduced the Hydra-Glide with the Panhead engine in an attempt to compete, it was heavy and not as sporty. It didn’t take long for H-D’s market share to shrink to a mere 6% of the market. By 1950, 40% of the motorcycles in the U.S. were foreign-made. • Marlon Brando was 30 years old when he rode a British Triumph in the 1954 movie The Wild One, the story of a motorcycle gang terrorizing a small town. The film’s popularity did nothing to help the sales of Harleys. In an effort to combat the appeal

of British bikes, in 1957, H-D introduced the Sportster, considered “father of the superbikes.” continues on page 8 1. Which group released “Going Underground,” and what’s the song about? 2. HOLLYWOOD -Matt Damon, last seen on the small screen as Liberace’s boy toy in HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra,” will explode onto the big screen in three pictures before the year ends. August 9 will bring the $90 million sciencefiction epic “Elysium” with Jody Foster. The film is about a hightech utopian metropolis located in orbit around the Earth in the year 2154. “Elysium” began shooting in July 2011 in Vancouver and Mexico City, but like “World War Z,” needed some reshooting in October 2012. Damon shaved his head for this one. We’ll see Matt again starting Dec. 18 in “Monuments Men” with George Clooney, (who’s also producing with Grant Heslov, and directing), Os-

car-winner Cate Blanchett, John Goodman, Bill Murray, “The Artist” Oscar-winner Jean Dujardin and “Downton Abbey’s” Hugh Bonneville. Some of the World War II military scenes could reach epic proportions with a cast of thousands. Then on Dec. 20, Damon will hit screens in “The Zero Theorem,” yet another sci/fi film, with Oscar-winners Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton. Damon has been itching to find the right project to direct, not to be outdone by his good friend Ben Affleck. ** Bet you didn’t know that Tom Cruise passed on playing Tony Stark in the “Iron

Diabetic Diet Can be Daunting DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What should I eat with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol? All the advice I get tells me what I cannot eat -- no potatoes, no bread, no crackers, no cereal, no fruit. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I don’t know what to eat. -- C.L. Man” franchise? Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage wanted the role, but producers passed, so he starred in “Ghost Rider” instead. Quentin Tarantino was originally set to direct “Iron Man,” whose alter ego, Tony Stark, was based on the very rich and mysterious Howard Hughes, who was played by Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Aviator.” And finally, Rob-

John Stamos ert Downey, Jr. will play Tony Stark/Iron Man in “The Avengers 2 and 3.” But have no fears, since “Iron Man” only cost $200 million and grossed $1.2 billion, there undoubtedly will be an “Iron Man 4.”

as restrictive as it once was. You can eat all the foods you mentioned. Sugar also can be eaten, something that was strictly prohibited in the past. You have to use it in moderation, and it’s best to save sugar calories for other carbohydrates by using artificial sweeteners. Weight reduction, if applicable to you, is the best way for you to control blood sugar. A 5 percent to 10 percent weight loss is a sure way to keep blood sugar where it should be. For high blood pressure, limit salt. You ought not to eat more than 1,500 mg a day of sodium. Read the sodium content of foods on their nutrition labels. For cholesterol control, cut back on fatty meats and whole-fat dairy products.

*** A Super Bowl commercial for Greek yogurt has stirred up a new career for John Stamos, whom we first met when he played Blackie Parrish on “General Hospital” in 1983. After “Full House,” Stamos played drums for The Beach Boys when they toured. He currently is going to produce a film about the popular California group with John Cusack as Brian Wilson and Paul Giamatti as his therapist. Stamos, who turns 50 on Aug. 19, also has been added to the cast of season three of USA’s “Necessary Roughness,” and will portray a playboy in the October release of “My Man Is a Loser.” Who’d ever think that yogurt would not only be good for a body, but also incredible for a career! (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

You can use low-fat dairy. Carbohydrates are an issue with diabetes. Carbohydrates are sugars and starches. They should constitute 50 percent to 55 percent of your total daily calories. Fruits (yes, you can eat them), vegetables, cereals, breads, crackers, pastas and similar foods are carbohydrates. You have to get a book that lists the calorie content of foods and their protein, fat and carbohydrate makeup. These guides are in all bookstores, and they’re cheap. Breakfast shouldn’t be a problem. You can drink orange juice if you like it, have cereal, have toast and drink coffee or whatever. You need a coach in the form of a dietitian. The dietitian can help you navigate through the difficulties of understanding a diabetic diet. Your doctor or the local hospital can put you in touch with one.

About five years ago, I had my spleen removed due to a traumatic injury. I was vaccinated with the pneumococcus vaccine. I was told that it would last a lifetime.

Does that apply to a person without a spleen? -- J.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an integral part of the immune system. People who don’t have one are more susceptible to infections and, in particular, to pneumococcal infections. The pneumococcus (NEW-moe-KOK-us) causes pneumonia and potentially lethal blood infections. People without a spleen need a second dose of the vaccine five years after the first dose. The pneumococcal vaccine is popularly called the pneumonia vaccine. ***

Inheritance Q: Due to a recent death, I have inherited a house filled with antiques and collectibles. Although I need to liquidate the estate, I have no idea of values. What do you suggest? -- Cynthia, Soulard, Mo. A: I went through this same situation when my mother died several years ago. She had lived in the same house for a number of decades and had filled it with almost everything imaginable. My sister and I were overwhelmed. We began by contacting and hiring a good certified appraiser so we had a better idea of what to keep, what to sell and what to discard. That is, perhaps, what you should do first. Don’t rely on a neighbor or someone who claims they know about antiques and collectibles, but a certified appraiser. The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is one of the leading groups in this country and can help you find certified professionals near you. Contact is 11109 Sunset Hills Rd., Suite 310, Reston, VA 20190, 800-2728358. To underscore the importance of hiring an appraiser, let me share a story. Several weeks ago, a reader contacted me with four

Q: I was a little hesitant about watching season six of “True Blood” because, in my opinion, it really jumped the shark last season. But I can say now that I am happy I stuck with it, because this season has been really good so far. Will there be a seventh season? -- AnnaMarie P., via e-mail A: HBO just announced that the vampire/werewolf/shapeshifter/fairy/witch drama will be back for a seventh season, which will premiere summer 2014. I recently spoke with a member of the Shreveport wolf pack -- Jamie Gray Hyder, who plays Alcide’s other girlfriend, Danielle -- and she too is excited about what the rest of the season has to offer. “There are some pretty big things that are going to go on that I don’t even know that much about,” Jamie told me. “If it’s a scene I’m not in, I don’t know what happens; I’m watching along with everyone else. But tensions are going to be heightened, and the stakes are going to continue to be raised. We’ve got the vampires versus

older rugs. She had been offered $1,500 for the four rugs but suspected they might be worth more. She hired an appraiser, who discovered the rugs were Navajo and from the 1920s. To cut to the chase, her rugs were valued at $35,000, not the $1,500 she had been offered. Although an appraisal is not free, it can be an extremely valuable investment in the long run. *** Q: I recently purchased a piece of Hull pottery at a yard sale. It is a 9-inch vase in the Mardi Gras pattern. What can you tell me about this pattern, and is it worth more than the $35 I paid for it. -- Betty, Tyler, Texas A: The vases were originally created for chain stores and florists, according to “Warman’s Hull Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by David Doyle. Most of the pieces I’ve seen are identified with a sticker, not the usual impression in the mold. Doyle believes your vase is valued in the $75 to $100 range, so if your piece is in good condition, you made a good buy. *** Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A longtime situation starts to move into a new phase. The question for the uncertain Lamb right now is whether to move with it. Facts emerge by midmonth to help you decide. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A talent for organizing your priorities allows the Divine Bovine to enjoy a busy social life and not miss a beat in meeting all workplace and/or family commitments. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) What began as a dubious undertaking has now become one of your favorite projects. Your enthusiasm for it rallies support from other doubtersturned-believers. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Accept the help of friends to get you through an unexpectedly difficult situation. There’ll be time enough later to investigate how all this could have happened so fast. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Change is a major factor for the Big Cat through midmonth. Be prepared to deal with it on a number of levels, including travel plans and workplace situations. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not like all the changes that have begun to take place around you. But try to find something positive in at least some of them that you can put to good use. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s unsettling experience

could create more problems if it’s not handled with care and love. And who’s the best one to offer all that? You, of course. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) It might not be the right time for you to start a new venture. But it’s a good time to start gathering facts and figures so you’ll be set when the GO! sign lights up. S A G I T TA R I U S (November 22 to December 21) The sagacious Sagittarius should have no trouble deciding between those who can and those who cannot be trusted to carry out a workplace commitment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Surprise, surprise. It looks as if that one person you once thought you could never hope to win over to your side suddenly just might choose to join you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might have to set aside your pride for now and accept a change that isn’t to your advantage. Cheer up. Exercise Study Is Game Changer Studies have shown that seniors need 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic exercise each week to help guard against heart disease and stroke, even diabetes. Previous guidelines said that we needed to have that moderate-intensity activity spread out over most days of the week. Researchers of a new study wanted to know whether it mattered how often we exercised, or it if was even important to get that exercise every

What they learned might be a game changer for many of us who don’t want to make exercise a daily event or even work out for long blocks of time: It doesn’t matter whether we do it all at once, or in small blocks of 10 minutes, or somewhere in between, as long as we get in our 150 minutes each week. They used more than 2,000 participants who agreed to wear accelerometers on their wrist to monitor their every move for a week. While the participants represented a wide range of ages, it was thought that the results applied to seniors, as the oldest participants were up to 79 years of age. On Aug. 11, 1856, a hurricane hits Isle Derniere, a resort community on the Louisiana coast, killing more than 400 people. The storm first brought blinding and torrential rain, then storm surges and finally a tidal wave. Upward of 150 people were carried off with the wave, with some bodies ending up 6 miles away. On Aug. 6, 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, the first execution in history by electrocution is carried out against William Kemmler. It didn’t go as planned. weight, had lower lousy LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, and ended up taking less high blood pressure medication, statins and insulin than members of the “good advice only” group. So the study (and the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Center programs) proves your risk for a whole roster of health problems goes down when you lose weight, control blood sugar and get regular exercise. You’ll see that life gets much better as your RealAge gets younger! Q: My sister just went through chemotherapy, and although it seemed to beat her cancer, the treatment almost killed her. Will there ever be a better way to fight cancer? -- Katie J., Gainesville, Fla. A: Chemotherapy is increasingly refined, and yet it still puts every patient through rough times. The good news is that often it’s extremely effective. Stage 1 breast cancer, for example, now has a five-year survival rate of almost 90 percent. But a new wave of treatments, called molecular targeted therapy, are around the corner, and for certain cancers some are here already. What they do, or try to do, is destroy only cancerous cells without harming any surrounding, healthy tissue. Herceptin -- a monoclonal antibody used to fight HER-2-positive breast cancer -- has been used for many years and is very effective (it cuts recurrence of breast cancer in half, compared with use of chemo alone), but it’s useful only against 20 percent of breast cancers. Imatinib, another monoclonal antibody, works on certain types of leukemia by shutting down pathways that cancer cells rely on to function. The latest effective targeted therapy, ibrutinib, is an oral “smart bomb” that works against chronic lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma by blocking a protein (kinase) that cancer cells need to thrive. Every year, there are more-sophisticated, individualized treatments available, and hopefully cancer treatment won’t always be so tough to go through. But we’re not just learning how to treat cancers more effectively. Using medications like aspirin, nutrients like DHA omega-3 fatty acid, foods like broccoli and vaccines like the one against HPV, we’re learning to PREVENT some cancers! Glad your sister’s OK. *** Mehmet Oz, M.D. is host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” and Mike Roizen, M.D. is Chief Wellness Officer and Chair of Wellness Institute at Cleveland Clinic. Q: I’m 60 pounds overweight and have type 2 diabetes. I want to get healthier, but I just read that it doesn’t matter what I do -- I’m still headed for heart problems. Is it really a waste to diet and exercise? -- Darlene F., Charlotte, N.C. A: What you read was about the Look AHEAD trial. And headlines like “ADA: Lifestyle Changes Don’t Protect Diabetic Heart” and “Weight Loss Fails To Prevent Heart Attacks For Diabetics In Study” make it sound like taking care of yourself is useless. The headlines could not be more WRONG. It matters a great deal if you diet, exercise, lose weight, decrease your waist size and take your meds so you keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. That slashes your risk for diabetic complications, such as amputation, blindness, kidney disease and stroke, not to mention other problems like cancer, depression and dementia. The lifestyle intervention programs at Dr. Mike’s Cleveland Clinic Wellness Center have seen powerful results from upgrading diet and increasing exercise: 90 percent of participants lose weight and achieve better glucose control; 60 percent take fewer medications; and 10 percent see a reversal in their diagnosis of diabetes! That makes them much healthier -- and happier! The Look AHEAD study may have been comparing two groups of obese participants with type 2 diabetes who reduced (or failed to reduce) the risk of heart disease equally. The so-called control group -- some of whom were taking statins and all of whom received counseling about managing diabetes -- may have taken that advice to heart (pun intended). They had results that were almost parallel to the “intervention group,” who were put on an upgraded diet and exercise routine and aimed to lose weight. In short, everybody benefited a little. The “diet and exercise” group did come out AHEAD in some respects: Distributed by King Features They shed 3 percent more Syndicate, Inc.

HARLEYS (continued): • The 1969 cult film Easy Rider featured Peter Fonda as Captain America riding a completely transformed H-D Electra-Glide with a Panhead engine. Four bikes were customized for the making of the film. Three were stolen before the movie was completed, and one burned. Fonda later restored the burned bike and today that chopper can be seen at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa. The Harleys ridden by the main characters in the film were purchased from the Los Angeles Police Department, as Harley-Davidson refused to provide free bikes for the movie. • The 1960s ushered in the customizing trend, but H-D failed to jump on the bandwagon in time. Their earnings faded, and the company was forced to go public, selling shares for the first time in 1965. In 1969, the family relinquished control of the business they had owned for 66 years, selling out to the American Machine and Foundry Company for $21 million. AMF, famous in the bowling industry, allowed the quality to slip considerably. Sales plummeted and by 1980, there seemed little chance of recovery for the company. In 1981, 13 senior H-D executives banded together and purchased the company from AMF for $80 million and the recovery began. In 1986, two million shares of common stock were offered, returning the company to public ownership. • There have been a number of “glides” throughout Harley history. The Hydra-Glide was introduced in 1949, with the first hydraulic front forks. This evolved into the Duo-Glide in 1958 with the addition of rear brakes and hydraulic rear suspension. The Electra-Glide came along with its electric starter motor in 1965, and on to the SuperGlide in 1971 and the Wide-Glide in 1980.

Adjusting a Pilot Light Q: I have an older gas furnace in my home upstairs that works very well, but I haven’t had it maintained it in a few years. I think the pilot light looks weak, but there’s no setting for a higher flame. How can I improve the pilot light flame? -- Nancy in Buffalo, N.Y. A: There is a way to control the height of the pilot light flame. Next to the “Pilot” indicator on the furnace’s control switch, there is a small screw located near the pilot lightthermocouple assembly. I’ll typically shine a small flashlight and use a magnifying glass to read the imprinted type on the control housing to make sure that’s the right screw. With the pilot light burning, use a Phillipshead screwdriver to carefully turn the screw one way and then the other, watching the pilot light to see if it gets stronger or weaker. The flame should be angling toward a nearby object that looks like a small vertical pipe: This is called the thermocouple, an important safety device. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple detects it and shuts the valve supplying gas to the pilot.

The pilot flame should touch the thermocouple at a specific level. If the flame is blue and weak, and barely reaches the thermocouple, it needs to be stronger. If it extends well above the thermocouple, it’s too strong. If the flame covers the top of the thermocouple and burns steadily with a yellow tip, that’s just about right. What if the pilot light won’t stay lighted? If the assembly looks OK, turn off the gas supply at the nearest valve and try heating the thermocouple using a match for about 30 seconds to a minute. Then relight the pilot. If that doesn’t work, replace the thermocouple by carefully unscrewing it from the control housing using an open-ended wrench, being careful not to ding or bend the supply pipe or the pilot-light assembly. Install a new thermocouple by screwing it in, heating it up a bit, and then lighting the pilot. Keep in mind that this task can be a little frustrating, because you’re almost always working in a cramped, hard-to-access spot. Be patient and take frequent breaks if necessary, rather than compromise safety or damage the unit. HOME TIP: Make sure you know exactly where the main shutoffs for your home’s gas, water and electrical supply are located, and that you know how to turn them off in an emergency. Big and Small ABC’s From a super-size “S” to a teeny tiny “T,” these oneof-a-kind, handson ABC’s make learning the alphabet creative and fun for the whole family. GIANT ABC’s Draw and cut out large block alphabet letters on 12-inch-by-12inch pieces of poster board, one for each letter. If you wish, you may start with just a few letters, such as the letters of your child’s name. Take the first letter you have cut out and tell your child that you are going to look for things that begin with the sound of that letter. Decorate the top of each letter by clipping pictures from magazines or collecting small items and gluing them to the corresponding letter. For example, glue leaves you collect on a fall walk to an “L,” buttons to a “B” and a real zipper on a “Z.” Apply a coat of lipstick to your child’s lips and let her smother the letter “K” with kisses. For the letter “J,” cut the letter into several pieces. Reattach the pieces with brass paper fasteners to make flexible joints. We covered our “J” with junk from the kitchen junk drawer! Or, go to your word-processing program on your computer, find your favorite font and print out letters the size of the squares. Look for creative fonts on programs specifically designed for scrapbooking or making stationery and greeting cards. Cut out and glue the printed letters to the squares. Decorate the handwritten or printed letters with craft supplies, small beads, buttons, ribbon, glitter, paints in squeeze bottles, or simply color them with crayons and markers. Attach a piece of selfsticking magnetic strip (available at hardw a r e and craft stores) on the back of each letter. Wrap Up a Quick Summer Meal Many of the world’s grilling cultures, from Asia to Central America, wrap foods in banana leaves for grilling. Use heavy-duty foil the same way -- to help seal in flavor and moistness. Here’s some great tips courtesy of Reynolds Wrap for using heavy-duty foil to make your summer grilling easier and tastier: --Make containers to heat beans, glazes or sauces on the grill with foil. Stack two sheets of foil. Flip over a saucepan, flat-bottom bowl or deep baking dish. Shape the double layer of foil over the base of the pan, bowl or dish. Remove the foil and crimp the edges to make a rim. Use a tray to transport to and from the grill. This same technique also can be used to make grilling containers for peppers, onions or seafood. --Foil drip pans are indispensible for soaking wood chips, marinating and indirect grilling. Make drip pans by molding Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty Foil over an inverted baking dish. --Shield foods by making a foil tent to help prevent them from overbrowning or drying out during grilling. --When grilling or roasting chicken, if the breast or wingtips brown too much, cover them with foil. Bones on pork chops, veal or rack of lamb can be covered with foil to help keep them from burning, too. --Sugar-based glazes and sauces will burn quickly and should be brushed on during the last 15 minutes of grilling. Use foil to make bowls (see first tip) so sauces and glazes can be kept within easy reach. Here are some fabulous recipes using Reynolds Wrap

• Harley has also had a variety of “heads” over the years. First there was the Flathead, dubbed as such because of the shape of the cylinder head cover. Introduced in 1929, it was a 45-cubic-inch side-valve engine. The Knucklehead, the first V-Twin model, debuted in 1936 with its cylinder covers shaped like clenched fists. It featured two fuel tanks with the instrument panel positioned between them. It was produced until 1947. Along came the Panhead in 1948 with aluminum cylinder covers resembling upside-down saucepans. Panheads were around until 1965. The next year brought the Shovelhead, whose cylinder covers looked like the back of a shovel. Compare the Shovelhead’s engine size of 74 cubic inches with that 1903 model’s 25 cubic inches! The year 1984 brought in the Blockhead, an 80-cubicinch engine. • The 1932 Harley-Davidson could be purchased for around $300. If you’re looking to buy a 2013 Electra-Glide CVO UltraClassic 100th Anniversary Edition, better set aside about $38,000. A new Sportster will set you back around $11,000. • For seven days every August, Main Street in Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,700, is packed with thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who gather to race and tour. The first rally was held in 1938, drawing nine racers and 200 spectators. The twoday rally offered $500 in prize money. Two years later, 150 racers participated in front of 5,000 onlookers. Close to 450,000 are expected for this year’s rally. • Harley-Davidson expects to ship about 260,000 motorcycles to dealerships during 2013.
