TIDBITS® EATS OUT AT RESTAURANTS by Janet Spencer

About 95% of all households report that at least one family member had dined out in the last month. Come along with Tidbits as we eat out! • Flea Dips THE RESTAURANT IS BORN • Until the mid-1700s there were no recognizable restaurants as such. There were inns, where lodgers were fed whatever was in the stew pot that night, and there were taverns where limited food played second fiddle to the drink, and there were places called “ordinaries” where a fixed menu was available at a fixed time for a fixed price. • In France, development of the restaurant was stymied by licensing laws. Only stewmakers were licensed to sell stew; only bakers were licensed to sell baked goods; only soupmakers were licensed to sell soup. • In 1765 a soupmaker named Boulanger decided to challenge the licensing system, so he offered his customers lamb’s feet in white sauce. The stewmakers took him to court. • The judge, however, decided that since lamb’s feet were not stewed meat, Boulanger was not breaking any laws. This was the first inroad into the world of restaurants. Boulanger hung a sign above his shop that read in French “Come to me all whose stomachs cry out and I shall restore you.” The French word for restore is “restaurabo” and gave us the word restaurant. FAST FACTS • August is the busiest month of the year for America’s restaurants. A typical family of four will spend more than $200 in various eating establishments in August. • The United States now has over 250,000 restaurants, of which more than a third are franchises. The franchises account for more than 40% of all the income for restaurants. • Americans are dining out even more often than at any previous time in our history. A survey showed that 99.4% of people who were under 30 years old typically eat out about once a week. Of the over 65 group, 87.9% had eaten out in the previous week. The survey also showed that 39.7% of all meals eaten away from home were served by a fast food outlet while only 6% of the meals were consumed at full service restaurants. • Another survey concluded that 56% of adults eat out at a sit-down restaurant at least once a week. 7% of people eat out almost daily • Each American eats almost 30 lbs. (13 kg) of hamburgers each year. McDonalds, the single largest chain of restaurants in the world, serves up 2,250 head of cattle per day. McDonalds has surpassed the Army as the biggest supplier of meals as well as the biggest employer of young people. • The following dishes are the most frequently ordered by people dining out: chicken; roast beef; spaghetti; turkey; ham; shrimp; stew; meatloaf; fish; macaroni & cheese. YOU BE THE JUDGE • When a food critic reviewed a restaurant, he used phrases like “a ghastly concoction” and “pretentious failures” and “green plague” and “yellow death.” The restaurant owner sued for $2 million in damages claiming that the reviewer ruined his reputation and humiliated him. If you were the judge, how would you rule?

HOLLYWOOD -- When Sylvester Stallone dropped Bruce Willis from “The Expendables 3” because he said he was “greedy and lazy,” he pulled out an ace by landing Harrison Ford. In addition, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Segal are out. The cast of “used to be action heroes” reads: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Jason Stratham, Jet Li, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mickey Rourke and Nicolas Cage. Stallone wanted to add some “20-somethings” to the cast, signing Milla Jovich, Kellan Lutz (the new Tarzan and Hercules, as well as a “Twilight Saga” star) and handsome Glenn Powell, the 24-year-old actor from “The Dark Knight Rises,” to fill the void left by Liam Hensworth, who’s doing “The Hunger Games 3”

instead. Don’t worry, Bruce Willis isn’t crying in his beer (he used to be a bartender). He’s already got “Sin City: A Dance to Kill For,” with Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Rosario Dawson, JosephGordon-Levitt and Mickey Rourke, being released next August. Sounds like he chose to hang around with a younger crowd, instead of the “Over the Hill Gang.” *** A p p a r e n t l y, Honda wants to save the traditional drivein movie genre. When the major studios announced they’d no longer provide 35 millimeter prints for drive-in theaters, hundreds of driveins made plans to close down by the end of the year.

Nobody Loves a Wart DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 13-year-old son has a wart on his hand. In fact, he has two of them. They don’t bother him, but they bother me. If you neglect them, will they go away on their own? I’m not sure we can handle a doctor’s bill right now. How else can we get rid of them on the cheap? I’d like to find and grab by the neck whoever gave him these warts. -- R.R.

“Project DriveIn,” being sponsored by Honda, aims to save as many drive-ins as it can by providing digital projectors. So far, it’s provided five drive-ins with the new equipment. To raise awareness, Honda plans to launch pop-up drive-ins at 1,000 Honda dealerships across the country by having free screenings of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.” So if you want to

ANSWER: Don’t bother looking for the person who passed the wart virus to your son. You’ll never find him or her. For one, some infected people show no signs of a wart, yet they can pass the virus to others. For two, the incubation period for a wart is two to six months. Do you think your son remembers who touched him six months ago? The human papillomavirus is the cause of warts. More than 150 different varieties exist. Some warts are dangers to health. The ones that cause cervical cancer are examples, but that’s a topic for another day. The ordinary wart is passed by skin-to-skin contact. Your son ought to make an effort not to touch the wart

Renner in another “Bourne” sequel. But Damon says he won’t do the film without his “Bourne” director, Paul Greengrass, who just finished directing Tom Hanks in “Captain Phillips” for an October release. If they want Matt badly enough, Universal will cave in and hire his director. Stay tuned. *** Alec Baldwin isn’t sitting around waiting for the birth of his new baby. He’s signed to do an as-yet-untitled Cameron Crowe film, with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Danny McBride. It’s a love story along the lines of Crowe’s “Jerry Maguire” and “Almost Famous.” Between a new film, a Broadway show and those commercials for that horrible creditcard company, we know what will be in his wallet ... baby pictures and big bucks! to other parts of his body. He can transfer the virus in that way. It’s OK to leave the warts alone. They disappear two out of three times, but their disappearance can take as long as two years. For home wart treatment, you’ll find many wart removers on the counters of your local drugstores. DuoPlant, Compound W and Wart-Off are but a few names. Follow bottle directions carefully. Duct tape -- the duct tape found in hardware stores -- has a mixed record as a wart remover. Apply tape to the warts and leave it in place for six days. You don’t need a huge amount of tape, just enough to cover the wart. On day six, remove the tape and have your son soak his hand in warm water. Then, with an emery board or pumice stone -- both drugstore items -- lightly rub the

This week we offer a hodgepodge of tips. Here’s one of my favorites: Use kitchen tongs to retrieve an item that’s stuck behind a heavy piece of furniture. It is much easier than trying to move the couch. -- JoAnn “To save money on going out to eat, we purchase gift cards at the local warehouse club we belong to. It’s usually 10 percent or 15 percent below face value, but that helps with the tip and tax.” -E.S. in Missouri “Old suitcases (hard-sided ones) are really fun holders for craft supplies. You can use hook and loop tape to secure smaller containers to the inside lining. This has worked well for my scrapbooking supplies. They are easy to carry from room to room.” -L.A. in Georgia If you have too many suds in the

it’s wearing off in three to four months. I’m concerned about overdosing on cortisone. How many shots are safe? -- B.K. ANSWER: Three to four cortisone shots a year are safe, and two years of such treatments also are safe. Sterling Flatware Q: I have inherited a set of sterling flatware in the Acorn pattern. When was it made, and should I keep it? -- Lorene, Lavaca, Ark. A: Your flatware was crafted by Georg Jensen, who opened his first silver shop in Copenhagen, Denmark, in about 1904. A later company opened in the United States in 1941 and ceased operations about a decade later. Your particular pattern was introduced in 1915. Typical prices per piece include a table fork, $180; a fruit spoon, $130; a teaspoon, $80; and a luncheon knife, $140. *** Q: I recently purchased a 2-gallon crock marked “Union Stoneware Co.” and “Minnesota Stoneware Co.” What do you think it is worth? -- Charlie, Mason City, Iowa A: I think your crock might be worth in the $50 to $150 range, assuming there are no chips, cracks or other problems. Crocks have become extremely popular with collectors in recent years, which has caused prices to soar. For example, recent auction prices include a N. Clark, Jr. jug from Athens, N.Y., from about 1850, $220; a 2-gallon Monmouth pottery crock with molded

Q: Is it true that Courteney Cox is dating her on-screen love, Josh Hopkins, in real life? -- Janie P., via e-mail A: The 49-year-old star of “Cougar Town” -- which has been renewed by TBS for a fifth season -- IS dating one of her co-stars; however, it isn’t Josh. Courteney and Brian Van Holt (who plays her ex-husband, Bobby) are the real-life couple. In fact, they recently vacationed with Courteney’s daughter (with ex-husband David Arquette), Coco, in Cancun, Mexico. They had to cut their vacation short when Courteney fell and broke her wrist, leading them all to head back to the States so she could be treated by her own physician. Q: I am obsessed with Lifetime’s “Devious Maids.” Such a great cast and wonderful story lines that I am just devouring. Please tell me it will be back for another season! -- Nina W., Van Nuys, Calif. A: I also am obsessed with the show, so I’m happy to report that Lifetime has renewed “Devious Maids” -- the network’s fastestgrowing drama ever -- for an even

rim, $175; and a chicken feeder made by the Western Stoneware Company, $75. *** Q: I have several World War II-era editions of the Cherry Ames Student Nurse series. Do they have any value? -- Joan, Pueblo West, Colo. A: I contacted several book collectors, and they seem to agree that your books should be worth about $20 each, assuming they are in good condition and have their original covers. The first three titles in the series are “Cherry Ames, Student Nurse”; “Cherry Ames, Senior Nurse”; and “Cherry Ames, Army Nurse.” All three were written by Helen Ward, originally from Danville, Ill., where many of her stories are based. *** Q: I have a complete run of National Geographic magazines from 1983 through the present. I would like to sell them, but have no idea of what they’re worth. -- Charlie, Stigler, Okla. A: In two words, not much. The National Geographic magazine was a handsome publication, but it has never been popular with collectors. I suspect your back issues are worth in the $1 to $3 range each. ***

Scanned Claims move along faster. Not Up to Speed But results so far The Department of Veterans Affairs has converted more than 30 percent of disability claims into digital files, according to a recent VA report. So far, 165 million pages have been scanned and uploaded by contractor Systems Made Simple from paper, photos, faxes, DVDs and flash drives. Those files now are at the fingertips of claims raters, and finishing up claims should

Fighting Scammers Three-hundred million dollars a year. That’s how much money seniors lose in one scam alone, the Jamaican lottery scam. The average loss is between $60,000 and $70,000 per victim. Even worse is that when scams are reported, nothing much is done, at least on the federal level. Any efforts have been scattered and ineffective. The Seniors Fraud Protection Act. Its purpose is threefold: educating seniors and their families about fraud schemes, improving the complaint system for victims of scams, and enhancing the monitoring of such schemes. The Federal Trade Commission would be directed to monitor and investigate possible scams and to create a special seniors website for information and complaints. Best of all, those complaints would no longer be ignored. The information would be made available to law enforcement. While there are too many scams targeting the elderly, the Jamaica lottery scam is particularly nasty. On Aug. 22, 1776, the British arrive at Long Island -- between Gravesend and New Utrecht -- with 24,000 men, and on Sept. 15 captured New York City. It would remain in British hands until the end of the war. On Aug. 20, 1862, New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley publishes a blistering editorial, “The Prayer of Twenty Millions,” calling on President Abraham Lincoln to declare emancipation for all slaves. Unbeknownst to Greeley, Lincoln was already moving in the direction of emancipation. On Aug. 24, 1873, William Henry Jackson becomes the first person to photograph Colorado’s elusive Mount of the Holy Cross, providing reliable proof of its existence. When his relatively staid arrangements began to lose the young crowd, Goodman pulled out upbeat, syncopated rhythm arrangements -- to the crowd’s immense delight -- and swing was born. On Aug. 25, 1950, in anticipation of a crippling strike by railroad workers, President Harry Truman issues an executive order putting America’s railroads under the control of the U.S. Army. The railroad strike lasted for 21 months. He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants when the United Steel Workers union struck later in the year. On Aug. 23, 1989, as punishment for betting on baseball, Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose accepts a settlement that includes a lifetime ban from the game. OVERDUE INFO ON YOUR DUE DATE; 3D PRINTERS AND NANO PARTICLES BY MICHAEL ROIZEN, M.D., AND MEHMET OZ, M.D.

Q: I’m pregnant with my second child. In my first pregnancy, I had labor induced when I was 14 days past my due date. Am I going to have to go through that again? -- Mary P. Greenville, S.C. A: Maybe (see below). But first, some great pregnancy facts! The longest pregnancy was reported by a doctor at Los Angeles Methodist Hospital in 1945: 25-year-old Beulah Hunter supposedly gave birth to a 6 pound, 15 ounce baby girl after carrying her for 375 days -- 95 days longer than the 280 that women are told is “normal.” While it seems unlikely the claim is accurate, it does make you wonder, because finally researchers have figured out the length of a normal pregnancy can vary by as much as 37 days! And how did they determine this? Well, scientists compared urinalysis results from a large group of pregnant women to determine exactly when each woman ovulated and when a fertilized embryo implanted in her womb, and then tracked the women throughout their pregnancy. They discovered that 268 days (or 38 weeks and 2 days) is average for a full-term birth. And it’s not abnormal for it to take much longer. It’s interesting to note that only 4 percent of women deliver at 280 days, and 30 percent do not deliver within 10 days of their estimated due date. Whether the length of your pregnancy is normal but simply longer-running than most is something only you and your doctor can determine. But one thing the researchers found was that while “full term” varies from woman to woman, for any one mom, the length of her pregnancy is pretty consistent from child to child. For more helpful info, take a look at our book “YOU: Having a Baby.” And work with your doctor to monitor the development of the fetus throughout your pregnancy.

When it comes to the last stages, do what you must to protect your health and the health of your child. Congratulations! Q: I’m fascinated by the new 3-D printers; I can’t wait to manufacture things at home for myself and the kids. But I hear they may be a health hazard. What’s that about? -- John P., Minneapolis A: We also love technology that makes life simpler and easier. Who doesn’t? But you’re right, at-home 3-D printers come with some pretty serious risks. Remember “Na-Nu, Na-Nu,” the friendly Orkan greeting that extraterrestrial visitor Mork (Robin Williams) used when meeting Earthlings? Well 3D printers come with a similar, “Nano Nano” greeting, but the meaning isn’t so friendly. At-home 3-D printers (available from $400 to $1,300) that let you manufacture your own cup and saucer or screwdriver can release from 20 to 200 billion toxic nanoparticles as they “print” objects. A recent test ranked them all as “high emitters.” And some studies indicate that the emissions are related to total and cardio-respiratory mortality, hospital admissions for stroke and asthma symptoms. The way 3-D printers work is that they heat up a thermoplastic feedstock (the equivalent of an inkjet cartridge) and then extrude the plastic in layers to create your desired object. The lowertemperature models use PLA (polylactic acid) feedstock and may be safer than the higher temperature ones that use ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) feedstock. But industrial 3-D printers that are already used to make everything from scientific equipment to molds of teeth operate in a tightly controlled and filtered environment. Athome models are freestanding and don’t come with exhaust ventilation or filtration accessories. So you and your kids could breathe in harmful mini-particles of plastic and associated chemicals. Our tip? Hold off on buying that desktop 3-D printer until more tests are done to ensure it’s safe for in-home use. And if you do have one already, make sure it’s in a garage or shed that’s very well-ventilated and install an air filter. Don’t let the kids use it, and consider wearing a ventilator when you’re around it. *** Mehmet Oz, M.D. is host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” and Mike Roizen, M.D. is Chief Wellness Officer and Chair of Wellness Institute at Cleveland Clinic. YOU BE THE JUDGE The courts said the review was “degrading, malicious, and unprovoked” but that it still expressed the writer’s opinion which was protected by the Constitution. UNUSUAL RESTAURANTS • A restaurant in Washington, D.C. opened in 1992, specializing in insect dishes. They served mealworm wontons, cricket meatloaf, candied mealworm, and cricket popcorn. Chef Mark Nevin claimed he went through some 20,000 mealworms and 8,000 crickets every two weeks. All of his dishes contained insects that had been ground into flour or paste and no recognizable bugs or bug parts showed up in the fare. • George Pappavlahodimitrakopoulous owned a restaurant in Lansing, Michigan in 1961. He said he’d give a free meal to anyone who could pronounce his name correctly. • When Gordon and Jasmine Geisbrecht decided to open a new restaurant in Winnipeg in 1986, they wanted to make it really different. They decided to make toilets the theme of the restaurant. Called “The Outhouse,” toilet bowls were placed here and there in the decorating scheme, and menus featured a toilet bowl logo. Ironically enough, health inspectors suspended their license when it was found that their restroom facilities were inadequate. ANTICS & ANECDOTES • A homeless man paying for his meal in Salt Lake City apologized for not tipping, saying, “I’m going to go rob a bank and I’ll be back.” He walked across the street, relieved First Interstate Bank of $1,200, and was arrested at the restaurant after leaving a $2 tip. • At the New House Hotel in Wales, Chef Albert Grabham decided to hide the restaurant’s New Year’s Eve earnings in the oven. He forgot about it until he lit the oven to prepare New Year’s Day lunch. continues on Page 11

Q: When I get out of the shower, the bathroom is completely fogged up, even when the exhaust fan is running. What’s the point of having a bathroom exhaust fan if it doesn’t clear the air? -- Kurt C., Huntsville, Ala. A: Good question. If a bathroom exhaust fan doesn’t do the job it’s advertised to do, what’s the point of having one? The exhaust fan serves a good purpose. It draws moist air out of the bathroom, minimizing damage to wallpaper, baseboards, the ceiling and anything else that isn’t sealed against water. However, if a “fog” lingers for more than five minutes after a shower, the fan isn’t doing its job. The problem could be a blocked exhaust duct, an ailing fan motor or a unit that’s not large enough to clear the entire room. In every case, the unit is not pulling enough air out of the bathroom. An exhaust fan should remove as many cubic feet of air each minute as the number of square feet of the bathroom’s floor space. Clean dust and debris from the unit and air ducts. If cleaning the unit doesn’t help, consider replacing it.

Switch off the unit at the circuit box, then remove the front grille. Use a circuit tester to make sure no power is coming through the wires attached to the fan motor. Do this by placing one probe of the tester against each connector, then placing the second probe against the grounding screw on the fan housing. Don’t touch the bare wires with your fingers. If the tester glows at any point, go back to the circuit box and turn off the correct switch. Remove the mounting screws and pull the fan out of the wall or ceiling cavity. Disconnect the vent hose and household wiring to free the unit, then set it aside. Next, measure the fan’s wall or ceiling cavity and record it. Measure the square footage of the bathroom, as well. Take those figures and the fan assembly to the home-improvement store and purchase a fan that works best for the room’s square footage. Make sure the new fan’s exhaust port matches the size of the old exhaust port. Install the new fan in the old cavity, if possible (a larger unit may require you to increase the size of the cavity). Attach the fan housing to the stud or joist, avoiding the nail holes of the old unit. Test the household wiring to make sure the power is off before attempting to connect them to the new unit. Then, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to hook up the wires. Connect the vent hose to the new unit’s exhaust port, replace the grille cover and switch on the power at the circuit box. HOME TIP Use caution when working with electrical products. Use a circuit tester to make sure the power is completely off, and don’t touch bare wiring with your fingers! Gather Neighbors for Front Yard Fun It all started with putting lawn chairs in the front yard. Maren and Mike Levad wanted to get to know their neighbors who, like them, hibernate during long Minnesota winters. So when spring came last year, they moved lawn chairs from the backyard to the front, hoping to stir up casual conversations when people pushing strollers and walking dogs passed by. “Within days, neighbors on both sides of us did the same, and the simple idea rippled down the block,” said 32-year-old Maren. “This summer, we were inspired to celebrate our growing friendships and host monthly Thursday front-yard get-togethers.” Keeping it simple is key. “In June, we gathered for food and fun after work f r o m 5 - 7 , ” said Maren. “I put out easy appetizers and beverages on a picnic table, and our 3-year-old Eliza helped bring out fun stuff for all ages -- from bubbles, sidewalk paint and dress-up clothes to croquet. Eliza reminded me that no party is complete without music,” she added. Are you inspired to celebrate community and hang with the locals? Start now and plan a non-fussy gathering before summer is out.

vitations with drawings or stamps. SET THE SCENE: Place a blooming flowerpot from your porch on the middle of a picnic table for an instant centerpiece. Tie a rope between trees or posts near the entry to your yard and use clothespins to hang a welcome sign and kid artwork. Use “outside” toys, games and sports equipment for active fun on the lawn. PREP SIMPLE SNACKS: Serve food and drinks on large trays for no-fuss transport out of your kitchen and into the yard. Choose easy, fresh eats to serve, such as chilled watermelon slices, ripe and tasty peaches, apricots and plums. Fill large bowls with fresh popcorn. Sip easy-to-prepare beverages and lots of ice water. For a refreshing punch that sparkles, mix pink lemonade with club soda in seconds. Add ice and float lemon slices. Stack paper cups next to the beverages, and let kids decorate them with stickers to identify their own cups. When the idea takes root, make it a potluck at the end of the summer and ask neighbors to bring food, drinks and activities to share. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Salads: Beyond Lettuce When you hear the word “salad,” what comes to mind? These days everyone is putting a twist on salads, and what better way to get our children to eat more fruits and vegetables than by creating a colorful and flavorful salad for lunch or dinner. Dietary guidelines recommend 4 1/2 cups (9 servings) of fruits and vegetables for a 2,000-calorie diet, so why not make a salad to help meet this recommendation? Here are a few tips to make a salad that will appeal to even the pickiest eater: --Make it colorful! Dark leafy greens supply a tremendous amount of nutrients, including vitamins A, C and K, iron, calcium and fiber. Add some carrots, red bell peppers, tomatoes, blanched asparagus, beets or any other colorful vegetable, and you get additional nutrients critical for maintaining eyesight, bone health and digestive health. --Salad isn’t just for vegetables anymore! Try adding in heart-healthy walnuts, fresh apples, citrus segments, grapes, strawberries or blueberries to your plate of colorful vegetables. Like many vegetables, fruits contain antioxidants that can help protect against certain forms of cancer as well as reduce levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol. --Add some protein! Protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps us full longer. Protein also is needed for healthy muscles. Eggs, lean meat, beans, nuts and cheese (in limited quantities) are easy ways to add protein. --Find a healthier dressing that works for you! An oil-andvinegar dressing is a healthy choice -- the healthy fat from the oil helps your body absorb some of the vitamins from the salad -- but you still should limit

She was upset because the head waiter had refused to seat her and her husband immediately. “Why,” she exclaimed, “We had to tell him who we were!” Gerald inquired politely, “And who were you?” • Dining with friends at a fancy restaurant, Dorothy Parker rose and excused herself saying, “Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom.” She paused a moment, then added, “I really have to use the telephone, but I’m too embarrassed to say so.”
