Foreign Drums Beating Transnational Experiences in Early Modern Europa
Marjatta Bell and Marjatta Hietala
Helsinki Finland´s Innovative Capital Lavishly illustrated, Helsinki – Finland’s Innovative Capital tells how a small, rocky seaport in remote Finland developed, within two centuries, into an innovative center, the home of world famous architects, designers, musicians and scientists and the seat of some of the leading high-tech centers. It tells how Helsinki acquired its handsome neo-classical center; how today’s internationally renowned childcare and education services in Finland were developed.
Foreign Drums Beating offers some examples of the interaction, encounters and exchanges that were typical of the frontier zones in Early Modern Europe. Conflicts and coexistence were both at the heart of such regions, as was the spread of cultural influences. This, the beating of foreign drums did not only rally troops to fight abroad during periods of war, but also encouraged interaction across the frontier zones during times of peace, thereby offering plentiful opportunities for transnational experiences. The Springs of Democracy National and Transnational Debates on Constitutional Reform in the British, German, Swedish and Finnish Parliaments, 1917– 1919 During the First World War, conflicts between the people’s sacrifices and their political participation led to crises of parliamentary legitimacy. The Springs of Democracy compares British, German, Swedish and Finnish debates on revolution, rule by the people, democracy and parliamentarism and their transnational links. In Finland, competing Russian revolutionary discourses and German- and Swedish-inspired appeals to legality brought about the deterioration of parliamentary legitimacy and a civil war. Otto V. Zwehl
Matthias Alexander Castrén Edited by Timo Salminen
Archaeologica et historica Universitaria Matthias Alexander Castrén (1813–1852) was by far the most significant Finnish linguist of the 19th century. In addition to being a linguist he was also a multidisciplinary scholar, equally versatile in the fields of ethnography, folklore, mythology, archaeology, history, and human geography. He left behind a huge corpus of field data, collected by himself during prolonged expeditions to Karelia, Lapland, Arctic Russia, and Siberia between 1838 and 1849. This volume contains Castrén’s archaeological and historical writings. Linking Clauses and Actions in Social Interaction
Hans-Hermann Bartens
The articles in this volume provide a state-of-the-art reflection on current thinking on the subject of linking clauses and actions in interaction. Topics treated include the linkages between verbal actions and physical actions, the linking of questions and answers in multilingual. This volume concerns the ways in which verbal and non-verbal actions are combined and linked in a range of contexts in everyday conversation, in institutional contexts, and in written journalism. This research considers the linguistic borders between a language and a dialect as well as the administrative, cultural, and mental borders that affect the linguistic ones. The articles approach mental borders between dialects and areas of mixed dialect, language ideologies, language mixing, and contact-induced language change. Together, the articles paint a picture of multidimensional, multilingual and ever-changing linguistic reality where diverse borders, boundaries, and barriers meet, intertwine, and cross each other. Ostiacica Matthias Alexander Castrén was appointed Docent of Finnish and Ancient Nordic Languages and Tribes at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki in 1841, and ten years later he became the first Professor of the Finnish Language. The Khanty grammar is one of the few materials Castrén was able to publish himself. He collected the material over the course of a few weeks in the summer of 1845 in the Irtys and Surgut areas, where the southern and eastern dialects of Khanty were spoken.

Storied and Supernatural Places Studies in Spatial and Social Dimensions of Folklore and Sagas
Edited by Dace Bula
Latvian Folkloristics in the Interwar Period This book is a contribution by Latvian scholars to the current reflexive trend of folklore studies toward an intense focus on the discipline’s past. lt also joins the recent efforts to broaden the geographical scope of folklore history by concentrating on internationally less represented research traditions. By offering a broad perspective on Latvian interwar folkloristics, this book covers relevant national and international contexts of folklore research, dominant research paradigms and key personalities in the field.
Storied and Supernatural Places addresses the narrative construction of places, landscapes and their supernatural dimensions, the relationship between tradition communities and their environments, and the spatial conditions for encounters with the supernatural as they are manifested in European folklore and in early literary sources, such as the Old Norse sagas. Prolepticism The Futurist Theology of Ted Peters

Las raíces finlandesas en España Estudio sobre los movimientos migratorios de Finlandia a España
It is a common notion that the Christian faith is the product of history: that it relies on what has come before. But what if this view was turned upside down? What if the future, instead of the past, determined the meaning of Christian faith, even the meaning of this world and its life? The focus of this study is on the futurist theological thinking of Ted Peters, called proleptic theology. Its fundamental idea is that the future has priority over the past and present. The Origins of Religion Perspectives from Philosophy, Theology, and Religious Studies
Kaisa-Maria Pihlava
Forgotten Women Leaders The authority of Women Hosts of Early Christian Gatherings in the First and Second Centuries C.E. While once essential agents in early Christian communities, in centuries to come women hosts were forgotten. Kaisa-Maria Pihlava, Th.D., sets out to trace literary representations of women hosts in early Christian sources. Pihlava argues that women hosts had authority in their early Christian communities because of the domestic setting of these communities and the authority that hosts had irrespective of their gender. Life’s Work in the City Without Ground Cross-border family politics between Shenzhen and Hong Kong
Edited by Ilkka Niiniluoto and Thomas Wallgren
On the Human Condition Philosophical Essays in Honour of the Centennial Anniversary of Georg Henrik von Wright Academician Georg Henrik von Wright (1916–2003) was an internationally leading analytic philosopher and philosophical logician but also an openminded bridge-builder between philosophical schools and an inspiring intellectual and cultural personality. His centenary year 2016 was celebrated with several conferences, lecture series, books, and exhibitions. One of the main events was the conference The Human Condition. This volume contains five key note papers and sixteen contributed papers from this conference.
How do we evaluate our life’s work, the reflexive understanding of our role in the reproduction of society, when we are certain our children’s lives will be different from ours? How is space produced between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, two metropolises constituted of air-conditioned passageways, concourses and tunnels that aim to disorientate the traveller? Jonathan Burrow shows that if we take the time to listen to those who love across borders, we can find hidden possibilities embedded in seemingly impossible situations. The present volume of Atlas Florae Europaeae (AFE) is the last of the five devoted to the Rosaceae, which is, as to the species numbers, among the three largest plant families of Europe. The relatively long time and great effort of the European botanical community required to finish the mapping of the Rosaceae have already resulted in. For example, the first ever complete sets of maps of the genera Atchemitla and Rubus on the European scale and in a renaissance of interest in the taxonomy of these and other rosaceous genera. The Dynamic Universe Toward a unified picture of physical reality
Joakim Donner
Marine shells in the study of the Holocene After the ice sheet that covered northern Europe had melted there was an uplift of earth’s crust. At the emerging coasts marine shells were deposited in beach sediments. By using radiocarbon ages of the shells the relative uplift during the last 10 000 years could be reconstructed. In Greenland the coastal areas similarly emerged as in Scandinavia, and the marine shells could also there be used in dating the relative uplift.
The Dynamic Universe theory is a holistic description of the observable physical reality. Like the Copernican revolution, the DU creates a system perspective allowing straightforward mathematics and a conceivable cosmological picture of the universe — and gives precise predictions to observables without dark energy or other artificial parameters. It is a unifying theory converting spacetime in variable coordinates into dynamic space in absolute coordinates.
