THE FINNISH SS-VOLUNTEERS AND ATROCITIES AGAINST JEWS, CIVILIANS AND PRISONERS OF WAR IN UKRAINE AND THE CAUCASUS REGION 1941–1943 An Archival Survey

In the spring of 1941, Finland began to recruit volunteers to serve in the German Waffen-SS. After the perils of the Winter War of 1939–40, the Finnish government and the military high command wanted support against the continuing existential threat posed by the Soviet Union. This report has gone through the actions of the Finnish volunteers have been followed where possible on a daily basis. Detailed examination of archive documents has permitted an image of what the Finns knew about the violent acts in Ukraine and the Caucasus, how they responded to them, and ultimately what was the Finns’ role in the atrocities. FROM DESTRUCTION TO DEMOCRATIC REVIVAL Local Government in Estonia This study provides a comparative perspective of Estonian local government during the two periods of national independence (1918–1940 and since 1991). The author focuses on county governments, the institution of the mayor, and electoral rules. The research delves into how the legacies of the interwar period have shaped institutional choices during the post-communist period, with the conclusion that both interwar and communist legacies can explain some of these choices during the 1990s. LIBRO DE LOS HABICES DE LA ALPUJARRA DE 1530 Edición, estudio e índices de un manuscrito del Archivo Histórico Diocesano de Granada

Folklorists are not only interested in old or even dying traditions. They have a keen eye for emerging traditions as well, and since the 1980s there has been an interest in the communication technologies that are in a constant state of metamorphosis. ln this volume, folklore researchers analyse both the long procesesses of learning to utilise new digital technologies and the fleeting moments in the life of a social media phenomenon, as well as the methods of archiving these for further use. Environments change at speeds never before experienced. Massive species loss is just one transformation affecting life forms and climate change another. lcelandic and medieval lrish literature tells stories about places, reflecting a deep engagement with the concept of ‘place’ and the creation of a ‘sense of place’. This book takes as its starting point the shared interest that lcelandic and lrish storytelling have in ‘place’ and asks whether the medieval lcelandic sense of place, as reflected in lcelandic narrative culture, has been influenced by the close contacts that existed during the Viking Age between lceland and the Gaelicspeaking world of lreland and Scotland. MIGRANTS AND LITERATURE IN FINLAND AND SWEDEN

A new interdisciplinary interest has risen to study interconnections between oral tradition and book culture. In addition to the use and dissemination of printed books, newspapers etc., book culture denotes manuscript media and the circulation of written documents of oral tradition in and through the archive, into published collections. Book culture also intertwines the process of framing and defining oral genres with literary interests and ideologies. MYSTERIOUS MINDS The Making of Private and Collective Consciousness in Marja-Liisa Vartio’s Novels Marja-Liisa Vartio (1924-1966) is considered one of the foremost innovators of consciousness representation in Finnish post-war modernism. Mysterious Minds, the first study to examine this subject in depth, explores the portrayal of fictional minds in her novels. The volume suggests alternative methods for reading Vartio’s fictional minds not only as private, solipsistic, and selfreflective consciousnesses, but also as social, collective, and interconnected entities. This volume centers on selected readings of Neo-Latin dissertations, satires and other texts written during the period between 1500 and 1800. Texts offer highly significant, in their own time widely influential documentation for European scholarship and literary cultures. The printed dissertation was the predominant form of academic publication in seventeenth-century Germany. Master’s dissertations of this period were conventional pieces of scholarship that summarised traditional knowledge and scientific discussion of their day. The aim of the present work (Roman Law in Greek) is to study the composition and semantics of Byzantine Greek legal vocabulary, especially that related to procedural law, from the perspective of the Latin influence on Greek. The work is not an exhaustive treatment of all relevant words. Instead, by focusing on a selection of examples and on methodological questions, it tries to open a new perspective on Byzantine legal language. The study is in German. The three papers of this Yearbook are discussing the problematic of security and inequality through different material and virtual sites. The key interest is how everyday security and insecurity are produced and lived out and how ordinary people experience societal circumstances and changes in their own livelihoods. LARGE-SCALE PATTERNS OF BIODIVERSITY IN NORTHERN STREAMS Insights from species, traits and phylogeny

H EL ENA TUKI AI N E N

MULTI-SCALE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GEODIVERSITY AND BIODIVERSITY ACROSS HIGHLATITUDE ENVIRONMENTS: IMPLICATIONS FOR NATURE CONSERVATION The capability of present conservation actions to protect and sustain biodiversity in the face of global change is under debate. This study investigates the potential of the framework by examining the relationship between biodiversity and geodiversity at high-latitude environments. The results of this thesis highlighted the overall positive relationships between geo- and biodiversity at both landscape and local scales. The variation in species-based information has been the most commonly used approach to quantify how biodiversity varies through space and time, omitting the different evolutionary histories of each species and the fact that communities are constituted of species with different ecological roles. Mariana Perez Rocha investigated largescale biodiversity patterns across northern streams by assessing the influence of different sets of variables underlying these patterns and through the investigation of different facets of biodiversity. POLITICAL GEOGRAPHIES OF HEALTH CARE Governmentality of population health in the constitution and transformation of state spatiality

Visitor use of national parks must be efficiently planned to cope with increasing and diversifying use of these areas. The study increases the understanding of factors that influence visitor experiences, and reveals how PPGIS methods could serve visitor planning practices and frameworks. Moreover, the study advances understandings of challenges and opportunities related to implementing PPGIS methods into outdoor recreation planning. Geographical Society of Northern Finland • Nordia Geographical Publications 47:4 • ISBN 978-952-62-2056-7 • ISSN 1238-2086 • Soft • 50 pp. • 2018 • EUR 21

Population health has been inseparable from the spatial constitution of the modern capitalist state since the 19th century and particularly after World War II. The study concludes that health care is an important organising element of the relationship between state power, state space and population and thus plays a crucial role in the historically contingent constitution and transformation of state spatiality. TRANSNATIONAL FINNISH MOBILITIES Proceedings of Finnforum XI This volume is based on a selection of papers presented at the conference FinnForum XI: Transnational Finnish Mobilities held in Turku, in 2016. The eleven chapters discuss two key issues of our time, mobility and transnationalism, from the perspective of Finnish migration. The study shows how mobility and transnationalism are not unique features of our time, as scholars tend to portray them. Altogether, the volume brings together fresh perspectives on Finnish migration. Institute of Migration • Research 3 • ISBN 978-952-7167-61-8 • ISSN 2343-3493 • Soft • 283 pp. • 2019 • EUR 30

ANNALES ACADEMIAE SCIENTIARUM FENNICAE Mathematica 44:1 Includes the following articles, among others: Wolfgang Hansen and Ivan Netuka, Nearly hyperharmonic functions and Jensen measures; Masahiro Yanagishita, Construction of complex Finsler metric on p-integrable Teichmüller spaces; Hitoshi Tanaka and Kôzô Yabuta, The n-linear embedding theorem for dyadic rectangles; João P. G. Ramos, Sharp total variation results for maximal functions; Evgeny Sevost’yanov, On boundary extension of mappings in metric spaces in the terms of prime ends.

The Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) is one of the leading figures in the field of contemporary classical music. Curiously, despite the fascinating characteristics of Lindberg’s works and the several interesting subjects his music brings up, his works have not been widely researched. This study examines Lindberg’s technical and aesthetic thinking by analyzing his significant works. The main purpose of the study is to demonstrate the composer’s construction of gesture and dramaturgy from the viewpoint of musical dramaturgy.
