Take action against bullying! In light of Anti-Bullying Week that took place from 1317 November, we shed the light against the concerning trend of bullying in schools. Bullying in schools is a concerning trend. It almost always leads to behavioural problems, diminished academic performance, and unfortunately, even suicide. “Understanding the impact of bullying on a scholar’s mental health has gained increased importance for teachers, guardians, and parents. This understanding is crucial for the sake of the scholar’s psychological well-being and academic development,” says Nkazimulo Zitha, head of School Achievement at SPARK Schools. Bullying is defined as unwanted aggressive behaviour and usually occurs when there is a power imbalance between people. When it becomes repetitive, it can inflict significant harm upon the victim. The five types of bullying: Physical – this is the most common form of bullying. It involves physical actions like pushing, tripping, kicking, hitting, spitting on, or destruction of a child’s property on purpose. Verbal – these bullies almost always operate when adults are not around. They will make fun of their victims, tease them, call them names, insult them, and verbally intimidate them. Cyberbullying – this happens in the digital space, on computers, smartphones, social media, texts, and instant messaging. Relational – this bully is usually set on increasing their own social standing by diminishing the standing of another scholar
REDDAM HOUSE Matric 2023 Prestigious Award Winners
through humiliation, spreading lies, and exclusion. Prejudicial – bullies target factors like race, religion, sexual orientation, or social standing. Zitha says the long-term effects of bullying on a scholar’s mental health must not be underestimated. “Research has shown that being a victim of bullying can lead to longer-term impacts including interpersonal violence, substance use, sexual violence, poor social functioning, and poor performance. Being bullied at a young age can affect someone well past childhood and can cause lifelong psychological damage,” she says. Warning signs to look out for if you suspect a scholar in your care is being bullied are changes in sleep patterns, loss of appetite, frequent tears and mood swings, unexplained bruises and scratches, damaged belongings, coming home hungry, not wanting to go to school and deteriorating academic performance. “Teach your children the difference between bullying and teasing. While the line can be subtle, it’s crucial for them to grasp that persistent teasing can qualify as bullying”.

WYNBERG GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL Matric Valedictory 2023 On 20 October we gathered to commemorate a significant moment with the Matric class of 2023 – their ultimate school event: the Valedictory ceremony. The Matric Class of 2023 along with the school’s staff, parents, and guardians, came together for the last time. Lunabile Veto, the Head of School for 2023, as well as Taskeen Hoosain and Florence Omari, the Co-Chairpersons of the RCL for 2023 delivered their final speeches to the
Grade 12 learners. We were also privileged to hear a special address from our retiring Deputy Head, Ms. Melissa McCarthy, who will conclude her tenure at the end of this year. This marks a significant moment in her career as well. While we bid farewell to the Class of 2023 with a touch of sadness, we eagerly anticipate the opportunities and adventures that the future holds for them.
Cultural The WGHS Cultural Pillar was honoured to be invited to perform at The Grove Primary School’s Social Event.
Academic Outreach Academic Committee: Outreach Subcommittee Certificates Earlier this term the Outreach Subcommittee of the new Academic Committee invited learners in Grades 8 – 11 to nominate someone from their class who has demonstrated excellent improvement or progress in class. This was not
only limited to improved marks but also notable organisational skills, active participation in class discussions, and an overall positive attitude towards schoolwork. The committee members visited the tutor groups to present certificates and chocolates to learners who received the most nominations in their class.

WYNBERG BOYS’ JUNIOR SCHOOL Athletics WBJS entered 22 athletes in the Paarl Boys’ Primary School night meeting. A perfect night for athletics under a mountainous backdrop resulted in excellent performances by our boys, with Seth Davids setting a new U12 100m record. Cricket
At the end of the night, WBJS had walked away with 16 gold, 2 silver, and 7 bronze medals. A staff member from Paarl Boys’ Primary approached us on the night to compliment us on our boys’ good manners. They were blown away by the boys greeting them continuously. What great ambassadors for the school and their families. We are extremely proud of them all.
The U13A cricket team participated in the annual Cape Schools Cricket Week. Mr Poleman, Mr Oosterwyk, and Mr Rajee travelled with the team to Queenstown in the Eastern Cape.
