Preparing for final exams - a 5-month guide for matric students

Matric students from the Class of 2024 have roughly five months left to prepare for their final exams. While this is a tight timeframe for those who have not yet tracked and prepared their final strategy, it is possible - with dedication and motivation – to still lay a solid foundation before the first paper. Peter Kriel, General Manager at The Independent Institute of Education shares the following tips.

JUNE: ORGANISE AND PLAN

“With five months to go, you still have time to set clear goals and understand your objectives. You should use this time to identify the grades you want to achieve and the subjects you need to focus on. Create a study schedule to ensure that you plan your time effectively, and develop a realistic study schedule that covers all subjects, balancing schoolwork and personal time,” says Kriel.

“The most important approach however is to stick to the schedule as at this stage consistency is crucial”.

JULY: BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION

With only four months to go, you should focus on active learning techniques such as writing down key concepts and points in your own words.

You can also consider study groups since studying with peers can provide new insights and make learning more enjoyable.

It is also now a good time to complete past papers or sample questions to get familiar with the exam format and timing and to help you focus on aspects that you have not yet mastered.”

HEAD OFFICE

AUGUST: DEEPEN

UNDERSTANDING

With three months to go, and if you met your deliverables in the previous month, you would now have a good idea as to where the gaps are, notes Kriel.

“The time is now to focus on weak areas to regularly assess your progress and keep identifying areas where you struggle. Spend extra time on these weak areas and use a variety of study methods like flashcards, mind maps and educational videos to keep things interesting and deepen your understanding.”

SEPTEMBER: INTENSIVE REVIEW

The preparation pace must now increase and become laser-focused on the exams which are two months away.

“It would be a good idea to practice and review by taking full-length practice exams under timed conditions, as this builds exam stamina and time management skills. Critically go through your answers to understand what you did well and where you can improve, and focus on these areas now.”

OCTOBER: FINAL PREPARATIONS

It is the big month and time for final revisions. This month you must focus on reviewing the most critical concepts and information in each of your subjects. However, avoid overloading yourself. Short, focused review sessions are more effective at this stage. Get a good idea of your exam schedule and plan your exam days to avoid last-minute stress. Ensure that you have all necessary supplies such as pens, pencils, calculators, and your ID.

WATERFALL SCHOOLS

Waterfall College hosts Winter Sports Fest

Waterfall Prep pupils enjoy learning under the stars

On Saturday, 4 May 2024, we hosted our annual Winter Sports Festival and welcomed various schools from across KZN for games of rugby sevens, netball and hockey. The elation was palpable from early in the morning, an overflow of the war cry practices that took place on our campus leading up to the Sports Festival. Our netball and hockey girls played very well and our rugby and hockey boys did us proud.

Thank you to Curro Salt Rock High School, Grace College, Hermannsburg School, Highway College, Maritzburg Christian School, Wartburg Kirchdorf School and Webley College for an epic day of sports and making memories!

On Thursday, 11 April 2024, Waterfall Preparatory’s Intermediate Phase (IP) pupils and staff conducted the day a little differently, arriving at school at 14:30. As the rest of the campus was getting ready to go home, the IP pupils arrived for what promised to be an exciting evening of fun and learning - the Prep’s first Night School!

The primary goal of this event was to provide our pupils with a memorable and enriching experience. We believe that learning extends beyond the confines of a traditional classroom and this event allowed us to explore the wonders of our natural surroundings in a unique and engaging way.

Our pupils started the evening with an assembly, which was followed by some classroom learning. Thereafter, the learning moved from inside the classroom to exploration on campus. Our pupils enjoyed an amazing Music lesson/praise session while watching the sunset, followed by a Natural Sciences lesson in the forest.

There truly was something for everyone, as activities also included playing Pictionary, collecting glow stars in the forest and making s’mores!

The evening presented teachers with the chance to host practical lessons on nocturnal wildlife and star-gazing. It also presented an excellent opportunity for students to connect with the environment, fostering a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

“One of my favourite things was seeing kids in different environments and out of their comfort zones,” says Lauren Rendilheiro, Waterfall Preparatory’s Head of Intermediate Phase and Grade 7 teacher. “It was great to see the bonding that happened with the kids within different classes.

The Grade 4, 5 and 6s ended the night with a bring and share feast, while the Grade 7s enjoyed a banquet. The night was enjoyed by all and, who knows, this could be the start of many exciting nocturnal adventures.

Our pupils enjoying a bring and share dinner Making Mathematics fun with 3D shapes and objects For Maths, three heads are better than one! PINETOWN BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

Pinetown Boys’ High School is proud of their two learners and sportsman excelling not only in the classroom but also on the field. Sandile Soni and Linda Shangase, have been selected to play for the provincial rugby KZN schools Wildebeest team. This is a prestigious honour and only a few get the opportunity to be selected to represent their province in any sporting code or activity that involves competing .

These young men have dedicated their time, efforts and the willingness to keep fighting through challenges and obstacles along the way and most importantly making use of all available resources to them to develop their understanding and awareness of the game of rugby. Linda plays loose-head prop and Sandile plays tight-head prop. Linda draws his inspiration from the well renowned former springbok prop veteran Tendai Mtawarira also known as ‘the beast’. Sandile prides himself in the set pieces of the game, he shows his strengths and abilities in the scrums and contributes to the team in lineouts by his strength of lifting the jumpers getting them to heights where they contest for opponents balls or giving his teammates jumpers to heights where they keep their possession of the ball. Linda displays qualities that coaches wish to have in their players that they coach. Both players display physicality and mobility. One thing that’s guaranteed is these boys don’t shy away from any opponent within their channel on the field of play.

Senior rugby coach at Pinetown Boys High School

Mr. Lunga Ninela said ‘Linda is a down to earth humble character, he does not say much, he’s a person that moves around the field of play looking for work. Linda has worked very hard in the off season and preseason and truly deserves

executing his tasks expected of him on the field and off the field in displaying great leadership characteristics.’.

Director of Sports Mr. Zukile Madikizela with great happiness had the following to say “Linda has always been a disciplined character on and off the field. He has grown his understanding of the rugby game in the past year, he has shown great interest in improving his technique at the scrum set-piece as prop as that is one area that many fail to master but Linda has grown his knowledge of rugby and his technique at the scrum. Pinetown Boys is continuing to produce provincial rugby players each year. When our rugby boys achieve great things, it has a ripple effect (We had Kwanda Mhlongo in 2023 who was selected to represent KwaZulu Natal schools team). This kind of environment sparks a fire with the teammates, who see the rewards of hard work and dedication by those selected for provincial selection. This motivates them to push themselves further, striving to grow as athletes and contribute to future successes.

Pinetown Boys’ High school Principal, Mr Sing proudly expressed his joy by commenting on the students of Pinetown Boys’ getting their call up to the provincial team by stating ‘ we are very proud of Linda Shangase and Sandile Soni for the achievement of making the Natal side . Having Kwanda Mhlongo leading the way and making the provincial team in 2023 inspired the boys and the rest of Pinetown Boys’ learners to strive for excellence in any aspect of life. It’s been a stellar season from the boys the results truly speak for themselves and as PBHS boys to fly the flag high and to show that the learners of PBHS still have players with the capability of playing at the highest level. We hope this will open more avenues for our boys and more especially the

Crawford International La Lucia celebrates 25-Years

On Saturday 4 May, Crawford International La Lucia celebrated our 25-Year anniversary as a campus. It was a beautiful, sunny day to host our Crawford families as well as our La Lucia community, as we commemorated our wonderful milestone! It was heartwarming to witness families from the campus come together for this special day.

Tummy’s were full, games were played, gifts were bought, mess was made; happy faces all around, music and laughing were all the sounds.

As part of the festive afternoon, we had a short ceremony where we looked back on the history of our prestigious school. When our school opened in January 1999, it was an area full of red sand and sugarcane - with no trees in sight. The student body was small and so was the staff compliment. But they were excited for this new era that they were ushering in. To look at the 3x phase school on one beautiful

campus, with 2x conservancies and the best ocean view - we have come a long way in structures and buildings. But we have also grown as a student, parent, and staff body - working together to make Crawford International La Lucia the top private co-ed school in KZN.

A special part of this ceremony was to also acknowledge the incredible staff who have been with our school since inception - 25 Years of being a part of this staff compliment and pouring into the foundations of our amazing school. A big thank you to each and every one of these 10x staff (2x not featured in this photo collection) for the indelible mark that they have left on our school community.

And of course, what occasion is complete without an official cake cutting?!

Thank you to all who shared this day with us!

CHELSEA PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Executive Council 2024

Chelsea Preparatory School is pleased to announce the 2024 Executive Council for its esteemed Service Team Programme. Following a rigorous Service Team Leadership Camp, the Executive Council members were voted in, comprising Chairperson Grace du Plessis, Vice Chairperson Ryan Mbamba, and Secretary Dhyana Smith. The service Team programme has been in existence for over a decade and is a unique initiative that has transformed the traditional prefect system, empowering Grade 7 pupils to actively engage in service and community outreach.

The Executive Council plays a pivotal role in representing Chelsea Prep pupils and Grade 7 Service Teams, addressing concerns, and proposing service projects that benefit the school and wider community.

The Service Team programme was introduced in 2010 and is, now in its fourteenth year. It has been a transformative initiative that has redefined the traditional prefect system. It empowers Grade 7 pupils to actively engage in service and community outreach, instilling a sense of responsibility and leadership from a young age.

The programme offers a diverse range of teams, including Environment, Computech, Recycling, Events, Media, Sound, Sport, Art, School Pride, and EarlyAct.

Each team provides pupils with an opportunity to contribute meaningfully, based on their interests and skills, fostering a culture of service within the school and beyond.

A key factor in the programme’s success is the nomination of two leaders from each team, who participate in regular meetings with agendas and minutes, promoting responsibility and accountability. These leaders also attend a dedicated leadership camp, where they develop essential skills such as leadership qualities, communication, conflict resolution collaberation, and problem-solving.

Deputy Principal Nici Hilliar reflects on the programme’s impact, stating, “Our Service Team programme instills a fundamental shift in our students’ mind-set. Instead of asking, ‘What can my school do for me?’ they ask, ‘What can I give back to my school and community to make a difference?’ This shift in perspective fosters a culture of service and leadership that extends far beyond the classroom.”

As Chelsea Preparatory School continues to prioritize service and leadership, it remains committed to nurturing young minds that are not only academically adept but also socially conscious and community-focused.
