‘n Gedagte vir al die Gouties as jy op die veld uitdraf: “You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime”

What can the school and parents expect from your team this year?

The school and parents can expect a team that’s got good basics and great communication. Players that play as a team, with mental toughness, confidence, good decision making, consistency, has a great fitness level, speed and good vision.

Where is your strength as a team?

Our strength lies in the fact that we are a unity. We are not just players, we are a brotherhood.

What is the highlight of your team’s hockey season this year?

I would say the ECHS tour which we attended during the March holidays at Bethlehem Voortrekker. It gave us an opportunity to really build our team as we had quite a few team members who had never held a stick before; it truly helped us grow individually and as a team.

How do you motivate your team?

This season I’ve realized that as a leader it’s not about what you say, but about what you do. I would say I motivate my team by actually taking the first step in all we do, but other that that, having a heartfelt conversation with them from time to time, regrouping, and helping them realise what we are working for, is how I try to keep our morale high.

Who is your vice-captain and how does he support you?

My vice-captain is Valentine Kgang. He helps me control and calm the team down, he is usually the first person I go to whenever I have an idea which involves the team.

What do you as a team want to achieve this year? What will make you proud?

Our main goal was to win the Free State Cup, but our chances of going there were diminished when we lost to St Dominic’s, but as usual we look forward to achieving another positive result in the 2023 Derby against Goudveld. I would say a pleasing score and as always a clean sheet will make my teammates and I very proud.

What are your plans for the future?

To win the Derby!
