e’ve all only recently recovered from a very busy festive season where some of us folks probably gave to the needy, hungry or homeless. However, it is important to remember that those who suffer don’t only need our help over the festive season, but throughout the year. Start 2015 the right way and lend a hand (or paw) to help the SOS Children’s villages or NSPCA! We’ve been inspired by the classic movie remake of Annie (to be released nationally in theatres on 30 January 2015). Annie is a young, happy foster kid who is also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York. She never goes anywhere without her trusty sidekick, her beloved dog Sandy.
We have Annie movie merchandise hampers (each consisting of an Annie lunchbox, pen and T-shirt) to give away to SEVEN lucky AWSUM readers. Baby Spinach and Strawberry Salad

Losing weight after the holidays always proves a huge challenge for most of us. Use these fitness apps to help shed the holiday flab and stick to your weight-loss goals …
YOU’LL NEED • 100 g baby spinach washed and drained • 100 g strawberries trimmed and quartered • ½ cucumber peeled deseeded and sliced • 1 tbsp poppy seeds • Salt and pepper to taste • Half a cup alfalfa sprouts rinsed

Neena Bredeveldt (Gr 6) took part in the National Mzanzi Beauty Pageant during the first week of the December holidays last year. They had to design an outfit made from recycled material and then model it. After this they had to show off their talents and Neena proved to be a real disco dancer! They also visited Butterfly World and made many new friends from all over South Africa. Neena achieved second place over all, with only 1 point difference between her and the girl who came first. Congratulations!

POOR LIFESTYLE CHOICES INCREASE CANCER RISK The percentage of cancer cases caused by unhealthy lifestyle factors is considerable and unnecessary: • 15% being overweight and not getting enough exercise • 5% consuming too much alcohol • 20 – 25% using tobacco or tobacco products • Experts estimate that cancer risk can be reduced by 30% if these

unhealthy lifestyle factors are excluded from our way of life. We encourage all Bolanders to make smart choices and embrace a balanced lifestyle in order to help reduce their cancer risk. Ons vertrou dat almal goed uitgerus is om die uitdagings wat 2015 vir ons mag inhou suksesvol aan te durf. ’n Spesiale woord van verwelkoming aan al ons nuwe leerders en ouers. Ons moedig ons leerders aan om betrokke te raak by die buitemuurse program van die skool. Sodoende word julle gou deel van die 100%@ Noord-Eind-familie. Dit is ’n feit dat betrokke kinders en ouers nie net ingelig is nie, maar ook gelukkig. Ons leerderinskrywings was meer as wat ons verwag het. Ons het dus nou hierdie jaar 4 graad R-klasse en 4 graad 1-klasse omdat ons nie te veel kinders in ’n klas wil hê nie. Vier nuwe opvoeders sluit by ons aan naamlik, mev. Anneldi van Niekerk (gr. R4), mejj. Elizma Bester (Pre-R2), Naomi Smit (KDA-LO) en mnr. Wicus de Bruyn (gr. 4.1). Mev. Nicole Hill (gr. 3.3) is tans ook met kraamverlof. Sy sal weer in April terugkeer. Mev. S. Loots is tydelik in haar pos aangestel. Hartlik welkom aan bogenoemde opvoeders. Ons vertrou dat julle ’n baie gelukkige verbintenis met ons skool sal hê!

Welkom aan al ons nuwe maatjies by die skool. Daar is sommer van dag een af aan die werk gespring en almal was baie opgewonde oor wat vir hulle in die groot skool en die jaar voorlê. Om na stories te luister wat juf. Carina lees en om in die sandput te speel, is altyd vir die kleintjies lekker.
NUWE OPVOEDERS
Ons verwelkom graag ons twee nuwe opvoeders by die WAJ-familie. Albei is baie veelsydig en gaan ook op buitemuurse gebied ’n groot verskil maak.
Ons is ook bly om twee nuwe opvoeders te verwelkom. Mnr. Nicky Lock (gr. 4) en me. Elzanne Visser (gr. 3) het nuut by ons aangesluit. Ons wens hulle alle sterkte toe. Hoogtepunte wat hierdie jaar beplan word is: ’n Konsert, Wintersportdag, Gholfdag, ’n Karnaval met ’n verskil en ’n Vroue-oggend. Daar sal ook begin beplan word vir die skool se eeufeesvieringe wat in 2019 sal plaasvind. Oudleerders word aangemoedig om die skool te kontak en hul kontakbesonderhede vir ons deur te gee. Ons wil reeds begin om ’n databasis op te bou. Baie voorspoed vir al ons medePaarliete.

Alex Stewart het in Desember aan die internasionale Zone VI Gimnastiekkompetisie in Namibië deelgeneem. Die top-6 Afrikalande het by die kompetisie teen mekaar deelgeneem. Sy het ’n algehele 4de plek behaal en die SA trampolienspan het ’n goue medalje gewen.
Wellington Golf Club hosted a Girls Love Golf day for nine wannabe golfers aged between 9 and 15 years. The girls played four holes from the 150 m mark and then joined a putting competition over four holes. Jaden Thompson won the junior section on 37.

Hugo Rust se jaarlikse swemgala was weereens ’n groot sukses en die rekords het behoorlik gespat! Die Goues het hulle stemme hees geskree en met die Geesbeker weggestap, terwyl die Bloues soos visse in die water was en met die Swembeker weggeloop het.

RHEEDER HOU HMS SE NAAM HOOG! Baie geluk aan Corli Rheeder, HMS se DUX-leerling van 2014, wat op 14 Januarie 2015 by Leeuwenhof ’n toekenning by premier Helen Zille ontvang het. Curtley Davids was die eerste leerder wat een van die TERRIBLE TWINS (Wiskunde en Skeinat) bloedneus geslaan het. Hy het 96% in Wiskunde en 96% in Rekeningkunde gekry. Hy en Sharfa Abrahams het albei VYF A’s gekry.

LABORI-LEERDER STYG UIT BO “BEPERKING” Nic-Strauss le Roux is op 3½-jarige ouderdom gediagnoseer as akademies onopvoedbaar. Dit was vir sy ouers ’n geweldige skok en traumatiese ervaring – veral die destydse diagnose dat hul pragtige donkerkopseuntjie op skool nooit sou kon vorder nie! Mnr. en mev. Herman le Roux van Wellington het geweier om hierdie verdoemende bevinding te aanvaar. In die geloof skryf hulle toe hul 4-jarige seuntjie gedurende 1999 in by die Paarlskool vir Serebraal- en Spesifieke Leergestremdes in Brackenfell. Met absolute toewyding, deursettingsvermoë en harde werk van Nic-Strauss se kant, ondersteun deur twee pragtige, positiewe en betrokke ouers, ontwikkel hierdie spesiale seun binne Paarlskool se gespesialiseerde terrapeutiese en onderrigmilieu in so ’n mate dat daar besluit word om hierdie merkwaardige leerder die geleentheid te bied om by hoofstroomonderwys te kan inskakel. En dit was dan ook die grootste toets vir Nic-
Strauss, tot in daardie stadium van sy jong lewe. Het hy werklik bo die destydse verdoemende diagnose uitgestyg? Is die Onderwysowerhede se beleid van inklusiwiteit, soos vervat in Witskrif 6, realisties en haalbaar? Kan ’n leerder van ’n spesiale skool suksesvol oorgeplaas word na ’n hoofstroomskool? Die antwoorde op al dié vrae is ’n onteenseglike JA! Nadat sy ouers die nodige navorsing gedoen het, is besluit om hom by die Hoërskool Labori in die Paarl in te skryf. Dié gewoon akademiese skool spesialiseer benewens die akademiese baan ook in Tegniese en Rekenaarstudierigtings. En omdat dit ’n kleiner skool is, is daar ook meer persoonlike kontak tussen die opvoeders en leerders. Nic-Strauss het homself ten volle vir sy nuwe skool gegee – nie net akademies nie. Hy speel rugby en krieket, dien in sy skool se Sub-VRL en onderskei hom as knap sportanalis en -statistikus. En dan natuurlik akademies – hy slaag graad 12 met ’n gemiddelde persentasie van net onder die 70% en verwerf
universiteitsvrystelling. Ons eer hierdie jong man se baie spesiale akademiese prestasie! Nic-Strauss le Roux het bewys dat drome en ideale waar gemaak word deur harde werk, deursettingsvermoë, passie, deur jouself te gee en met dankbaarheid en nederigheid jou oë altyd op jou Skepper te fokus. Hy het reeds ingeskryf in ’n sportwetenskaplike studierigting – ’n rigting waarin Nic-Strauss nog gaan uitstyg!

Baie geluk aan die matrieks van 2014 wat almal geslaag het, met ook geen vakdruipelinge nie. Sewe van ons leerders het ʼn gemiddelde A-simbool behaal! Sestig van ons 68 leerlinge het toelating tot ʼn B-graad en die ander 8 leerders, dus 12%, het toelating tot ʼn diploma-kursus aan ʼn tersiêre inrigting verwerf – ons is trots op die feit dat al ons leerlinge ʼn tersiêre kwalifikasie kan behaal. Baie sterkte aan ons huidige matriekklas. Ons sien uit daarna om te sien waartoe julle in 2015 in staat is!

Ons is baie trots op ons eerste Protea-krieketspeler, Stiaan van Zyl. Stiaan het gedurende die Windies se toer in Suid-Afrika sy toetsdebuut vir die Proteas gemaak. In sy eerste toets teen WesIndie op Centurion in Pretoria het hy 101 lopies nie uit nie in sy eerste kolfbeurt aangeteken. Dit is ’n ongelooflike prestasie vir enige kolwer

Dit is met groot dankbaarheid teenoor ons hemelse Vader wat ons terugkyk op die uitslae van 2014. Baie dankie aan die leerders, onderwysers en ouers wat meegewerk het aan hierdie uitslae.

Ons is baie trots op ons eerste krieketspan se kaptein, Luke Philander. Luke het die afgelope vakansie deelgeneem aan die Coca Cola-o.18-krieketweek as lid van die Bolandspan. Tydens hierdie toernooi was Luke een van die span se groot uitblinkers. Hy het uitstekend geboul in elke wedstryd en het ook waardevolle bydraes met die kolf gelewer. Na afloop van hierdie toernooi is Luke gekies vir die Cobras -o.18-krieketspan wat gedurende Januarie in Stellenbosch aan die Nasionale o.18week deelgeneem het. Hier het Luke weer eens uitstekend presteer. Hy het in sy 5 wedstryde 7 paaltjies geneem vir slegs 126 lopies. Hy het ook ’n waardevolle 22 lopies nie uit nie aangeteken in die Cobras se oorwinning oor die Knights. Ons is werklik trots op Luke en ons glo dat ’n blink toekoms op hom wag. Hy is nou eers in graad 12 en hy gaan heel waarskynlik later in die jaar weer vir die Boland o.18- en Cobras-o.18 spanne speel.

Ons jaar skop af met ’n spoggeleentheid! Die 2014 Matriek se 18 A-gemiddelde leerlinge is vereer. Ons gee ook erkenning aan die top-5 akademiese presteerders in elke graad vir 2014. Ons gasspreker was mnr. Doubell Charmberlain, Dux-leerling 1993. Baie geluk aan elke leerder met sy/ haar prestasie! Baie geluk aan Charles Grobbelaar (Dux-leerling) met sy mooi persentasie van 90,2%. Hugenote het vanjaar weer ’n mooi 100%-slaagsyfer gekry.

Ons nuwe inwoners van Huis Hugenoot het saam met hul mede-inwoners ’n heerlike eerste naweek saam beleef. Die naweek is afgesluit met ’n bergstaptog.
