QR (Quick Response) codes are popping up everywhere!

Perhaps you’ve seen them in magazines and on billboards. On a web page or even on someone’s t-shirt?

Well, it’s official. AWSUM now has them too!

Here’s how they work …

quick (hence the Q in QR) and easy way to link the physical world with the virtual world.

WHAT ARE QR CODES? Well, they are similar to normal barcodes you find on everyday products. QR codes are chunks of information encoded in a two-dimensional graphic.

Whereas a supermarket barcode consists of vertical lines, a QR code encodes info vertically and horizontally – so you can get more info on it. You scan QR codes with your mobile phone or tablet.

HOW DO YOU READ QR CODES? These are the two essential things you need to read a QR code: • a mobile smart phone or tablet with a camera • a piece of software called a QR reader: this you can download for free from most app stores.

• Open the QR reader app on your phone. Point your phone camera at the bar code and snap!

WHERE CAN YOU FIND QR CODES? A QR code might contain nutritional information on your breakfast cereal box. Or it can contain travel information at your bus stop, or a link to an online timetable. A code can be included on your business card, e.g. to include a direct link to your online CV, or links to resources such as an online video.

If you suspect that your child is being bullied it may leave you feeling angry, powerless, hurt or frustrated on their behalf. Here are some tips on what you can do to assist and support your child if he or she is being bullied at school:

Vertical plants and gardens are all the rage at the moment. Try this fun, inexpensive and quick-to-make hanging pot plant and be sure to impress!

You will need: • plant, - thick rope, • round margarine tub or similar container with lid, • terracotta planter

Cut a big hole in the lid and a smaller hole in the bottom of the tub.

I’ve recently stumbled across this fabulous web- and facebook page called quirkymomma.com.

They have brilliant home and parenting tips PLUS activities for the entire family, covering all ages from babies to teens. In short, I think they’re AWSUM!

One of the clever tips I found was how to make your kitchen sink shine, I just had to share it with you:

“Lemons and salt are all you need to make your stainless steel sink shine. Perk: After you wiped out the sink, chop up the lemon and run it through the garbage disposal. Your garbage disposal will be clean and your kitchen will smell wonderful.”

A TART WITH A DIFFERENCE!

Beetroot tart with baby rocket (serves 4)

This is such a simple tart, yet it always gets a “wow” from my guests because it looks so beautiful on a plate. If beetroot is not your favourite, use grilled tomatoes and basil.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1 sheet ready-made puff pastry, 1 egg, beaten Topping 1 cup cream cheese ½ cup heavy cream juice of one lemon 4 large cooked beetroots, thinly sliced and patted dry Salad ¼ cup olive oil ½ tablespoon lemon juice salt and pepper 2 cups baby rocket ¼ cup Parmesan shavings WHAT TO DO: Preheat the oven to 200◦C. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and then roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out four discs with an 11.5cm round pastry cutter.

Using a sharp knife, lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm from the edge, taking care not to cut through the pastry. Brush the edges with the beaten egg and place the pastry discs on to a non-stick baking sheet. Poke a few holes in the pastry and place in the oven on the middle shelf.

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool.

Arrange the beetroot slices on top of the cheese mixture. Be sure that the beetroot slices are relatively dry so the pink juice does not run on to the white cream.

Salad Whisk the olive oil and lemon juice together in a small bowl.

Season with salt and pepper. Pour this vinaigrette over the baby rocket and toss.

Educare and Grade R Outting The Educare and Grade R learners visited the aquarium and museum. They also visited Fairlands Old Age Home where they spoiled the grannies and grandpas with gifts of soap that they collected for them and also provided some entertainment.

Grade 4 Tour Day

George Randell Grade 4 learners enjoyed a day tour of historical East London. Some of the places they visited were the beautiful St Peters Church on the West Bank, the Hood Point lighthouse as well as the Footprints Museum at Nahoon reef.

67 Minutes

Georgie family Abrahams gave their 67 minutes for Mandela at the local Vincent Park shopping centre recently by knitting squares for a blanket. Even Dad Abrahams was given a pair of knitting needles and wool – and a very quick knitting lesson!

Patrol Team

George Randell learners were treated to a dog show recently. Not only was it very entertaining, but the strong message of care for one’s pets and the responsibility it entails was emphasised.

The dedicated George Primary scholar patrol team under the guidance of Mrs Ayivor, guides learners in crossing the very busy road to the school every morning. No matter the weather, these youngsters take their role of service to the school and their fellow learners very seriously.

We celebrated our 52nd birthday in true Preppie style this year. Mrs Carey Kurten, our guest speaker, inspired the girls, staff and parents alike. She highlighted the importance of gratitude in our lives

Hospital Visit Grade R The girls hold up gifts from our guest speaker, Mrs Kurten. She painted these stones with help from her children and gave them to us as a reminder in our classrooms that we should be grateful for small blessings in our lives

Children 4 Children

The annual Children4Children campaign was a huge success with the preppies collecting a staggering 575 cartons of milk. Thank you to our families for generously donating to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Selborne Swop

We were pleased to welcome Selborne Pups when they came to visit this term. Much fun was had in the PrePrimary playground and the boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company.

Easter

To celebrate Easter, Grade R girls dressed up in Easter regalia, searched for Easter eggs and had a fun picnic in the sun.

The house teams balloons were released and cupcakes enjoyed by all.

To complete the theme of “People Who Help Us”, Grade R visited Beacon bay Life Hospital. What a wonderful learning opportunity. The girls even had a tour of the brand new paediatric ward.

Grade 00 Baking

Following our Eat-a-Rainbow” discussions at school, Grade 00 designed interesting treats using fruits and vegetables of all colours.

Percussion and Marimba Success

We congratulate all who participated in the recent Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod.

Our choir sang magnificently and the recorder group did us proud. The combined Percussion and Marimba Band won the trophy this year. Well done to all our musicians, especially the pianists who put in many hours of practising.

Preppies throughout the second term Staff members have already seen shining examples of these values from the girls inn and around school.

Sport - Term 2:

Our sports teams have proved this term that hard work pays off. Our girls have been training diligently across the sporting codes and some have had the opportunity of competing against other schools.

A group of Happy GPS Hikers on part of the Amatole Hiking Trail overlooking the Cata Mountains. They completed the Dontsa Loop section at the end of last term.

Biathle Champion! Emily Raath has, once again, qualified to represent South Africa this year at the World Games to be held in Guatamala in the first two weeks of October. We wish her luck!

Robyn Becker obtained her Provincial Colours when she took part in the SA Schools Individual Chess Tournament in Bloemfontein at the beginning of July.

The Pre-Primary grabbed their plastic bikes and jumped to their feet for this year’s hotly contested Navy vs Orange inter-house athletics day.

Grade 11 Adventure day

Grade 11 Adventure Day – Paying it forward. The grade 11’s spent the day with the abused and abandoned babies and toddlers at The King’s Children’s home safe house. They have committed to return with donations of nappies, formula and wet wipes for the home.

Drummies determined to make their mark at National Championships The Lilyfontein Drummies squad taking a break from their hectic training schedule. While the rest of the school was on holiday, the Drummies practised from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday of the first week for the upcoming National Championships.

Grade 6 NS Project

The Lilyfontein Interact group got together on the first Saturday of the school holidays to help paint the completed dormitory for JESUS THE ROCK MISSIONS. This facility will offer love and care over weekends to children with very difficult home situations.

S.A Foundation for Economic and Financial Education (SAFEFE) EMS Competition

The Grade 6’s were tasked with creating a water filter from a recycled 2 litre plastic bottle, some bits from home and the natural resources they could find around the school grounds.

Beaconhurst Primary/High School AUGUST 2014 13 Student Teachers

On Tuesday, 22 July 2014, Beaconhurst School welcomed 11 student teachers from the University of Fort Hare to our school. The student teachers are all in their final year of studying and will be teaching a total of 30 lessons each during their school experience.

Supports Mandela Day

Due to Mandela Day falling during the school holidays, Beaconhurst School decided to have Mandela Day on Friday, 25 July. Both staff and learners were involved in different community projects. The Beaconhurst Foundation Phase learners brought dog and cat food donations to school.

The Intermediate and High School learners donated non-perishable foods. The Beaconhurst Staff were divided into three groups – one group went to the SPCA to take a donation of dog and cat food and then the staff assisted with various tasks.

Another group of Beaconhurst Staff, armed with black bags and gloves descended on the streets of Beacon Bay and did a general clean up of the area. The third group of Beaconhurst Staff went to African Angels school in Chintsa to give the school the nonperishable items.

Fun Walk

Our Grade 1 learners thoroughly enjoyed their first Fun Walk. They walked from the school to Bonza Bay Beach. The section along the beach was the most fun.

Nahoon Derby Day

On Saturday, 26 July, the u/8 rugby boys played 4 matches at the Nahoon Laerskool Derby Day. They won two and lost two. The boys played their hearts out and can be proud of their achievement.

After our rather wet Fun Walk on the 26th of July , the Beaconhurst Primary and High School staff members escaped to a fun afternoon of “team building” at Extreme Golf at Beacon Bay Crossing and thoroughly enjoyed their lunch.

EarlyAct Club celebrates Mandela Day

EarlyAct is a service club for learners in grades 4-7. It is sponsored by The Beacon Bay Rotary Club and it provides opportunities for our children to participate in active citizenship in a culturally diverse, democratic society.

As part of the annual Mandela Day celebrations, the EarlyAct Club spent their 67 minutes of service making care coupons and Marie biscuit faces for loved ones. Keep a look out for other EarlyAct projects running this term. We look forward to your continued help and support.

Hudson Park High School Physical

Our Derby Day against Selborne was as tough as can be expected and true to tradition, it turned out to be the classic clash everyone was waiting for. Even though we knew it was not going to be easy to beat Selborne this year the 1st XV Rugby Team held their nerve to keep the final score at 10-18. All supporters were proud on the day and we accepted defeat but with the knowledge that Hudson does not need to stand back for the Colleges.

Academic

For some the June exams were a wake-up call to put shoulder to the wheel for the rest of the year and for others a step closer to reach their goals and dreams. Three students at Hudson recently received their Cum Laude blazers during an Academic Awards Assembly. Rachel Gardiner, Natasha Marr and Lutho Mngoma join Anri van Onselen and Kate Anderson as the top academics in Hudson. One has to ask the question if the top male pupils are going to take up the challenge.

Pastoral

There are many clubs and societies at Hudson Park which present opportunities for Hudsonians to serve the community, both within our school’s boundaries, and outside. There are quite a few listed on our website under the Pastoral section.

One that deserves special mention is our award-winning St John 1st Aid detachment, led by Mrs Poovan and Mrs Kuhlenthal; it is the biggest in the Eastern Cape and has significant numbers of learners each year taking their Level 1 and 2 assessments. These Hudsonians provide a service during winter derby encounters, a service which is the envy of most schools in the province.

The standard was of an exceptionally high standard. Border IPT Hockey

Certain students participated in the creative writing for the Grahamstown Eisteddfod. They performed very well.

Special congratulations go to Siphelele Lolwana who achieved a Double Gold.

During the past holiday Alridge MacMaster and Tando Cekiso took part in Border IPT hockey matches. Alridge was part of the U/16A team which played in Durban and Tando played for the U/18B team in Pietermaritzburg.

Border Junior Bottom Fish Nationals The Border U/19 team, captained by Grade 10 learner Cylie Clarke, took part in the Junior Bottom Fish Nationals held in Port St Francis from 1-5 April 2014. Nine U/19 and five U/16 teams contested this event. The Border boys struggled initially but took a good lead into the final day and managed to claim the gold medals. Western Province claimed silver and Eastern Province bronze. Well done Cylie!

Minquiz 2014

The Minquiz Nationals were hosted at the Mintec Headquarters in Randburg, Johannesburg. Young scientists from all the corners of South Africa were selected as representatives of their provinces to battle it out for the grand prize. During our stay in Johannesburg we enjoyed various team building exercises, career advice and a motivational speech by Siya Xuza. We wrote the Minquiz test and we achieved a score that enabled us to progress to the second round. After three sets of grueling questions, the Eastern Cape Province came second overall.

Stirling High School 16 AUGUST 2014 SACEE Public Speaking Competitions After winning the Rotary and the SACEE Public Speaking Competitions earlier this year, Head Girl, Nathina Pakade earned the official stamp as the top speaker in Border when she won the final round of the Young Communicators Competition in Bisho, on Saturday 26 July. Nathina now advances to the Provincial round of the competition, where she will vie for the opportunity to represent the Eastern Cape in the Interprovincial competition.

Acapella Vocal Group

The Stirling High School Acapella Vocal Group travelled to Riga, the Capital of Latvia, in July to participate in the 8th World Choir Games. 27 000 Singers from 73 Nations came together to compete for the title of World Champion in their respective categories. The Stirling singers did not compete this year but participated in a friendship concert with 5 other choirs - Austrian, Latvian, Canadian and two American choirs. They attended workshops by The King’s Singers, The Real Group and the world’s leading choral composer Ēriks Ešenvalds with the Latvian State Choir. They also attended the concerts by these groups amongst other big events that took place during the World Choir games.

One of the highlights was singing in an open air mass choir surrounded by voices from all the Baltic Nations and accompanied by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. In total there

Merit Awards

were 50 000 people - audience and singers. Another highlight was the master class with Nicol Matt - the conductor of the Chamber Choir of Europe. He was blown away at the vocal group’s performance and was astounded to hear that they were not entering the competition as he felt they stood a very good chance to win. This is definitely a great motivation to enter the 9th World Choir Games in Russia, Soci 2016.

National Big Band Congratulations to Samuel Burger for being selected as the drummer for the Standard Bank National Schools’ Big Band for the second year in a row. The following Stirling students were selected for the National ‘B’ Band: Simon Webster (Tenor Sax), Daniel du Plessis (Baritone Sax), Phillip Jordaan (Trumpet), Nathina Pakade (Trombone), Jody Williams (Bass), Nqobile Mbhele (Voice). Well done to Jenna Breetzke and Amy Kilian who took part in the Buffalo City Metro Cross Country over the weekend.

Jenna Breetzke came 1st in U/13 Amy Kilian came 6th in U/14 They both qualify to represent Buffalo City at the East Cape Championships on the 2nd August.

Top Schools Squash Tournament

Clarendon qualified as the Border provincial school to be invited to this National tournament, after winning our playoff match against Queenstown Girls’ High School in April. The 8 top schools in the country are now playing off for top honours at Epworth Girls’ School in Pietermaritzburg. Eunice and Clarendon are the only government schools represented at the tournament. Clarendon narrowly lost to St Mary’s DSG (Pretoria), drawing 3-3 in matches but losing on the count out, and won comfortably against Springfield Convent from Cape Town. Following a win against Kingswood, Clarendon ended up ranked 5th overall. We are very proud of our girls achievements.

Supporter Clothing Clarendon has launched a new range of Supporter Clothing as part of our aim to become more visible at Deby Days and national events. As one of the Top 25 Schools in South Africa, it is appropriate that we offer parents and friends of the school an opportunity to support our girls in style.
