GROW A MO FOR 30 DAYS
Nothing brings strict teachers, lovely librarians, class clowns, and everyone on campus together like Movember. Rallying around the moustache is a fantastic way to unite a university or school. The level of education doesn’t matter when it comes to having fun while raising funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.
DON’T MO ALONE
There is strength in numbers, so recruit your whole class or the entire school to join the hairy journey by creating or joining a Movember team. Moustaches are Movember. Thin and wispy or thick and full – the size of a Mo doesn’t matter as long it’s in accordance with the official rules: no beards or goatees.

Start a conversation about the importance of men’s health by working it into a class project or

Spread the word of the Mo wherever possible to drum up support on campus. You could target your course email list, put posters up, post about Movember on Facebook or give a pre-class shout out. Contact the sports team and the
other extra-circular associations to see if they want to join your team (or start their own). Once you’ve built your team, keep the momentum going by finding prizes for the best Mo of the week. If you can’t make it to the nearest official Movember Gala, host your own! Award the titles of Man of Movember and Miss Movember for your school. Challenge your teacher to a Mo-off. The best Mo at the end of the month chooses the other’s costume at the Movember Party.

7 ways to make fitness fun! No matter how much you love your favourite fitness class, exercise DVD or running route, doing the same thing over and over is bound to get boring after a while. Change the venue To make your workouts more fun, try switching up the location. Make the most of sunny days: go hiking, go for a run through the local park or do a spot of yoga in your back garden. For lazy days, you could even do your workouts in front of the TV.

Exercise to your favourite music To make your workouts more enjoyable, try putting together an exercise playlist of your favourite songs. Not only can music boost your mood, it is also a great way to boost your motivation and can provide distraction and entertainment while you exercise. Have a happy and fit summer!

The Gonubie Archery Club ended off a busy season with a tour to Cape Town to participate in the Nationals in October. Besides taking part in the tournament, they managed to take some time out for sight-seeing in the Fairest Cape and a scenic stay-over at Storms River.
Marimba Tour
Gonubie Primary’s Marimba Band recently went on a tour to the Tsitsikamma area where they visited Tsitsikamma Primary School and ran a workshop for the local children and entertained them with some traditional dancing. Fortunately there was also time to take in some of the sights before they ended their tour with a concert in Kareedouw on their way home.

Beaconhurst Primary/High School 6 NOVEMBER 2014 Students excel at SA Goju Kai Championships Well done Shanay Archery and Stacey and Aiden Weiss! The three karate students represented Border at the South African Goju Kai Championships held in Johannesburg at Wits University on 31st August 2014. There were over 200 boys and 100 girls who competed in 32 categories in the children’s division. Border achieved 5th position, with the Beaconhurst karate students bringing home 3 bronze medals and 1 silver medal. The event follows a successful 2013 World Championship held in India, with our SA team being named the ultimate champions for

the second time in a row. We look forward to repeating this achievement at the 2017 World Championships in Canada.
U13A Cricket Tour
The u13A cricket boys took part in the Co-Ed Cricket Tournament in Port Elizabeth during the holiday. They played three games against Sunridge, Westering and Handhaaf. The boys made the school proud with their great sportsmanship on and off the field and they were able to come home with their heads held high.
EarlyAct members were invited to attend the Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer annual fundraising event at Hemingways Mall in September. These “cupcake angels” helped sell cupcakes to raise funds for this very worthy cause.
Interschool Equestrian Tournament
Our Primary and High School Equestrian Teams took part in the Border Inter Schools Equestrian Tournament. The Tournament comprised of Turnouts, Dressage, Jumping and Handy Hunter. The girls excelled in all the events and the Primary School team tied second overall with Stirling.

Beaconhurst High Prefects 2015 On Friday the 17th of October the prefects for 2015 were inducted. The head prefect is Darren Milne and deputy head is Vuyolwethu Cungcu. The rest of the prefect body consist of: Astara Jurectic, Jessica Kenny, Kelly Maguire, Sinovuyo Maneli, Lauren Newcombe, Aliva-Dawn Ngamlana, Athandile Nomatyindyo, Gezelle Oakes, Denika Petzer, Monique Potgieter, Rosette Sihlangu, Yolisa Singaphi, Bernice Smith, Sazi Tshangana, Adande Tyokolwana, Megan Vlok and Stephanie Warren.
Beaconhurst was without a principal from the beginning of this year and was ably managed by the Acting Principal, Mr Doug Prior. Our previous headmaster, Mr Peter Mey, retired at the end of 2013 and left a void that was hard to fill. On 3 October 2014, Mr Aubrey Norman was welcomed into the Beaconhurst family and took his place at the helm of the school. Mr Norman did his two years of National Service and qualified as an Electrician. He worked as an Engineering Technician for Spoornet for nine years. In April 1991, Mr Norman began his career as an educator and joined the staff of Port Rex Technical High School. It was during this time that Mr Norman studied education part time. In four, short years, Mr Norman was appointed Acting Head of Department. He held this position until 2009, when he was eventually appointed in an official capacity
Second Chance
Learners at Beaconhurst had the opportunity to gain valuable life experience when representatives from Second Chance came to visit from 20-22 October. These representatives shared their life stories with pupils and cautioned them against substance abuse and informed them of the consequences of it. Pupils had the opportunity to ask the representatives questions and receive advice about peer pressure, friends, and life goals or dreams. Teachers and parents also had sessions where they were given guidelines on what to do with the children at school and at home, as well as how to make a safe, healthy environment for the learners.

Second Chance was a reality check on how dangerous substance abuse really is and how common it is amongst school children and it truly prepared Beaconhurst learners on how to act in difficult situations.

SA Schools Adventure Racing Championships On 10 and 11 October Lilyfontein School’s u/13 and u/15 Adventure racing teams took part in the SA Schools Adventure Racing Championships that was held at Stanford Lake College in Limpopo. The teams set out on their
race at 04h00 on Saturday morning and were faced with thickening mist and pouring rain throughout the race. It took a great deal of perseverance and determination to reach the finish line. Congratulations to our U/13 team (Jade Underwood, Ethan de Beer, Jarrod Rehse and Matthew Niemand) for coming home with a silver! What an achievement and a job well done.
To our U/15 team (Téo Jordaan, Johann Van Der Walt, Mattheus Van Der Walt and Danielle Roets) well done on your efforts. Due to the weather and injuries they were forced to withdraw.
Lilyfontein Takes Third Place in the Provincial SAFEFE EMS Competition
Lilyfontein Drummie Squad in the top 10 in S.A
The Lilyfontein Drummies squad participated in the SAMCA Nationals which were held in Cape town during the October School holidays. The squad moved up from fifteenth position in South Africa to tenth. Aphelele Jali came 9th in the leader competition.
Johannes van der Walt, Gandhi Jafta and John Georg Weschta took 3rd place in the provincial SA Foundation of Economics and Financial Education EMS competition.
Lilyfontein Equestrian Team Excels The Lilyfontein Equestrian team is stamping its mark on the local scene with major wins in Polocrosse and a group of 5 riders representing the Eastern Cape at the National Championships. Congratulations to Caroline Evans (Gr 12), Robyn Fenn (Gr 10), Ashtan Drake (Gr 11) and Anya Nash (Gr 6) and Kirsten Nash (Gr 5) who qualified for the National Championships in Gauteng. Robyn Fenn (Grade 10) won C division at the Polocrosse competition in PE and is a member of the Eastern Cape Equestrian team.
Caroline Evans at Interschools After only four years of riding, Caroline Evans is ranked 5th in the country in the South African Schools League. The four riders above her are in a different discipline which makes her 1st in the country in Dressage, Showing and Jumping. She was awarded Vitrix Laudorum at the Royal Natal Show, Overall Supreme Showing Champion at two different shows as well as Supreme Overall Working Champion. The Overall Supreme Champion is the best rider of all age groups.

Lilyfontein Learner Shows her Karting Skills
Shannon Jackson (Lilyfontein Grade 9) currently leads both the Eastern Province and Border Clubman’s Class Championships in karting. She is the younger of only 2 women karting in the Eastern Cape. She recently came 2nd for the day in the Rotax Max African Open Challenge (International Event) and 1st Driver of the Day in the Algoa Karting Club Regional Event.

We are proud of our two learners, Tatum Knox in 1 Lezar and Noah Honey in 2 Heaton, who won double gold and gold respectively. Two Grade 2 classes also won double golds for their class poetry. They are Mrs Heaton’s and Mrs Breetzke’s classes.
Matric Exams
Our matric exams have started and to date everything is going very well at Hudson Park. Mrs Christalla Ferreira, on duty in her last matric exam as the Chief Invigilator, has a team of matric teachers working very closely with her. Mrs Cathy Van Der Merwe will be the Academic Head taking over from Mrs Ferreira. She has already obviously taken over a number of the functions as a lead into 2015. Hudson Park High School takes this opportunity to wish all the Matrics of 2014 success for the future and we wish them good luck for their future endeavours.
Academic
We are very proud that Hudson Park has been ranked on 2 criteria nationally in the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Circle of Excellence Schools. At the Conference in Grahamstown a few weeks ago we were called up to receive 3rd place awards in the 2 categories: Personal Initiative and Successful Fellows. It is encouraging that all 3 of our 2014 nominees made it right through to the final camp. We await the outcome with excitement. Pastoral
Our Valedictory service was good and Christalla Ferreira’s speech was very well received. The day started with our traditional breakfast with the matrics and a period of time receiving instructions followed by the very well received staff song sung to the matrics, and then the ceremony itself. Our best wishes obviously accompany our matrics as they negotiate the final school academic hurdle. The Service Prefects provided KFC for lunch for our ground and cleaning staff in the Eagles’ View from money raised at the ‘Serious Fun’
Cultural
Hudson Park won the East Cape Debating competition and Maya Godden was chosen as best speaker. She will represent South Africa next year as will Mihlali Xozwa who goes to New York for the International Model UN Conference. Our 2nd place in the East Cape Drama Festival was significant (we have won twice and come 2nd
twice). “The Spirit of Christmas” last Wednesday night entertained a number of pupils and parents as well visitors from a number of Retirement Centres. The programme consisted of music, dance and song. The Senior plays held last week Friday was both entertaining and serious but the level of acting out of the top drawer.

Concert. The Qhayiya Choir entertained. The Santa Shoe Box campaign was highly successful at Hudson Park. 120 boxes were filled and there was much efficiency and enthusiasm from our prefects and Interact members to make this a huge success.
Summer sports are in full swing with Water Polo fixtures, Galas and Cricket fixtures all happening on a regular basis. • Rhys Poovan is to be congratulated on his 7th place in the World Biathle Championships in Guatemala (sadly he was ill with German measles). • 2014 produced 9 SA Reps from Hudson Park. • 12 Border Cricket team members are Hudsonians including the Captain and Vice-Captain of the U15s. Our hosting of the Peter Cuff U14 Water Polo Competition was excellent – both boys and girls teams were runners up.

Hunter Day
Hunter Day took place at the Prep and was enjoyed by all.
The Border Intershool’s Riding Competition was held on 18 October at the Border Equestrian Club, Gonubie Farmers Hall. Clarendon High School for Girls entered three teams of five riders in each team. The teams were named Clarendon Hickstead, Clarendon Glocks, Clarendon Gainsborough. The
Clarendon teams competed against each other as well as two teams from Lilyfontein, and one team from Beaconhurst. All the riders competed in four disciplines, namely: Turnout, Dressage, Handy Hunter, and Show Jumping. Clarendon Hickstead won Turnout. Clarendon Gainsborough won Handy
Hunter and Show Jumping. Overall points tally for the day placed Clarendon Hickstead in first place, Clarendon Gainsborough in second place, and Clarendon Glocks in fourth place. The Clarendon 3rd team were placed 2nd in the competition and the Clarendon 1st team won the Border Inter-Schools Equestrian Event.

George Randell Primary 10 NOVEMBER 2014 GEORGIES GRADE 7 TOUR
George Randell Primary Grade 7 learners recently embarked on their tour of the Oudtshoorn area. This annual tour gives the learners the opportunity of bringing to life the History, Geography and Science lessons taught throughout their primary school years, as well as the opportunity of experiencing some of the
wonders of our beautiful country. The magnificent Cango Caves were one of the tour’s highlights, culminating in the opportunity to make handmade clay pots – a hands-on experience in the true sense of the word. And off course, a visit to this area HAS to include a visit to an ostrich farm!
A leadership course which included an obstacle course encouraged teamwork and perseverance – life skills that are essential for well-balanced individuals. The 5 day tour ended in beautiful Knysna with a visit to the Featherbed Nature Reserve and a visit to The Heads.
Selborne College
SELBORNE COLLEGE SPORT RESULTS Rowing ZRC Regatta held at Redhouse near Port Elizabeth on Saturday 25 October 2014. Selborne College rowed against St Andrews and Grey High School at the ZRC Regatta. The following crews won their races: 1st Double, 2nd Eight, 2nd Four, 3rd Four, U16B Four, U16C Doubles, U15A Octople and U15B Double. The 1st Eight, Ben Godfrey in the 1st Sculls, David Taylor in U15A Sculls, Tristan Deutschmann in the U15B Sculls, Luc Callebaut in U15C Sculls, U15B Quad and U15A Double all came second in their respective races. Knysna Regatta held on 18 October 2014 Selborne rowed against Bishops, SACS, Rondebosch, St Andrews, Grey High School and Somerset College in the Knysna Regatta. The following crews won their 1000m races at the event: U15A Quad, U15B Quad, 2nd Four, 3rd Four. The following crews came second: 1st Eight,1st Four and 2nd Eight. The u16A Four was placed third. The 1st Eight and 2nd Eight competed in the 6km Heads Regatta on the Sunday. The 1st Eight shared the win with St Andrews in a very rare dead heat. The 2nd Eight won their race. Waterpolo Pearson Stayers Waterpolo Tournament The Selborne 1st Waterpolo team finished second in this tournament losing to Grey PE in the final. The team went unbeaten in all there pool games only loosing at the death. Results as follows: Selborne beat Grey Bloem 1st (10-3), beat Pearson 2nd (24-0), beat Dale 1st (23-0), beat Outeniqua 1st (25-0), drew with Grey PE 1st (4-4), beat Hudson Park 1st (172) in the quarter final and beat Selborne 2nd (9-2) in the semi-final. The team had a tough final and went down 6-13 to Grey PE. Callan Dewar and Cole Van Tonder played well in the final. At the conclusion of the tournament Ian Donovan was nominated as beat goal-keeper and Dale Heath best defender. At the same tournament, the Selborne 2nd team

produced fanatic results. They finished third overall, beating four 1st teams in the Eastern Cape. There results were as follows: Selborne 2nd beat Kingswood (502), beat Glenwood (123), drew Grey PE 2nd (4-4), beat Hudson park 1st (12-3), lost Pearson 1st (2-5), beat Stirling 1st (2-0), beat Grey Bloem 1st (7-2) in the Quarter Final and lost to Selborne 1st (2-9) in the semi-final. They beat Pearson 1st (6-3) to finish 3rd overall in the tournament. Regardt Kitching, Daniel Ryan, Luke Johnson and Brad Johnson played well for the 2nd team.

The Stirling Big Band was invited to perform at the prestigious Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival at the Sandton Convention Centre. On route to Johannesburg they performed at St Andrews’ College in Bloemfontein and they also performed at Johannesburg’s newest Jazz Club called The Orbit. Stirling Jazz certainly gets around!
NOVEMBER 2014 11 Water Polo Team
The Stirling Girls’ 1st Water Polo team travelled to Kwazulu-Natal in September to compete in the St Anne’s College 1st Team Water Polo Tournament in Hilton and won the tournament beating Clarendon 3-1 in the final. The Stirling Girls’ 1st Team and the Girls’ U15 Team took first place in each of their age groups at the Clarendon Stayers’ Tournament on 18 October. Girls U15 results: v DSG won 15-1, v Collegiate won 8-1, v Alex B won 18-0, v Clarendon GU13 won 17-0 (semi final), v Pearson won 6-4 (final). Girls 1st results: v Hudson Park won 10-1, Clarendon 2nd won 19-0, v Collegiate drew 4-4, v DSG won 4-1 (semi final), v Clarendon won 5-1 (final).
Hockey
The Stirling Girls’ 1st Hockey Team embarked on a tour to Holland from 26 September – 11 October. They travelled to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Zoetermeer & Boxmeer. The girls played a total of eight matches against various clubs in Holland. The results are as follows: Gouda lost 3-1, Capelle drew 1-1, Klein Zwitserland 0-1, Rotterdam lost 0-1, Goes won 1-0, Eindhoven drew 2-2, Boxmeer drew 1-1 and Boekel drew 2-2. The girls were also able to enjoy a coaching clinic hosted by Simon Organ, one of the top Hockey coaches in Holland.
