Two Lilyfontein High School learners took part in the SANESA Schools league second round in Queenstown 7 March. Caroline Evans on Adagio came 1st in Dressage Novice 2, Dressage Novice 3, Working Hunter, Ideal Time Jumping and Performance Riding level 7. Ashtan Drake on Mickey achieved 1st in Equitation and 2nd in Ideal Time Jumping, Competition Jumping, Working Riding and Performance Riding.

1st Team Rugby moves into the big Leagues

The Lilyfontein School 1ST XV played against Stirling 1st XV on 6 March 2014. The boys showed a lot of guts and character in the game.

It was the first time in Lilyfontein history that the 1st XV played against a bigger school’s 1st XV. The boys carried the Lilyfontein name high and really made the school proud. Well done to all the boys that played in that game.

This group is preparing for the great Amatola Hike. We started our journey from Lilyfontein School and made our way to the beach from where we headed straight to Gonubie – rain, sunshine and wind didn’t dent our spirits.

Band Day

Band Day was held on 1st March for all Grade 6-12 learners involved in either steel drum or marimba bands. We moved our instruments out under the Flamboyant trees in the front quad and then proceeded to make music! Interspersed with some hilarious team building games we managed to learn two new pieces that combined both steel pans and marimbas, Chariots of Fire and the Taco Bell Canon (apologies to Pachelbel). After several practising sessions, we played the new songs for the parents who gathered in the quad to hear the results of our day!

1st Team wins the East London Schools Cricket T20 Shield

On 26 February, the Lilyfontein 1st team played Stutterheim 1st team in the East London Schools Cricket T20 Shield final. Lilyfontein scored 100 for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Lubabalo Skade scored 40 runs. Stutterheim were all out for 48 runs. Matthew Promnitz took 3 wickets in 4 overs for 6 runs and Kevin Bickell bowled 2 overs, 4 wickets for 6 runs.

Athletics

The following athletes will be travelling to Cradock to participate in the Eastern Cape Athletics Championships. Lutho Magopeni (Long Jump and 200m Boys U/17), Siseko Mooi (100m and 200m BU/15), Siyasanga Somlotha (*00m B/15), Sihle Kelenjani (400m B/14), Justin Chan (3000m Bu/14) and Josie van Dyk (100m Hurdles, GU/19).

8 learners from Cambridge will be going to Pietermaritzburg from 29 March to 4 April to represent Border at the Inter-provincial U/19 Bowls Championships. Eddie Schemel and Jason Marriott have already experienced a tournament of this nature when they won silver in their section in the Costal Tournament in Bonnievale in September last year.

Our Outdoor Club recently went on a trip to Hogsback. Here they are pictured at one of the waterfalls. They also paid a visit to the NSRI and were taken out on one of the rescue craft.

Batting Properties Publis Speaking Competition Esethu Zibi participated in the Batting Properties Publis Speaking Competition on 8 March and was chosen as one of the top 7 speakers. She will go through to the final round, to be held on Saturday, 15 March.

The one fours team will consist of Schemel, Marriott, Chad Dawson and Brandon Sansom. The other team will be Sisipho Rebe, Mbalentle Gxekwa, Zimi Jukwa and Brandon de Ridder.

They will be accompanied by coach, Mr Richard Vlotman, and Mr Neville Hort, the development manager of Border Bowls.

We are also extremely proud of Nico van Zyl who came 7th overall in the junior section and first in the 15-17 year old age group at the Sunshine Coast Triathlon.

He and Maduna Mqanto will be representing Border at the Biathlon championships in Potchefstroom in April.

Beaconhurst High School Our Budding Athletes One of these learners, Tyler-Jesse Glover has done exceptionally well.

Tyler-Jesse started off by competing in the interschool’s meeting on the 5th of February. He competed in the boys u/12 Javelin and Shot Put events.

He threw an amazing 18.42 meters with the javelin and came second in this event. He was able to receive first place for his shot put event with a distance of 8.31 meters. He then went on to the East London District meeting and managed to improve his results in both these events and threw an incredible 8.56 meters with the shot Put. This allowed him to qualify for the Mega District Athletics meeting.

Once again he made us proud and placed third with a distance of 8.10 meters. This allowed him to qualify for the Amathole team and he competed in the Provincial Athletics Meeting in Mthatha.

Rising Star

Denika Petzer (grade 11) has shown just how much you can accomplish if you put your mind to something. Denika competed in both the Penny Pinchers and PWC 10 km races and placed first and second respectively. She also

completed in the Iron Girl Race where she placed 59th overall out of the 1100 runners and 7th in her age group. On the 19th of January she competed in the Stirling High School Biathle and had to endure a grueling 1600m run, followed by a 200m swim and then end it off with a 1600m run again in 18 minutes 36 seconds. Furthermore, she competed in the Siyakule Open water swim, which is a 750 meters swim at The Orient Beach and grabbed the title of the first woman home with a time of 12 minutes, 18 seconds. Denika has now also been selected to take part in the SA Champs Team for Triathlon and Duathlon.

Star/Guppie Gala

Top Swimmers at Beaconhurst School

Kline Mentoor participated in the Guppie Gala and managed to rope in a gold medal for his breaststroke. Well done to both these learners on the exceptional achievements.

Tayla Botha is a gem in the pool and came first in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. She also participated in the under 12 breaststroke and came 5th overall.

Two of our learners have, once again, shown what they are made of. Kyle Terwin competed in the Star Gala and received two silver medals in each of his events.

Three of our learners have done exceptionally well in the Top 8 swimming gala, which took place at the Joan Harrison last week Wednesday. Christo van Loggenberg participated in four events in his age group. He came first in the under 10 boys for freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. He also received a third place for breaststroke.

Matthew Greener managed to come sixth in the under 11 boys for the breaststroke event. Well done to all our swimmers. We are proud of all you.

Hudson Park High School

Our Mission Statement says that Hudson Park is a friendly family school where children are educated in a warm environment based on Christian values. The pupils of Hudson Park, the teachers and the Principal, Mr Roy Hewett, all strive to uphold the mission statement on the basis of our four pillar system that consists of Academic, Cultural, Pastoral and Physical spheres.

To adopt the four pillars and then to implement a balance always takes a while for the new grade eights to find their feet but then the real joy of participation becomes a way of life here at Hudson.

One of the teachers quoted this about Hudson – “Where the lights never go out.” You need to be part of this to experience the fact that the lights never do go out at Hudson.

Academic

The combined results of these learners in the National Life Sciences Reza Peterson and Natasha Marr came Olympiad for Grade 11 placed Hudson Park High School third nationally, joint third in the country in the National the only Eastern Cape High School to be in the top three.

Life Sciences Olympiad and have been shortlisted for the South African Biology Olympiad team to go to Indonesia in July, the only learners from the Eastern Cape to be chosen for the team.

Pastoral

About two weeks ago, our pupils were part of an annual Shavathon to raise money for cancer and the event, which is always fun to watch, raised a couple of thousand rand that will help where needed in East London. The pupils had their hair sprayed in different colours and had to pay for the privilege, but as seen by the big smiles, it was all worth it.

Physical

Hudson Park has achieved a first in East London by producing two SA Schools Cricket Players in 2013. What makes this a first is that the two players consist of a girl, Githe Koopman SA U19 Girls, and a boy, Ngazibini Sigwili, who played SA U/19 in 2013 against England U19 and who was part of the U19 SA squad that has beaten the Pakistan U19 team to win the World U19 Cup 2014.

Latest News Golf

Hudson Park participated in the annual Mitchum Scott Tournament held at West Bank Golf Course over the weekend. Hudson Park golfers excelled in winning all three sections with Coutney Wicks winning the U/19 section and Demi Flanagan finishing 3rd, Byron Toogood the U/17 section and Tristan Naude the U/15 section.

Rugby

At the Border Schools’ Day the 1st XV lost 8-14 to Dale College. At the Grens Festival on the Friday HP U/14A beat Stirling 24-21; U/15B lost Selborne U/15B 0-15 and U/16A beat King Edward High (Matatiele) 36-0 On Saturday the U/16A lost Fraemsby 1518; the U/15A lost to Fraemsby 0-17 and the U/14A’s beat Port Rex 63-0.

Hockey

At the Border Schools’ hockey trials the Hudson 1st girls team drew KHS 0-0, beat Clarendon 2-0, drew KHS 0-0; U/16A girls drew KHS 0-0, drew GHS 0-0 lost Clarendon 0-1; U/14A drew Clarendon 0-0, beat KHS 3-0 and beat Alphendale 1-0. The 1st boys lost against Selborne 0-1, lost Queens 1-2 and lost Dale 0-1; U/16A boys beat Selborne 2-0, drew Dale 1-1 and lost Queens 1-4; U/14A boys beat Dale 1-0 and lost Queens 0-2.

Hudson Park athletes achieved 9 medals at the Eastern Cape Meeting in Cradock.

Siba Mbinda won gold in U/19 110m hurdles.

Sange Mtukushe won silver in U/19 100m and bronze in 200m.

Pumi Kwinana won silver in the U/17 long jump.

Abongile Cewu bronze in U/19 long jump and bronze in U/19 triple jump.

Anesto Faltein bronze in U/14 boys 400m.

Anita Giba bronze in girls U/14 shotput.

Nicole de Asenceo bronze in girls U/15 high jump.

Keanon Mandean was 4th in boys U/17 110m hurdles.

Hudson Park High School has chosen Godspell as its musical production this year. Directed by multi-award-winning director, Pierre Perold, Godspell was written by Stephen Schwartz and is based on a novel by John-Michael Tebelak.

The musical is composed of a series of parables, mostly based on the Gospel of Matthew. The parables are interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns. The passion of Christ features briefly near the end of the performance. The show opened on Broadway in 1971, and was initially met with some reserve because of the musical’s interpretation and portrayal of Christ. Godspell has enjoyed many successful runs and revivals. In fact, if anything, Godspell is more relevant now than when it was first performed. It reiterates morals, beliefs and faith, which are severely lacking in our modern society. Mr Perold has breathed new life into the musical and, along with a talented cast of 15 pupils, promises to entertain and to leave a message that will stay with one long after the actors have taken their final bow and the houselights have come on. The choreography is by Mrs Natalie Oberem and the musical direction by Miss Rosanne Lesch.

The dates for Godspell is 11, 12, 14 – 17 April 2014 and the Matinee on 16 April 2014.

At the Grens Festival, the U/19 girls beat GHS 16-9; the U/16A’s beat Stirling 143, Cambridge 11-7, Stutterheim 26-3, De Vos Malan 17-6, Port Rex 11-7 and lost to Greenpoint 10-13; the U/14A’s beat Stirling 19-9, Grens 16-7, George Randell 20-3, Greenpoint 18-4 and De Vos Malan 13-11.
