AWSUMCelebrity Interview

Pieter-Steph du Toit

The big 24-year-old lock Pieter-Steph du Toit won the coveted South African Rugby Player of the Year award last year, following a brilliant and consistent performance in the green and gold in a difficult season for Springbok rugby. In the words of Alan Solomons: “Du Toit is a world-class player and a phenomenal athlete. South African rugby is extremely blessed with fantastic young locks from which to select, such as Du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert. Du Toit is an enormous man, yet is very athletic and well-coordinated. Moreover, he scrums superbly, is a terrific lineout forward and is an intelligent footballer. In my book, Du Toit is the complete rugby player.” Q: How did it feel to be announced SA’s Rugby Player of the Year? What did the award mean to you? A: I was honoured to receive this award, especially because it was an award voted for by the public. It is the biggest privilege one can hope for to receive the backing of the people of South Africa. The award means to me that what I am doing is worth the hard work and body blows. Q: What motivates you to give your best, game after game after game? A: I try to stay focused on my goal, I’m willing to give my best because I want to be the best. Q: What was the highlight of your career this far? A: I’ve had a lot of highlights in my career – being SA Rugby Player of the Year is definitely one, as well as being part of the World Cup 2015 team.

Q: You are the grandson of legendary powerhouse prop Piet ‘Spiere’ du Toit, who represented South Africa as a tighthead prop between 1958 to 1961 and played in 14 tests, including in the series against the All Blacks in 1960, which the Boks won. What does this legacy mean to you? A: As a young boy I used to dream about representing South Africa in a Springbok jersey. The fact that my grandfather was a Springbok probably gave me a stronger belief that my dreams were possible, but it also added extra pressure and expectations. So the legacy is one that fills me with much gratitude but also relief. More than anything else, it reminds me of the privilege to represent my country and the responsibility to be a genuine role model and principled individual that will earn respect of all people for the person I am and the values I represent. Q: What was your first Rugby World Cup experience like, moving from the crushing defeat by Japan to the semi-finals against New Zealand? A: The defeat against Japan was a huge disappointment. On the day Japan was very good and deserved the win. We had to decide on whether we would allow the defeat to derail our campaign or use it as fuel to drive the campaign and turn things around. We succeeded in doing the latter. The loss against the All Blacks was still unacceptable, but we put up a competitive and respectable performance on the day and the players on the field that day all know that the result could have gone either way. Both games were disappointing in the end, because Springboks go to a World Cup to win it. Anything short of doing that is a failed mission.

AWSUM NEWS MARCH 2017

Q: Coach Heyneke Meyer said at the time that changing your position from lock to flank after the defeat against Japan in the World Cup had a ‘match-winning effect’. Which is your preferred position, and why? A: I prefer to play at lock. From a young age I excelled in athletics and I do believe it gave me an advantage in playing rugby in giving me extra agility, pace and stamina. My desire always was and still remain to be a lock forward with the work rate of a loose forward, but with the genuine physical presence and strength of a tight five member. I want to finish the game one day knowing that I have given my absolute best. Part of achieving that will be to look back and say that I have made the best possible contribution to the teams I represented by being a lock forward who could do things not expected of locks. Q: Tell us a bit about your family and upbringing. A: I am part of a family of six. I have three younger brothers. Our parents raised us in a home where we received unconditional love, support and encouragement and I can only thank God for that. I grew up on a farm in the Boland and has been blessed to spend most of my days outdoors close to nature. We are a very close family and my family is my foundation. Q: You matriculated at HS Swartland. What were the pros and cons of not being at one of the big rugby schools like Paarl Gim or Paul Roos? A: What do you mean we are not a big rugby school? We also produced a French International in Pieter de Villiers, something that no other famous school you mention has done! On a serious note, Hoërskool Swartland is an incredible school and I would not want anything different if I could have my school career over. I cannot think about cons other than the fact that we did not have the rugby depth of bigger schools, with more boys who could better absorb injuries through a season. There are many pros, but the one that stands out is the fact that I learned to fight hard for what I want in rugby and that it takes hard work to get to the top. You cannot rely on the fame and achievements of those who came before you to make a success – you need to do it yourself and on merit only. Q: What are your future career dreams? What is the one thing you would really like to achieve? A: I would like to become a very successful rugby player, one that will be remembered for how he played the game that I love and hopefully a successful businessman in the future.

Q: You were Man of the Match in the Stormers’ first Super Rugby match this season. How do you think the Stormers will fare this year? A: It is still early days and we need to take it one game at a time. I do believe the Stormers have the motivation, the camaraderie and the game plan to make it to the play-offs and once we are there, our chances are as good as any of the other teams to go all the way and win Super Rugby.

Matric Farewell 2017 W h a t t o d o o n t h e d a y o f yo ur Ma t r i c Fa re wel l ph o to s h o o t Have you given a thought about the photographs of the day yet? Here are some tips for the actual day of the photo shoot. 1. A good night’s sleep. It is important that you get a good night’s sleep the night before your photo shoot to make sure you are refreshed on the day. 2. Plan your day. Plan your day beforehand to ensure you have enough time to get ready before your photo shoot. 3. Small things do matter. Check all the small things, such as facial hair, nails, lips, and so on. Your hands are definitely going to feature somewhere in the photo shoot, so make sure your nails are perfect. 4. Accessories. Make sure that you have all your accessories ready the day before. Missing something on the day will just add to stress, which you don’t need, as it is a day to enjoy. Guys, check that your shoes are clean, as dusty or dirty shoes don’t make for interesting photographs.

5. Final check. Just before you leave for the photo shoot or before the photographer arrives, double check in the mirror or ask a family member or friend to check that everything is in place and that your make-up is looking great. 6. Gather ideas. It is a great idea to look on the internet or in magazines on poses for photographs. This could give you an idea of what you would like from your photo shoot on the day.
