This is the last issue of 2015, in which AWSUM will be boasting with your school news and achievements for the year … The next issue will be filled with lots of festive treats and holiday content, just in time for you to get into Christmas mode.

This year has certainly been busy, and for some perhaps more challenging than for others. But if you’re reading this, you’ve made it!

Dit het begin om 16:00 begin en aangehou tot die laaste leerders besluit het om te vertrek. In die vierkant is daar ‘n klompie stoele en ‘n paar tafels uitgepak. Langs die saaldeure was die koeldranke en die braaigeriewe. ‘n Kaartjie het R25 gekos. Hiervoor het jy ‘n sappige worsrolletjie en ‘n koue koeldrank ontvang.

Aanvanklik het almal rondgestaan en lekker gesels. Nadat die braaiers hulle werkie verrighet, kon dié wat ‘n kaartjie gekoop het aan hulle worsrolletjies smul. Dansmusiek wat die voete laat jeuk het, het leerders aangemoedig om met hul nuutste danspassies te spog.

HOËRSKOOL STRAND

Jolige musiek, worsrolletjies, koue koeldrank, 2 braaiers en aangename mense dit is die resep vir ‘n suksesvolle skoolbraai. Die skoolbraai is ‘n nuwe tradisie wat deur die VRL van 2016 ingestel is. Die doel van die braai was om ‘n geleentheid te skep vir leerders om mekaar beter te leer ken in ‘n gesellige atmosfeer. Die leerderraad wil graag ‘n eenheid onder die leerders skep sodat skooltrots uitgebou kan word.

Volgens die VRL is ‘n gelukkige leerder ‘n betrokke leerder. Sodra jy betrokke raak by die skool, sal jy besef dat daar waaheid in hulle woorde lê. Die braai is op Vrydag 23 Oktober in die meisiesvierkant gehou.

I love the warm, sweet, almost peppery aroma of caraway seeds, with their hint of aniseed.

And you can taste the sunshine in the sultanas…

INGREDIENTS: For the dressing: • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 10 ml orange zest

• 5 ml ginger, freshly grated • 1 red chilli, sliced • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice • 2 tbls Wellington’s red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup sesame oil • 1 tbls honey • 2 tbls Wellington’s Peach Chutney • Salt to taste Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend.

The slaw: • 3 large green apples, skin on, sliced • 250 g green cabbage, finely shredded

• 250 g red cabbage, finely shredded • 1cup walnuts, toasted • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, toasted • 1/2 cup sultanas • 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup mint, chopped • 2.5 ml caraway seeds, toasted and crushed (optional) METHOD: Toss all the ingredients together and mix well with the orange dressing just before serving.

MEDICLINIC VERGELEGEN MAKES POSITIVE HEADWAY WITH MULTI-MILLION RAND PROJECT The construction of a new triple storey facility which Mediclinic Vergelegen embarked on earlier this year is well on schedule and expected to be completed in the last quarter of next year. This innovative facility will house a world-class cardiac unit with a state of the art hybrid theatre, larger emergency centre, radiology department, doctor consulting rooms, neonatal critical care unit and more patient and parent friendly paediatric and obstetric (maternity) units.

The recently designed family-and-child centered obstetric, paediatric and neonatal critical care units will all be accommodated on the ground floor and in close proximity to each other. These units will boast larger rooms as well as more dedicated private rooms which will contribute immensely to patients and their parents enjoying a positive hospital experience. The enhanced design of the obstetric unit is better able to accommodate the practice of bodily contact between mother and baby, breastfeeding and expressing, as well as mom and baby rooming in. Mother’s will continue to enjoy the choice to exercise their preferred method of feeding their babies like breast feeding, cup feeding or bottle feeding.

Based on the first floor, the innovative cardiac unit will boast a state of the art hybrid theatre, catheterisation laboratory, cardiac theatre, cardiology and cardiothoracic critical care units and general cardiology unit. The latest hybrid theatre, situated in the cardiac theatre complex, will combine the advantages of a catherisation laboratory and cardiac theatre by accommodating both invasive and non-invasive medical procedures. Mediclinic Vergelegen’s leading specialists will now be better equipped to treat the Helderberg community in a top class facility with state of the art equipment at their disposal.

This three-storey building is just the first phase of an estimated R372 million investment by Mediclinic Southern Africa in the upgrade and expansion of Mediclinic Vergelegen over the next 3 years. The second phase entails the upgrade of the current reception

and restaurant area, orthopaedic, surgical and general critical care units. An updated pharmacy and medical unit is also planned.

Once completed, the hospital will increase its acute-care capacity by approximately 40 beds. Provision to further expand the hospital’s bed capacity is also being made should it become a necessity in future. The additional doctor suites to be added as part of the building project will ensure that even more top class specialists are available to the community in one convenient location.

The project also makes provision for ample additional parking bays which are currently under significant pressure.

In order to become increasingly environmentally friendly as an ISO14001 accredited hospital, we have implemented Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) systems in place of air-conditioning and heat pumps to generate hot water instead of geysers, as well as solar water heating to ensure energy saving. All of the above initiatives have been installed in the design of the new units. Water recovery from the hospital’s autoclaves to be used for irrigation purposes is also being planned for the future.

During the final phase of the building project an entire section of the hospital where the Cardiac unit, Obstetric and Paediatric units are currently based will be demolished. These are the areas which were most affected by the floods in 2013 and will make way for a brand new two-storey building, which will be better positioned to deal with any possible future flooding.

The community of the Helderberg area can look forward to receiving world class maternity, neonatal and paediatric care in the new more spacious and modern facilities currently under construction. In die 4 x 100m Aflos Dogters 0/13, verbeter hulle Laerskool Gimnasium se rekord van 56,3 na 55, 7sek. In die 4 x medley Aflos (400m; 200m; 150m; 150m) verbeter hulle weereens die bestaande rekord van 2:05,80 na 2:03,2 sek.

Laerskool Stellenbosch se eerste seuns tennispan het vir die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar die Jocelyn Marais toernooi in Graaff Reinet gewen.

GIMNASTIEK

Marelie Botha, talentvolle gimnas van Laerskool Lochnerhof, het op 9 Oktober 2015 aan die SA gimnastiekkampioenskappe in Pretoria deelgeneem. Sy was tweede in brug en vierde in vloer uit 77 gimnaste. Sy het ook aan die ‘double mini” kampioenskappe in trampolien deelgeneem op 7 Oktober 2015 waar sy brons verower het. Wel gedaan.

Die volgende atlete van Laerskool Lochnerhof het baie goed presteer in die Top 12 Atletiekbyeenkoms op 24 Oktober 2015.

Mia du Plessis van Laerskool Lochnerhof het aan die Suid-Afrikaanse gimnastiekkampioenskappe deelgeneem in die o/11 ouderdomsgroep (vlak 4 afdeling). Sy het die algehele derde plek behaal en ‘n brons medalje verwerf. Sy het ook ‘n goue medalje vir die trapbrug verwerf.

Op 4 November, ‘n pragtige windstil aand in die Strand, het die jaarlikse Louwtjie Beach Run plaasgevind. Oud en jonk het die geleentheid gebruik om tyd saam te spandeer en langs die see te stap.

RADIKALE REDENAARS

SANTA SHOEBOX PROJECT

Alessia Ledere, Grade 10, participated in the national round of the Radikale Redenaars public speaking competition on the 31 October in Pretoria. As it was a national competition, there were representatives from each province. The competition caters for all kinds of speaking talents in different categories in each age group. Alessia participated in the English Home Language persuasive speech category.

She presented a speech entitled, “Teenagers are our country’s most valuable resource”. Alessia’s speech was clearly convincing – she placed second.

Rhenishers took the Santa Shoebox Project to heart this year. The 720 learners managed to assembly 868 gift boxes for donation to the Project. The girls formed a human chain to convey the beautifully wrapped gifts to the Santa Shoebox transport vehicles. Their generosity will be rewarded with the joy each box will bring to a child this Christmas.

CRICKET CREASE MATHS: 53 X 4’S + 17 X 6’S = 263 + 212* = 475 Last week two of Paul Roos Gymnasium’s U/14 cricketers produced a master class of tenacity and scored a record second-wicket partnership for their team.

Facing the Somerset College bowlers who had removed one of the opening batsmen cheaply, PRG’s Francois Joubert strode to the wicket to join Ruan Terblanche.

The two attacking batsmen immediately started to score quickly and were soon dominating the bowl¬ers.

Despite a valiant effort from the Somerset bowlers, they simply had no answer to the stroke play of Joubert and Terblanche, who were firing at 142 and 180 strike rates respectively.

Both batsmen got to triple figures – but that was only the start of the run fest as they continued to strike the ball to all corners of the field. Joubert was particularly aggressive as he thumped 11 sixes and 32 fours in his mammoth 263-not-out innings in a breathtaking display of attacking cricket.

Ruan Terblanche, who had opened the innings, finished with 212 runs, not out, which constituted a record 486run partnership for the second wicket in this 50-over match.

LORD OF THE RINK

Paul Roos can once again lay claim to a sportsman at national level. JP Brits (Grade 11) has been chosen for the South African U/18 and U/20 Ice Hockey teams – he is leaving on the 12th of January next year for an International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) world championship tour to Mexico for the U/20 SA team. He will also play for the U/18 SA team in a championship held in March.

Ons het sopas verneem dat Dirt for Oval SA (D4OSA) gaan 1ste week in Desember ‘n prysuitdeling by Emperiors Palace hou vir alle SA drywers. Hier ontvang alle motorsport drywers hul toekennings van go-carts tot rally. Hy is ook die jongste drywer om ooit SA1 nommer te kry ‘n National in die Hotrod klas. Dit is omtrent ‘n prestasie.

U.17 SOCCER TEAM OF HHH

Bernd Steinhage, founder of Young Bafana Soccer, is the coach at Hottentots-Holland High School. The u.17 Soccer team at HHH ended second in the league and was promoted to a higher league for the next season. The HHH team played 14 matches and only lost one.
