A COLD OR FLU? HERE’S WHAT TO DO
As the nights get colder, the duvets and heaters aren’t the only things being hauled out, as people across the country reach for the tissues to soothe those inevitable winter sniffles. IS IT A COLD SNIFFLE OR A FLU SNIFFLE? AND WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? TELLING THE DIFFERENCE
The perennial confusion between the common cold and influenza is due to the fact that the symptoms are so similar: runny nose, sore throat, fever, and body aches. For the record, colds are caused by viruses, and there are often at least 200 of them circulating during cold and flu season. By contrast, there’s usually only one influenza virus in circulation every year, according to health experts. The best indications that you’re dealing with a cold and not the flu are severity and duration: Colds typically last between three and seven days and generally aren’t very serious.
TREATING COLDS AND FLU
three days. While the evidence isn’t strong, he says it can’t hurt to have a stash of zinc lozenges handy, just to give it a try. If you feel like you have a whopper of a cold, however, and are experiencing serious and longerlasting symptoms than normal, you’re probably dealing with the flu. A case of the flu can last up to 12 days. And although antibiotics are useless against a cold, they can be effective in treating the flu virus, says Kwok. But they’re only really effective if taken within 48 hours of the appearance of your first symptoms, and are usually prescribed for high-risk cases. That leaves the countless over-the-counter drugs to combat colds and flu. But even the most potent varieties are likely to offer little more than temporary relief, says dr. Larry Fields, a GP. “The over-the-counter medications act to control symptoms so you may feel better, but the course of the
illness won’t be shortened.” IS THE FLU SERIOUS?
If the treatment for colds and the flu is typically the same, why is it important to know whether you’ve got one or the other? Because the flu has much greater potential to lead to pneumonia in certain high-risk people, says Kwok. Those people include the elderly, those with chronic conditions (such as diabetes, asthma and chronic bronchitis), and those with autoimmune deficiencies. Pneumonia should be suspected if flu symptoms suddenly worsen, if a fever suddenly spikes higher, or if someone experiences shortness of breath. A healthcare provider should be called immediately if such symptoms develop. “It’s very rare for someone to die from a cold, but the flu and complications from the flu are estimated to cause about 20 000 deaths per year in the United States. So that’s why there’s more concern about the flu,” says Kwok.

DIY KEY FRAME
I love it when practical things are also pretty. This month, why not make one of these DIY key frames, as it happens to fit this description very well. THINGS YOU WILL NEED: • A frame you like. It can be any size, but I recommend one with a gap in the centre slightly larger than your keys. • A screwdriver with appropriate size screw. (The box of screw hooks will tell you what size to use.) • Screw hooks.
WHAT TO DO: Take the frame and plan out where you’d like the hooks to be placed. I decided to use four hooks on my frame. Once you’re decided, drill the correctly-sized holes into the frame. After you’ve drilled the holes, screw in each hook. You are now ready to mount the frame on the wall and hang your keys!

HOCKEY GIRLS
The Hendrik Louw U13A hockey girls, led by captain Blayne Samuels and vice captain Eljah De Wet, competed at the annual ‘Park Sewes’ sport tournament this year and walked away with the winner’s trophy. The competition was tough and after having played 7 fantastic hockey matches in their pool they ended first, pulling through to the final where they faced up against Panorama. The final
match proved to be intense where both teams showed tremendous fight and talent. At full time the game stood at a 0-0 draw which led both teams to penalty shoot outs. Despite a very tense and exciting situation, Hendrik Louw held their own and walked away with the final win! We would like to credit and say congratulations to Panorama who were very worthy opponents.
