Spring is officially here, and what could be more suited then celebrating with an entire month dedicated to the favorite South-African pass time – having a BRAAI! Whether you’re doing it on your stoep in Strandfontein, or on your patio in Pretoria. Or having a braai at your mother’s-brother’s-uncle’s house in Kraaifontein – there’s nothing better than the smell of a chop sizzling over the coals. And as an extra bonus … WE GET THE DAY OFF!!! Our government set this day aside for all South Africans to celebrate our rich heritage. After browsing on the Internet, I stumbled onto braai.com, whose mission is to position National Braai Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration on National Heritage Day.

They’ve also shared a list of fun braai words, almost like a braaidictionary to help you sound cool around the coals: 1. Aai: a braai in the summer aka – a braai without the brrrr! 2. Abbraaiviation: a very short braai. 3. Abraaimowitz: a Jewish braai. 4. Asskebab: If somebody makes an ass of himself/herself at a braai you call them an Asskebab. 5. Aweh: various meanings and can be widely used to express something positive e.g. hello, yes, nice, good.

6. Baas: Afrikaans for boss, the guy holding the braai tongs. 7. Bak: a dish, made from aluminum or stainless steel, used for storing the meat in before and after it is braaied. Some braaiers use a glass bak, but there is a safety concern in this. When you eat straight off of the braai, then a bak is unnecessary. 8. Barbie: Australian slang for barbeque. What you learn to call a braai when you immigrate there. 9. Black wattle: Alien vegetation that uses a lot of water when alive. Good for the environment to chop it down and braai with it. Versatile braai wood, burns easily when dry, and makes decent coals. 10. Blitz: Although this is a brandname, it is used as a universal term in South Africa for fire lighters of any kind or brand. A frequently asked question at many a braai: “where is the blitz?” 11. Blitzbraai: When you light the blitz intending to braai but instead just end up getting blitzed sonder a braai. 12. BMW: Braai Met Wiele - Braai met wiele wat hier daar of enige plek gesleep kan word om te braai. 13. Boerie: abbreviation for

boereworsroll. 14. Bokdopentjop (bok-dop-en-tjop) – ‘bring and braai’ – you may bring your bok (babe), your dop (drinks) and tjop (meat of choice). 15. Bosberaad: a conference. You and your friends coming together to discuss your strategy for National Braai Day. 16. Braai hard: 90′s action movie about a really rough guy who braais a lot. 17. Braai hijacker: the guy that you don’t really want to invite to your braai, but have too. Cause he is someone’s boyfriend. He claims to be a chef and manages to hi-jack the braai when the real braaier goois a dop. 18. Braai tongs: Weapon of choice for the braai master. 19. Braaiathon: a very long braai 20. Braaidsmaid: Female performing supporting role during a braai. E.g. making salad, marinating meat, making braaibroodjies. For more braaicabulary visit http://braai. com/braai-words/

The future of makeup ... in 3D! 3D printing is all the rage these days, but for now, it’s mostly centered around little plastic doo-dads. The MINK, is a bit different. This little printer lets users choose any color on the web, or in the real world, and using simple already-existing software, print that color into a blush, eye shadow, lip gloss or any other type of makeup.

to certain brands, but rather focused on convenience. With Mink, users can satisfy the desire for instant gratification while still having access to any color in the world at an affordable price.

See, most makeup comes from the same basic substrates, from high-end labels like Chanel all the way down to the cheap stuff available at drug stores. Founder Grace Choi sources the same substrate for the Mink so that users can turn any image into any kind of makeup.

Simply choose a color on a website, Pinterest board, or snap one with your phone in the real world, and use any color picker to locate the hex code of the color. Once you have the code, you can put it into any other program like Photoshop or Paint and simply press print.

The idea here is that consumers are increasingly focused on instant gratification and DIY solutions. Choi also noticed that makeup consumers aren’t always loyal

The company is targeting the younger, 13-21 demographic who are less ingrained in their habits with certain brands and retailers. Currently, the Mink is still a prototype, which is set to retail at $300 (approx. R3000) and although the prices of the ink and raw materials aren’t available yet, we totally think Grace Choi is on to something big. What would you want to print first? Your own eyeshadow? Or what about a blusher? The options are endless.

Is your makeup bag making you sick? As women, we LOVE beauty products, but do we know everything there is to know about what we so religiously pour and smear all over our faces? Here are your need-to-knows.

MASCARA In the early days the ingredients in this product used to be quite scary. Things like turpentine, kohl which contained lead and aniline, an ingredient found in hair dye, used to cause blindness. But don’t fret ladies, nowadays there are regulations which strictly limit the use of certain ingredients to only those which are safe to apply to the eyes. Still, it doesn’t hurt to stay aware of ingredients like thimerosal which can cause eyelid rashes and conjunctivitis, to keep those eyes healthy and bright. Toss after: 3-6 months FOUNDATION The miracle we use every day to cover all our imperfections and leave our skin looking “naturally” fabulous, what would we do without it, right? Unfortunately a nasty truth is that most foundations, both liquid and powder, contain petrochemicals that are used as fillers. They also contain mineral oil that can build up on the skin, oil tends to clog your pores and can leave you with those unwanted pimples. If you’re a fan of using mineral powder foundations, some of those brands contain chemicals like bismuth oxychloride which can cause bad skin irritations. So know your skin type and what brands you’re using. Toss after: Jar or cream powder undation-1 to 3 years liquid foundation-1 year LIPSTICK One word, lanolin. It’s one of the main ingredients in lipstick and gives it its greasy texture. This is the oily substance which mammals secrete to shed water from their coats. Ok, so now that you have that lovely picture in your mind, it’s not the kind of thing you’d want near those luscious lips of yours but it seems more of an ugly fact then it is harmful to your

health. However, some of the more harmful ingredients said to be in some lipsticks are lead and petrochemicals such as talc and parabens. Paying attention to these chemicals just keeps you in the loop and allows you more choice in what you’re wanting to put on your lips. Toss after: 1 year LIQUID LINER The thing we love to use to make those amazing cat eyes, yes, you know what I’m talking about. But guess what, chemicals like mercury are found in eyeliners and are readily absorbed into the skin. It can cause allergic reactions among other things. Other ingredients also found in this product are aluminium powders and BHA which are both quite commonly used in eyeliners and can be harmful to your system. Whenever it comes to your delicate eyes, it’s always best to be extra cautious with the products you use. Toss after: 3 to 4 months SKINCARE PRODUCTS These help our skin to stay moisturised and beautiful and keep those wrinkles to a bare minimum for as long as possible, and we’re all big fans of that! Unfortunately, this doesn’t come without some cons. A lot of products contain parabens which are used to lengthen its shelf life but are said to have some hormone disrupting effects. Another one used is synthetic polymers. These are derived from petroleum and give skin care products its jelly-like texture. Following the expiry date would definitely be a help no matter how difficult it might be to toss a half used jar and anyway, products past their expiry date lose their gooey effectiveness which won’t benefit your skin. Toss after: Sealed pack with pump-1 year, Jar-6 to 10 months

House & Home SEPTEMBER 2014 3 By: Germarie Bruwer and Margaux Tait from Homeology.co.za

Sometimes life throws you some old tiles and then you have two options: live with it, or paint and stamp it! Save yourself a heap of cash by opting for this very clever stamp that can be used in any number of ways. My kitchen had been in desperate need of a tiled splash-back because unlike most old homes, I wasn’t blessed with horrid old kitchen tiles.

5. Prime the tiles with a standard tile primer — there are many brands on the market — and then let it cure for 24 hours.

1.Cut 16 mm chip board to the size you want your panel to be, minus 2.5 mm on all 4 sides. This will ensure that the tiles hang over the wood a little bit to create a nice shadow line.

7. After the pattern had dried for a couple of hours, you’ll need to seal it with a craft sealer like Harlequin Paint’s Decorator’s Varnish. It’s a clear coat that will ensure that you can wipe down the tiles when they get wet or dirty.

3. The stamp size is 150 mm x150mm so I used some very inexpensive white tiles to the same size. Fix the tiles to the panel using a tile adhesive, leaving a 2 mm space between them. 4. Use grout to fill in the spaces and let it dry for a couple of hours.

GRILLED GRAPE FRUITS

At the very tail-end of winter the grape fruit is in full swing.

I started serving these zesty and yet slightly warming delicacies on cooler spring retreat mornings. There is something intrinsically cheerful about the smell of grapefruits that make them a welcome addition to a breakfast spread. Select ruby grapefruits for their vibrant colour and richer antioxidant content and use a grapefruit knife to cut into segments before grilling for easier eating. The sprinkle of brown sugar will melt into the grapefruit as it caramelizes, softening the bitterness and giving the surface a perfectly radiant glow. A joyous and juicy way to begin the day.

WHAT YOU NEED: • 3 grapefruits • 2 tbls brown sugar (approx) WHAT TO DO: • Set the oven to grill and place a rack in the middle shelf.

• Cut grapefruits evenly in half, slice 2-3mm off each base to allow grapefruits to rest flat without rolling.

• Grill for about 10-15 minutes until flecked and speckled. Serve plain or with yoghurt.

If using a grapefruit knife, carefully cut along the rim of the flesh before cutting into 4 or 8 segments. • Place grapefruits on a baking sheets, flesh side up,and sprinkle each half with approximately 1 tsp of brown sugar to taste.

Montagu Youth Arts Festival By: Rijk de Wet (Grade 11) Aidan Lewis, grade 11, must have left a lasting impression on the judges at this year’s Montagu Youth Arts Festival: his masterful display of musicality has earned him the trophy for the Best Soloist of the Festival. Aidan managed to obtain a staggering 90% (a Cum Laude) for his performance. To be deemed the Best Soloist, as Aidan has been this year, is therefore no small feat. Aidan takes music as a subject at Paul Roos, with singing as his main instrument. He has also recently

optained two more Cum Laudes with an amazing 90% and 94% at the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod.

Jesse Hip-Hop: King of the Hill!

Voice, instrument, action!

Jesse Hill in grade 9, one of the best hip-hop dancers in the country for his age category, seems to be setting the scene with his fresh moves. His crew, named Urban Concept, recently came first at the Western Cape SASAF hip-hop competition with a score of 8,4, and also proceeded to claim the top spot at the national competition with an impressive score of 8,6. Jesse says that he plans “to become an architect, but also a world-class dance choreographer.” He also aspires to become top-ranked in all the different styles. We wish him the best of luck!

Hoërskool Parel Vallei SEPTEMBER 2014 11 Parel Vallei Advanced Education Results

Boomplantdag

Experience has shown that gifted learners are not sufficiently challenged by the standard curriculum offered in state schools. Accordingly, for the past 15 years, Parel Vallei has offered advanced courses to our brightest learners and has been a registered exam centre for the Cambridge International Examinations. We are proud of the recent results our learners have achieved and would like to congratulate them on their success. These Parel Valleiers are achieving academic excellence! The following learners achieved 80% in the Cambridge International Exams in May/June 2014: Mathematics / Mechanics: • Andrew Harrison-Migochi • Melissa Swindon • Johan Smit • Danijela Savic • Sian Bester • Giovanni Matthews • Michael Steyn

Physics: Andrew Harrison-Migochi Literature in English: Rebecca Allsopp, Andrea Harrison
