AWSUM Celebrity Interview V You released the album ‘Sing vir Liefde’ earlier this year and signalled a new direction with this album. What is different about your music on this album? A I wrote the majority of songs on this album mysefl. I could write what I had on the heart. Every album is about your life and in which place in your life you are at that stage. V You are the sister of the equally well-known and popular Bobby van Jaarsveld and performed with him on stage as guitar player and on background vocals. You also did a duet with him on his first album. What made you decide to go solo? Do you still perform together these days?
K arlien van Jaarsveld
Double SAMA-winner, television star and actress Karlien van Jaarsveld had a meteoric rise in the Afrikaans entertainment industry. AWSUM News chatted to her about her career, her children, and her dreams for the future.
A It is a road that God chose, and not me. We do not often perform together, but when we do, we enjoy it.
V Tell us about your childhood and where you grew up and went to school. A I remember that as children my brother and I always made the family sit down to watch us perform shows. It must be there where the music bug bit me. We moved around quite a bit, so I was in a number of schools, with most of my growing-up years spent in Brits and Witbank. V Your rise in the music industry was fast and successful. In 2011 you won the Best Newcomer award in the Tempo Awards. You were also awarded two SAMAs for Best Pop Album (Afrikaans) in 2014 (‘Uitklophou’) and 2016 (‘My Hartjie’). Tell us a bit more about these two albums and their success stories. A In my wildest dreams I would never have expected this. I always had a really good support team. What also helped a lot, is that people believed in me. V Your interests and talents are wide and varied. You have acted in films, performed on stage, and even won ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Season 8. Which of these non-music things do you enjoy the most? A I like being in film. You can sometimes play a character that is completely the opposite of yourself. I like a challenge. But one of the roles I enjoy the most these days, is to be a wife to my husband and a mother to my children. V You are the mom of two twin boys, Daniël and Eliah, with another little one on the way. How did motherhood change your life? What is the best thing about being a mom? How do you balance your career, marriage and motherhood? A It is one of the most amazing gifts that we as people can receive. Just to be with them every day and to see how they develop, is wonderful (but it happens too fast!). I am at home during the week and can spend time with them after school and during the evenings. They also regularly go on tour with me. Sometimes it feels as if I learn more from them than they from me.
A To spend time with my children and my husband.
V What is your advice for a first date?
V What was the highlight of your career so far? Why?
A Just be yourself.
A The opportunity to do ‘In jou skoene’, because it dealt with the things that really matter in life.
V Favourite pastime (when you get time)?
V What advice about love and life do you have for our high school learners? A Remember to just be yourself – it can sometimes feel awkward to be yourself and it could take years before you realise that to be yourself would always have been the best thing.

Despite the boys playing for separate teams in this tournament, both teams were successful. Tanaka was a part of the Johannesburg team, while JC was a part of the Southerns team. The Southerns team had a rough start in the beginning of the tournament, however, with great resilience and perseverance from the players, they won the tournament. ST PETER’S BOYS PREP SCHOOL (t) 011 705 3423 (e) reception@stpeters.co.za St Peter’s Boys Junior Prep reading and playing ball for Mandela Day On Tuesday, 25 July the Boys Junior Prep served their 67 Minutes for Mandela at Diepsloot Combined School. It was a morning of magic and friendship, as adults and children from St Peter’s read a story to the children at Diepsloot Combined School and then played a game with a tennis ball. Each child was able to take home a book and ball and the look on some of their faces when they realised they could keep these treasured items, was priceless. The generosity of our parent body amazed us once again as we calculated that we had collected approximately 700 packs of balls and books. This meant that not only did we share the morning with the 400 children in Grades 0, 1 and 2,
but we could also give a pack to the boys and girls in both Grades 3 and 4. Thank you to Belinda Gilbert whose idea this was and who moved heaven and earth to achieve her goal. She was ably assisted by Saskia McFerren and Phetsile Ramabulana – these three women are the backbone of our outreach programme. Thank you to the parents who gave of their time and money, especially those who got their companies involved. Thank you also goes to Trevlyn Bunting and our bus drivers, Daniel Selekisho and Tyson Banda, for their assistance with transport, as well as staff members and interns who joined us for the morning. One can only leave a morning such as this feeling positive about our country and the generosity of its people!

Mandela Day ‘Pop-up Shop’ With the recent celebration of Mandela Day on 18 July, St Peter’s Girls School’s Head of Pastoral Care, Mrs Cara Eggett, planned and organised a ‘Pop-up Shop’, with the aim of assisting the school community. Second-hand clothes were collected and brought to school by the pupils. These were sorted into categories by schoolgirls and displayed on hangers on the schools’ tennis courts on the day of the ‘sale’. Prior planning was done in collaboration with representatives of the various departments who would benefit from this
exercise, as to how the shop would operate. This was a valuable meeting where points of view and suggestions were made and decisions taken. Staff were invited to come and visit the ‘Pop-up Shop’, on the day, and were given the opportunity to select items of clothing from the various display areas – all containing different types of clothing. This was a delightful experience for those arranging, as well as for those benefiting, from the exercise. This was a successful and supportive initiative, which we hope will be repeated in the future.

ST PETER’S COLLEGE (t) 011 807 5315 (e) info@stpeterscollege.co.za Record for Advanced Programme (AP) Mathematics We are incredibly proud and humbled by the magnificence of our AP Mathematics students. We have made history as 73 students at St Peter’s College wrote the AP Mathematics July Examination. AP Mathematics has posed many challenges in the content this term, and many students displayed their resilience and continued with the subject due to their tremendous passion for learning.
There exists an energy and a ‘never-give-up’ attitude with our students that we have not seen in a while. Many schools take credit for the mathematical talent that comes with the students who enrol, but our AP Mathematics students who wrote the July Examination did so only because they discovered their purpose and ambition to do so. A big thank you to our 18 Grade 12 AP Mathematics
students for setting a great example and touching the future, inspiring the next generation of our AP Mathematics students to be resilient and headstrong. This is the highest ever number of AP Mathematics students registered to write the IEB Final Examination and, if they persevere and prepare adequately, there will be a high number of distinctions at the end of the year.
