Many of us have been celebrating Oktoberfest for as long as we can remember. Have you ever wondered where the tradition started? Here’s a list of fun facts to help you become an Oktoberfest aficionado. 1. Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance. 2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue. 3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII.

4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs. 5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest 6. Only six breweries that brew within the Munich city limits are allowed to participate in Oktoberfest:

Hofbräuhaus München, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu, Paulaner Bräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu and Augustiner Bräu. 7. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600. 8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. 10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling.

Unified Rainbow Brackies The children of Brackenfell Primary, are privileged to be in a school where children come from different cultures, religions and backrounds. We can truly say that the Brackies are unified in their diversity and we are proudly South African. With heritage day around the corner, we decided to create an event where the children could have the opportunity to come to school in their traditional clothing and thus, share stories and teach one another about their different cultures. A ceremony was organized where one of our pupils, Sune Louw, did a presentation on the meaning

of heritage day, what it entails and what it means for us as a nation. We had pupils who read some poems about our heritage and interviewed others who wore traditional clothing. Our girls’ choir sang two songs and we ended off by singing the national anthem. We all had the chills as the assembly of 800 children sang the anthem with pride. May you all have a blessed heritage day. In the words of Madiba: “When you speak to a person in a language he understands, you speak to his head. But when you speak to a person in his own language, you speak to his heart.”

Bellville HTS Teacher’s Forum Every year, Boston’s Teachers forum take teachers on an excursion to learn more about career opportunities and internships available at the Boston City Campus and Business Colleges. This year our hosts, Alvino and Susan, themed it World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 and went out of their way to make it a memorable and educating experience. Our visits include Cape Town Stadium, The One & Only Hotel Enterprise from the Kerzner Group, Rose Street and BoKaap Restaurant. The grand finale was certainly a drive with Alayne Reesburg (CEO WDC 2014) in her 7-series BMW hybrid at the end of the day. Thanks to Boston for an awesome day!

The A squad achieved a 91.6% success rate during the 2014 league season, losing only one league match. In conjunction with the B squad, who has also only lost a single match, the Spartans have an 86.6% success rate! The A squad scored 52 tries this season, giving away only 9 tries in 12 matches. Five times their opponents had to walk away from the field without scoring

a single point. The B squad won all their 2014 friendly matches, scoring five times as many tries as their rivals. At least 36 opponent scrums and 38 lineouts were taken as well by the Spartans. Taking league and friendly matches into consideration, the Spartans scored a total of 70 tries this season! This average of 3.5 tries per match proves that running rugby is alive and well is SA school rugby. Coaches J. Nel and C. Stander would like to thank the parents for all their support throughout the season! It is truly appreciated!

Ons vyfde suksesvolle interskole teen Hoërskool Brackenfell is verby. Wikus Herselman
