rsdag

• Uitstekend! Julle is voorwaar AWSUM!!!

• I have just had the pleasure of reading your AWSUM newspaper! It is great!

Adjusting to High School

Dr. Demartini sê die volgende oor boelies: “If you’ve got a bully in your life and he’s pushing you around, it’s partly because you’re not guiding or governing your own life. You’re not empowered in that area. Once you empower that area, the bully disappears. If you don’t empower yourself, the bully just keeps coming in to toughen you up, to make you stronger so you empower that area. That bully is your hero because he is actually helping you empower yourself.”

Starting high school can be both exciting and nerve-racking for those involved. This transition from childhood to adolescence is characterised by a number of personal, social and academic changes. It is normal for an adolescent to feel nervous or even slightly overwhelmed during this time. Knowing what to expect and receiving appropriate social support can aid a smooth transition into this new life stage. During their adjustment to high school, adolescents need to adapt to new teaching and assessment styles, cope with a wide range of subjects, adjust to having different teachers in different classrooms, become more responsible for their own learning, manage a heavier study and homework schedule and learn a new, and often more complex, timetable. The transition from being the eldest at school to being one of the youngest learners in a new school may be a challenge. Grade 8’s friends may be going to different schools or be in different classes and learners may need to make new friends and establish, or re-establish, their position within the peer group. The large size of their new school may also be overwhelming and intimidating at times. Parents are an important source of social support for adolescents. Talking to your child about their school day not only shows that you are interested but also boosts their mental health, happiness and wellbeing. Parental interest and involvement have been shown to have a very positive effect on adolescent behaviour and achievement. Signs that your child may be having difficulty adjusting to their new school environment include a lack of involvement at school, little or no talk about new friends, refusal to talk about school, little or no interest in doing homework, low confidence or self-esteem, self-depreciating comments, a lack of desire or refusal to go to school, a decline in academic performance and social withdrawal. As a parent, you can aid your child’s adjustment by encouraging open communication and helping

them to explore new opportunities. Activities such as learning a musical instrument, trying a new sport or joining a drama or art class can help your child to feel more engaged with their new school community. Support your child in forming healthy peer relationships. Encourage them to make new friends and to stay in touch with old friends. Let them know that new friends are welcome in your home and be ready to transport your child to their houses. Friendships play an important role in helping your child to feel connected and engaged at school. Talking to other parents can be a good way of checking whether your child’s experiences and feelings are similar to those of others. Sporting and school events are a good place to meet other parents. Adjusting to change takes time, but if things don’t stabilise after the first 6 weeks, or if your child continues to experience difficulties, don’t wait for things to improve on their own. Try to get your child to talk about how they are feeling and see whether you can work out some problem-solving strategies together. You can also consult with your child’s teacher, guidance counsellor or GP in order to establish the best way to assist your child through this transition. Linkside High 8 MAY 2014 Karakterbou

Wedersydse respek is uiters belangrik in vandag se samelewing.

Linkside Learner a World Champion Lee Roy Pieterse not only carried the name of his school, Linkside, high but also that of his country. This young dedicated karateka, proved that hard work and commitment pays off. After winning the South African Championship in his division in September 2012, Lee Roy was selected to represent South Africa at the 6th Gojukai Karate World Championship held in India from the 9th – 17th December 2013. Despite this phenomenal achievement Lee Roy remains a down to earth and disciplined individual who sets an example to all.
