BANANA SUGAR BODY SCRUB

When the bananas are starting to brown, grab those beauties and put them to use.

This one skips the oil and relies purely on the benefit of banana and the gently abrasive sugar.

• 1 ripe banana • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil (optional)

VANILLA COCONUT BROWN SUGAR SCRUB

Coconut oil is subtly fragrant and slightly miraculous. This one is a super moisturizer, and can practically double as dessert.

• 1/2 cup coconut oil • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Mix ingredients together. Rub on skin while in the shower, massage, and rinse.

Smash ingredients together with a fork into a chunky goop. Don’t over-mash or it will become too thin. If you want a banana scrub for your face, reserve some of the banana and mash it separately without sugar. In the shower, pat the sugar mixture and gently massage over your body. For your face, gently massage plain banana there, avoiding the eye area. Rinse off with warm water.

Use your homemade sugar scrub to slough away dead skin and moisturize.

Just scoop out a generous amount in the shower, and massage into your skin where you need it: knees, elbows, bottoms of feet, etc.

We can start with eating healthier and having healthy eating options for our family. This can be done by eating five fruits and vegetables each day whether that be fresh, frozen or canned. Instead of having sugary drinks, sodas, and sugary juices switch to low fat diary products and opt out to have healthy snacks instead of junk food. It’s also important to give the proper portions of food to to our children and ourselves. Cut down on the fats, get lean meats and poultry, and eat together as a family. We need to start early with our children, we can do this by involving them in the process, being a good role model for them, and having the right foods and snacks available for them.

The best way to do portions for children and us is to use a divided plate. The plate should be divided into four parts the first top half should be protein and then whole grain pastas, then the rest should be for fruit and veggies.

We can keep our families healthy with exercise, preventive care, being attuned to our bodies, avoid smoking and smoking around children.

Adults from the age of 18-64 need

to exercise 2 and half hours a week with aerobic exercises and 10 minutes at time as a minimum, but it’s best to do 5 hours a week of moderate aerobic exercise.

For children 6-17 years of age they need up to 60 minutes a day of physical activity. Children should try to incorporate exercise that help strengthen bones and muscles.

Children 2 to 5 years of age don’t really have a recommended amount of time but, it’s safe to say that they should play actively as well.

ENTREPRENEURS IN THE MAKING! Entrepreneurs Day is a highlight on the Herbert Hurd Grade Seven calendar. It is the practical assignment for the subject Economic Management Sciences and requires the children to put together a proper business plan for their ‘business’. They deal with

market research, advertising, budgets and profits and losses.

A great deal of hard work goes into the planning and organising of the day, but there is always a great deal of fun and excitement for all involved.

Sesame-seared tuna with a Sweet and Sour Twist The tuna needs to be fresh and deep red – and I mean really fresh.

INGREDIENTS: • A little oil for searing • 1 tbls, fresh ginger, grated • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 spring onions with tops very finely chopped • 1 tsp sesame oil • 1 tbls soy sauce • ¾ cup Wellingtons Sweet and Sour Sauce • 4 thick slices of raw tuna • 2 tsp sesame seeds, toasted

Serves 4

METHOD: • Mix all the ingredients together, except the tuna and sesame seeds.

• Lay the tuna in the marinade for 15 minutes, turning once.

• Remove the tuna from the marinade and set aside.

• Oil a grill pan lightly and sear the tuna on both sides – don’t take it beyond medium, it is better served rare.

• Heat the leftover marinade in a small saucepan and drizzle over tuna. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with sticky rice and stir-fried vegetables.

PEARSON HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET VS UNION HIGH SCHOOL

The Pearson 1st Cricket team got the new cricket season off to a dream start, just days before they will host their annual Pam Golding Pearson High School Cricket Festival. Pearson hosted Union High School in their annual fixture in a declaration format match.

After winning the toss and elected to bat first, Union drew first blood as the removed both openers with the score on 16. Pearson star player Kyle Jacobs, together with Luntu Tofile then batted superbly, putting on 147 for the 3rd wicket. The pair batted at a healthy runrate before Tofile fell for a well played 70 of 105 balls.

Jacobs went on to record yet another 100 for his team as he scored 121 of 142 balls. His innings included 14 boundaries and 2 sixes. After the departure of Tofile, Jacobs was joined by Daniel Doyle who excellerated the run rate, scoring a brisk 68 not out of 74 balls as the hosts massed 303/5, before declaring. Union bowler Tyler Naude picked up 2/90.

The Pearson pace bowlers backed up their batters’ performance and only needed 22 overs to dismiss the Union team for only 73 runs. Chris Dekker bowled with good pace, picking up 3/25 while Wade van Zyl returned fixtures of 3/19 after a good spell of swing bowling. Henru van Zyl finished the game for Pearson picking up 2/10 as Pearson won convincingly by 230 runs.

ENVIRO-AWARDS COMPETITION Theodor Herzl High School’s Eco-Club participated most successfully in this year’s Regional Environmental Awards Competition held at the NMB Science and Technology Centre in Uitenhage. The theme of the competition was “Save our Sky: Ozone Friendly Planet, Our Target!”. Theodor scooped first prize, not only winning R20 000 for environmentally friendly projects, but also enabling them to represent the Sarah Baartman Region in the Eastern Cape Finals in Mthatha. Theodor invited the runners up of the Regional competition from

Ndyebo Senior Secondary School in Motherwell, to accompany them for the experience even though they did not qualify to participate in the competition. Theodor came 4th and won R25 000 in the EC Finals!

Collegiate Girls’ High School (CGHS) hosted sixteen teams from around South Africa for the annual Collegiate Girls’ High School u15 Water Polo Tournament during the holidays.

Of the sixteen participating teams, Reddam House College, Constantia came out victorious, followed by three other out of town teams. Collegiate U15A placed 6th. Exciting news for Collegiate Water Polo is that twenty Collegiate Water Polo players are to represent Eastern Province at the IPT in December.

AWESOME ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT The Dux of the School, Theresa Brummer, came out on top during the recent Matric of the Year Competition, being chosen as the winner of the Academic category.

This is the crowning glory for Theresa who has excelled academically throughout her school career. Her top achievements include: achieving first place in the province in the annual ATKV Afrikaanse Olympiade for two years in a row; being awarded a SANRAL scholarship in 2014; being selected as a member of the International Young Mathematics Convention team that participated in India; receiving the Royal Society of Chemistry award at the Eskom National Science Competition; and being invited to represent South Africa at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburg, USA.

LIVINGSTONE UITREIK

Die koor het op 31 Augustus tydens ‘n middagoefening besluit dat ons graag ‘n gemeenskapsuitreik wil doen. Die koorkinders het Livingstone se kindersaal vir die uitreik gekies. Ons het besluit om sagte speelgoed, toiletware, inkleurboeke en kryte in te samel.

Ons het so baie skenkings en ook eetgoedjies gekry van koorlede, ander leerders in die skool en ook van die personeel!

Op Maandag, 14 September is ons gratis vervoer na Livingstone met een van Blunden se 60- sitplekbusse. Ons is baie dankbaar vir die groothartige ondersteuning van Blunden wat ook ons koordrag borg! Ons het ‘n paar liedere gesing en daarna geskenke aan die pasiënte uitgedeel. Met die toestemming van die pasiënte se ouers, kon ons hulle afneem saam met ons koorkinders en het ons kosbare foto’s as herinnering van hierdie uitreik geneem. Die uitgelate pasiëntjies het dadelik begin inkleur, hul gunsteling teddie vasgehou en met die koorlede gesels.

Our choristers were deeply touched by the gratitude and joy of the little patients. The heartache of the little ones also did not go

unnoticed. The nursing staff also received two care parcels with products they can use in taking care of patients who are less fortunate.

Many patients don’t have their own towels and toiletries.

The nursing staff of the paediatrics ward expressed their gratitude and our 50 choristers are very eager to take part in another community outreach project in 2016.

This outreach has been the gift that keeps on giving! We have received so many donations, that we are going to bless another charity, ACVV Forest Hill, with the remainder of the soft toys, books and toiletries.

A big thank you goes out to every parent, staff member, chorister and parent who made a donation for our outreach!
