AWSUM Celebrity Interview With only his guitar and breathtaking, unusal voice gymnastics, Chris Chameleon takes his listerners on a journey to places of musical magic and wonderment. AWSUM News chatted to him about his music and other things close to his heart. Q You have released the long-awaited album jy en ek en ek en jy earlier this year, for which you composed all the music yourself. What was the inspiration for this album? What was different about your process in creating this album? A The theme of love has always interested me. I like the timelessness of love. Things said about love 3 000 years ago could be as true today. Where I wrote about love on my previous albums, it was about an experience here with someone, and there with someone else. On jy en ek en ek en jy all the songs are about one person only: my beloved, whom I’ve met in 2011. In this sense this album is unique in my repertoire because it has been fully inspired by one person only. The process was unusal, because I wrote the texts within a week or so as free verse, in 2012, just to express my feelings at the time (feelings that I have to admit are burning as brightly now as then!). Because it’s all free verse – almost prose – the composition of it is not always logical. When I started, the process was very enjoyable, and I carried on with the project. One will realise upon listening to the songs how often I played with phrasing to shape the texts in a light song form. Q Jy and Daniella Deysel, the poet with whom you recorded the album Posduif in June 2014, make a lovely couple. What is your love story?

Q What do you enjoy doing in your free time (when you are not gardening)?

A We met each other in 2011 and it was love at first sight. We are still deeply in love, to the extent that we have to keep ourselves in check when with other people for the sake of propriety (chuckle).

A I take walks in nature, do research (about anything – everything interests me), enjoy the company of my loved ones, and believe it if you will, make music.

Q What inspires you creatively and personally? Who are ‘your people’? A I am not sure that anything specifically inspires me. Inspiration does not work like that for me – it is not a fountain from which you can just drink (otherwise I would have pitched my tent there!). Inspiration is for me something that tackles me at the strangest times, and then one must do what you can with it. My type of person is someone with integrity, of whom a beautiful heart is visible in the eyes, and who doesn’t mosey along in the right lane! Q Most of the music on jy en ek en ek en jy are love poems. You are also well known for your compositions of the poems of iconic Afrikaans poet Ingrid Jonker. What is your relationship with the enigma that is Ingrid? A I have, like most of my Afrikaans peers, been introduced to Jonker’s work at school. A poem here, in at the one ear and out at the other. But in 2003 I saw a striking documentary about her life while I was on tour in the Netherlands. I was immediately grabbed by the intensity and honesty of her work. It was only two years later that 7de Laan asked me to compose a poem – any poem – of any Afrikaans poet of my choice for one of their programmes. The single song became two, and shortly after a whole album, which then became my first Afrikaans release. Her work is extraordinarily musical, which has an irresistible appeal for a musician. Q You are a great proponent and practitioner of gardening and growing your own veggies. What are you busy with at the moment? What is your biggest gardening pleasure? A My nasturtiums, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and beetroot are starting to come up, so my main gardening function at the moment is to pray for a good rain season.

AWSUM NEWS AUGUST 2017

Q Why Chameleon? A We all adapt to our environment. We are not the same person with your beloved as you are with your boss, your colleagues and your staff. This is not hypocritical – it is rather that our immediate environment highlights different aspects of ourselves. And in that regard we are like chameleons: the environment determines our hue. I identify with this characteristic since 1988 and have decided to make it my own. Q What was your journey to become a professional musician? Have you been a musician since childhood? A I’ve always been musical, but only started playing an instrument (guitar) in matric, which made it possible to capture my own compositions. I am not sure how good I am at music, but if you knew how bad I was in so many other things, you will hope I stick with music. Q What is your message for our learners about life, love, and how to achieve success? A Success is only two things: love and happiness. A whole lot of other things are sold under the banner of success, but that is just nonsense. If you are going to link your idea of success to money, fame, acknowledgement, you are setting yourself up for huge disappointment, because even the brightest starts eventually fade. I have talked to and worked with people who have achieved the highest pinnacles in the entertainment industry, and have noticed an emptiness by many who were there during that time, and with those who have achieved the highest and started to fade, there is sometimes worry and even bitterness. No one will always be the cat’s whiskers for ever. It is great while it lasts, but I would suggest that you do not let it define you. Animals and children, rather than kings, will give you the best indication of your worth.

Let’s Cook! This is my favourite time of the year: the lemons on my trees are turning bright yellow and I just love getting my hands onto them.

Lemon Pickles INGREDIENTS • 10 very ripe unwaxed lemons • 3 tsp salt • ½ tsp ground turmeric • ¼ tsp ground fennel seed • 2 ½ tsp chilli powder • ½ tsp ground cumin • 1 ½ cups caster sugar METHOD • Place the lemons into a large saucepan with 4 cups of water and boil gently till the skins are just soft, remove from the saucepan with a slotted spoon and let them cool. • Cut the lemons into quarters over a large boil so that you can catch any juices escaping from them. • Place the lemons into the bowl with the juices and scatter over the salt, turmeric, ground fennel, chilli powder and ground cumin, give it a stir to coat the lemons, leave them to macerate for 12 minutes. • Stir in the caster sugar and stir till the sugar dissolves. • Spoon into well sterilized jars with tight fitting lids, store in the fridge and use within three months. • You can start using the pickle after three days.

When life gives you

– just cook up a storm! I can’t remember when last I took a day off to do whatever I wanted to do, a day where I never looked at an email or answered my phone ... haaaaaaaaaaaaaa well that will never happen, but I did take a half day off to do just that. I signed up for a magazine readers’ day of pure spoiling and pampering in Franschhoek. After a delicious lunch, my pampering began with a full body massage, facial, pedicure and an Indian head massage. You can’t believe how hungry a girl feels after all that pampering. Now we all know that Franschhoek has a lot to offer on the food front and I have had many delicious meals there, but never have I had a curry there. Imagine my surprise when I bumped into an old chef friend at a lovely Indian restaurant in the village. When she discovered I was in the restaurant, she did what we chefs do for each other: take the agony out of deciding what to eat from a menu so enticing we can’t choose, she did the ordering for us. One of the condiments that I really enjoyed with my poppadums was the lemon pickles, and here is my twist on them. This is the perfect time to make them, as lemons are in season, so make a few jars and give them to your friends as gifts.

BERGVLIET PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 715 1103 (e) secretary@bergvlietprimary.co.za Global Round of the World Scholar’s Cup Bergvliet Primary had nine Grade 7 learners representing our school at the Global Round of the World Scholar’s Cup held in Cape Town from 11 to 15 August. There were 32 countries from around the world competing in team debates, scholars’ challenges, collaborative essay writing and individual challenges. This was an incredible

opportunity to make new friends and develop new knowledge and skills outside of the school curriculum. The BPS teams all did well, earning a variety of medals in the various subject areas, with one of our teams qualifying for the Tournament of Champions held at Yale University, USA in November. We are proud of all our teams!

Young international soccer player Luke de Klerk (Grade 4W) has recently been selected to represent his local soccer club, Tramway FC, at U12 level to compete in the The Gothia Cup in Sweden (the world’s largest and most international youth football tournament). Luke, who was the youngest player of his team, has played in all six competitive matches where they have progressed all the way to the last 16 teams of the competition where they were eliminated by an academy from Russia. The experience of traveling abroad with a sport team has been a real testament to his commitment to his sport and has been an invaluable cultural learning experience.

WCED Provincial Visual Art Celebration The WCED Provincial Visual Art Celebration was held at Koeberg Primary School on Thursday, 17 August. 500 Artworks from schools in the district were submitted and our very own Teagan Schaffers won gold in the Grade 4-6 Section. Teagan’s artwork involved drawing his classmates’ profiles, to create overlapping spaces and then filling in the gaps with pastel, collage and paint. The theme was ‘Celebrating my World’. His artwork will be on exhibition at the Iziko National Gallery during September 2017. Congratulations, Teagan, and well done!

THE GROVE PRIMARY SCHOOL (t) 021 674 2077 (e) info@thegrove.co.za Soccer Festival at Knysna

The Grove Conversation On Saturday 19 August The Grove Primary School hosted its first Grove Conversation. Over 120 parents and teachers attended the successful event. The theme of this year’s Conversation was ‘Our Pillars of Excellence, Inclusion and Affordability’. These pillars provide the foundations for learning, teaching, how the school is run, and for The Grove remaining a truly wonderful school.

The Girls and Boys U13 Soccer Teams spent a weekend in Knysna competing in a Soccer Festival. Despite the cold weather, there was a great deal of fun and lots of excellent play. As it was soon after the fires, which were still a major topic of conversation amongst the Knysna locals, we were looking forward to seeing the people we knew and being able to see first hand the devastation caused. We were able to take a large number of second hand Grove T-shirts with us, which we handed to the coordinators. The T-shirts were very gratefully accepted and will be used by the Knysna Sports School and in the Rhenendal community. The Grovites displayed true Grove values through their behaviour and positive attitude. We received a number of very favourable comments and we are proud of our teams.

GROOTE SCHUUR HIGH SCHOOL (t) 021 674 2165 (e) sysop@gshs.co.za Rondomtalie gains momentum This year’s drama production, Rondomtalie, written and directed by Mr Brink Nelson, has been doing very well at festivals. This original script was conceptualised by Mr Nelson and the music composed by Mr Quickfall. The technical enhancement, lead by Mr Nelson, is brilliantly executed by the learners in the technical team. Co-director, Mr Jan Brits, proved to be a force to be reckoned with. The show’s run started on a good note at the Fraserburg Logan Toneelfees on 4 August. This continued to the Montague Youth Arts Festival on 11 August, where the production brought home, amongst others, nine gold medals and five double gold medals. The best actor of the festival trophy went to Carvin Weitz in his lead role as Nar. At the Durbanville Schools Drama Festival, the show went on to achieve excellent results. Every cast member, acting and technical alike, received medals and the following top trophies were awarded: • Kevin Lorenzen Memorial trophy for Technical Excellence to Mr Nelson • Trophy for Technical Enhancement • Trophy for Best Actress in a Supporting Role to Mishka Brown

Iconic South African musical Sophiatown Pinelands High School staged the iconic South African musical Sophiatown during August. The play is set in the 1950s, during the implementation of the apartheid government’s Group Areas Act and the forced removals to Meadowlands. The small cast of 15 consistently held the audience’s attention and the emotional maturity the cast displayed in boldly tackling difficult and relevant South African issues far exceeded their years. The school’s Jazz Combo held the performance together while transporting audiences back to the 1950s. The play ended with an acoustic version of Zahara’s Ndiza outside in the rain. This hard-hitting show was a sell-out success.
