As I flip over my desk calendar to February, I can’t help but feel giddy at the promise of love and romance soon to fill the air. All of a sudden, I’m humming “All you need is love”.

For this month of love, AWSUM will be jumping on the romantic bandwagon.

DIY CANDLE STICKS

Go green for the month of love and repurpose old pieces of wood into candle sticks.

YOU’LL NEED: Thick pieces of wood Saw and hammer Cutting tongs Panel pin nails WHAT TO DO: • Start by selecting a few different pieces of wood.

• If the stumps are uneven, use the saw to resize them – and to make sure they

don’t fall over.

• Hammer a nail into the piece of wood until there is approximately 1.5cm sticking out. This will be used to hold the candle.

• Once the nail has been secured, use the cutting tongs to remove the head.

• You can also hammer nails into the side of the piece of wood to add a decorative

element. I made some birds from modelling clay.

• Be careful when placing the candle on to the exposed nail, as using too much force might cause the candle to split. To avoid this, warm the nail with a lighter before trying to position the candle.

VOLSCHENK GENIET HUL KLEURE-ATLETIEKBYEENKOMS! Op Dinsdag, 27 Januarie 2015, het Laerskool Volschenk se atletiekseisoen met ‘n genotvolle kleurebyeenkoms afgeskop. Die byeenkoms het gedurende skoolure plaasgevind, sodat so veel moontlik leerders kans kon kry om hul slag op die atletiekveld te wys.

Die twee kleurgroepe, die Rooispan en die Blouspan, het mekaar al van vroeg af met hul oulike optogte die stryd op die veld aangesê. Deur die dag het hul puntsgewys kop-aan-kop geloop, maar die Rooispan het uiteindelik

geseëvier. Die aanmoediging van beide spanne en die tooisels van hul dirigente en kapteine was van hoogstaande gehalte.

Ds. Deon Beyers, NG predikant van Riversdal-Wes, was vir die EEN-EN TWINTIGSTE keer aankondiger tydens Volschenk se kleurebyeenkoms. Die Vollies kan hierdie ware Volschenkvriend nie genoeg bedank nie!

Pragtige prestasies is gelewer. Rekords is verbeter deur: Bernard Erasmus (seuns o/8: 60meter), Zelda Horne

(dogters o/9: verspring), Rochell Wilken (dogters o/10: gewigstoot), Noah Hayward (s o/11: 1200m), Alika Steyn (dogters o/13: diskus en gewigstoot) en Lazlo Paulsen (seuns o/13: 1500m en 800m).

Daar was heelwat aanspraakmakers op die Victor en Victrix Ludorum van die dag. Uiteindelik het Jovan Simon (Victor) en Anine Oosthuizen (Victrix) met die louere weggestap.

Die dag was beslis ‘n hoogtepunt op die Volliekalender!

Die Hof het twee vrae gehad maak. daartoe moet ly om die moraal van individue te wat beantwoord moes word: Wat is die stappe wat 'n kredietverskaffer moet neem om te verseker dat die kennisgewing van wanbetaling Artikel 16(1) van die Grondwet maak voorsiening bevorder en te beskerm. ‘n verbruiker bereik voordat verbruiker mag begin? wat benadering moet die kredietverskaffer bewys ten einde Hof te dat elke persoon die'n reg het litigasie tot vryheid vanTweedens, Hierdie was ook gevolg in die BDS bevredig dat hy sy wat verpligting behoorlik nagekom het odie m lewering die svtatutêre kennisgewing aan te bring.

THE PERFECT PARTY Chocolate and cherry cream meringue gâteau

Serves 6-8

The inspiration for making chocolate Pavlova (which is, in essence, what this gâteau is), came from dear friend and wonderful cook Stephanie Pattinson, whom I regard as a second mom. It’s a really special dessert: meringue stacked high with layers of cream and melted chocolate, and sprinkled with cherries.

True decadence, and definitely worth the effort.

Use a metal spoon to fold in the vanilla, vinegar, corn flour and cocoa powder lightly but thoroughly.

Spoon the meringue mixture on to the prepared baking sheet. Make four circles, each with a 20cm diameter, with fairly thick bases and raised edges.

Bake for one hour then turn off the heat.

Leave the meringue in the oven until completely cold (preferably overnight).

For the chocolate meringue • 8 egg whites • pinch of salt • 450g castor sugar • 10ml vanilla extract • 20ml white vinegar • 40ml corn flour, sifted • 30ml cocoa powder, sifted

To make the filling Place the chocolate and 200ml cream in a double-boiler and stir over low heat until the chocolate is just melted. Leave to cool completely.

Stir the vanilla into the 300ml whipped cream.

Place a meringue disc on a serving platter, spread with a quarter of the chocolate mixture followed by a quarter of the whipped cream. Top with another meringue disc and repeat three more times. Garnish the final layer of chocolate and cream with fresh fruit and the optional grated chocolate.

For the layers • 180g good quality dark chocolate • 200ml cream (to melt with chocolate)* • 10ml vanilla extract or seed scrapings of 1 vanilla pod • 300ml cream, whipped until just stiff* • fresh cherries or strawberries for garnishing • grated chocolate for garnishing (optional) *this recipe uses 500ml cream in total To make the meringue Preheat the oven to 140˚C. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.

Whisk the egg whites and salt until just stiff. Gradually mix in the castor sugar, one spoon at a time. Whisk the mixture until glossy and thick.

Coffee and hazelnut alternative Omit the cocoa powder from the meringue recipe and add 20ml instant espresso coffee powder to the mixture instead. Once the meringue discs are baked, layer them with whipped cream and caramel-dipped hazelnuts.

Dewalt Jonck het haar prestasie by die S0/9 herhaal. Quintus Lutsch (maar net 6 jaar oud) het sy man gestaan en ‘n agste plek vir hardloop en negende plek vir swem behaal. Emma en Dewalt is albei vir die SWD-span gekies.

KLEUREATLETIEK Voorbereidingskool George het onlangs hul kleure-atletiek gehou. Die son was ampertjies so warm soos al die kinderhartjies saam!

Karli Olivier van Laerskool Outeniqua het die afgelope vakansie Suid-Afrika verteenwoordig by ‘n Internasionale Gimnastiek Kompetisie in Namibië. Op klubvlak ontvang Karli die volgende trofeë: beste tuimel gimnas en beste senior vroue artistiese gimnas
