Hold on tight, I suspect that this month will go by in the blink of an eye. This is the last issue of 2015, in which AWSUM will be boasting with your school news and achievements for the year … The next issue will be filled with lots of festive treats and holiday content, just in time for you to get into Christmas mode. This year has certainly been busy, and for some perhaps more challenging than for others. But if you’re reading this, you’ve made it!
We’d like to thank all of the teachers and marketers of each school for submitting and sharing your school news, events and excellent achievements. To everyone who has started prepping for finals, we’d like to wish you the best of luck. Especially the Matric class of 2015. Laerskool Blanco se leerlingraad-verkiesing het in stilte, orde en groot spanning vir die Graad 6 leerders, geskied. Die bekendstelling van die kandidate was baie opwindend en vermaaklik en uit die toesprake van die kandidate, blyk dit dat 2016 se leerlingraad-span, groot planne in die mou voer vir die skool.
Rossouw Gericke van Laerskool Park ontvang die “Champion of Champions”trofee en sertifikaat vir die beste prestasie in sy ouderdomsgroep en vlak vir C-Maths tydens die streekskompetisie op 20 Oktober. Geluk met hierdie goeie prestasie!

Gedurende die afgelope Oktobervakansie het 24 avonturiers hulle TV’s en selfone verwerp en die beeldskone Wildekus gaan verken. Niemand het presies geweet wat om te verwag nie, maar die verwagtinge wat daar egter was, is dubbel en dwars oortref. Ons het onder andere by Pondo’s oornag. Daar het ons te make gekry met ‘n egte shebien, ‘n longdrop, tradisionele etes, stories van hul kultuur, danse wat die vloere laat bewe het en ons het geleer hoe moeilik dit is om te bad in ‘n waskom. Hier het ons ook geleer eet met ‘n lepel en vurk, ons het selfs ons brood
gesmeer sonder ‘n mes… Die dae gevul met stap, perdry en roei, het verbygevlieg. Daar was vele te leer daaruit, soos om eerder nie met plakkies te stap nie, Transkei-perde raak aan die gallop d.m.v. klikgeluide te hoor en dat kanoe’s wel kán sink. Die aande is omgekuier en kaartspeltjies het vir groot sports gesorg – “Mafia” het vir sekeres ewige vertroueprobleme geskep. Die toer is met ‘n hoogtepunt afgesluit toe ons op die strand ‘n “bonfire” gebou het - langs die branders en onder die sterre met die reuk van gebraaide marshmallows orals.

Serves 6
I love the warm, sweet, almost peppery aroma of caraway seeds, with their hint of aniseed. And you can taste the sunshine in the sultanas… INGREDIENTS: For the dressing: • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 10 ml orange zest • 5 ml ginger, freshly grated • 1 red chilli, sliced • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice • 2 tbls Wellington’s red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup sesame oil • 1 tbls honey • 2 tbls Wellington’s Peach Chutney
• Salt to taste Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend. The slaw: • 3 large green apples, skin on, sliced • 250 g green cabbage, finely shredded • 250 g red cabbage, finely shredded • 1cup walnuts, toasted • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, toasted • 1/2 cup sultanas
• 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped • 1/2 cup mint, chopped • 2.5 ml caraway seeds, toasted and crushed (optional) METHOD: Toss all the ingredients together and mix well with the orange dressing just before serving.

5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR POOL ALGAE FREE DURING THE SUMMER HEAT Well it’s that time of year folks. Summer is here, vacations are being taken left and right, the heat is on, and for some pool owners, this all can equate to that green thing that makes pool ownership a frustrating experience … Algae! With today’s technology, there’s really no reason anyone should be having problems with algae in the first place. Here is your summer survival list of 5 keys to ensuring your pool doesn’t
have problems with the “green monster” during these hot months: 1. Keep your sanitizer levels up!!! For most, this means your chlorine needs to be kept at optimal levels, all day, every day. This is also why we’re such big advocates of salt chlorine generators at River Pools, as they manage to keep a consistent level of chlorine in the pool at all times, preventing the growth of algae in the first place. And for those of you not using salt, make sure to shock your pool at least weekly during this time of year. 2. Keep the water moving: One key to remember is that algae likes to start when water stops, which is why it’s a good idea to always keep your pool water filtering. This is also why most modern pools have variable speed pumps, which allows constant water flow without

the high energy usage. 3. Use the pool: Did you know often times the best way of keep a pool clean and free of debris is by swimming in it as much as possible? Yep, that’s certainly the case, and it’s because swimmers stir up the water and debris, allowing the skimmer to catch more particles and ultimately filtering the pool better. 4. Keep an eye on your filter: This goes back to #2, but if your sand or cartridge get too clogged up, the
water will slow down, which can hurt filtration as well as chlorine production...which is bad news. 5. Add an algaecide weekly: Although this isn’t always necessary, it’s another means of algae prevention, and something that certainly won’t hurt your chances of having a hassle-free summer with your pool. So there you have it, 5 ways to keep your pool algae free during the hot summer months.

PREPARATORY ATHLETICS
Our Inter- House athletics meeting took place in perfect conditions. Great performances came from Luard Elstadt, Junior Victor Ludorum, Kate Bartels, Junior Victrix Ludorum, Kirsten Barbour, Senior Victor Ludorum, Michael Papenfus, Courtenay House and Joel Jacobs, Senior Victor Ludorum.
PAPENFUS BROTHERS
Michael (U13) and older brother Richard Papenfus from Glenwood House each scored a century on Saturday, 31 October 2105. They achieved this rare accomplishment in their teams’ victories against Laerskool Hartenbos and Outeniqua Hoërskool. Michael scored 108 (92 balls) and Richard 105 (115 balls).
Luard Elstadt set a new record with this mighty push in the shot put.
The U6’s enjoyed the challenge of the shuttle relay race.
CAPTAINS
Glenwood House produced three captains out of four teams representing SWD Cricket at the National tournaments. Michael Papenfus was selected as captain for the u13 team with the week being hosted in Johannesburg. Joshua Kleu will captain the u17 team hosted in Pietermaritzburg and Jean du Plessis will lead the u19 team in Port Elizabeth. Good luck to the boys and the SWD teams. Other players included in the teams: Carl Swanevelder and Kirk Nevay (u13) Shaun Wagner (u15) Ruan Moolman (u17) Richard Papenfus (u19).

NEW RECORD IN SPEED WALKING
On Saturday 31 October Moné Geldenhuis took part in the following events in Oudtshoorn for SWD Athletics:- 5000m Speed Walk, 1500m Speed Walk and Shot Put. Moné came first in all 3 events, setting a new record in the 1500m. This is a great achievement for Moné - AWESOME - keep it up!!
POLO INTERNATIONAL HORSE TRIALS
Samantha de Villiers had a very successful weekend competing at the Polo International Horse Trials in JHB this past weekend. Out of 44 competitors she finished 7th place and was one of ten competitors in the class not to get any time penalties in the country. She also rode for South Africa in the African Shield Team Competition and Team South Africa won! What a fabulous experience for this young rider! Well done Samantha!

Congratulations to the Hellstroms! Robyn Hellstrom has also been selected as a finalist for the School Sport Woman of the Year 2015 for her sailing performances throughout the year both in South Africa and at the World Championships. The event is on the 6th November 2015 and wish her all the very best of luck. PREFECT SELECTION CAMP VOLLIES SE HARDE WERK WORD BELOON
44 Gr 6 learners were selected to go on a prefect selection camp on Friday 30 October. They had to build their own shelter and cook their own meal over a self-made fire. On Saturday they took part in many team building activities. Much fun was had by all.
