awsum holiday guide
winter 2015
Winter is in full swing and we’re all getting ready for the much anticipated June/July holiday!!! Winter holidays have always held a very special place in my heart. Going on a long journey with my family, which normally started at stupid o’clock. Followed by many rounds of playing silly I SPY games in the car and stopping on the side of the road for padkos were amongst the things I remember very clearly.
pg 4
The modern day pressures have made holidays like this a rarity for some South African families. If you’re amongst the fortunate few to go on an amazing journey, enjoy!!! And if your family is stuck at home, make a point of it to do something together... Even if you need to play I SPY on a bus or taxi. Being together and spending time with your loved ones is the most valuable way to spend your time.

Cape Town: Southern Suburbs
Kirstenbosch Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway The Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway is a new curved steel and timber bridge that winds and dips its way through and over the trees of the Arboretum. Inspired by a snake skeleton, and informally called ‘The Boomslang’ (meaning tree snake), it is a lowmaintenance, low-impact sculptural raised walkway. The Walkway takes the visitor from the forest floor into and through the trees and bursts out above the canopy, giving spectacular panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, Garden and Cape Flats. This walkway is 130m long, narrow and slender, with a few wider viewpoint areas, and lightly snakes its way through the canopy, in a discreet, almost invisible way. The walkway is crescent-shaped and takes advantage of the sloping ground; it touches the forest floor in two places, and raises visitors to 12 m above ground. It is more than just a traditional boardwalk like a snake, it winds and dips. Winter cold and flu fighting tips:
The season of colds and flu is upon us, but fear not, we have a secret weapon to nip it in the bud. McNab’s SuperGuard is a convenient and affordable single dose sachet that provides you with a carefully formulated dose of the vitamins, minerals, and herbs your body needs to fight off winter viruses. This six-tablet combination contains immuneboosting ingredients like vitamins A, B, C, D and E, which help your body fight off harmful micro-organisms, and minerals like copper, selenium, and zinc which are essential in maintaining an effective immune system and preventing common viral infections. What sets McNab’s SuperGuard apart is super-ingredient Sutherlandia*, Africa’s very own immune-boosting herb, which has been used for centuries by many different cultures to combat infection and boost immune function. At McNab’s we realise that feeling sick drains your body of precious energy and that is why McNab’s SuperGuard not only boosts your immune system, but it also gives you a much needed boost of energy. Winter cold and flu fighting tips: • Avoid junk food and choose hearty vegetable soups to keep you warmed up this winter. • Get at least 7 hours of sleep each night to give your body a chance to build your immune system.

Drink alcohol moderately – excessive drinking can suppress your immune system for a few days afterwards. Be proactive by boosting your immune system with a dose of SuperGuard every two days. Reacting to the first sneeze or itchy throat is probably too late.
PS: Once you have recovered from your cold and flu, why not try McNab’s SuperCharge your daily dose of sustained energy. Our modern lifestyles of little sleep, long work hours, eating junk food, and drinking lots of caffeine and alcohol often results in a micro nutrient deficiency, causing low energy levels. McNab’s SuperCharge combats this with a carefully selected range of multivitamins, minerals, omega oils, and herbs such as Superherb Siberian Ginseng for an extra boost of all-day energy and all-round wellness.
WIN with McNab’s 5 lucky readers could win a McNab’s hamper, each consisting of McNab’s SuperGuard and two SuperCharge Hi Energy bars for that extra bit of energy and snack on the go. To enter simply like us on Facebook and comment: #McNabsWinter Competition closes 31 July 2015 T&C’s apply

Make your own rock monster magnets! Source: http://coastalways.blogspot.com
These colourful little dudes will brighten even the dullest of kitchen appliances... Now you can finally do something with all those pebbles you (eh hem, I mean, your kid’s) collect at the beach. Step 1 Collect some pebbles. Medium sized are best. Too big and they will need super strong magnets to stay on the fridge, too small and they will be too fiddly to paint. 3 - 5cm diameter is a good size. White or light coloured stones are easier to paint and the smoother the better for the same reason. Step 2 Gather your materials. Acrylic paints Medium sized and small paint brushes Small Magnets Strong (or Super) Glue Fine tipped black permanent marker pen(sharpie) Step 3 Paint those pebbles. We used acrylic paints. They are great for painting on pebbles and really durable. We painted 2 coats on each side of the pebbles (allowing drying time between coats) for a nice deep coloured shiny finish. Step 4 Monster Faces -Grrrrrr! Draw or paint a monster expression on your pebbles remembering to leave some space for their eyes. Let your imagination run wild a lil’ bit, or just copy some of our expressions. I like the toothy grins best. Step 5 Googly eyes. I asked the children to place the eyes, one two and even 3!, and then I glued them myself with some really strong glue. Strong glue and children obviously not a good combination so this is a job for super mom. Step 6 Magnets. So now you have your cute looking pebbles all painted, it’s onto the magnets. I stuck 2 magnets to some of the bigger, heavier stones, just to be sure they wouldn’t slip down the fridge with the weight. I left the glue overnight to dry as a good bond is really essential here. Step 7 Put them on your fridge, step back and admire

Spicy hot cauliflower salad
By Jenny Morris Follow Jenny @jennymorrischef
Serves 4 Ingredients: • 4 tbls olive oil • 1 tsp white mustard seeds • 2 cm fresh root ginger, peeled and cut into thin strips • 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped • ½ tsp turmeric • 2 green chillies, sliced in half lengthways • 3 cups snowy white cauliflower florets • Juice of 1 lemon • ½ tsp salt • Wellingtons Chutney of your choice • 2 tbls coriander, roughly chopped Method: Heat the olive oil, add the mustard seeds and cook till they pop. They jump all over so be careful – and don’t burn them! Add the ginger and garlic, turmeric and chillies and fry gently while stirring all the time for about 2 minutes. Add the cauliflower, give it a good stir to coat with the spices and cook for 8- 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the lemon juice, stir in the Chutney, salt and coriander and give it a good toss. Serve hot. Tip: This is great as a salad served at room temperature, or served hot as a side dish. It also works as a vegetarian dish served with fragrant saffron rice.
