Rise Up for Womankind

Rise Up for Womankind (R.U.W.) is an advocacy starting as an online activity for the marginalized sector, women and girls, and the group’s S.Y. 2020-2021 Christian Values 1 — Lasallian Studies subject. This e-booklet was made possible with the distance collaboration of grade 11 students from the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) strand.

• aim: to educate, give awareness and empowerment, and spark hope, motivation, and change to people of any age and gender in this new normal • approach: provide as much necessary, insightful, relevant, and reliable information as possible in a freely accessible social media platform • purpose: the first step towards the members’ advocacy and an initial contribution towards the whole movement

“Women’s rights continue to be violated and disrespected disproportionately due to social norms, legal

discrimination,

and

economic

inequality

around the world.” (Ott, 2017) Women, in general, have been looked down

upon for many years in our society. They were given

limited

opportunities

and

freedom

compared to their counterparts solely because of their gender. Oppression/abuse, assault, discrimination,

disrespect,

inequality,

and

deprivation of women and girls' rights share a

common factor—marginalization.

Regardless of their age, status, and background, females are seen as inferior, as the “weaker” gender. They are perceived as the emotional ones, the ones who are less intelligent (or

foolish) and better off at home, the ones who are often unable to fight for themselves/their rights, and the ones who are acquiescent to men. However, men and boys are identified as the

“strong”

and

ones,

the

intelligent ones, the powerful and influential ones, the political ones, and the ones who are ought to be served and pleased. Girls ought to learn how to babysit and do housework, “fix” their appearances or basically look good and presentable, be as thin and graceful as possible,

On the other hand, women are still the most vulnerable regarding their age, status, and background.

They

are

often

victimized,

criticized, sexualized, and materialized; they are to depend on men—whether by chance or by

choice—desperately,

forced,

or

even

helplessly. Their roles in the society are subordinate: women are the housewives, nuns,

queens, secretaries, assistants, teachers, nurses, attendants, and maids, while men are the breadwinners, priests, kings, presidents, bosses, engineers,

pilots,

operators,

carpenters,

electricians, technicians, and much more. Just the same, girls are the cheerleaders and ballet

(Kenya) — “Women listen to the gospel preached by men, clean the church used by

men and cook during ceremonies officiated by men. This calls for concerted efforts to try and find out exactly what went wrong that

being

marginalized one way or another. From the way they dress and style their hair to how they think, speak, and behave; who they choose to be friends with, where they decide to go, and what time do they go home; how they plan for their future; what profession do they want and what job do they take; what achievements do they accomplish; and even in stating their own worth and identity.

Social marginalization is not something new, but it does not mean that how they occur would always remain the same. Thus, the capability of people to provide solutions should transcend the complexity of the situations. “Over half of the world’s population is female, yet they unjustly receive an unfair balance in life from conception. Not one society is spared from its second-class treatment of the female population … Education, healthcare, employment, and lowerclass value are some of the obstacles facing girls in the world today.” (Santos, 2018) Many centuries ago, women were not allowed to go to school or work. At present times, though, the average salaries of women

are lower in contrast with men. According to ilo.org, finding jobs is also difficult for women; if employed, they

get

into

relatively

substandard

jobs

in

vulnerable conditions, often caused by employment discrimination. In addition, it was only in the year 1920 that women were given the right to vote in the

USA, and only in the year 1937 in the Philippines.

Even in very progressive countries, women and

girls (including their babies or fetuses) also suffer from

domestic

violence

and

numerous

inequalities to their male counterparts. According to the World Health Organization, almost onethird (30%) of all women who have been in a relationship have experienced physical and/or

sexual violence by their intimate partner. The prevalence estimates of intimate partner violence range from 23.2% in high-income countries and 24.6% in the WHO Western Pacific region to 37% in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean region and 37.7% in the WHO

South-East Asia region.

Globally, as many as 38% of all murders of women were committed by intimate partners. In addition to intimate partner violence, 7% of women reports globally having been sexually assaulted by someone other than a partner,

although data for non-partner sexual violence are more

limited.

Men

against

women

mostly

perpetrate intimate partner and sexual violence.

According to Santos (2018), women and girls are

abused by their husbands and fathers; young girls in many countries are exploited by sex tourism and trafficking

and

forced

into

arranged

marriages.

Furthermore, due to the extensive education gap, twice as many women are illiterate as men. Girls, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, are infected by

HIV/AIDS at enormous rates by two to three times higher than boys. Girls are also more likely to become victims of trafficking or forced into the sex industry than boys—with at least half a million under age 18, they make up the largest group in the sex industry. Women and girls around the world have been striving for independence since the dawn of time; it’s about time we woke up and saw that by marginalizing girls, we are only crippling our society.

Women have been marginalized for decades upon decades. Ever since the birth of modern society, women have been oppressed; they

are

oppressed, although

they

are not

deserving. Women's marginalization only happened because of the distorted and corrupted views of men of the past and their primitive thinking. I believe women have suffered enough. Now is the best time for us to act, to fight. It

is

essential

marginalization

to is

about

undeserving,

this and

because, its

basis

for

me,

is

just

nonsensical. Today, where we can easily advocate, where more people get to be educated, I firmly believe that it is the best time for us to act. Women have suffered this undeserving oppression for far too long, and it's time we end it. (Tan, 2020)

Women have been seen as inferior in our society ever since the world can remember. In history, we have learned that society had taken away women's rights and freedom— political, educational, etc.—as the world slowly progressed into where we are now, where women ought to have equal rights as men. Although the law protects women's rights, somehow the society still manages to make women feel as if they have no say in the community; and that has to change. The women of the future need not suffer the way women of this generation do. For this to happen, we have to start a movement to be the eye-openers to this generation. I think it

shouldn't be hard to spread awareness regarding this since the youth these days—although not everyone—have been very open-minded regarding these topics and are pretty much quickly informed, only that others don't know where to start and how to help. Women deserve better, and they will get what they deserve and more if we just act on it and start the change with ourselves. (Juangco, 2020)

Throughout De La Salle's life, he has shown great courage, faith in God, much patience, and significant contribution to society. Consequently, Lasallians follow the principles implied by the founder:

faith

in

the

presence

of

God,

proclamation of the Gospel, quality education, concern for the poor and social

injustice,

and

an

community with respect for all persons. Moreover, part of our guiding principles is to "express concern and compassion

for the plight of the vulnerable and marginalized

sectors of society and

Every change starts from within; change begins with oneself. Getting involved with this advocacy, it must now be clear that everybody has a right to be given a chance to speak up, educate and defend themselves, spark change, and improve personal and societal situations. Demarginalization and/or empowerment of women and girls require both the

females'

cooperation—it should be all-inclusive to succeed. Men (boys) should be taught at a young age how they should treat women, and women (girls), too, should be informed of their rights, how to exercise and get a hold of them, and how to cope with unpleasant situations. Marginalization will not end if

Hi! You can call me Tiff, for short, and I am turning 17 years old this January! I am a deep thinker, an enthusiastic learner,

a

passionate

human being. Although I don’t read a lot, I’ve learned the most valuable life lessons from quotes. I am just a simple girl with a big heart, and I love warm hugs! I’ve always dreamt of a healthy environment peace;

world taking

action towards it. I am a very grateful and honored child of God and I ought to do my best in doing everything for Him, through Him.
