dock & bay
lightweight microfibre beach & travel towels We’re excited to introduce this up and coming brand to New Zealand. Dock & Bay is the result of two people’s entrepreneurial dreams. As a traveller, Andy found normal cotton beach towels took up too much room in his bag. Benno loved the beach and used a lightweight microfibre towel for convenience, but always found them too small and dull. When Andy (a Brit) and Benno (an Aussie) became friends in London, their ideas came together. The concept was simple – they wanted to produce

lightweight towels that were easy to pack, but where you didn’t have to compromise on size or style. In typical entrepreneurial fashion, they began their company by pulling a red curtain off the wall and sticking pieces of white paper to it, building their first prototype towel. Being travellers themselves, Andy and Benno paid close attention to getting the details right, such as including a built-in elastic hook which makes the towels easy to hang. Launched in the UK in the summer of 2015, their range of brightly coloured

cabana towels proved an instant hit. Within 4 months of launching, Andy and Benno also took their ideas into the American and Australian markets. Their range now includes their quick dry beach towel in 6 vivid colours and two sizes (large and extra-large) and an active towel perfect for travelling, sports, going to the gym or yoga. New this summer is the world’s first round microfibre towel, great for picnics and at the beach. All of their towels come in stylish bags for easy storage.

HELPFUL HINTS --------------------------------
MAXIMISING IMPULSE BUYS As we get nearer to Christmas, the foot traffic in most retail stores increases. And so does the opportunity for impulse buys. Owning a bricks and mortar store means you’re in luck - studies have shown that shoppers are far more likely to make impulse buys in store than they are online. To maximise the impulse sales you get, you need to make sure you are considering these important factors. --------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
POSITIONING
Place impulse buys near the areas where customers frequent the most. You have two options here – place impulse buys at the checkout area or place them near your bestselling range. Counter displays are great for attracting people’s attention at their point of purchase.
16
--------------------------------
SEEING IS BUYING
-------------------------------It goes without saying that the better displayed a product is, the more you will sell.
SIMPLE PRODUCTS Impulse buys need to be easy to come to grips with – both literally and figuratively. Your customers should immediately be able to understand what the product is and its benefits. For example, Ledlenser keyring lights sell well as an impulse buy because everyone knows what a torch is and the benefits a light on your keyring provides.
Use eye catching signs to attract your customer’s attention. Or else make sure the product is bright and interesting. We’ve had lots of feedback about Picquic’s counter tub of Teeny Turners being successful as an impulse buy because of the vibrant colours.
>
WWW.TIGHTLINES.CO.NZ
ISSUE 02 - NOVEMBER 2016
SMALL & INEXPENSIVE
The physical size of an impulse buy is extremely relevant, as anything big and bulky is likely to deter your customers. Price is another key factor, with people more likely to buy cheap items on impulse. Our range of Munkee keyring products are a successful impulse buy product because they fulfil both these criteria, with the majority of the range having a price point of under $12 and all products being small enough to fit on your keyring.
44%
Shoppers who go to the store in a car instead of by foot are more likely to make an unplanned purchase.
88%
of all impulse purchases are made because an item is on sale.
Households of young, unmarried adults with higher incomes do more unplanned buying than older, married households

SUNDAY AFTERNOONS GENERAL MANAGER NIKKI GOODALL’S FRUSTRATION AT TRYING TO FIND HER DAUGHTER A GOOD QUALITY HAT LED TO TIGHT LINES BECOMING THE DISTRIBUTOR OF SUNDAY AFTERNOONS TECHNICAL HEADWEAR
18
As any New Zealander knows, our summer sun can be brutal. And any parent knows the frustration of trying to convince their child to wear a hat that they don’t like.
When a business contact mentioned to her that American brand Sunday Afternoons was looking to bring their product to New Zealand, Nikki was immediately interested. “I knew from my own experience that there was a gap in the New Zealand market for high quality hats. As soon as I saw the Sunday Afternoons range, I was blown away by the design, the technical features and benefits of their hats.” Sunday Afternoons hats are designed to be as lightweight and breathable as possible. They stand apart from the rest with their incredible range of technical features, including folding brim technology, anchor-lock sizing system, flow through ventilation system and sunglass securing system.
Nikki Goodall, Tight Lines’ General Manager spent a fruitless day trying to find a sun hat to protect her ten year old daughter Ashleigh. “I did the rounds of the all the local shops trying to find a tidy hat that we both liked. She wanted a straw hat that looked good, where I was concerned about the sun protection factor. The only straw hats I found were flimsy with large gaps in them, that didn’t provide the protection I wanted.”

ISSUE 02 - NOVEMBER 2016
“We are always looking for more quality brands to offer our customers. Sun protection is a big issue for Kiwis. Two big selling points are that all Sunday Afternoons hats carry a minimum sun protection rating of UPF 50+ and they are approved by the Melanoma International Foundation. “In addition, Sunday Afternoons echoes our own company philosophy – a family run company with emphasis on quality products and service.” To see the full range available in New Zealand, please visit our website.

The products are German designed and manufactured in their own Vietnamese factory, Mountech Co. Ltd. This makes them unique in the outdoor industry as most other brands outsource manufacturing. Having their own factory gives Tatonka the opportunity to control the quality of their products and the production conditions onsite. Every product is individually checked before it is sent out. Tatonka believe in ethical manufacturing – they operate an ‘Open Factory’ policy for their factory in Vietnam. They offer English speaking tours through the production site so people can see for themselves the conditions in which Tatonka products are made. Tatonka offer a wide range of products (over 200 in total), encompassing backpacks, outdoor accessories, and travel products. Tatonka also manufacture a brand called Tasmanian Tiger, which was designed for the German military.

To help you fit Tatonka packs, each adjustable harness system has a Tatonka icon marked on it. This icon is marked at the same height from the bottom of the pack (400mm), regardless of the type of pack. Once you have fitted your customer to one pack, this icon enables you to adjust the fit of another pack easily, by simply counting the amount of ‘ladder rungs’ you need to move up or down from the icon. The biggest selling product, the Barrel Bags, have some great advantages over the main competitors: they have padded bottoms and the shoulder straps take seconds to attach. Tatonka are one of the only outdoor companies to use Cryptalloy foil in their RFID products. AceCamp produces an affordable liner in both envelope and mummy shapes, while Coghlan’s range include a premium Sleeping Bag Liner that keeps sleeping bags warmer and drier by wicking moisture away.
We’ve always found Leatherman tools a must-have for all those jobs around the camp. If your customers are planning on going backcountry, we recommend the recently released Leatherman Signal, a 19 toolsin-one piece of genius that incorporates features like a fire starting rod and emergency whistle. For campers who can’t handle a holiday without technology, make sure you show them Powertraveller’s portable solar chargers, which lets them keep their gadgets charged no matter where in the back blocks they are. And don’t forget to make sure your customers are prepared for when Mother Nature misbehaves. Rainbird Stowaway jackets are a fabulous option as they are a fully lined jacket yet pack down into a small, take anywhere package. For more temporary protection from the elements there is AceCamp’s emergency poncho or there are a range of ponchos available from Coghlan’s, including one specifically designed for kids (so they don’t have any excuse to sit in the car while the adults are packing up the tent in the rain). ENLIGHTEN US COMPETITION
We had some great entries for our Ledlenser enlighten us competition. From hunting, fishing, farming, caving, tramping to night astronomy and travel adventures, Ledlenser torches and headlamps light the way for so many kiwis. here are some of our favourite stories...
African Nights – Louise McNutt 24
I had been in Africa for 3 months when I was reassigned to a new camp. My task - to train a group of new recruits. Recruits that would join the existing teams of rangers to patrol the area, monitoring the whereabouts of the last few remaining black rhino. All in an effort to protect them from the very real threat of poachers. After a day of training I walked to my tent to the sound of the recruit ranger’s upbeat and beautiful chant on the still night air. I unzipped my tent and sank gratefully down on my sleeping bag. It had been another full on day of training and I lay there reflecting on my new group of students. A cool breeze stirred the tent fly causing it to tremble and then in the distance a hyena called. I closed my eyes and drifted off, listening to their lullaby. I woke with a start, bolt upright in my sleeping bag something had jerked me from my sleep. Crunch…crunch…crunch… footsteps moving across gravel. The

sound growing louder and louder as it approached my tent. Then nothing…silence. A sudden heavy breathing made the fabric on my tent tremor. I nearly jumped in fright. What was outside my tent? I

turned the power up at the back and the focus to a beam. We all froze in our tracks as 100m away there was 3 fallow deer standing there. Tim took a knee and fired a shot and one deer dropped on the spot. His first deer with his new rifle!
A few years ago we were at my friend’s farm down south for his 21st. The night before his party we went out for a possum shoot with the .22s. We also took his new 7mm08 he got for his birthday the day before just in case we saw a goat. After shooting a lot of possums we started heading back to the house. We were all walking and talking loud as and spotted 3 sets of eyes on the fence line. “How about a couple more possums?” we said. Walking and talking towards the glowing eyes we noticed the eyes starting to move around quickly. We all agreed that’s strange for a possum. I reached to my head torch (a Ledlenser H7R) and
After a lot of char hoos and screaming, we carried it back to the house and put the deer on the spit next to the lamb the next day. Bloody beautiful! What a night it was. Honestly, without my Ledlenser we would have kept walking and talking and probably spooked the deer. The other bigger hand held torches we had did not have the range of the Ledlenser. Awesome piece of kit - never not in my pack or bum bag.
I woke with a start, bolt upright in my sleeping bag - something had jerked me from my sleep
to sit still, knowing that any movement would only startle it and increase the risk of being stood on. All I could do was wait, careful not to make a sound. I have never been this frightened in all my life! I don’t know how long it stood towering over me in the darkness; reality was that it was probably no more than 15 minutes, but it felt like hours.
I sat there frozen listening to it browse on the trees, then slowly move further and further away. I waited until I was convinced it had moved far enough away not to get startled at my appearance. Then fumbling around in the dark I located my Ledlenser SEO7R head lamp and carefully unzipped the tent. Crawling quietly onto the gravel, I was engulfed in darkness, but the sound of tree branches moving gave away the direction of the culprit. Headlamp in hand I quickly flashed it in that direction. Two eyes glow brightly back at me.
25
I swung my beam wide, catching the outline of a neck... A very long neck, that flowed down to four very long spindly legs. I found myself staring at a giraffe!

HOW IT WORKS
NIKWAX Using aftercare products like Nikwax helps your gear perform at its best for longer, keeping you warm, dry and comfortable and saving you money.
When DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is functioning properly, it prevents water from entering but still allows water vapour (eg sweat) to escape. When dirt or other contaminants degrade DWR, the fabric soaks up water, reducing breathability so water vapour can’t escape. This causes people to get wet from the inside.

How Nikwax Works
>
•
Nikwax waterproofing products contain an elastomer polymer called TX.10i which was designed and patented by Nick Brown (hence the name Nikwax!).
•
The polymer wraps around individual fibres in garments and forms a flexible lattice when it dries.
•
Because it wraps around individual fibres, it allows garments to breathe whilst making water form into beads and roll off.
•
This TX.10i polymer was the primary active ingredient in all Nikwax footwear and fabric treatments.
•
Unlike fluorocarbon products, you do not need to heat the garment to activate the waterproofing treatment.

OUTDOOR GAMES FOR
Get outside & have fun this summer with Ogo Disks & Speedminton
SUMMER This summer, make sure your customers are aware of two exciting games that will provide hours of entertainment for the whole family
OgoDisks are one of our most fun products. The concept is so simple yet so ingenious – a hand trampoline that can be used to throw, catch and bounce. OgoDisks can be played with individually, in pairs or in groups and is a great way to develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination, especially for kids.
>
Because they are ultra-lightweight, they also make a great throwing disk. And they float, which makes them great for the beach or the pool. For extra fun, we recommend trying water balloons with them. Each set comes with two Ogo disks and one Ogosoft ball. The ball is great – it is so soft that OgoDisks can be played with indoors! Plus the ball hitting the mat makes no sound so playing with OgoDisks is amazingly quiet (we can’t guarantee there won’t be lots of shrieks and laughter though, as playing with OgoDisks is so much fun.)
What we love most about OgoDisks Great for developing motor skills and hand-eye coordination for kids OgoDisks float, so they are great in the pool. As added fun, water balloons can be used with them Use as a hand trampoline or throwing disk – your choice! Fun for all ages
Key selling tip We’ve had lots of customers report great success selling OgoDisks by having a sample for people to try and someone in store demonstrating. We know from our own experience that it can quickly become addictive!

Speedminton is another awesome way to get families off the couch and being active this summer. It is designed to combine the best of tennis, badminton and squash. The best things about it are it requires no nets, takes only minutes to set up and you can adapt the court to suit the space available. Perfect for playing at the campsite, beach, river or park this summer!
>
29
The concept of Speedminton is based around a speeder, which looks like a badminton shuttle but has been modified in one key way – it can withstand moderate winds. If you’ve ever had the frustration of trying to play badminton with a normal shuttle outdoors, you’ll appreciate what an advancement this is. Speedminton is currently being played in lots of schools around the country, as it’s an awesome introduction to racquet sports. There are 4 different sets available that are distinguished by the quality of the racquets, with the top-of-range S900 set featuring carbon-composite racquets that will impress all racquet sport fanatics. The entry level Fun Set with an RRP of $89.99 makes a great Christmas present.
What we love most about Speedminton Play anywhere with minimal set-up Easy for anyone to pick up, even kids
Key selling tip Anyone who likes racquet sports is a potential Speedminton convert. It is a great way for racquet sport enthusiasts to keep up their skill level over summer, and provides fun for the whole family.

FAQS
LEATHERMAN WARRANTY SERVICE What does the Leatherman 25 year warranty cover?
What advice should I give customers on how to look
Leatherman's warranty covers only the original primary owner and does not cover abuse, alteration, theft, loss, or unauthorised and/or unreasonable use of a Leatherman product. This warranty does not cover sheaths, accessories, imprinting, colour finishes, cleaning, or sharpening.
after their new Leatherman Multi-tool?
Tight Lines Ltd will replace any faulty tool with a factory fully-refurbished tool. This service ensures a quick turn around. Replacement sheaths can be purchased separately. Can I replace the product in store? No, you can’t sorry. We need the product back in order to do an assessment. 36
What if the returned tool needs to be replaced but the model is no longer available? We will replace the returned tool with an equivalent model. What happens if I return an older model that is special to the customer? We can repair some items. Special sentimental or engraved tools can be sent back to the factory in Oregon USA for repair. This service takes approximately 3 months and incurs a freight cost. This can be discussed after the tool has been assessed.
>
WWW.TIGHTLINES.CO.NZ
ISSUE 02 - NOVEMBER 2016
In order to receive the best performance from a Leatherman tool in years to come and to prevent any rust or corrosion, periodically clean the tool with CRC or a similar product, then rub with a soft cloth. This is especially important when a tool is exposed to moisture and marine environments. The steel used in the construction of Leatherman tools is high grade stainless steel which is rust resistant, but not totally rust proof. Corrosion can occur in the absence of proper maintenance. Does engraving a Leatherman Multi-tool void the warranty? Engraving a multi-tool will not affect Leatherman’s 25 year warranty, but if the tool does need to be replaced under the warranty in the future, the engraving will not be redone as part of the warranty process. Who covers the cost of freight on warranty items? It is yours (or your customer’s) responsibility to get the product back to us. Assuming the product is under warranty and the fault is covered by warranty, we will send the repaired or replacement item back with no freight charge.
