A NOTE FROM
NIKKI >
Well, another 6 months has flown by. We’ve been very busy here, with some significant new products (in particular the Ledlenser MH11 headlamp and the Tatonka Stealth packs) and some staff changes. We were very sad to say goodbye to Ben Staessens, our northern sales rep at the end of March. However, we’re happy that his recommendation, Scott Taylor, has joined the team. In just a few short weeks we will be celebrating 35 years of the incorporation of Tight Lines Ltd. As a family-run business, we are very proud of this achievement. The same principles that Peter Toynbee (my father!) started the company with still apply today – quality products and superior service. Keep an eye out for our specials, free products and
Roses chocolates with every order during May. Just a couple of months later we will begin our Domex 40th birthday celebrations. We are very proud to have taken over this iconic NZ brand and believe we have given it a recent resurgence with the introduction of the Halo series. See page 14 for more information on the Domex journey. I hope you enjoy reading this issue – after all, we create this for you, our retailers, to help you learn more about our company and our brands. As always, if there is anything we can do better, we would love to know.

news bites TIGHT LINES CELEBRATES OUR 35-YEAR ANNIVERSARY
This year Tight Lines is celebrating 35 years since Tight Lines first began. In 1984, Peter Toynbee started Tight Lines Ltd from a spare bedroom in Waipukurau, Hawkes Bay. A keen fly fisherman, Peter had always wanted to work for himself. The going was tough initially as Peter tried to juggle a full-time teaching job, a young family and a growing business.
8
Although Tight Lines initially started selling purely fly fishing products, it quickly expanded to include outdoor products. In 2014 we sold
Toynbee family in 1984
off the fishing side of the business to concentrate on the potential of our leading brands in the outdoor industry including Ledlenser, Leatherman, Tatonka and Domex. Peter may now be stepping back from the business, leaving his daughter Nikki in charge, but the
principles he founded the business on still remain true today—quick delivery of quality products. Watch out for some specials heading your way as we celebrate 35 years in business.
NEW PACKAGING MAKES DEXSHELL PRODUCTS AN EASIER SELL DexShell recently changed their packaging and we know you’ll love the results – the packaging is now eye-catching, lets your customer see the product clearly and even enables your customers to try the products on without damaging the packaging. A win all around! The packaging also clearly lists the features of the product and explains the unique technology of DexShell's patented porelle membrane – the secret to why DexShell products are 100% waterproof yet still highly breathable. Hopefully this new packaging will make selling DexShell waterproof products even easier!

simple for the user,” says Neil Sutherland, Tight Lines sales rep. “The Ledlenser connect app is really user-friendly and allows you to set up what light options you want to access.” While you can easily use the headlamp in the standard default mode it comes in, the whole idea of the 'Ledlenser connect' app is your phone can connect via bluetooth with the headlamp so you can decide what light settings you want to be easily available. You can choose to set your headlamp up with light requirements you need for your trip. For instance, if you want the first press of the button to give you 100% full power, the second to give 50% power and the third to give red light, you can program your headlamp to do exactly that.

With 1000 lumens of power and a 320 metre beam range, it blows the specs of most other headlamps out of the water. It has Ledlenser’s Advanced Focus System and Smart Light Technology, and also offers red, blue and green light options.

Happy Birthday Domex! THE ICONIC NEW ZEALAND SLEEPING BAG TURNS 40 In 1979, New Zealand’s population stood at a mere 3.1 million, the mighty Commodore was the car of choice and New Zealanders were first introduced to Domex sleeping bags
14
Based on Auckland’s North Shore, Domex’s philosophy right from the start was simple - ‘produce a top quality product that the customer wants and will recommend to others’. A lot has changed over the past 40 years, including Tight Lines Ltd buying the brand in 2012, but the basic philosophy still remains the same. Domex remains proudly kiwi owned and we still take pride in producing sleeping bags designed by New Zealanders for New Zealand conditions.
Designed by kiwis to suit NZ conditions In the beginning, Domex realised that New Zealand’s unique climate requires a diverse range of sleeping bags to meet many conditions. After all, there are not many countries where in the course of one day, you can experience warm, sub–tropical weather, while not far away there are sub–zero conditions in alpine areas. Among Domex’s achievements, they were instrumental in the evolution of synthetic fibre in sleeping bags, and registered trademarks on two fibres: Spiro Loft ™ – a 7 denier hollow fibre
>
WWW.TIGHTLINES.CO.NZ
and Microcel 3D™ – a non– allergenic micro fibre. Domex’s aim in developing these fibres was to develop synthetic sleeping bags that rivalled down bags in the areas of weight and volume but would still give reasonable levels of insulation when wet – an area where down bags traditionally struggle.
Changing times For many years, Domex sleeping bags were proudly kiwi-made. Domex was one of the last sleeping bag manufacturers still operating in New Zealand, but in May 2007, the decision was made that in order to keep Domex prices
ISSUE 07 -APRIL 2019
BEHIND THE LINES MAGAZINE competitive, production needed to move offshore. Thanks to leading edge technology, ongoing research and high standards of quality control, Domex still maintained its reputation as a quality brand producing quality products.
New direction for the brand Another major change happened in 2012, when Tight Lines acquired the Domex brand. “We wanted to add high quality sleeping bags to our range of outdoor products for some time but the overseas brands we looked at did not cover the full range of New Zealand conditions” says Nikki Goodall, General Manager of Tight Lines.
“When we bought the Domex brand, one of the key things we wanted to do was continue to innovate and move the Domex brand with the times.” A key part of developing new products was establishing brand partnerships with key influencers in the outdoor industry and developing new products with them. An example of this is the Halo series which was developed in partnership with Greg and Willie Duley from New Zealand Hunter Adventures. “It’s almost come full circle – in the early days Domex focused on trying to build a synthetic bag that had the lightweight properties of down but the benefit of synthetic fibres that still performed when wet.
“We were thrilled when the Domex brand became available, because we knew that Domex have sleeping bags that are designed specifically to cover the full spectrum of New Zealand conditions.”
“Now the flagship Domex sleeping bags are the Halo down bags that incorporate Nikwax hydrophobic down, which gives them the key benefits of a synthetic bag by retaining warmth even when the bag is damp.”
Halo series and Beyond
“We’ve solved the problem Domex initially tried to solve in a completely different way, an example of the kiwi ingenuity that has always been at the heart of the Domex brand. And we hope always will be."
We’re proud to say that after 40 years, Domex is still producing bags designed by New Zealanders for NZ conditions

'Spot the Bison' FINALISTS & WINNER We had an incredible response to our 'Spot the Bison' competition, with over 100 entries. It was extremely hard to narrow it down to our finalists... which meant that some awesome photos did miss out. All of our finalists won a Tatonka 22
Stausack (dry bag), except our winner Jason Crane who won $1,000 cash. Jason's photo perfectly represented the 'Bison in the wild' theme of the competition, and took us to the time and place. Don't forget to follow our Tatonka facebook page, www.facebook.com/TatonkaNZ
The story behind the photo: "Took the Mrs up for her first hunt out the back of Molesworth up MT Mcabe for the night. The wind picked up and ended up blowing us both off the mountain, chasing after all of our gear and tent... needless to say, not sure I'll get her out again. Not to mention both running into a beehive and being chased out of the bush!"

Tatonka Stealth Packs NEW SOFT FABRIC HUNTING DAYPACKS FROM TATONKA We are excited to introduce a game changer - our new soft fabric daypacks, The Tatonka Stealth Series! Over the past nine years, Tatonka’s reputation for quality packs has grown until it has become the pack of choice for kiwi hunters. Many New Zealand hunters have put the Bison, Tatonka’s flagship pack, to the test, and it has come through with flying colours. Tatonka are now the pack of choice for both New Zealand Hunter
Adventures and The Red Stag Hunters Club TV shows. As the quality of Tatonka has become more widely known, we have had lots of hunters ask us if Tatonka could produce a hunting-specific backpack with quiet fabric. So we teamed up with Tatonka’s pack design team in Germany to create the ultimate daypacks for New Zealand hunters.

Top tips for Maintaining your Gear When you’re selling your customers product, you want to make sure they know how to look after it properly. There are two reasons for this. 1. Happier customer
28
2. Reduced warranty returns as the customer understands what to do to maintain their gear Here are some of our top tips for maintaining gear.
WET WEATHER GEAR This generally has the highest rate of returns with people complaining their garment is not waterproof. Normally, leaking garments are due to the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating needing to be cleaned or replenished. Your customer needs to be aware that dirt, blood and body oils interfere with the functioning of the DWR and therefore cleaning regularly is an important part of maintaining the waterproof layer. However, normal detergents can interfere with the functioning of DWR, so it’s important to use a specialist cleaner like Nikwax Tech Wash. >
WWW.TIGHTLINES.CO.NZ
ISSUE 07 -APRIL 2019
After 3 – 4 washes, your customer’s garment might reach the stage where it needs to be re-treated with water repellency (DWR) by using Nikwax TX-Direct. Both a wash-in and spray-on version are available and must be applied when the garment is still wet after washing. If your customer has used Nikwax, there is no need for them to tumble dry their garment to activate the waterproofing.
FOOTWEAR Like with clothing, footwear is not idiot-proof. This means you occasionally get customers returning gear that hasn’t been maintained properly, expecting it to be replaced under warranty. To avoid this situation, make sure your customer knows how to care for their footwear before they leave your store. This is also your chance to get a great addon sale! Like with clothing, the footwear needs to be cleaned properly and have the waterproofing replenished at the end of every trip. For convenience, Nikwax’s range of footwear waterproofers are designed to be used directly after cleaning

A sleeping bag liner lengthens time between washes and is another great add-on sale when selling a sleeping bag. Domex has two sleeping bag liners available – polyester (w/s $16.30) and silk (w/s $54.30). Your customer will eventually need to wash their sleeping bag. Here, it is important to use a specialized cleaning product like Nikwax Down Wash for down bags and Nikwax Tech Wash for synthetic bags. Be careful to follow the sleeping bag manufacturers care instructions otherwise damage can occur.
>
NIKWAX WATERPROOFING – Use straight after cleaning when gear is wet!
It is important to remind your customer that Nikwax is designed to be used on wet gear that has just been cleaned (except for Nikwax Waterproof Wax for Leather which can be used on wet or
when footwear is wet, saving your customer lots of time as the cleaning and proofing process can be done together (exception is Nikwax wax which can be used on wet or dry boots).
SLEEPING BAGS With sleeping bags, the most important tip to give your customer to lengthen the life of their product is to store it properly. This means removing it from its cram sac and storing it loosely. Most Domex sleeping bags are supplied with a mesh sac for storage, and mesh sacs can also be purchased separately ($3.80 each w/s).
TENTS
dry footwear).
When it comes to protecting tents against sun damage, the best defense is offence. Applying a product with a solar protector such as Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof or Solarwash when the tent is brand new can double the effective life of the fabric. Keeping your tent clean is also important to prolong its life - for this use Nikwax Tent & Gear Solarwash, and reproof when necessary with Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof.

DESIGN-A-LEATHERMAN COMPETITION As part of the anniversary activities, one of our objectives was to introduce the Leatherman brand to a younger generation. We launched a “Design a Leatherman” competition for New Zealand students in Years 5-13, where they got to design a Leatherman featuring all the gadgets they needed in their life. We had over 150 entries from students throughout the country. Tim presented awards to our high school winners at the events in Auckland and Christchurch, and visited Greenmeadows School in Napier to present Design a Leatherman prizes to our winning Primary School student. We had such a positive response to this competition we are planning to run it again this year, so watch out for more information.
34
UNSCRIPTED MOMENTS It was an honour for us to spend time with Tim and witness the genuine, authentic connections he made with New Zealanders who support the brand. Some of the best moments were unscripted, including his encounter with a group of bikers at a Wairoa petrol station using a Leatherman tool to make a repair. He had to show his driver's license to convince them he was the actual inventor of the Leatherman multi-tool!
THANK YOU Thank you to everyone who attended our events and helped to make Tim and Chau’s visit to New Zealand such a success. We really appreciate the support. Bring on Leatherman’s 40 year anniversary! >
