A NOTE FROM

NIKKI I know I say this often, but I can’t believe that we are now at the tail end of the year. The last six months have been extremely busy here at Tight Lines. We’ve introduced two new brands with OverBoard and HydraPak - both of which have had great initial reactions and reviews, and now that the warmer weather is upon us they will no doubt be added to gear lists all over the country.

>

The Domex Halo sleeping bag that Greg Duley helped us create has had great success over the winter - so much so that we could not keep up with the demand. We have taken inspiration from this success and added to the range, with the

Halo Plus coming soon. Check out page 7 for more information. Ledlenser’s new products are also causing a stir at the moment with the introduction of some of their best headlamps yet. See page 10 for more information. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of Behind the Lines, the magazine we create for you, to help you learn more about the brands we proudly represent in New Zealand. As always, if you have any suggestions or comments we would love to hear them. Enjoy the warmer weather!

An even brighter future LEDLENSER HAVE EXPANDED THEIR OUTDOOR SERIES RANGE WITH THREE EXCITING NEW HEADLAMPS. 10

We’re always a bit in awe of Ledlenser’s design team in Germany and how they continue to raise the bar higher with every release of new products. They’ve outdone themselves with the new MH4, MH5 and MH8, which we believe set a new benchmark in lightweight, user-friendly and affordable headlamps. AA BATTERY MAGIC

MH4 HEADLAMP

One of the great things about these new headlamps is they all run on AA batteries (even the rechargeable models have this option), which is a big plus for anyone who has a GPS unit that runs on AA batteries and wants to consolidate battery sizes.

One of the key selling points of the MH4 is that it is simple to operate (the word idiot-proof was bandied about by staff here, but no one who buys a Ledlenser is an idiot anyway). It has a high and low power setting, runs on a single AA battery and features Ledlenser’s patented Advanced Focus System for a seamless transition from a

DETACHABLE LAMP HEADS Another great feature Ledlenser has incorporated into these headlamps is the innovative mounting system. This enables the lamp head to be easily detached and used as a handheld light or fastened to other gear, adding to the versatility of the headlamps. >

broad floodlight to a long-distance focused beam. Producing 200 lumens of light with a beam distance of 130 metres, weighing only 92 grams and with an RRP of $79.99, it offers far more bang for your buck than other headlamps at this price point.

BEHIND THE LINES MAGAZINE

>

MH8 HEADLAMP

MH5 HEADLAMP A rechargeable version of the MH4, the MH5 pumps out an incredible 400 lumens with a beam range of 180 metres. “This headlamp is outstanding. It’s the perfect companion in the bush – lightweight, bright and with dual power so you can run it on AA batteries if you want. The size means it can easily fit in the pocket of a jacket. With an RRP of $99.99, this headlamp will be a game changer,” says Ben Staessens, Tight Lines account manager.

The top spec model of the new headlamps, the MH8 takes versatility to a new level, with your customer being able to choose between five different light options, two energy modes, and they can choose to use the rechargeable Li-ion battery (which powers the impressive 600 lumens of light) or run the headlamp on two standard AA batteries. It also has a second LED which can be switched between a red, blue or green light. The MH8 has an RRP of $199.99.

11

“This would be my choice for someone who requires a highpowered headlamp. It’s incredibly versatile and the colour LED options gives people lots of options. The magnetic USB cable makes recharging the headlamp a breeze,” says Neil Sutherland, Tight Lines account manager.

CONCLUSION By continually developing their technology and designing new models of headlamps, Ledlenser has ensured they have a suitable headlamp for everyone, no matter what the target use or price point. And while it’s hard to pick favourites among the range, we believe the combination of brightness, user-friendliness and affordability makes the new MH4, MH5 and MH8 headlamps hard to beat.

Leatherman 35th anniversary world heritage tour Celebrating 35 years of the iconic Leatherman multi-tool This year, Leatherman are celebrating their 35th anniversary with a Global Heritage Tour that will see founder Tim Leatherman visit nine countries around the world. Toronto was the first stop on the tour followed by London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. The next stop is Seoul in October and the tour will end with visits to New Zealand and Australia in November. The goal? To celebrate this historic milestone with partners and fans who have helped make the brand what it is today.

16

We are excited to be hosting two Heritage events in New Zealand. The first in Auckland at MOTAT, the Museum of Transport and Technology, and the second in Christchurch at the Tait Technology Centre. Both venues have been selected to align with the overall theme of the tour which is to share Tim’s story of resilience and determination in developing the multi-tool product.

These events are an opportunity for Tim to personally meet and greet guests and share the story of how a road trip to Europe carved out his destiny. Each event will include a screening of the film ‘Made of Mettle”, a short documentary that follows the journey of Tim Leatherman when he first came up with the idea, as he says, “to put a pair of pliers into a pocket knife”.

“I WAS CARRYING A SCOUT KNIFE AND USED IT FOR EVERYTHING FROM SLICING BREAD TO FIXING THE CAR. BUT I KEPT WISHING I HAD A PAIR OF PLIERS!”

Design a Leatherman COMPETITION A COMPETITION TO CHALLENGE YOUNG NEW ZEALANDERS TO IMAGINE, CREATE AND THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

18

As part of the anniversary activities, one of our objectives was to introduce the Leatherman brand to a younger generation. In August we launched the “Design a Leatherman” competition for New Zealand students in Years 5-13. We challenged them to design a Leatherman tool featuring all the gadgets they think they need in their life. There were some great prizes up for grabs, including cash and the chance to meet Tim Leatherman himself! We shared this competition with schools across the country and had some great feedback from students and teachers alike. The competition was heavily promoted on social media by us and our PR company and shared by a number of our partners including NZ Hunter and NZ Outdoor Hunting magazine. We estimate these channels have a combined following of 53,000! We feel this promotion helped to extend our reach to new customers and markets. We received over 150 entries from students throughout the country and based on the positive response we are now planning to run this competition every year. The finalists' entries have been sent to Tim Leatherman to judge.

RAVE REVIEWS

HydraPak 20 STOW

FULL FORCE

“I absolutely rate the Stow bottle for not just hunting and hiking but any outdoor activities that require a drink. I will use the bottle for many things whether it be walking, biking, motocross riding or heading up the mountain in the winter. I will gladly take this bottle in for long bush stays as it was a dream to pack and carry.”

“The Full Force 2L reservoir is a hydration system equipped with an amazing (and ingeniously engineered) squeeze bulb that can literally hose water out at an incredible pressure, whether it’s to douse yourself to cool off after a long hike to your fishing possie, cleaning mud and gunk off your gear or sand out of your reel, or even giving the dog a drink when away from a water source.

– Desiree Parker-Munn, NZ Outdoor Hunting magazine

STASH “This is a super smart idea for those going ultra-light backcountry these days, with the Stash bottle 50% lighter than a comparable hard bottle. It’s also awesome for hunters who want stealth on their side while stalking – you can squeeze air out of it when partly full to stop any sloshing sound, and the flexible but durable construction will prevent it making a racket in your pack too!” – Hamish Carnachan, Fish & Game magazine

Also impressive was the battery life’s cold resistance. On a snowy freezing Otago trip earlier this year, I had my phone and the bank in the tent with me that night. My iPhone went from 97% to 18% overnight, yet the powerbank didn’t lose any more than 25% - there are four LED’s to indicate charge and they were all still glowing in the morning!”

“I think the real test of the lantern is the effectiveness of the lightweight Lithium battery and how efficient the solar panels are at charging it.

– Luke Care, NZ Hunter magazine

“On a lower power setting you will easily get three days or more. With a little bit of solar recharging each day you can easily increase the lanterns use for a week or more. The ability to charge your phone or other devices via the battery is also a fantastic feature.

21

“Overall this is a great product that is the perfect addition to the hunter’s equipment, family camping gear or just as a back up to have in your vehicle.” – Dave Benfell, Rod & Rifle editor

TATONKA GAITERS “Overall, the Tatonka gaiters are sturdy, well-made and a great item for most general hunting and outdoor uses. The rear zipper provides a clean, effective frontline and the rubber stirrup also provides a good compromise between toughness and protection of the boot sole.” – Dave Benfell, Rod & Rifle editor

my favourite product

stowaway By Jackie Rutherford Let’s face it, we live in a country with unpredictable weather. I remember heading out on a walk with my kids (who were four and six at the time) in bright sunshine, and an hour later when we made it back to the car we were being pelted by hail. The changeable nature of New Zealand weather is the reason why one of my favourite products is Rainbird’s Stowaway jacket. It’s based around the concept that you never know when it might rain, so you need a jacket that packs down small and is easy to take with you anywhere.

32

>

One of the things I love most about the Stowaway is how well it fits. The packaway raincoat I had prior to my Stowaway didn’t fit properly around my shoulders, so was annoying when I tried to do anything that required movement in the shoulders, like swing a golf club or go for a run. The Stowaway on the other hand, is designed with a seam that goes from the collar to the armpit, increasing the room in the shoulders compared to most other jackets.

The Stowaway is invaluable when it comes to keeping my kids dry. Because it packs down so small, you can stick it in their bag if there is a chance it might rain, but there is still lots of room for everything else they need to take to school. There’s a reason why NZ iconic band Crowded House sang about Four Seasons in One Day. But luckily with

ISSUE 06 - OCTOBER 2018

the Stowaway jacket available, there is no excuse for not being prepared for those unexpected downpours.

Helping to keep NZ be and plastic free Klean Kanteen has partnered with iconic organisation Keep New Zealand Beautiful to promote alternatives to singleuse plastic bottles.

34

In 2004, there was limited awareness about the health and environmental issues linked to plastic use, but this did not stop Klean Kanteen founder, Robert Seals, from taking action. With the aim of displacing toxic plastic and single-use plastic pollution, he introduced the first stainless steel, BPA-free, reusable water bottle. Since the founding of Klean Kanteen, practicing what they preach has been an important part of their business, donating over $2 million to environmental causes as a Certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the planet. “As the New Zealand distributor of Klean Kanteen, we wanted to partner with a local environmental >

organisation to help promote Klean Kanteen’s principles in New Zealand,” says Nikki Goodall, General Manager of Tight Lines. “We looked at a number of environmental organisations before deciding that Keep New Zealand Beautiful was the right fit for the brand. “Our first step was to become a member of Keep New Zealand Beautiful – something we urge other businesses to consider.”

Message on a sticker As part of the partnership, Tight Lines began working with Keep New Zealand Beautiful to design a sticker to go on all Klean Kanteen products

that incorporated their iconic logo with a message about reducing single-use plastics. “We are really happy with our final design, which you should see on all of our Klean Kanteen drink bottles in the future. “Hopefully seeing these stickers will remind customers of the importance of having a drink bottle like Klean Kanteen to reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottles going into landfills or ending up in our oceans.”

autiful ABOUT KEEP NEW ZEALAND BEAUTIFUL Keep NZ Beautiful is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to keeping our communities clean, safe and beautiful. Their campaigns ‘Be A Tidy Kiwi’ and ‘Do the Right Thing’ have been part of New Zealand culture for nearly 50 years. Keep NZ Beautiful’s rainbow logo is as recognisably Kiwi as L&P and jandals, and still proudly worn on Mr Vintage t-shirts today.

The Beautiful Awards

In 1967, the New Zealand Government established the Anti Litter Council, the organisation that is now known as Keep New Zealand Beautiful. They started out tackling litter, and that’s still a big part of what they do. Today, though, Keep NZ Beautiful’s work includes the removal and reduction of graffiti and waste minimisation and recycling initiatives. Their wider environmental projects include community events focused on beautification and clean-up, tree and garden planting plus waterways and highway restoration.

35

“Another Keep New Zealand Beautiful initiative we decided to support is their Beautiful Awards. These awards celebrate environmental excellence and recognise the efforts of communities and individuals in ensuring New Zealand remains a place we can all be proud of,” Nikki says. In 2018 Klean Kanteen is the naming rights sponsor for the Community Environmental Initiative Award, honouring innovative projects that have achieved extraordinary environmental results by harnessing the power of partnership. The finalists for this category are Plastic Bag Free Raglan, Timon Park Orchard Trust and Coast Care Bay of Plenty. The winner will be announced at the Keep NZ Beautiful awards gala dinner, held at the Maritime Museum in Auckland on Friday the 26th of October.

Keep NZ Beautiful also run sustainability education programmes designed to inspire the next generation of Kiwis. They provide comprehensive resources to support members and volunteers in their community efforts. Their annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards celebrate New Zealand’s best towns, cities and local heroes, who lead the way with their outstanding environmental and beautification work.

TECH TALK WATERPROOF & SUNPROOF TENTS

MAKING TENTS BOTH WATERPROOF AND SUNPROOF Ultraviolet (UV) light and dirt are the two most significant sources of damage for synthetic tents. UV light attacks the fabric, breaking down the chemical bonds in the fabric, reducing its strength. Just two weeks of UV exposure can lead to a 50% reduction in the tear strength of a tent’s fabric! 38

Dirt works against water repellency and results in the fabric absorbing water, which weakens the waterproof coating’s adhesion to the fabric, and makes the fabric vulnerable to mildew. Nikwax has come up with a solution to both problems with their Tent & Gear Solarwash. This product cleans and restores water repellency to tent fabrics, while also increasing the fabric’s resistance to UV light by 50%. It can be used up to three times to revitalise water repellency before the tent will need to be re-waterproofed using Nikwax Tent & Gear Solarproof.
