The Domex Story Domex sleeping bags are designed by New Zealanders for New Zealanders. They’ve been tried, tested and proven in New Zealand conditions for over thirty years. During that time, thousands of Domex sleeping bags have found their way into Kiwi homes. New Zealand’s diverse climate means that Kiwis need a range of sleeping bags suitable for anything from sub-tropical to below freezing temperatures and everything in between. New Zealanders come in all shapes and sizes so Domex also offers bags that cater for different physiques. All Domex sleeping bags are covered by a 5 year warranty.

Choosing the right bag Choosing the right sleeping bag for your needs is a big decision and there are some important factors that you need to consider. These include bag shape, zip configuration, fill, outer fabric, comfort rating and size.

Shape & Zips The shape of a sleeping bag influences how efficiently it retains heat. As a general rule, the closer fitting the sleeping bag, the warmer it is as there is less air space for your body to heat. Zips are important because they allow you to adjust the level of warmth that your bag provides. Some sleeping bags also have zip configurations that enable them to be used as a duvet or for two bags to be zipped together to create a double sleeping bag.

Warranty All Domex sleeping bags come with a comprehensive 5 year warranty.

Mummy box foot

Semi-rectangular Mummy style bags are the best design for maximising warmth. Their tapered shape reduces heat-loss and is intended for people who will be using their sleeping bags in very cold conditions. All Domex mummy bags feature a 3/4 length zip with a slider at each end. This means in warmer conditions the zip can be opened at each end to allow ventilation. Models: Halo, Mountaineer

The semi-rectangular shape is a favourite with many Kiwis who prefer to sacrifice the extra warmth of the mummy style for the comfort of more leg space. Coupled with Domex’s temperature-regulating twin zip system (allows you to open both the bottom and side of the bag), the semirectangular shape is the best solution for most Kiwis who use their sleeping bags in a wide range of conditions. Models: Black Ice, Packlite, Bushmate, Silver Fern Zero, Silver Fern 5 Below

Twin Zip System Domex’s twin zip system consists of two separate zips: one along the side of the bag and one along the bottom. Both zips work independently of each other. The long side zip has two sliders, giving maximum temperature control as you can create openings at the bottom and/or top end of the zip. The foot zip can also be opened separately. On the bags that have left and right side zip options available, two bags can be zipped together to make a double sleeping bag. Temperature control is still possible using the foot zips of each bag and various configurations of the long zips. Another advantage of the twin zip system is that the bag can be unzipped completely and used as a duvet.

Fill When choosing your sleeping bag you need to decide between down or synthetic fill. Both types have particular advantages, so you need to decide which option best fits your needs. Properties

Down (natural goose or duck down)

Synthetic (man-made fibres)

Warmth

Moulds to body to create best warmth - best heat retention per gram of weight

Good heat retention, but not as warm per gram of weight as down

Weight & compression

Lightweight and packs up smaller than synthetic

Slightly heavier and doesn’t compress as well as down

Wet weather ability

Effectiveness is impacted when wet and takes longer to dry

Keeps the user warm even when damp and is quick to dry

Lifespan

Lasts longer when looked after well

Less expensive but shorter lifespan

You can find information on Domex’s range of down sleeping bags on page 5 and information on the synthetic bags on page 9.

Fabric High quality fabrics are used in the construction of Domex sleeping bags. The fabrics are chosen to suit each particular model and a number are exclusive to Domex. LININGS Silktouch - A very high thread count, small denier thread means a silky feeling against your skin. The tight weave prevents down plumes from escaping. Silktouch is used for the lining of all Domex down bags. Comfort Temp - Soft, quick drying fabric that wicks moisture from the skin and maintains an even temperature year-round. Used for the lining on most synthetic bags. OUTER SHELL DX-Proof - Durable ripstop fabric with a water resistant, breathable finish.

Comfort Ratings Comfort ratings are the range of temperatures in which you will still be comfortable in your sleeping bag. They are not an exact science and there are many variables that will determine what your ‘comfort level’ is. These include: • what you’ve eaten that day • how warm you are when you get in the bag • the surface your sleeping bag is on • your metabolism • what the chill factor is • whether you use a sleeping bag liner • what clothes you are wearing when you’re sleeping Due to differences between people, the comfort temperature rating for each model of Domex sleeping bag is stated as a range. To assess which bag is best for ‘warm sleepers’ (those who get warm easily), take most notice of the lowest temperature. Alternatively people who are ‘cold sleepers’ (those who feel the cold more) should refer to the higher temperature to help decide which is the best sleeping bag for them.

Size We know that New Zealanders come in all shapes and sizes. To ensure comfort and warmth are never compromised, several Domex bags come in both standard and large sizes, with the Bushmate and Black Ice models also available in extra large.

Other Features Shoulder collars with velcro tabs A full 360o shoulder collar to prevent warm air escaping and cold air getting in. Hoods & drawcords The drawcord prevents air flow in and out of the bag while the hood shields your head from draughts and reduces heat loss. Zip guard Anti-snagging zip guard is sewn along each zip to ensure smooth, snag free running of the slider. It also reduces heat loss through the zip. Zips with locking sliders Durable zips fitted with autolock sliders stop your zip from opening unintentionally. Compression cram sac Allows you to make your sleeping bag as small as possible for easy carry. The hand hold at one end of the sac makes it easier to remove from your pack as well as the bag from the sac.

Down Sleeping Bags About Down Domex’s down sleeping bags use some of nature’s finest insulators - duck and goose down. The quality of the down is typically measured by ‘loft’, which describes how much air is trapped by the down. The higher the loft value the more trapped air and therefore the better the insulation property of the down fill. Another measurement to consider with down sleeping bags is the ratio of down to small feathers. For example, 90/10 = 90% down, 10% small feathers. The higher the percentage of down the greater the warmth provided by the fill. Both goose and duck down are high quality insulators but goose down is the superior fill because it lasts longer and is also available in a higher loft for maximum warmth.

Construction Along with the quality of the down, the arrangement of the down fill in the construction of the sleeping bag is also crucial. Down fill consists of individual pieces (down plume and feathers) that can move, therefore Domex sleeping bags are constructed with the right balance between providing space for the loft and still keeping the down in the correct position. This is achieved using a number of compartments (called baffles) to contain the down. The following type of construction is used in Domex down sleeping bags: Box Wall - a baffle wall is inserted between the outer fabric and the lining to ‘box’ the down into compartments. Each baffle wall is sewn independently to both the inner and outer retaining fabrics so that air cannot pass directly through the seam into the bag. Models: Mountaineer, Halo. About Synthetic Domex’s synthetic bags feature high-tech fibres exclusive to Domex that are designed to give you a warm, comfortable night’s sleep. Synthetic fibres 7DXcell - a blend of multi-denier hollow fibres exclusive to Domex which are very compactable and will keep you warm even if your sleeping bag gets damp. 7DXcell is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial, meaning the bag will retain freshness for its entire lifetime. Regular washing will help maintain the loft. Models: Silver Fern 5 Below, Silver Fern Zero, Black Ice, Packlite. Spiro-Loft - a polyester hollow fibre with a spring like shape which has more loft and is warmer than conventional hollow fibres. It is non-allergenic, fast drying and will retain loft, adding warmth and extending the life of your sleeping bag. Model: Bushmate.

Type of construction Double offset layers - this construction overcomes the problem of cold spots. Quilt lines are kept as far away from each other as possible, making it impossible for two quilt lines to be compressed together. This retains the airlock, loft and fill properties within each compartment of the bag. Models: Black Ice, Bushmate, Silver Fern 5 Below, Silver Fern Zero. Single layer - used in sleeping bags where weight rather than warmth is the main consideration. Model: Packlite. Please note: manufacturer’s specifications may be subject to change
