欢迎来到2022佛山潭洲陶瓷展 According to Chinese official data, the Chinese ceramic tile industry closed the year 2021 with a total number of 1,048 companies (45 less than in 2020) which manufactured 8,174 million sq.m, down 4.6% year on year. Exports continued to decrease for the sixth consecutive year to 601 million sq.m (-3.4% on 2020) generating revenues of 4.1 billion US Dollars (-0.7% on 2020). Beside these overall figures, there are some trends of the industry that deserve to be underlined, whose keywords are Product Innovation and Quality, Production and Energy Efficiency, Sustainability. The Chinese tile industry continues to invest in capacity expansion, in the upgrade of the product mix, and in improving the energy and production efficiency of its factories. According to the latest data, a total of 200 newly built or technically updated ceramic tile production lines came into operation in China in 2021. In addition, CTW informs that in the first quarter of the current year, 12 new production lines of 8 ceramic companies have received the approval of building or revamping their production lines and at least 26 companies plan to do the same during this year. The upgrade of the product mix is now a must for Chinese companies, both due to the fierce market competition that force the brands to differentiate their offer, and due to necessity to increase the selling prices to compensate the higher production costs (raw materials, energy, carbon emission requirements, logistics). Porcelain slabs, thick tiles and ecological health functional tiles have become mainstream products in the market. Alone in 2021, around 48 new lines for the production of large-sized slabs (mainly 750×1500 mm and 900×1800 mm) were started up. At the same time, a new phase of transformation has begun to respond more effectively to the latest challenges, from soaring materials and energy costs to the need for energy-saving and eco-friendly production processes. No doubt, in fact, that under the background of “dual control” of total energy consumption and intensity and carbon peak policies, ceramic factories with high energy consumption and high emissions will be strictly controlled and eliminated from the market. No surprise, then, to read that 340 Chinese ceramic factories have already invested in photovoltaic power generation projects. In this scenario, Uniceramics Expo, to be held from 20 to 24 July in Foshan, will be the perfect chance to get a complete picture of the Chinese ceramic industry and seize new market opportunities. 5

Certech Group (Casalgrande, Reggio Emilia) continues its growth trend, closing 2021 with a consolidated turnover of €52.6 million (up 40% on the €37.6 million of 2020), excluding the revenues generated by its foreign branches Certech USA, based in Lebanon, Tennessee, Certech Spain in Onda (Castellón de la Plana) and Certech Mexico in Monterrey, Nuevo León. Sacmi RobotGlaze, 12 new glazing robots for Kohler Asia Pacific The partnership between SACMI and Kohler Asia Pacific has been renewed with the supply of RobotGlaze solutions for the robotized glazing of sanitaryware. Following numerous successful machine installations carried out in recent years, especially at the Foshan Kohler and Zibo Kohler plants, the customer once more commissioned SACMI to supply a further 12 glazing robots. This new project is part of an ambitious plan by the multi-national manufacturer of top-quality design sanitaryware to expand its production capacity in China.

In particular, 8 robots are again destined for Foshan Kohler, hub of the Group’s operations in China since 1995. The new robotized glazing solutions will be added to the existing lines to reinforce the expansion plan at this production plant situated in the Sanshui district, Province of Guangdong. 4 RobotGlaze solutions, on the other hand, are to be installed at Shenyang Kohler, the factory based in the city of the same name which is among the most important industrial centres of North-Eastern China. With this investment, Kohler aims to replicate and extend to this market the hugely successful results already achieved on a world scale thanks to the SACMI robotized glazing systems already in operation at the Group’s other production units around the globe.

Esmalglass-Itaca, Fritta, Vetriceramici and Younexa, four companies belonging to the world-leading glaze, colour, ink and ceramic frit group Altadia, will become the main suppliers to the new plant currently being completed by the Viglacera Corporation on the southern outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. The factory is the eighth ceramic tile plant owned by the historic Vietnamese group and will produce large size ceramic tiles and slabs using Sacmi’s Continua+ technology for applications on floors, walls and kitchen countertops and as furnishing accessories. With this state-of-the-art plant, Viglacera aims to strengthen its leadership position in the highend porcelain market and has chosen the Altadia Group member companies as strategic suppliers to support the development and production of new collections. A number of factors contributed to the signing of this important agreement for both parties, in-

Duravit posted record revenues of €604 million in 2021, up 28% on the €469 million reported in 2020. The German bathroom furnishing multinational’s strong revenue growth was accompanied by an exceptional performance in terms of operating profit, which reached €73.7 million, up 41% compared to the already excellent 2020 result. The solid fundamentals achieved by the Hornberg-based group confirm the effectiveness of the strategy pursued by CEO Stephan Tahy, who has now set his sights on the goal of €1 billion revenue by Stephan Tahy 2025. ❱ The success of the local-for-local strategy The group’s longstanding “local-for-local” strategy, which contributes to its sustainability ambitions, has had a positive overall effect. With production facilities in Germany, France, Egypt, Tunisia, India and China, Duravit has focused on regional production and procurement routes to safeguard its supply capability (products are sold in 130 countries worldwide) despite the scarcity of global raw materials and supply chain bottlenecks. Much of the growth is a result of Duravit’s operations in China, where it not only generated revenues in excess of one billion RMB (approximately €139 million, 23% of total revenues) for the first time, but also increased its turnover by 32% with respect to 2020. Stephan Tahy commented: “The reinvigorated retail sector in China played a part along with significant growth in the increasingly important e-commerce sector. ❱ New Investments in China and Egypt The growth achieved in China has prompted Duravit to make new technological investments in its Chongqing factory, one of the most modern and automated facilities in the country equipped with Sacmi plants for all production departments, from body preparation to the kilns, glazing lines and LGVs. The latest projects have involved the installation of modern pressure casting equipment for complex WCs (RobotCasting), as well as a fourth robot for automatic glazing (the RobotGlaze system with the GA-OL robot from Gaiotto), which joins the three already supplied for the lines built in 2019. Along with improved product quality and process sustainability, Duravit also chose to adopt the anti-bacterial glaze application solution, an added value of RobotGlaze which is currently proving very popular in the market. As for the casting department, Duravit has also opted for pressure casting for the production of highly complex WCs and bidets after using the solution for washbasins and cisterns. The chosen solution is AVI, the single-mould casting machine that stands out for its production flexibility and rapid mould change capability. The scope of supply included two AVI cells along with four moulds and two new models. Work at the Duravit China plant will continue during 2022, with four new AVI cells already being shipped. One of the most important investments made by Duravit in its other factories is the start-up of a fifth kiln in its plant in Egypt, where production output recently exceeded 2.5 million pieces per year, almost all of which were sold for export to overseas markets. As in the case of the four kilns installed in 2005, 2017 and 2018, Duravit once again opted for Sacmi-Riedhammer technology with an 8-module SSK 440/198-8 model equipped with innovative internal linings (cordierite-mullite refractory plates) which reduce the need for maintenance and improve the quality of the firing process. The kiln is equipped with a rapid cooling system which reduces the total first-fire cycle time to just 14 hours. 5

Just a few months after presenting the PCR 2180, the machine with the highest productivity on the market with an output of over 21,000 m2/ day of slabs and submultiples, Sacmi is now launching the brand new PCR 2120, the smallest, most compact and versatile machine in its category. As Sacmi’s Forming Product Unit director Gianluca Pederzini put it, this solution is capable of “breaking down the last barrier separating slabs and standard size tiles”. ❱ The highest levels of productivity The PCR 2120 can produce slabs with thicknesses of up to 20 mm, a potentially infinite length and a maximum width of 120 cm after firing (the equivalent of two 60x60 cm cavities). Considering a 1 cm thickness and sizes of 60x60 cm, 120x120 cm and submultiples, productivity stands at 16,000 m2/day, the highest in this category. The PCR 2120 also delivers outstanding compactness and lower operating expenses, and depending on the product to be made it can incorporate from 1 to 5 powder feeders. Downstream from the compactor, each version features a TPV cutting machine that enables manufacturers to create all the required sub-sizes in a coordinated, automated manner. “While bringing together all the characteristics of the other machines in the Continua+ family such as flexible size changeovers, low scrap levels and the lowest consumption on the market, the new PCR 2120 responds to manufacturers’ needs to keep productivity high even when dealing with smaller average batch sizes, frequent size changeovers and the need to develop products with greater added value such as dry decoration,” observes Alberto Tassoni, Sacmi’s Forming Product Manager (Tiles Business Unit). According to Pederzini, this is because it combines all the productivity, cost and space-saving advantages of a traditional pressing solution with the versatility of Continua+ in terms of size changeover management.

❱ Unrivalled performance The new PCR 2120 stands out for four key characteristics: • excellent performance on different sizes (80x80 cm and 90x90 cm, with productivities ranging from 10,600 m2 to 12,000 m2); • potentially infinite slab length; • rapid changeovers (always under 30 minutes); • superior quality without any falloff in productivity, especially in the case of decorated products, thanks to the continuous process with controlled de-airing. ❱ Consumption and sustainability The machine offers two advantages in terms of sustainability. Continua+ 2120 keeps production scrap levels below 3% at all times. Moreover, this waste is fully recyclable, regardless of the product size, so it is much lower than on alternative solutions. Importantly, about 2% consists of powders that can be fed directly into the production cycle without any reprocessing costs. The remainder can be sent back to the mills, ensuring zero waste along the entire production line. Specific consumption is also the lowest in the category at just 0.06 kWh per m2 for an installed power of 80 kW. Like previous solutions, the Continua+ 2120 uses just 120 litres of hydraulic oil, more than 95% less than on a discontinuous press, and brings more than proportional savings in terms of the energy needed to control the cooling circuit. ✕

Today industry has a clear duty to pursue the goal of environmental sustainability. But rather than making vague ecological statements and promoting generic green awareness, companies must adopt concrete, effective actions that produce measurable results. For years System Ceramics has been using part of its R&D investments to make an effective contribution to these issues. Lower CO2 emissions, monitoring of energy consumption and the reuse of waste are all tangible and verifiable results of these efforts. One example is Superfast, the latest System Ceramics technology for ceramic pressing designed to guarantee high levels of performance while caring for the environment and bringing considerable benefits in terms of energy savings. As the world’s first mouldless press, Superfast brings numerous advantages and a high degree of operational versatility, but to appreciate the true significance of the innovation it is important to understand the underlying premises of the technology. As industry professionals are well aware, the characteristics of a ceramic tile can be thought of as a series of layers. These are: an aesthetic level, consisting of a surface with visual and tactile characteristics; a resistance thickness that determines the mechanical strength of the tile and its ability to withstand loads according to the intended use and legal regulations; a technical thickness determined by the constraints of the production technology; and finally a perceptual thickness, which corresponds to commonly accepted stereotypes of what a tile should look like. Not all of these “layers” are necessary or serve to add value to the ceramic product. While the “aesthetic” layer and the “resistance thickness” are both essential aspects of a tile that respectively determine its beauty and its ability to withstand stresses during use, the same certainly cannot be said for the technical and the perceptive thickness, both of which can and must be reduced in order to lower consumption levels. Superfast is capable of producing medium, large and very large tiles in thicknesses ranging from 3 to 30 mm using a robust, efficient and flexible production process. Superfast removes everything that is superfluous from the finished product and eliminates waste during the production process by means of three steps: • uniform compaction; • pre-fire cutting; • the recovery system.

Uniform compaction equates with reduced thickness and calibre tolerances, resulting in lower costs and fewer rejects. The cutting machine makes it possible to produce an unfired tile with the most appropriate size, helping to optimise the subsequent production processes: the pressed spray-dried material is cut after shaping and the excess raw material produced during the cutting process is fully recovered. While Superfast overcomes all technical constraints, the final aspect concerns the stereotypes that determine the choice of tile thicknesses on the part of consumers. A radical new approach is needed to transform the way tiles are conceived as finished products and to convey the message that although greater thicknesses equate with stronger and more resistant tiles, they are in fact entirely unnecessary and simply result in greater consumption and waste. As in all sectors, in the ceramic industry supply inevitably adapts to demand. The more the market continues to ask for large thicknesses, the more the industry will continue to supply them but without providing any real benefits. In terms of sustainability, it is essential to promote an approach focused on using only what is necessary. This way, a given surface area of tiling will equate with a smaller quantity of consumed materials, bringing benefits for all steps in the supply chain, from processing the spray-dried product to firing, transport to the point of sale and so on. A philosophy based on the “essentials” achieves concrete energy savings in all its many different aspects. Each box has a number of independent channels into which the air can be introduced, thereby controlling its flow and guaranteeing uniform drying. New Pearl’s new Heat Recovery System

Thanks to its extensive experience in the field of energy saving, Poppi Clementino (Reggio Emilia, Italy) was chosen by the New Pearl group, China’s largest tile manufacturer, to design and build a fully automated heat recovery system to reduce the consumption of thermal machines in the new factory in Sanshui (Foshan) devoted to the production of large size ceramic tiles and slabs. Sized according to the specific needs of the customer, the system is extremely flexible and uses heat recovered from the flue gases from a double-channel kiln. The presence of two innovative, self-cleaning, high-efficiency plate heat exchangers (an evolution of the previous models) allows a significant quantity of clean hot air to be supplied to the dryers and pre-dryers, resulting in significant savings in methane gas consumption and reduction in CO2 emissions. Using state-of-the-art numerical modelling software, Poppi has studied the flow patterns and currents inside the machine to improve its internal design and achieve unprecedented levels of thermal efficiency for the ceramic industry.

Innovative hyperdispersants for water-based digital inks

One of the most important characteristics of Lamberti’s products is their transversality, which enables them to be used in many different departments across multiple industrial sectors. Each individual product can be developed by R&D and technological centres involving many application labs. Nowadays Lamberti’s strategic role is to provide state-ofthe-art technologies, as evidenced by its strong presence in innovative sectors such as grinding media and polymeric surfactants (i.e. hyperdispersant agents). In recent years the company has focused its R&D efforts on water-based hyperdispersants. Combining oleochemistry (surfactant), acrylic and polyurethane technologies, Lamberti has developed a new brand of polymeric dispersing agents called the Fluijet® series. • Fluijet® for solvent-based formulations: The main characteristics explaining the outstanding dispersing properties of Fluijet® are its multiple chains (like the teeth of a comb) with a high affinity for the continuous phase, resulting in a high level of steric stabilization. The multiple anchoring points on the backbone of the comb assure much better coverage of the dispersed phase. • Fluijet for water-based formulations: Anionic comb polymers that combine acrylic and oleochemical technologies, developed by Lamberti’s R&D teams to form the backbone and the teeth of the comb. Lamberti has designed products with different backbones and different types of teeth. ®

The following products complete the range of additives for Lamberti’s digital solutions: • Printojet: solvents & media for grinding organic and inorganic stains/pigments to a sub-micron particle size for the formulation of inkjet printing inks. • Tensiojet: a family of special surfactants for surface tension adjustments, levelling action and anti-hydrorepellency. ❱ How do hyperdispersants work? Hyperdispersant agents are polymers that combine dispersing properties with a surfactant capability. When the ink has been obtained, the application lab implements a protocol for the purpose of evaluating the performance of the hyperdispersant through specific analysis methods, focusing in particular on ink stability. The combination of Flexy Velvet and Zero Gloss prepares, treats and protects the surface, producing unprecedented matt results and the flexibility to adapt to different types of tiles. Surfaces T.A. tools are used after the polishing stage to ensure a clean surface without large visible marks, preparing it in the best possible way for the subsequent satin finishing treatment. The Luna Abrasivi range performs the actual satin finishing process. Three different types of tools have been specially designed and produced: Sat Dot Flex (equipped with dotted sectors with varying degrees of rigidity), Sat Dash Flex (with medium-sized segmented sectors) and Sat Tris Flex (with continuous lines for uniform surfaces). These tools can be applied to polishing plants either alternately or in sequence depending on the desired final effect and the characteristics of the surface. Digital finishing: sustainability, efficiency and control

Because BMR has always focused its R&D efforts on increasing the production efficiency of its machines, it has never considered digitalisation purely a matter of style or competitiveness. Rather, it sees it as a tool that helps client ceramic companies improve their margins and achieve a balance between costs and benefits by reducing waste and errors and optimising resources. This approach is more important than ever for ceramic manufacturers given the current increases in energy costs and raw materials shortages, which in turn are leading to severe sourcing difficulties and soaring prices. To achieve total control over the entire production process, especially the finishing stage, BMR is proposing a new approach based on full integration into a digital service platform. By creating systems that allow for objective data analysis and optimal machine settings, BMR aims to optimise every stage, making the production process as objective as possible in order to reduce waste (in particular by avoiding the loss of batches of slabs due to chipping, processing errors or lapping) and guarantee greater efficiency and consequently improved margins. This vision has prompted BMR to develop new versions of two of its flagship products: SuperShine and Leviga Digital. These new models are based on a vision in which business management is integrated with production. By constantly exchanging information and introducing innovative, less empirical technical solutions into the different stages of the process, it will be possible to achieve maximum customisation of the finished product in a market that increasingly favours “on-demand service”. This approach promotes a sense of “process awareness” that includes key aspects such as quality and yields, as well as consumption of materials and the use of resources. This enables the surface machining process to be mapped to ensure the greatest possible uniformity. Surface machining refers to the time the tools spend on the individual units making up the surface. This software is able to analyse the way the machine operates on the surface of the tiles, which can be very useful for verifying unsubstantiated and subjective theories based on experiments that lack scientific value. The Leviga Simulator also facilitates use of the machines by proposing an ideal setup according to the desired machining operation and provides remote assistance, including the best possible programmable setup in the event of problems. Finally, the Leviga Digital is equipped with a series of solutions to allow ceramic companies to create variations in finish that make the surfaces unique, an effect that becomes particularly evident once the tiles have been installed. The fact that each slab can have many different combinations of finish further enhances this sense of uniqueness. For example, it will be possible to create a slab with a 60% machined surface, of which 30% might be satin finished, 20% glossy and 10% natural. Different combinations of tools can be mounted on the machine to further increase the potential for variability and customisation. In conjunction with specific machine set-ups, the tool is able to create exclusive irregularities. Leviga Digital therefore also helps ceramic manufacturers improve their energy efficiency and profitability. The new solution will be presented at Tecna 2022.

The latest version stands out for its high performance, its environmental friendliness and above all the fact that it is ultra-connected, with constant data sharing for the purposes of process control. Installing it on the line will result in the integration of two functions: the aesthetic function of polishing based on the mechanical action of the tools, and the protective treatment resulting from the closure of the surface pores. SuperShine Digital is the first and only dry super-polisher that can guarantee these two functions along with digitalisation of the entire polishing and treatment process. The new digital component allows the machine to use the satellite heads via software to apply a product A, such as a surface protector which bonds mechanically to the treated surface and closes the porosity by means of a filling and sealing process. Depending on market requirements, the customer could also decide to use a product B to give the surface specific functions. SuperShine Digital will therefore be able to guarantee advantages, levels of performance and versatility that could not be achieved with traditional systems, largely thanks to modules with 10, 12, 16 and 10+10 heads. Placing the new super polisher at the centre of the new finishing department will improve the efficiency and productivity of the line, reduce its fixed production costs and significantly improve the quality of the ceramic surface due to its ability to remove finishing defects such as streaks, feed marks and fine scratches. As mentioned above, the use of new tools optimises resources and reduces waste. The new Supershine Digital version will also be unveiled at Tecna 2022 from 27 to 30 September in Rimini. “BMR aims to achieve complete process control based on systems that allow for objective data analysis and optimal machine set-up,” explains Matteo Immovilli from the BMR R&D Department. “In these times of soaring energy costs and extremely expensive and hard-to-find raw materials, it is essential to reduce production waste and help ceramic companies recover lost margins. Losing production batches due to defects and errors during treatment and lapping is simply unacceptable. BMR’s goal is to achieve the maximum efficiency of the line, so our R&D work and efforts to improve process efficiency are always aimed at anticipating market demands.” 5

Latest technologies Certech Group The Certech group designs and builds efficient, state-of-the-art plants for processing ceramic products. The group consists of the companies Certech, Rubber Tech, Vibrotech and Eurorubber, as well as subsidiaries in Spain, Mexico and the USA. Given the diversity of these companies, the group is able to control the entire production process, from raw materials preparation (including the production of rubber compounds and products) through to the installation of equipment such as spray dryers, screening and deferrization systems and glazing lines. One of the Certech group’s main strengths is its ability to meet the needs of individual ceramic manufacturers and supply not just technology but also expert technical and commercial support. As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, the group is also involved in developing techniques for reducing waste production. By replacing machine components with more technologically advanced solutions it is possible to facilitate reuse and reduce waste, thereby lowering the environmental footprint of the process. “Certech has also developed a unique new kind of wet raw material milling plant that offers a range of advantages including increased productivity, energy savings and the absence of plant engineering constraints,” says Certech sales manager Salvatore Russo (pictured). “The plant stands apart from the solutions currently available on the market thanks to a series of technological innovations protected by Italian and international patents,” he adds. Wet grinding plants equipped with MCM modular continuous mills developed by Certech guarantee higher productivity while maintaining the same capacity. The first operates in the same way

as a normal continuous mill, with the grinding charge level with the intake auger. The various modules are completely independent. A vibrating screen installed between the second and third modules serves to remove large-grained hard material that has not been ground by the second module. This means that only the material ready for fine milling is sent on to the third refining module, while the discarded fraction is sent back to the entrance of the first module for regrinding by the larger milling bodies. The second and third modules are equipped with double diaphragms located at both the entrance and the exit. This allows the level of the grinding media to be increased to 60% of the volume, significantly increasing the quantity of grinding charge and the number of contact points between the grinding media. This in turn results in an increase in production. It has been demonstrated that increasing the quantity of grinding media to 60% of the volume (instead of 45% as is the case with conventional continuous modular mills) ensures considerable energy savings during operation. To reduce energy consumption, the level of the slip in the second and third modules is increased by adopting a forced pumping system to feed the slip into the modules in conjunction with a specially designed pipe at the mill exit. The modular mills supplied by Certech are all independent thanks to the use of centrifugal pumps that have been specially designed and built in-house to feed the second and third modules. This allows for the creation of a grinding plant layout based on that of a traditional continuous modular mill while at the same time eliminating all plant constraints. Certech mills can be installed longitudinally or transversely while maintaining the

same grinding characteristics. In some cases, a set of modular mills has been installed across two separate buildings.

Latest technologies Vidres Research efforts in the field of glazing have largely evolved in step with market trends, responding to the demand for new glazes and grits capable of creating surfaces with a glossy finish or anti-slip or anti-bacterial properties. The quest for increasingly natural-looking finishes is another of the major trends to have emerged in recent years. Vidres has developed several product lines to meet the needs of each of these types of surfaces. For polished surfaces, for example, it has developed glazes that reduce open porosity after the polishing process and

ensure a high level of transparency and final gloss. This has made it possible to produce marble finishes in all possible colours and with the same gloss level as natural products. Vidres has also developed a wide range of non-slip solutions: Kratos glazes, which combine non-slip characteristics with a finish that is pleasant to the touch; the Duragrip technique, which uses microgranules in the final applications; and the Tecnoker series of spherical microgranules which generate slip resistance properties when added to the glaze. The standout product in the

field of antibacterial glazes is Bioglaze, which complies with ISO-22196: 2011 and JIS Z 2801 standards and has become a benchmark in the market due to its ease of application and wide range of uses. Relief effect finishes are achieved using Rocker, an ink capable of generating reliefs of all kinds (stone, veined, geometric, wood effect) with an extremely natural look and sense of depth in terms of both textures and the detail of the microstructure. Finally, the new Croma line can be used to produce wall tiles with metallic finishes in an extremely wide range of colours.
