Local Film and Creative History

Located just six properties south of the historic D.L. James “Seaward” House that was purchased in 2022 by Oscarwinning actor Brad Pitt for $40 million, the home sits at the north end of famed Spindrift Road

This gated Carmel Highlands Mid-Century Modern Retreat is currently owned by Screenwriter Richard Outten, whose writing credits include the Warner Bros hit film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island starring Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson and Salinas-born actress Vanessa Hudgins.

A street rich with film and artistic history, a number of neighboring properties on Spindrift have been featured on screen over the years.

The cliffside house in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 directorial debut Play Misty For Me is located three doors down.

The home, where Donna Mills’ character resides, appears in the opening shot as well as the finale when Jessica Walter’s character falls to her death on the rocks below

Next to the Misty house is the oceanfront estate used in Basic Instinct, the 1992 thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone, which doubled as Stone’s Stinson Beach house. The property was later owned by the late billionaire adventurer Steve Fawcett.

Local Film and Creative History

The environment has attracted and inspired other creative talents. Rock star and Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar once lived in an iconic Mark Mills designed architectural masterpiece “Far-A-Way” on Spindrift Cove also known as the “Copper Spine House.” The Seaside Fortress was featured in the May 5, 1967 issue of Life Magazine. It has since been remodeled although the front slope of the roof can still be seen.

Perched on the bluff overlooking the cove is a Craftsmen Style home owned by renowned photographer Ansel Adams, that has since been renovated.

Midway down the street, just past the cove, behind a stone wall and wrought iron gates is the sprawling estate where the exciting end sequences of the 1962 comedy The Notorious Landlady starring Kim Novak and Jack Lemmon were filmed.

The gated entrance to the property was also featured in the 1947 Bob Hope film My Favorite Brunette, which was filmed largely around the peninsula.

Adjacent to that property you’ll find Spindrift Lane. Kim Novak resided in a castle-like residence on the lane for many years.

At the end of the lane was the house featured in the 1956 Doris Day thriller, Julie

The scenic street itself, with is oceanfront cliff and canopy of towering Cypress trees, appears in the films as well. It’s no surprise that the unforgettable and inspiring beauty of Spindrift Road became the choice location of so many filmmakers and creative artists over the decades.
