Timber Expo moving to the NEC in 2013 is great news for everybody involved in the event and within the timber industry. The NEC is a fantastic venue and is the ideal location for the further expansion of the show
FIGHTING FIT FOR 20I3 Timber Expo is moving to a new venue for 2013 and moving up a gear in its quest to take timber to the heart of the UK construction industry. Welcome to the UK’s truly national timber show… With a strategic move to the Birmingham NEC, Timber Expo is ramping up for an expanded show that will attract exhibitors from the UK and expanding overseas markets. The NEC will also make a huge difference to visitors with improved transport options and routes. Both Timber Expo and TRADA are committed to presenting a truly national show for timber technology and showcase what this incredible low carbon material can do. The show is already 75% sold out with six months to go to the show and with an expected 180 companies exhibiting this year at the NEC, Timber Expo Event Director, Loretta Sales is confident the move is an exciting one. “Timber Expo moving to the NEC in 2013 is great news for everybody involved in the event and within the timber industry. The NEC is a fantastic venue and is the ideal location for the further expansion of the show. “The transport links make it even easier for our visitors and exhibitors to get here. In fact, the airport being connected with the
4
venue was a key element in choosing the NEC, as the vast majority of our key target regions are overseas exhibitors (including Austria, Finland, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Poland and Latvia) that all have direct flights into Birmingham International. We are working closely with the UKTI on this and have some fantastic developments in store.” NEC business development director Chris Hartley also welcomed the move, saying: “The NEC has proved time and time again that the flexibility of our venue and of our approach to our clients means that not only can we cater for events of all shapes and sizes, but as a dedicated exhibition and conference destination we actually help our customers to grow their events.” Looking ahead even further to 2014, Timber Expo will also rub shoulders with W14 – a key show for the joinery and furniture trades – to truly bring the timber industry together at the same place and at the same time. So the location and scope of this year’s event will prove to be an evolutionary move for all involved.

TIMBER ACCORD PAVILION To bolster the message for 2013, the creation of a Timber Accord Pavilion will be a central hub of activity. Sponsored by
Timber Industry Summit
2013
ProTimber
Last year saw the first ProTimber summit take place the day before Timber Expo officially opened and where under the headline banner of ‘one vision one voice’, a wide range of timber industry leaders met to take part in the first of a regular annual gathering to discuss the opportunities ahead for the timber sector. This was boosted by cross timber trade association support from BWF, CONFOR, TDCA, TIMCON, TRADA, TTF, UKSIPS, UKTFA, Wood for Good, WPA and WPIF. The ProTimber 2013 event will take place within the main exhibition space and will be an integral part of the show.
To bolster the message for 2013, the creation of a Timber Accord Pavilion (sponsored by Timbmet - see page 20) will be a central hub of activity where 10 trade associations will be one place. This pivotal grouping will start to build on the principles of the Timber Accord agreement signed last year between the industry’s main trade associations. They will be there to present the strategy of the Accord and its focus to improve and boost the profile of the industry to the wider construction world. If you have any questions about the timber industry and what it can offer you – this truly will be the only place to be in September 2013.

SHOWTIME REVISTED Timber Expo 2012 saw an expanded exhibition space and an impressive list of exhibitors come together to promote timber as one of the most exciting and sustainable construction materials on the marketplace.
The expanded size and scope of Timber Expo was hailed as an outstanding success by exhibitors and visitors alike and the buzz of the two days was a serious step change from 2011 with a 15% growth on visitor numbers.

For everyone that exhibited and attended Timber Expo, one thing was obvious – the 2012 event delivered on its promise to be the only place in the UK for anyone interested in the timber sector. It was also given a new flavour, with the addition of ProTimber2012 – the timber industry summit – that kicked off proceedings the day before the main halls opened for business. The afternoon centred on the presentation of two pieces of commissioned research from specialist consultancy Lychgate. The two studies, separated by panel and audience discussion, examined key issues pressing the timber sector and its wider industry perceptions. “The event put its finger on a number of key points, provided plenty of facts and opinions and proved an excellent format for engaging with everyone involved,” said TRADA’s Rupert Scott, who organised the
ProTimber Summit and Timber Talks Seminar Programme for Timber Expo. “We look forward to working with the associations signed up to the Timber Industry Accord, to contribute to its future strategy over the next 12 months and tackle some of the amazing opportunities timber is creating.” The expanded size and scope of Timber Expo was hailed as an outstanding success by exhibitors and visitors alike and the buzz of the two days was a serious step change from 2011 with a 15% growth on visitor numbers. The Timber Talks seminar programme offered up a feast of in-depth, pan-industry presentations held in the three bespoke seminar theatres designed and created especially for Timber Expo by UKSIPS, Frame Wise and Deeside Timberframe with James Jones & Sons.

Frame Wise has seen unprecedented interest in the business from visitors to the show. Frame Wise managing director Simon Orrells, said: “If Timber Expo was a reflection of the appetite for sustainable and cost-effective build solutions, then we're in good shape to take advantage of the visitors to the house. We used the show as an opportunity to showcase a broad range of hybrid timber wall systems including our latest innovation Wise Wall.”
The Timber Expo Awards and electronic rosettes were presented for product innovations and stand displays, with the Supreme Award for Innovation won by Accsys Technologies Other awards were Best Custom-built stand: Lonza Wood Protection Best Tooling & Fastening/ Fixing Innovation: Simpson Strong-Tie
Constructing the Frame Wise house was a significant achievement considering the time frame and physical constraints of the Ricoh facing the erection team Regal Carpentry. Simon adds: “The success of Timber Expo was as much about the effectiveness of our supply chain as it was about the timber systems we showcased. We have incredible relationships with our key partners and it is this through this collaboration that we lead the timber frame industry to be more innovative and cost focused.” The Frame Wise partners included Boise Cascade, Regal Carpentry, Cellecta, Superglass and Greenwood. “For a show of its size Timber Expo punches well above its weight,” said
TRADA marketing manager Rupert Scott. “The seminar structures were great adverts for timber engineering in their own right and the seminars proved popular in terms of numbers attending and the feedback we received. The seminar programme was one of the most important tools we used to attract more specifiers and contractors.” For Timber Expo’s Event Director, Loretta Sales, the 2012 show was confirmation that the organisers have been, far sighted, diligent and conscientious in their approach in creating a show that reflects what the industry wants and give a signpost to the direction it is heading. “Once again I was very impressed by the level of professionalism, innovation, information and design that went into the exhibitor’s stands at the show. We are continually striving to improve Timber Expo and ensure that every year we have something new and interesting for everyone attending.” For more information on Timber Expo 2013 exhibition and sponsorship opportunities email Loretta Sales: loretta.sales@timber-expo.co.uk

NEXT STOP BIRMINGHAM For TRADA, Timber Expo 2012 delivered on its promise to be bigger and better. With a new venue, a fresh faced Timber Talks programme and an increased international flavour to the event, Timber Expo 2013 will be the best yet. TRADA Marketing Manager, Rupert Scott explains… As Henry Ford famously wrote: “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress but working together is success.” He could have been talking about last year’s Timber Expo, an exceptional collaboration between TRADA, show organisers Radar Communications and the thousands of industry professionals, architects, engineers, contractors and local authorities, who all helped make the show an unprecedented success. TRADA has never been an organisation to rest on its laurels. It planned long, thought hard and executed the plan for Timber Expo 2012 extremely well and the feedback was excellent.
The 'sold out' sign might have been metaphorical, but the Timber Talks were a resounding success
10
Timber Expo 2012 was certainly a successful exhibition for TRADA itself, which played a significant role in organising the show. The event saw an expanded exhibition space, an increased number of visitors, an expert set of Timber Talks seminars plus an impressive list of exhibitors, all coming together to promote timber as one of the most exciting and sustainable construction materials on the marketplace. For everyone that exhibited and attended Timber Expo, one thing was obvious – the 2012 event delivered on its promise to be the only place in the UK for anyone interested in the timber sector. It was also given a new dimension with the addition of ProTimber – the timber industry summit. This will run again this year and will take place inside the main body of the show. Details are still being finalized and
will be available from the TRADA and Timber Expo websites accordingly. One of the biggest changes from 2011 was replacing the ‘paid for’ In Touch with Timber conference with free seminars. The ‘sold out’ sign might have been metaphorical, but the Timber Talks were a resounding success, with many of the sessions reduced to standing room only. One of the most popular seminars was hosted by Ramboll Computational Design’s Harri Lewis, who discussed how the ‘Giraffe’ pavilion, which formed TRADA’s stand, was created and the technology used to develop the form into an easily constructed yet dramatic structure. The challenge TRADA has set itself for 2013 is to keep delivering fresh content, innovation, more products, new ideas and provide the latest industry information for all our visitors and exhibitors. But, like Henry Ford, TRADA knows that working together is the most efficient way to success. We are keen to continue to work with trade associations, professional bodies and its members to deliver a show to remember in 2013. where weight may be an issue. Suitable for external use as facades, cladding fascias and sofits, window and door elements, as well as wet environments. All Medite products are CARB2 compliant conforming to one of the strictest ever controls of formaldehyde emission levels.
For a timber products company, this parentage is a huge advantage. It differentiates Coillte Panel Products and puts us ahead of our competitors. At all stages, we can properly control the brands we produce – manufacture, market and support them. With Medite and SmartPly to our name and with a connection to thousands of hectares of forest, Coillte Panel Products are perfectly placed with security of supply and a record of innovation. That Medite is the leading brand of MDF can be attributed to two vital factors – consistent high quality and a large range of variants. Firstly, Medite Premier is always fit for purpose and Medite FR is a flame retardant panel. MR is moisture resistant, while Medite Exterior withstands all types of weather. Ecologique offers a zero added formaldehyde panel for use in environmentally sensitive interior applications and Medite Ultralite and Lite are perfect for applications
SmartPly OSB is both versatile and strong. Its end-use applications and its customers are diverse. Distributors, architects, and large construction companies, as well as many local smaller builders choose SmartPly over the competition. SmartPly OSB2 is a general purpose board and a popular choice for applications like garden sheds, packaging and pallet tops. SmartPly OSB3 is a load bearing panel designed for use in structural applications and where moisture may be present. SiteProtect and SiteProtect plus are OSB3-coated site hoarding panels, designed to save both time and money. ToughPly is a fully certified legal and sustainable OSB3 alternative to plywood suitable for a whole range of building applications. The UK’s brand leading solutions, Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB are highly-regarded with both products synonymous with quality, choice and innovation. www.coilltepanelproducts.com

THE TIMBER
ACCORD
You will be seeing and hearing more about the Timber Accord at the Timber Accord Pavilion in the centre of the exhibition. This will be a unique opportunity to touch base with the sector’s most influential trade bodies. For those unfamiliar with this positive step towards better collaborative working across the timber industry, here are its Common Goals and Objectives. Eleven trade bodies representing the supply chain of the forestry and timber industries have signed a working agreement to improve the competitiveness and performance across the timber sector. The Accord was signed at the offices of the Timber Trade Federation last year by the Chief Executives of each of the Associations. It commits each to working together in areas of common interest and strategic goals, in particular to ensure that stakeholders see a joined up, collaborative approach and that best use is made of available funding and resources. Implicit in this objective is an industry focus on customer needs and a drive for continual improvement in performance.
The Accord establishes a framework and methods of working between the signatories to achieve its objectives. John White, Chief Executive of the Timber Trade Federation, said: “This Accord formalises what we have often done on an informal basis – work together for the common good of the sector and our customers. The UK timber industry is worth roughly £10 billion a year – bigger than cement, concrete and a lot of other materials – and plays a vital role in our economy. Yet it can often seem overlooked as this is split between over 7500 small firms. This Accord will help us to act as one and show the importance of our sector to the UK economic recovery and low-carbon development.”

1. Work together on timber representation, promotion and market development activity whenever it is feasible to do so. The timber industry needs to work together in complementary and mutually supportive ways to achieve maximum impact from its resources. 2. Endorse and support to the best of their abilities any initiative by any signatory to this Accord that is in line with this objective. 3. Recognise the close relationship that each signatory has with its own community and to use these close relationships to best effect when planning and undertaking any new initiative or activity. FUTUREPROOF WITH FABRIC FIRST With rapidly increasing energy costs, the importance of energy efficiency has become a central concern to developers and property owners and occupiers across the UK. To deliver energy efficient buildings the construction industry needs to develop new ways of working and embrace the principles of the Fabric Frist approach – this was the key message consistently delivered at the Fabric First event in Birmingham earlier this month.
FabricFirstEvent The well attended conference and exhibition championed this approach and brought together nearly 200 designers, architects, engineers, homebuilders and developers to gain in-depth knowledge of the latest thinking and innovations. The event was the second major collaboration between the UKTFA and UK SIP Association. UKSIPS chairman, Charles Stewart commented: “The whole principle of fabric first makes sense! Why complicate buildings with complex micro-gen renewables if you don’t need to? Building well insulated, airtight structures using SIPS or advanced timber frame technology addresses the energy efficiency challenge head-on.” Eminent speakers grappled with the issues of meeting Building Regulations set to include Fabric Energy Efficiency (FEE), together with debating the government’s target to lower CO2 emissions by 2050. Speaking on behalf of Ingleton Wood, architect Jon Boon’s opening shot was to challenge the name of the event! ‘It should actually be Fabric Second’ he suggested but he hastened to vindicate the comment: “To achieve maximum
energy efficiency, the industry needs to go beyond Fabric First and apply the principles right back to the planning stages. It also demands collaboration right down the supply chain to ensure components and materials work together to the best advantage.” With the impending changes to Part L and the 2016 ‘zero carbon’ target looming, the choice of building envelope is vital to low carbon construction and according to speaker Professor Nick Whitehouse of Oxford Brooks University, the other key to getting the best results from a fabric first strategy is to combine this approach with offsite construction. “Offsite prefabrication not only means improved performance in terms of energy efficiency because components and systems are put together in a controlled factory environment, it also results in significant health and safety improvements. Paul King, Chief Executive of the UK Green Building Council acknowledged there was: “pressure to push back the 2016 zero carbon housing targets but the construction industry should resist this, as the latest materials, technologies and techniques present the sector with the opportunity to achieve the highest performance standards to become world leaders in designing and developing cutting edge energy efficient homes.” The Fabric First event was hailed a great success by delegates and exhibitors and Simon Orrells, MD of Frame Wise and UKTFA vice-Chairman, and sponsor of the event, commented: “We have experienced challenging times in the construction sector but this event had a real ‘feel good factor’. With an impressive line-up of speakers, the event was both informative and inspirational. It is clear that the UK is leading in the development of fabric first principles and technology. With our advanced Wise Wall system on display we conducted some excellent business at the event as the forum offered some great networking opportunities.”

American Softwoods is the umbrella name for two trade associations – the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) and the Softwood Export Council (SEC).
SFPA’s members are based mainly in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Texas and Georgia. They produce Southern Yellow Pine, the generic name for Shortleaf, Longleaf, Loblolly and Slash Pine.
Douglas Fir and Hemlock, in the clear and other upper grades are prized in Europe for wood window and door stock and frames. For strength, long lengths and large sections of solid lumber the Pacific Northwest is the place to go.
SEC’s members are located in Oregon and Washington. They produce Hemlock, Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar. Most US softwood exported is for non-structural uses. Interior applications, such as doors, windows, frames, mouldings, flooring, panelling, and other millwork is a prime destination for both Pine and Fir species. Furniture parts and glued panels are also a destination for softwood lumber. Western species, such as

Hoppings Softwood Products supplied Q-Grip heavy-duty anti-slip decking for an essential aspect of The London 2012 Olympic Games site at Stratford – decking for use on three of the footbridges (one, which crossed the River Lee and connected the north and south areas, was the longest bridge onsite, at over 50m) and two underpasses. The bridges and underpasses were essential to fulfil three remits, firstly they had to allow works access during creation of the infrastructure, then be suitable for access by the athletes and crowds during the Games, and finally to be re-useable in the community Legacy phase afterwards. Being able to remove and recycle the decking without causing any environmental or structural damage was an important aspect of the brief from CLM, the consortium responsible for delivery of the Games. Also key to the brief was sustainability and the concept of flexibility – while several of the bridges were to be
permanent, they were to have temporary decking installed alongside to increase the bridge width during August 2012, but this was to be removed and reused in other guises after the event. With its manufacture from strength-graded, FSC/PEFC-certified softwood from sustainable sources, coupled with the easily removable and recyclable features, ensured Q-Grip decking fulfilled the key elements of the original design.

Three of the world’s leading forest certification organisations will be sharing a stand at Timber Expo 2013 to promote and educate visitors on a wide range of issues surrounding the supply of legal and sustainable timber into the UK market. Joining PEFC will be the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) and the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC). All three organisations will be promoting the benefits of using certified timber as the introduction of the Illegal Timber Regulation (EUTR) to the UK continues to throw the focus on the importance of sourcing from certified sources. This year PEFC are also promoting two very specific schemes – Project & Group Certification. Project Chain of Custody Certification is a specific form of Chain of Custody certification for one-off short term projects involving different, smaller, uncertified contractors. The London Olympic Park was ProjectCertified to great acclaim in 2012. Group Chain of Custody Certification is a simple and cost effective way to achieve PEFCcertified status by joining or forming a Group Chain of Custody Scheme, such as
the successful one ran by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF). To help understand the vast and complex resource of tropical timber, the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) will be available to provide a wide range of information about Malaysia’s sustainable forestry management methods and SFI will also be present to give advice on the massive timber resource of the USA and Canada. Both MTCC and SFI are part of PEFC’s global network with national members in 34 countries. www.pefc.co.uk www.mtcc.com.my www.sfiprogram.org

WOOD FOR GOOD Wood for Good, the timber industry sustainability and promotion campaign is driving forward the collaborative research and development project – Wood First Plus. The aim of the project is to create a central point of information containing all of the data necessary to promote timber and timber products as a ‘primary and preferred construction material’ along with a programme to communicate this key data to key audiences. This process should also help improve on current industry sector performance
“Environmental impacts, along with cost and performance, are going to be key customer drivers for the foreseeable future across the construction products sector, says Stuart Harker, managing the project from the Timber Trade Federation. “Environmental sustainability assessment is increasingly delivered through assessment of supply chains, design, construction, whole-life assessment and end-of-life aspects. As these measurements increase in importance, so too does the demand for robust, accessible data. This project aims to deliver that.” Wood First Plus – named after Wood for Good’s Wood First campaign – is targeting three areas key to specification and design with timber: Carbon, Lifecycle Assessment and Engineering. The project is an ambitious undertaking and involves a core funding and operations team of Wood for Good, Timber Trade Federation, Forestry Commission Scotland, and TRADA. It will also involve consultation and input from wider timber industry organisations as well as extensive engagement and input from external stakeholders, including contractors groups, architects, professional institutions
and many others. The core team will manage the project and regularly communicate progress, primarily through Wood for Good. The final data for each workstream will be housed in its own easily accessible website – managed by Wood for Good. Priority products for data gathering include the following: Sawn Timber, Panel Products, Engineered Timber and Proprietary Products such as fixings and adhesives. “It is important that the information gathered is made easily accessible and communicated to the end-user effectively and freely, added David Hopkins, Head of Communications for Wood for Good. “Wood for Good, as the pan-industry communications campaign is a natural home for this. We will be promoting the results as they become available.” The project partners have been communicating with key stakeholders during last autumn to gather data across a range of product areas. The project will continue throughout 2013. If you would like to learn more about the Wood First Plus project or get involved, email: Stuart Harker on sharker@ttf.co.uk

The Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI) will be presenting twelve Bolivian timber product suppliers at Timber Expo 2013. These selected suppliers of tropical timber products are ready to form long-term, profitable relationships with European partners. The future of the wood sector lies in finished products. This is the prediction from CBI, the leading expert in imports from developing countries. “We see a clear trend in that direction among European buyers,” says CBI wood sector expert Marco Bijl. “More and more European companies are switching from manufacturing to buying and selling only.”
What is CBI? The CBI contributes to sustainable economic development in developing countries through the expansion of exports from these countries. CBI is an acknowledged expert in export development and export promotion from developing countries. For more information please visit our website www.cbi.eu. 34
These Bolivian suppliers were selected by experienced CBI sector experts. The companies have already invested heavily to prepare for success in Europe. They have been carefully audited in terms of quality, consistency and reliability and have completed the CBI Export Coaching Programme. They have adapted their organisations and products to the European market requirements, thus reducing the risk for European buyers. All are FSC-certified or in the process of certification. All are experienced exporters of finished products such as garden furniture, decking, doors, garden tiles, components and mouldings. “This trend towards finished products is becoming stronger every year,” says Bijl. “The combination of finished products and certification is definitely going to be
a winner in the future.” The twelve companies presented at the CBI Pavilion will display this winning combination. Over the past 40 years, thousands of exporters have found their way to Europe through CBI’s extensive programmes in export management, quality, reliability and the requirements necessary to succeed in the European market place These suppliers have the on-going support of CBI, as well as local organisations like CADEX, an important Bolivian service provider for Bolivian exporters. Representatives from most companies, as well as experienced timber experts from CBI, will be available at the Bolivian Pavilion. ARE THERE ANY TRULY ICONIC TIMBER BUILDINGS IN THE UK? Solid Wood Solutions
This question could be answered by the inexorable growth and popularity of solid wood such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glulam. Gary Ramsay picks out a few key points from the second Solid Wood Solutions (SWS) event held at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham recently. Would Cheshire Oaks be such a high profile sustainable success, involving so much community engagement, biodiversity, recycling and reuse (170 tons of unused timber went into community projects such as scout huts and bird boxes) and be such a feel good story, if it had been built with concrete or steel?
Taking in a stunning array of international case studies and presenting the best in overseas knowledge and expertise, SWS was an opportunity to hear some very definite reasons why glulam and cross laminated timber are being regarded so highly.
Glulam is at the core of one of the most sustainable buildings in the UK. Rosi Fieldson, from Simons Construction gave a brief overview of the much talked about M&S Cheshire Oaks project. The M&S is the second biggest in the UK and is being hailed as the greenest. M&S is the first retailer to use Hemclad® panels in the external walls and to use 100% FSCcertified glulam timber in its roof structure. Approximately 1,400m3 of glulam was used in the roof and first floor structural decking. The timber used sequestrated approx 2000 tons of CO2 or 100kgCO2/m2 of the floor area. “It was a journey into a future world and is a strong story for sustainability,” said Rosi Fieldson. “The use of timber was an integral part of creating a climate change resistant building and one that will be in a better place in 20 years time, than a building made with alternative materials. Glulam and timber is not just a material you buy but is a whole system of building and regeneration.”
Simon Smith of Smith & Wallwork, gave an alternative spin on the merits of solid wood by talking about ‘less solid wood solutions’. His fresh perspective on whether we should be using our only renewable construction material with more care was well received. His argument is a cogent one: CLT is a very ‘material intensive’ product and by reducing its weight and the amount of timber used – in a similar way to hollow care, pre-stressed concrete – the same dimensional strength/ stability can be created but with less raw resource. “Although there will be some fabrication issues with routes and holes,” said Simon. “The reduction in volume of timber required and ultimately reduced costs can all be streamlined through Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems.”

solid
wood solutions
TimberExpozine Spring 13 - www.timber-expo.co.uk
A common overarching theme from a UK perspective is demand. Here in the UK that demand is steadily growing and will continue as more projects go live but it’s still low compared to other parts of the world. Overseas, solid wood is a staple construction method. This was illustrated in the many case study presentations where a number of European projects were covered from specialists including, Binderholz (as partner in the X-LAM Alliance), MM-Holz, Mathis, Hess Timber, Wiehag and Wehmeyer. These included:
Looking ahead to the future, there is still a feeling that the industry needs to pull together on R&D and create a base for UK CLT. Transportation costs are an issue as the majority of the material is being imported from mainland Europe and this is taking the edge of the carbon reduction commitment. Engineered and solid wood solutions are exciting but they all require more technical data and lifecycle cost analysis to confirm its merits. And of course there needs to be long term demand and raw material supply.
• 105m span Ice Mall in Eilat – the largest glulam structure in the Middle East • Bangor Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland – the largest glulam roof structure in the UK • Canary Wharf Crossrail station – potentially the largest glulam project in the UK. • Anaklia Pedestrian Bridge in Georgia – at 500m long, the longest timber bridge in Europe and one of the largest in the World. • Inzell Speed Skating Stadium – the venue for the World Speed Skating Championships in 2011 including an 82.5m glulam span that is 200m long.
Still in its infancy but the use of CLT for multi-storey building will be an enormous growth area due to its high structural strength and durability. Stadthaus Murray Grove set the pace in London but international projects such as those being pioneered by Canadian architect Michael Green, whose 10-storey apartment building in Melbourne Australia is the tallest in the world, may soon be eclipsed by a 30-storey tower in Austria. Proof those solid wood solutions strengths and value to construction should not be underestimated.

THE BEST OF WOOD AWARDS 20I2
Showcased at Timber Expo, the Wood Awards once again revealed some stunning uses of timber across the built environment including the Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool, the winner of the top Gold Award. You can now visit some of the winning entries later this year – read on for more details.
he Hurlingham Club is recognised worldwide as one of Britain’s greatest quintessentially English private members clubs. Chairman of the judges, Michael Morrison of Purcell UK said: “The Wood Awards truly celebrates innovative design and craftsmanship, and the Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool is without doubt a worthy winner; we were presented with a whole hearted complete package. The careful analysis of what was loved about old changing room pavilion was sympathetic and the recreation and integration of all the elements which mattered were carefully considered and achieved with great craftsmanship. Delightful.”
T
The Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool first saw off competition of an exceptionally high standard to win the Structural category, before being awarded the winner of winners. Wood Awards structural judge Andrew Lawrence of Arup praised the Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool’s innovative timber structural solution, saying: “With its even front and repeating rhythm, the building is excellently resolved to make a special place. It is not only intelligent, but is as lovely as the images lead you to believe.”

EUTR Now LIVE After years of negotiations and preparations, the European Timber Regulation (EUTR) is now in effect and covers the whole of the EU, including the UK. For the first time ever, it will be a criminal offence to place timber and timber products onto the European market that are derived from illegally harvested logs. Companies caught doing so can face stock seizures, fines and criminal prosecution. John White, Chief Executive of the Timber Trade Federation, said: “On behalf of the entire timber industry, I would like to say how pleased we are that this law has come into effect. It is a great step forward in the fight against illegal logging and will help reinforce the actions and measures the industry has already been taking.” To minimise the risk of products from illegally harvested sources entering the supply chain, the EUTR requires all companies placing timber products onto
the European market to have a comprehensive and robust due diligence system in place. Through this system, first placers of timber or timber products must now, by law, collect information about the products and supply chains that they come through, assess the risk of illegally harvested timber being present and take appropriate mitigating actions if any risks are identified. Members of the Timber Trade Federation have been required to implement these levels of due diligence since 2010 as a compulsory condition of membership. The TTF provides all members with a free due diligence framework as well as a toolkit to help members assess and mitigate identified risks– the Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP). Companies failing to provide satisfactory evidence of having robust due diligence in place will be expelled from membership. Visit: www.ttf.co.uk www.eutr-platform.eu
Business Growth from Forestry Business angels are spreading their wings into the forestry sector, with Edinburghbased syndicate Par Equity preparing to launch a £10 million timber fund. The firm, founded by Paul Atkinson in 2008, believes that at least 50 investors will pile into the fund, which will probably feature a mix of individuals and institutions. Par Equity has already tested the waters with a trading partnership over the past two years, which brought together 18 investors to buy around £2m-worth of forestry. “This is a long-term form of investment, because it can take 35 years for trees to grow to the right size to be harvested. That works as a nice contrast
46
to some of the higher-risk but shorter-term investments that we make in technology companies,” said Atkinson. Par Forestry Partnership has also benefited from grants supplied by Forestry Commission Scotland to plant 160,000 Sitka spruce trees on 350 acres in Ayrshire. “There’s an increasing demand for forestry to supply timber for the construction industry, wood pulp for boarding and for biomass to be burned. The fund will look to raise a minimum of £5m, but I think a more realistic target is £10m. Visit: www.parequity.com

Olympic Work Can Now Go Public Suppliers of timber products to the London 2012 build project can finally promote their involvement with the Games after a landmark deal lifted the onerous marketing gag imposed on companies involved in Olympic contracts. Timber companies including Arnold Laver, which supplied about 50% of the timber products used in the Olympic project, and John Brash plan to take advantage of the new Supplier Recognition Scheme which will provide eligible suppliers with a special licence. The deal, reached by the government, British Olympic Association (BOA) and International Olympic Association, means suppliers can apply to the BOA for a licence which takes three to four weeks to process. Benefits will include being able to promote their work at trade shows in the UK and internationally, apply for industry awards for their London
2012 work and use their involvement in pitches and tender documentation when competing for international contracts. The licence will also give businesses exclusive access to the Olympic Delivery Authority's extensive image library. But restrictions will include no paid-for advertising and no use of Olympics logos or protected marks. Enforcement of the scheme will be by the IOC, BOA and British Paralympic Asociation. The London 2012 Olympic Park gained dual FSC and PEFC Project Certifcation for its timber supply – a world first. Visit www.srs2012.com
James Jones Supports First Net Zero Carbon Timber Structure in the UK James Jones Timber Systems are involved in an exciting project at the Masters Unit of the School of Architecture in Dundee University. The project, located at Dundee’s Botanic Gardens, is creating one of the first full-scale, fully autonomous, net zero carbon timber structures in the UK. Designed on a 50sqm live-work space, the project will showcase ultra-low energy technologies and self-build practices suitable for use in Scotland. The wider objective is to provide a prototype for Passivhaus-compliant, off-grid buildings that rely on renewable energy sources as the only means of generating space heating, hot water and power. Called Macro Micro, the prototype is being built by eight 5th year Masters students, and is due to be completed in May 2013. The design and technologies will be tested in a real-world situation over a period of four years, and the building will be open to the public to showcase these
new strategies to the housing sector and home owners. It will also provide a publicly available seminar space; a studio for the Botanic's artist-in-residence; and some additional office space. As part of their support to the project, James Jones Timber Systems hosted a visit of the students and supervisors to their production plant in Forres, where the group had the opportunity to see the joist manufacturing process and to discuss the technical aspects of their project. Dr Neil Burford of Dundee University’s School of Architecture said: “The ability to work and meet with industry professionals such as James Jones & Sons has been tremendous, not only in pushing the project forward to the next stage of construction, but also in increasing our understanding of standard timber and engineered timber manufacture.” Visit: www.jji-joists.co.uk

BSW Timber Export to Kuwait, Dubai and China BSW Timber has revealed details of a major export deal with timber distributors from Kuwait, Dubai and China. BSW’s Dalbeattie sawmill is to supply around 5000m3 of kiln dried Easi-Edge sawn timber for the international shipment which is being shipped in 100 containers. The deal is part of a continued UK export programme from BSW’s Dalbeattie, Fort William and Newbridge-on-Wye mills. This has so far seen 35,000m3 of sawn timber shipped overseas, equating to 675 containers, including a major shipment to Alexandria in Egypt in late 2012. The export deal from BSW’s Dalbeattie mill follows recent significant on-site
investment, including installation of a brown treatment tank and multi-head cross cutting facilities for the mill’s added-value fencing products. Ian Murchie, Mill Manager at Dalbeattie, said: “We are seeing increased demand from international markets for our homegrown sawn timber - especially in Central Europe, the Middle East and China. “Our considerable investment programme in the site here in Dalbeattie means we are well placed to meet this demand, and look forward to announcing further export deals in the near future.” Visit: www.bsw.co.uk
Grown in Britain – an industry driver Dr Peter Bonfield OBE has been invited by DEFRA Secretary of State Owen Paterson and the wood industry to chair a panel of business leaders in establishing a market demand-led action plan for the sector. Called Grown in Britain, the aim of the plan is to create a viable economic, social and environmental future for the UK's forests and woodlands. This will enable the enormous benefits they bring society and the environment to be protected, nurtured and increased. The plan is a key part of the Government’s response to the report of the Independent Panel on Forestry in 2012. Its focus will be to build on new cross sector market opportunities that will drive new jobs, skills and growth. Grown in Britain will focus on three main areas: creation of a new and strong market pull for forest products, to develop private sector funding that
48
supports the planting and management of forests as part of a CSR policy and to connect and harness the positive energy and feelings that forests create to increase community wellbeing. The Confederation of Forest Industries (Confor) will lead on developing a plan for revitalising the timber supply chain, building on work undertaken so far. Its Chief Executive Stuart Goodall commented: "A vibrant woodland and wood industry can deliver green growth, reduce atmospheric carbon and promote wildlife. Connecting the woodland with the market offers huge opportunities." A Grown in Britain week will run October 14-20 to coincide with the publication of the panel’s report Visit: www.defra.gov.uk/news

Wood Windows the 'Most Sustainable Choice' A new study has been launched that examines the cradle-to-grave environmental impacts of wood, modified wood and aluminium-clad windows and provides a comparison with PVC-U. Conducted by Dr Gillian Menzies of the Institute for Building and Urban Design, Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, it is the final stage of a suite of studies that includes Service Life Planning and Whole Life Costing. Using SimaPro software, it provides evidence that wood is the most sustainable choice, showing that PVC-U windows have roughly four times the CO2e impact of wood windows and roughly twice the impact of modified wood or aluminiumclad windows. For the first time, specifiers are able to use authoritative data to compare window types across durability, value and environmental impact. The study examines different exposure conditions and maintenance regimes. It finds that wood windows made to Wood Window Alliance standards have an expected service life of around 60 years – approximately twice as long as PVC-U - while modified wood and aluminiumclad windows will last even longer.
National housebuilder Persimmon has reported a 52% growth in annual pre-tax profits to £225.1m (2011: £148.1m) and an “encouraging” start to 2013. Persimmon’s Space4 timber frame manufacturing operation has seen a 2% growth in sales, plus the commissioning of a new wall production line. In 2012 sales at the Space4 closed panel timber frame manufacturing business grew 2% to 3,300 new home kits – 98% of which were procured by the Persimmon group. The start-up of a new wall panel line is expected to support further growth. The company said floor cassette production was now
complemented by the supply of an alternative loose fit flooring system to improve overall on-site construction processes and costs. Persimmon said: “The adoption of a fabric first approach to achieving more exacting thermal efficiency standards encompassed within the improvement to building regulation in support of achieving future zero carbon objectives has doubled demand for Space4’s enhanced thermal wall range. We anticipate the use of this system will continue to increase as the demands of building regulations increase in the future.”
Although PVC-U is cheaper over 20 years, wood windows offer better value over 30 years or more, even allowing for maintenance; while modified wood and aluminium-clad windows offer better value in severe exposure conditions. Visit: www.woodwindowalliance.com
