JULY 2024

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER, JOHN D’ANGELO

Mid-year in Vail is a time of reflection, transition, growth, hope, and new beginnings. With another successful winter season wrapping up, April began with a busy week at The Sebastian – Vail that included the well-known Taste of Vail event, where Chef Kevin Erving and his team won the People’s Choice Award for Leonora’s Tongue & Cheek Salsa Verde, Lime Crema, Pickled Onions, Salsa Roja and Cilantro.

We also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the “Lost Boy.” On April 1, 1964, 14-yearold Marty Koether from Illinois was skiing with his family when he took a wrong turn. Instead of making his way down to Mid-Vail, he found himself waist-deep in a spring storm at the bottom of Game Creek Bowl. The next morning, April 2nd, he spent 6 hours climbing back to the top where he met up with ski patrol who took him back down to a roaring crowd in Vail Village. We invited Marty and his family back to Vail to celebrate the 60th anniversary of his miraculous survival. On April 2nd, we skied perfectly groomed Lost Boy with the now 74-year-old Marty under bluebird skies. This magnificent day was capped off with a meet and greet at the Colorado Snowsport Museum where hundreds came to salute him. Marty was found once again and just as grateful as the day he was discovered.

Summertime is underway and Vail continues to create a buzz for all to enjoy. The team is excited to offer many new events this summer including Wine and Flamenco Dinners, more live music in The Gambit Bar, a full-service pool party, and an exciting and fresh menu at Leonora. Exciting summer activities in Vail Village include the Thursday or Sunday Vail Farmers Market, Hot Summer Nights free concert series at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, the Bravo Dance Festival, Comedy Nights at The Gambit Bar, the hundreds of hiking and biking trails on the mountain, or one of our weekend Yoga sessions. And in case you’re wondering, yes, I came for the winter and stayed for the summer.

2024 SOUTH SEAS TARPON TOURNAMENT IN

SUPPORT OF FOLDS OF HONOR

Captiva Island was abuzz this May as the 2024 South Seas Tarpon Tournament brought together anglers, veterans, and families to support Folds of Honor, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to providing educational scholarships to families of fallen and disabled veterans and first responders. This inaugural tournament not only highlighted Captiva’s rich waters but also demonstrated a profound commitment to honoring those who have sacrificed for the country. The event, led by Timbers Company CEO and veteran Greg Spencer, aimed to make a tangible difference in the local community by funding scholarships for Folds of Honor recipients in Lee County, Florida.

Participants enjoyed a memorable weekend filled with camaraderie, heartfelt speeches, and family-friendly activities, raising $200,000 to fund 40 scholarships. The event’s highlight was a moving speech by Ashlyn McCain, a Folds of Honor scholarship recipient, whose story inspired every attendee to support the cause. The success of this event, made possible by generous sponsors and donors, ensures its return in 2025 on Memorial Day weekend, continuing the Timbers Company tradition of supporting and honoring the nation’s heroes.
