ARTIST PROFILE

INNER INSPIRATION RISING ABOVE THE PHYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL BUZZ Laqui is a self taught artist. Born in Argentina, Laqui grew up in a single parent household and money was hard to come by. Because of this, her dream of attending a college or university with formal art training was not realized. Despite the shortcomings, Laqui was able to take advantage of her environment and this helped her develop a strong sense of self discipline and inspiration that allowed her to teach herself and explore many artistic styles and techniques. Often not able to afford art materials, Laqui became proficient in using found objects and household items

22

TIME SOUTH

AUG 15TH - SEPT 2010

in her art, at times, employing hairspray as a medium, and using discarded plywood instead of canvas. Throughout her artistic development Laqui has faced many obstacles and challenges which have forced her to become a stronger, determined, and successful artist. This strength is evident in all her paintings and sculptures. The different topics in Laqui’s work, which are expressed through various mediums and vibrant colors describe how she is always striving for accept-

ance, joy and tranquility. Art has become a form of therapy for Laqui. She often turns to painting and sculpture as a means of expressing an emotional and psychological world that buzzes just below the surface with no other outlet but to create. If you are interested in learning more about Laqui’s work or if you want to commission a one of a kind work of art you can email her at laqui28@hotmail.com by phone at 954-822-1579

FINE DRESSMAKING WESTON’S BEST SEWING INSTRUCTOR By Sasha Vidalon I started dressmaking classes with Kandy about two years ago. Prior to then, I had virtually no experience using a sewing machine. The first dress I made with Kandy looks so professionally constructed that people often ask me where I bough it. When I tell them I made it, they can't believe I was able to sew with such precision and detail. Kandy teaches that paying attention to detail is important, so much so that the inside seams of my dresses look just as pretty as those on the outside! Every sewing lesson is fun and challenging - I always leave with new tricks and techniques that will undoubtedly be of use to me in the future. While I am now confident enough to sew garments on my own at home, I love continuing my lessons with Kandy because she always has something new to teach me. Thanks to my lessons with Kandy I was able to attend fashion design school in Paris last year and

24

TIME SOUTH

AUG 15TH - SEPT 2010

will be returning this fall for an internship with a fashion design company. Kandy has inspired me to continue on my path in fashion design and I know she will continue to inspire others as well. I only wish I could have found about Kandy's Sewing School earlier!
