ECCENTRIC CHARISMA: JULIANNE MOORE INTERPRETS THE SPIRIT AND VALUES OF BULGARI

F

ebruary 2010 is the release date for Bulgari’s “Eccentric Charisma” campaign, conceived as an expression of the spirit and values of the brand and an interpretation of a lifestyle that the maison has created over the years through creativity and innovation. The star of the campaign is Julianne Moore, an actress with 48 films and 4 Oscar nominations to her credit, chosen to represent the style and personality of the Bulgari woman. A choice inspired by her timeless charisma, which transcends the trends and myths of the moment to earn her a place in the history not only of cinema, but of feminine elegance. A woman of inescapable magnetism, confident and daring, never conventional, yet at the same time a connoisseur of refined beauty. Her world is the sum of her experiences, her encounters, her travels, and her instinctive ability to find beauty where others can not. Julianne Moore’s extraordinary combination of Pre-Raphaelite

Opulent and richly colored as an exotic boudoir, furnished with sumptuous pillows, plush brocades, purple satin and peacock feathers, this is the frame that transforms Ms. Moore’s unique beauty into a contemporary odalisque – mysterious, luminous and sophisticated. The utterly unexpected presence of exotic animals underscore her irresistible eccentricity and a temperament that defies all preconceptions. The featured item in the “Eccentric Charisma” campaign is the Chandra bag, seen here in the nuances of chestnut and Prussian blue. Already an icon of contemporary luxury and style, chosen by numerous divas of the international jet set, its name means ‘moon’ in Sanskrit. And just like that nocturnal orb, its sinuously rounded forms evoke a radiant and magnetic femininity. Stylist Julia von Boehm selected a splendid timepiece and some of Bulgari’s most iconic jewels for Ms. Moore’s photo shoot, including a spectacular pair of Haute Joaillerie earrings mounted with two large teardrop emeralds of the rarest green in a setting of baguette-cut diamonds. The actress also wears jewels from the new Serpenti collection, among which is a bracelet in yellow gold with white mother-of-pearl inserts alternated with brilliant-

Sophisticated shapes and hightech materials Whether viewed from the front, the side, or through the sapphire crystal back, all angles provide the same clear-cut impression of dynamic, aggressive, taut and complex shapes that are undeniably reminiscent of gleaming automobile bodywork. Among the three interpretations available, the first is distinguished by a forged carbon case matching a bezel with a forged carbon upper part and a lower ring in shimmering black ceramics. Offering a perfect example of the sophisticated design of this collection, the bezels are composed of two openworked and nested rings. The screws extend slightly beyond the bezel surface and are thus set off to their best advantage. This first version radiates an extremely sporty and predominantly black appearance enhanced by the red dial – a central eloxed aluminium plate adorned with the “Méga Tapisserie” motif characteristic of the Royal Oak Offshore line. The pattern has however been specially revisited for this limited edition by means of a negativeprinted design that creates a depth effect and evokes the cooling scoops on a car. Another red accent appears on the crown adorned with an eloxed aluminium cartridge. The crown deserves a closer look due to its sophisticated edging and its

This fascinating list of technical and aesthetic characteristics would hardly be complete without mentioning the four scoops at 1.30, 4.30, 7.30 and 10.30, echoing the studs which pick up the same theme; and the three counters with a raised rim that is blackened inside and polished on top. Thus endowed with a wealth of fine details, these three models brilliantly showcase Audemars Piguet’s technical expertise. The shapes are enriched by a profusion of design features inspired by the world of automobiles. They all share the common denominator of protruding elements – cooling scoops, aerodynamic effects and deflectors – that provide a combination of character and complexity. The result is a major technical accomplishment with an aggressive, ultra-sporty design.

Beneath the hood openworked design providing glimpses of red – a colour that also appears on the side of the alcantara strap. The floating flange stands out because of its bronze colour reminiscent of the magnesium alloy wheel rims on a racing car. The second interpretation has a case in pink gold, a noble material that makes a striking contrast with the forged carbon and black ceramic bezel, as well as with the left side of the case middle and its forged carbon element

designed like a ventilation duct. It also contrasts with the carbon pushpiece guards, which further exemplify the meticulous detailing on this model. Instead of being straightforward rectangles, the latter feature clean-cut high-tech edges and are applied to the case by four visible screws as well as hollowed on the side so as to house the pushpieces which are themselves composed of two parts: a black polished ceramic base and a pink gold contact surface. The third and final version also has a forged carbon and black ceramic

While racing cars are naturally powered by high-performance engines, the movement equipping the Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix chronographs is equally impressive. The selfwinding Calibre 3126 is entirely designed, developed and made by the Manufacture Audemars Piguet, and the 3840 chronograph mechanism with which it is fitted ensures accurate timing. The constantly enhanced Calibre 3126/3840 is distinguished by its admirable reliability. Its crossthrough balance-bridge guarantees improved shock-resistance, while the variable-inertia balance

It is also extremely userfriendly, particularly thanks to the fast-adjustment instant-jump date display and the 60-hour power reserve. Accurate time-setting is facilitated by the fact that pulling out the crown instantly activates the stop seconds lever which – as its name implies – brings the seconds hand to an immediate halt. and finishing. The bridges, which are arranged in an elegant and harmonious manner, are meticulously chamfered and polished so as to display only clean-cut, shining edges. The jewel sinks are diamond-polished and the wheels feature chamfered arms and diamond-polished sinks. Even the screw slots and rims are chamfered. The handcrafted decorative touches include circular-grained on either side of the mainplate and bridges adorned with Côtes de Genève. The singlepiece oscillating weight in 22-carat gold has been specifically designed and developed for this prestigious limited edition. Partially blackened

and hollowed, it reflects the recurrent theme of scoops and contrasting relief effects. The AP monogram – naturally in red – is thus framed by two scoops carved out of the metal block. The caseback comes in titanium, pink gold or 950 platinum according to the version and matches the overall resolutely modern and industrial aesthetic. It alternates between grained, satin-brushed and polished finishes and shows off its eight hollowed screws. A circular zone dedicated to a partially blackened text zone proudly displays the inscription “Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix Limited Edition”, while the central sapphire

Clever combinations of forged carbon Forged carbon was deliberately chosen for this collection. This ultra-light and resistant material is exclusively developed by Audemars Piguet, from the manufacturing method through to the related tools. The sophisticated shapes of the Royal Oak Offshore are achieved thanks to an appropriate mould. A set of threaded carbon filaments is placed inside this mould. This wire measuring just one millimetre in diameter is itself composed of several thousand 7-micron carbon fibres held together by a resin wire. The case middle of the Royal Oak Offshore Grand Prix calls for a set of filaments totalling 12.5 grams. Placed end to end, these filaments are equivalent to 22.2 metres of carbon wire and 99.7 km of carbon fibres! The mould is then compressed at high temperature at pressures of over 300 kilos per square centimetre. This process results in a material composed of 76% carbon and only 24% polyamide. Audemars Piguet displays the full force of its expertise in the machining process. The inside of the case and the correction of the various drilled holes can thus be meticulously finished. The result is a shimmering effect and a silky feel, clear-cut edges and a sturdy yet ultra-light case-middle: in its forged carbon version, the Royal Oak Ofshore Grand Prix weighs a mere 120 grams! Ceramics, blackened or beadblasted titanium, eloxed

aluminium, 950 platinum and pink gold all contribute to this stunning combination of sophisticated materials. www.audemarspiguet.com

Atmos Birth Date The start of a wonderful collection.

T

he daringly innovative Atmos Birth Date embodies an idea destined for a fine future, since the Atmos clock, an eternally youthful young lady born 80 years ago in the JaegerLeCoultre workshops, takes on a tender, mischievous appearance while losing nothing of its seductive appeal. While the horological icon with the almost perpetual mechanism continues to count off the hours and minutes of the world’s most eminent figures, it now turns into a wonderful gift when the time comes to celebrate a happy event and, according to a wellestablished tradition, comes in pastel pink or blue versions. For the first time within this rich collection, its base is adorned with the name of the newborn child that it will faithfully accompany through all stages of his or her life, because the Atmos movement continues to represent a

challenge to mechanical laws and to the ephemeral nature of human accomplishments.

Youthful modernity With its entirely transparent glass cabinet, the Atmos Birth Date keeps silent and benevolent watch over the destiny of the child for whom it faithfully marks off the hours, days and years. In addition to the first name, family name and date of birth engraved on the base, it is also possible to have the exact day of the birth appear on the month disc. The official gift presented by the Swiss Federal government to its illustrious guests thus reprises and extends its role as a symbol destined to witness life’s most

meaningful moments. While a certain undeniable gravitas befits this mechanism that makes light of the passing of time as if by magic, the designers of the Manufacture have successfully endowed the Atmos Birth Date with a distinctly modern touch, imbuing their creation with a refreshingly innocent air. Delicately inlaid with pink or blue mother-of-pearl, the twelve segments of the hour circle feature the infinitely repeated name Atmos in a motif interrupted only by the succession of Roman numerals.

features a disc of which the upper part appears at 6 o’clock, above the Atmos and Jaeger-LeCoultre inscriptions. The Atmos Birth Date also exists in two jewellery variations, set with ten diamonds on the moon disc and nine diamonds on the dial, complete with a motherof-pearl inlaid hour circle and base. The latter exceptional creations, which will be issued in two limited series of just eight – eight blue and eight pink – are a fabulous illustration of the famous proverb expressed by the French poet and playwright Corneille, who wrote that value/ valour does not wait upon the passing of years.

Meanwhile, the moonphase display

In the avant-garde for the past 80 years The origins of the Atmos clock date back to 1928, when it was invented by the Neuchâtel-born engineer Jean-Léon Reutter, who had been fascinated since his earliest youth by the myth of perpetual motion. His incredible mechanism, based on a system that is still in the avantgarde today, was subsequently taken up by Jacques-David LeCoultre. He called upon the full resources of his watch Manufacture

48 I PREMIUM - Spring 2010

to develop the project and bring it to the series-production stage. A splendid representative of the luxury clock segment, the Atmos has lent its unfailingly accurate and serene presence to the reflective moments of such eminent figures as Sir Winston Churchill, J.F. Kennedy, General de Gaulle and HM King Juan Carlos 1st. 80 years after its invention, the operating principle of the Atmos remains unique in the world. The clock draws the energy required to operate from tiny variations in temperature resulting

in the contraction or expansion of a gas contained within an airtight bellows that dilates and retracts in turn. The incessant repetition of this phenomenon can be compared with breathing, and the to-andfro motion winds a barrel that drives a mechanism requiring an exceptionally small amount of energy – since a one-degree variation is enough to keep it running for 48 hours. While a certain undeniable gravitas befits this mechanism that

than a standard mechanical wristwatch. Or, to give another eloquent example, it would take no less than 60 million Atmos clocks to light up a single 15-watt bulb.

Nonetheless, this prodigiously accurate mechanism could not possibly beat to the cadence of our hectic modern lives, and the annular balance of the clock, which is perfectly visible through the glass cabinet, performs just two majestic vibrations per minute.

This sparing attitude makes the Atmos clock the least energyconsuming mechanism ever invented. The privilege of slowness also lies in the almost total absence of wear and thus aging of this mechanism that appears to literally live on air and which, 80 years after its birth, is still the closest any object has ever come to perpetual motion.

Thus, by virtue of a modus operandi governed by the supreme principle of economy, an Atmos consumes 250 times less energy

facing the stark limits of available energy resources, the fabulous operating principle of the Atmos certainly shows the path to follow for the little girls and boys who will become tomorrow’s engineers, inventors and discoverers. And doubtless many of them will acknowledge, a few decades from now, that the Atmos Birth Date has faithfully served them as an inexhaustible source of wonderment and inspiration. www.Jaeger-LeCoultre.com

Nothing gets in the way of the dial’s legibility at night either; the hour numerals, and the blued hour, minute, and second hands are inlaid with the luminescent material SuperLumiNova. The Double G logo guarantees a counterbalance on the tip of the second hand. In order to do justice to the dynamic character of the timepiece, designers at Glashütte Original decided to create a leap year display using a hand at 12 o’clock: when it points to the red L, it is currently a leap year. In addition to a perfectly legible dial, rate precision is vital in a pilot’s watch. Inside the Senator Navigator Perpetual Calendar, automatic manufacture Caliber 100-07 guarantees this precision.

The OMEGA Seamaster Ploprof 1200M

I

n 1970 OMEGA launched a watch which had been created to withstand the crushing pressures endured by divers working deep below the ocean’s surface. It was the Seamaster 600, the so-called “Ploprof” (the first letters of plongeurs professionnels – the French words meaning “professional divers”) and it was one of the most rugged, robust and seaworthy divers’ wristwatches ever manufactured.

The unmistakable Co-Axial Ploprof Now OMEGA is introducing an updated version of the classic and instantly recognizable wristwatch. Equipped with a Co-Axial calibre 8500, the new Ploprof 1200M is, as its name suggests, water resistant to an astounding 1200 metres (4000 feet) and it artfully combines its ancestor’s legendary features

54 I PREMIUM - Spring 2010

with OMEGA’s state-of-the-industry Co-Axial technology. The Ploprof’s case cannot be mistaken for that of any other watch: the screwed-in crown is located at 9 o’clock under a protective buffer. Its unique positioning allows freer wrist movement and prevents any inadvertent manipulation.

Designed for divers The time and date adjustments are made by unscrewing the crown to release the protective buffer and then pulling the crown to the appropriate position. The Co-Axial calibre 8500 makes it possible to adjust the hour hand separately to accommodate different time zones or for the changes to daylight savings and back to standard time. At the 2 o’clock position is the

Ploprof’s characteristic bezelrelease security pusher with an orange anodised aluminium ring. Pressing the pusher allows the bezel to be rotated in either direction and then locked firmly in position, ensuring that it cannot be accidentally shifted during a dive. The Ploprof has an automatic helium escape valve located on the side of the case at the 4 o’clock position. This feature allows helium atoms to escape during decompression, and is particularly useful for professional divers operating from diving bells.

Two-piece oriented caseback The case body is made of brushed stainless steel and has polished bevels. The centre piece of the two-piece oriented caseback features a background of straight,

The centre piece is sealed in place with an outer screw-in ring with black-chromed engraving of “1200m/4000ft”, “Ploprof”, and “OMEGA 8500 CoAxial Escapement.” The Seamaster Ploprof 1200M has a polished, lacquered black dial with an applied polished OMEGA name and logo. The word “Professional” has been transferred in white. The polished indexes are coated with white Super-LumiNova, as are the varnished hour and seconds hands. The oversized minute hand, which plays such an important role for divers, is crafted from orange aluminium and is coated with white Super-LumiNova. The Ploprof 1200M has a date window at the 4:30 position.

On your wrist; on your wetsuit The Ploprof 1200M is available either with a brushed mesh “Sharkproof” bracelet or on a rubber strap in a choice of black or orange. The bracelet, with its double extension system, is fitted with OMEGA’s new diving safety clasp whose pinned links allow precise adjustments to 18 positions. It also features an extra divers’ extension to 26 mm so that the watch can be worn comfortably over a diving suit. The watch is delivered in a special black zippered presentation case made of neoprene – the material used in divers’ wetsuits.

Respecting the past, defining the future The OMEGA Co-Axial Ploprof 1200M bears a strong resemblance to its famous ancestor and it carries on the traditions of robust reliability and water resistance which have always defined OMEGA’s divers’ watches. But there are also some remarkable improvements: for example, the watch is driven by the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8500 with a free sprung balance. This movement, launched in 2007, was created from inception by OMEGA and is one of the key elements in the revolution in mechanical watchmaking which has been taking place at the company since 1999. With the launch of the Seamaster Ploprof 1200M, OMEGA has reintroduced a mythical diving watch, combining the look which made it a legend with cutting-edge watchmaking features.

58 I PREMIUM - Spring 2010

Powering the Ploprof The OMEGA CoAxial calibre 8500 In 1890 OMEGA produced the first-ever industrialized movement. 117 years later, the company took a step which was every bit as dramatic when it launched its revolutionary Co-Axial calibre 8500, the movement at the heart of the new Ploprof. The calibre, featuring the OMEGA Co-Axial Escapement, heralded OMEGA as a leading presence in the elite field of mechanical watchmaking. Its 202 components were created in-house, from inception, using third millennium technology to ensure optimum performance. Introduced on an industrial scale by OMEGA in 1999, the Co-Axial Escapement had been invented by master watchmaker Dr.

George Daniels. It is the watch’s escapement which provides the regular transmission of energy to the mechanism. Together with the free sprung balance, the Co-Axial Escapement offers optimal stability to the watch’s running rate over long periods and enhances the performance of the timepiece. In addition, due to the reduced sliding friction, the need for oil in this tiny component is nearly eliminated. The automatic mechanism is driven by a highly efficient bidirectional rotor. The energy is then transmitted through two barrels providing the watch with an impressive power reserve of 60 hours. Adjusting the Ploprof when traveling through time-zones is simple as the hour hand can be moved separately from the minutes and seconds hands. The new Ploprofs, with their Co-Axial 8500 calibres, are COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) certified chronometers. www.omegawatches.com

Since its introduction in 1999, the Tissot Touch range has continually strengthened its technological leadership

by bringing this tactile innovation to a wide range of contemporary designs, created with dynamic and stylish materials. Tissot takes its tactile technology to new limits in 2009 with the introduction of the Tissot SEA-Touch, a high performance watch for divers with water resistance to 200 metres.

PREMIUM I WATCHES

In touch with leading technology A light touch of the innovative tactile crystal on any of the Tissot Touch timepieces - T-Touch, T-Touch Expert, Touch Navigator, Touch Silen-T, SEA-Touch - enables access to a variety of useful functions, geared to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of wearers.

Keeping track of lifestyles (since 1999)

Good vibrations (since 2003) The Touch Silen-T uses the Tissot tactile technology to offer the first watch ever to provide timekeeping via silent vibration. Whether the wearer wants to discretely check the time in a meeting, or is visually impaired, this model represents a welcome breakthrough. Simply by touching the crown and then running a finger clockwise around the crystal, the wearer can “feel” the time through the constant vibration on the hour, accompanied by intermittent vibrations for the minutes corresponding to one of the twelve raised indices on the bezel. This unique watch also comes with a silent vibrating alarm which, like the time setting itself, can be activated and checked without eye contact with the watch face. With a choice of black, white and silver dial and a stainless-steel bracelet or black strap in high-tech, water resistant leather, the Touch Silen-T promises good vibrations all round.

Tissot ensures that technology meets style in its T-Touch range with innovative, top quality materials for cases, dials and straps. Classical stainless steel joins titanium and even 18k gold or platinum, in a wide selection of case styles. In addition to the sporty metal and black rubber bracelets are headturning variations in orange and white rubber. Elegantly completing the picture are black carbon or white motherof-pearl dials, proving that Tissot is always in touch with the very latest trends. Features such as Altimeter (in feet and metres), Chronograph (split and cumulative time), Compass, Alarm, Thermometer (in Celsius and Fahrenheit) and Barometer are always at the wearers’ fingertips, whether they are trekking on the Matterhorn or jogging downtown. As soon as a function is selected by touch, the superposed hands move to indicate that function and this information simultaneously appears on the digital display.

itoni presents a new model in its prestigious Master Series collection. Since its creation, this collection has embodied horological precision and a passion for fine workmanship, expressed in particular through the systematic COSC chronometer certification of its movements. To guarantee excellent precision, Titoni has brought as much of the manufacturing process as possible at its headquarters – from movement assembly through to shipping of the finished watches. For the very first time, this model features a transparent sapphire crystal case back, which reveals its mechanical self-winding movement. The opening allows you to view the oscillating weight graced with circular ’Côtes de Genève’, the Pantheon collection motif, as well as the name of the collection, Master Series, and the Titoni brand name – all accurately engraved and gilded. The COSC certification

There is a collection nameplate on the anthracite or silvered dial of this masterpiece and the chronometer certification is located at 6 o’clock. The Titoni five-petal flower brand emblem appears at 12 o’clock, along with the inscription ’Titoni Automatic’. The date is displayed at 3 o’clock and the partially hollowed hands are coated with a luminescent material. The case measures 40 mm in diameter and is marked on the side by a numberplate giving the movement certification number. The circumference is engraved with several technical indications on the case back – a sign reflecting the most exacting Swiss quality standards for which the family business Titoni is wellknown since generations.

Diamond Wedding Jewelry

C

hoosing the right wedding jewelry is without a doubt an imperatively important thing to accomplish before you can confidently stride down the aisle on you big day! Well, having spent days choosing and picking the perfect bridal gown and shoes, you have to also ensure that the wedding jewelry that you would adorn on your wedding day match your outfit well. The jewelry you will wear on your wedding day is a very personal choice. Some brides will want to spend a lot of time picking out the most gorgeous pieces while for others it is more about using cherished heirlooms that belonged to their Grandma. Jewelry is essentially the icing on the cake. It helps you look incredible by putting just the right finishing touches on your wedding ensemble. So, the question is, what should you wear to match your style? For some ladies, there seems to be no limit to the amount of extraordinary pieces they can wear. Most women love diamond wedding jewelry, and, want to be dripping with them for their wedding (or, at least, look like they are). Other ladies really look most stunning with a few key pieces added to their ensemble‌more of an understated elegance. At the end of the day, you will want to have been comfortable and looked

106 I PREMIUM - Spring 2010

your best, so, choose what you like. One way to do this is to try on the jewelry you plan to wear, along with your dress, and have photos taken of yourself. Look at them and see which you like best. Be sure to choose pieces that enhance, not take away from, your beauty on your special day. No matter what you choose to wear, be sure you try it on in advance, photograph yourself, and see which ensemble you love best, after all, the perfect wedding day comes along once in a lifetime.

What Stones Should Be In Your Wedding Jewelry? Diamonds are a very popular option. However, there are many precious gemstones that are just as beautiful. Don’t be afraid to use something new or unique, if you love how it looks on you.

Match Elements That Are Already In Your Dress If your dress has Swarovski crystals along the neckline,

diamond jewelry will probably add to your look. If your gown features pearls on it or small beading, pearl and diamond wedding jewelry could look amazing with the dress.

Necklaces, Pendants, Bracelets and More Depending on the neckline of the dress, many brides will wear at least a necklace, pendant, earrings and their engagement ring. If the neckline of the dress is highly decorated already, consider large diamond earrings and forego the necklace, or, you will find the neckline and necklace competing with each other and you can include a nice tennis bracelet.

Kayali Jewelry offers a great selection of bridal jewelry sets. These sets of jewelry include a ring, necklace, earrings, and a bracelet that would make you more radiant than ever before for the special occasion. If your wedding is indeed just around the corner, and you are on the lookout for the perfect jewelry that could complement your gown perfectly, then come over to our shops and discover the wide range of bridal jewelry that we have for you there! Glashütte Original simultaneously successful in two watch competitions

O

n Thursday 18th March 2010, numerous representatives from the watchmaking industry gathered in the Hotel Plaza in Basel to participate in the announcement of the winners of the “Watch of the Year 2010”.

Senator Chronometer

For the 17th time in succession now, the specialist magazine “Armbanduhren”, together with the “Welt am Sonntag”, called upon its readers to vote for their favorite timepieces. A total of 159 timepieces were nominated in the category of men’s watches. The votes could be submitted either by postcard or online. Shortly before the announcement of the winner, the excitement in the room rose to fever pitch. When Peter Braun, chief editor of Armbanduhren, declared that the Senator Chronometer had been chosen as “Watch of the Year 2010”, thunderous applause swept through the room. Obviously moved and with great pride, Günter Wiegand, Managing Director of Glashütte Original, accepted the coveted award on behalf of all the employees of the Saxon watch manufacturer. Among the first to congratulate were Franz-Christoph Heel, publisher of Armbanduhren and Joachim Bessing, editor of the style section of “Welt am Sonntag”. A total of 11,147 readers took part in the vote. Of these, 637 voted for the Senator Chronometer as winner. The Senator Chronometer is the first officially certified chronometer from Glashütte Original and was presented for the first time

in 2009. The clear and elegant exterior conceals a specially designed, high-precision, perfect manual winding caliber 58-01. Using a novel secondzero-stop-mechanism, it becomes much easier for the wearer to set the exact time. magazine “Focus” is presented in a total of five different categories. Glashütte Original was very happy with its 1st place in the category of up to 5,000 EUR.

This means that the correct relationship of the displayed seconds and minutes is always retained. Principally, however, the timepiece won favour among the voting public due to its elegant aesthetics. Interview with Titoni CEO Daniel M. Schluep Daniel M. Schluep, CEO of Titoni at the headquarters in Grenchen, Switzerland.

S

ince it was founded in 1919, Titoni has enjoyed an international market presence. The watches made by this independent, family-run company are a byword for Swiss quality and precision. To coincide with its 90th anniversary, the tradition-steeped brand is to embark on a new strategy, including a redesigned brand identity. CEO Daniel M. Schluep explains the background to the move. Mr. Schluep, you’ve been head of Titoni for 28 years now. For an “old hand” such as you, does an anniversary year still represent something special?

129 I PREMIUM - Spring 2010

PREMIUM I NEWS

The historic in-house production at the Swiss headquarters in Grenchen.

Absolutely, the watch industry fascinates me. It is a market that is constantly changing, constantly presenting you with new challenges. The competition is fierce. To me, “old hand” sounds like someone who might be tired of the business and that’s dangerous. I do not feel tired in any way. I’m proud of this “90th”. You’re heading up the company in its third generation. What has changed over the years? Given our history, “traditions” represent a firm component of our identity. My grandfather set himself the goal of ensuring that his timepieces would be worn far beyond the borders of Switzerland. We have remained true to that goal. Changes have occurred, however, in the way in which we now reach our customers – worldwide. In recent years, we have taken

130 I PREMIUM - Spring 2010

a close look at our business and further developed our brand.

partners constitute a fundamental element in our success.

Titoni is one of the few independent watch brands. What advantages does that have when it comes to developing the brand? As a family company, we offer unique products of the highest quality, not mass-market items, which due to our size we would not be in a position to produce anyway. We decide what to do and what not to do. When it comes to market development, that’s an enormous advantage: The decision-making paths are short and we can always take a deep breath. We can implement decisions over the long term and don’t need to be constantly coming up with new plans due to short-term, quarterly figure considerations. In addition, long-term relationships with our

Other Swiss watch brands invest a lot in their brand communication. How do you approach that at Titoni? There’s no denying that major corporations tend to compensate for a certain lack of quality with high expenditure on marketing. That’s not the way we go about things. We use our family-oriented corporate culture and the quality of our products as authentic factors that contribute to the success of our brand. That gives us credibility. That is exactly what we offer our customers, worldwide, and what we seek to share with them. What are you hoping for from the redesigned Titoni brand? A clear profile, in all our target markets. On the one hand, that

PREMIUM I NEWS concerns the Chinese market in which we have long enjoyed a successful position. On the other, the remaining international markets and Switzerland. In addition, it is aimed at our partners and employees. All of them need to know and understand what values we stand for and what goals we are pursuing. Communicating the brand internally plays a key role in leveraging the brand. In doing this, it is also a major advantage that we are an independent family-run company. The communication of our values – naturally, by me as well – thus becomes much more direct and understandable.

In your opinion, what distinguishes the new image of Titoni? The current slogan of “Shaping moments of life” encapsulates it. It reflects the essence of the brand. We are proud of the family tradition and the quality of our products. That doesn’t mean that we plan to shout that from the rooftops at every opportunity. It also involves a certain naturalness and implicitness. Titoni watches are worn by people who live life in a self-assured way, know where they come from and where they are going, are determined, but natural. People who know how to enjoy those special moments. We emphasise this attitude to life as an experience at all points of contact.

That’s what we’ll be focussing on this year. From the training of sales personnel at POS, in our dealings with partners, to traditional print advertisements and posters. What are your goals for Titoni over the next ten years? Essentially we will be looking to ensure the continued existence and independence of our company. To do that, we want to consolidate and expand our presence in the marketplace. Naturally, the industry will present us with major challenges - on the one hand, the trend to concentration, on the other, the demand placed on the “Swissmade” label.

In-house assembly at the Swiss headquarters ensures the highest Swiss quality for every Titoni product.
